KIWI RACER TAYNE LEMON WORLD NUMBER 2 IN AM OPEN.
KIWI SUCCESS AT JETSKI WORLDS Tayne Lemon, 18, from Auckland’s Hibiscus Coast, attended his first World Jet Ski Finals in Lake Havasu, Arizona when he was 15. He came home with a second place in the Junior Lites division, great memories and many new international friends were made. He returned this year in October to race the ‘big boys’ and it was a trip to remember. For 34 Years the Jetski World Finals have been held in Lake Havasu City, a few hours drive from Las Vegas where the world’s best racers converge for two weeks of hard racing. Tayne has been freeriding since he was 11 and started racing at 13 having been introduced to the sport by friends. At the Worlds this year he rode in 5 Classes, to gain as much experience as he could, and his ultimate goal was to qualify for the Pro Open. Two skis were sent to the world finals, a Lites ( 2 stroke 701cc Yamaha Superjet) with a top 122 PACIFIC PWC 2016
speed of 52mph and a custom built open ski based on a Yamaha Superjet with a purpose built motor based on the Yamaha GP 1200 with a top speed of 68 mph. This year was especially hard with dramatic changes in temperature day to day, which caused a few tuning issues and a new hull and motor package to deal with. While qualifying for the top positions for the finals of the Lites classes he had a track infringement and a stalled motor on the start line that saw him finish outside the top placings With the stock classes behind him it was time to take on the faster open classes. Tayne was top qualifier in Amateur Open, a slow start in the final Moto 1 saw him finish fourth, but a stalled start saw him leave the line last in final Moto 2. However, given his talent and belief in himself he rode back to second place, finishing only a few meters behind first place.
Giving him a world number two ranking in AM open. He then went on to qualify for both Pro Open and Pro GP, both these classes are stacked with the world’s top pros riding sponsored skis, most of which are reaching speeds of 75 mph. A blown race motor saw him race these classes with his training motor that was well down on horsepower but finished 14th nd 15th respectively. Taynes dad Terry builds, tunes and race preps all his skis in the garage. Tayne also rides flat water freestyle and freerides, and was the youngest person to backflip a pole ski in Australasia back in 2012 at Rip n Ride 5 in Sydney (Check out the video on Youtube). Planning has already started to head back for next year with his sights set on a number 1 finish. www.taynelemon.com

T H E P W C M AY H AV E CHANGED BUT THE ISLAND IS STILL THERE AND AWAITING FOR YOU TO EXPERIENCE. Waiheke is one of the most easily accessible islands in the Hauraki Gulf, close to Auckland and is a favourite spot amongst fishermen, families and holiday makers. We thought it would be a novel idea to do a circumnavigation of Waiheke, albeit a little differently on a couple of four-stroke personal watercraft. The weather in mid-February was perfect and the water warm, so what better way to explore the island.
Our rides were the Yamaha FX160 Cruiser and Sea-Doo’s GTX 4-TEC. The FX160 Cruiser was powered by a four-stroke normally-aspirated Yamaha High Output MR-1 engine and the GTX 4-TEC by the supercharged Rotax 4-TEC engine , producing 215hp. Of the Hauraki Gulf islands, it is the second-largest (after Great Barrier Island), the most populated and the most accessible by regular ferry
and air services. Waiheke is the third most populated island in New Zealand, after the North and South Islands and is a picturesque blend of farmland, forest, beaches, vineyards and olive groves. There is a great range of activities on Waiheke: options include mountain biking, sea kayaking or a relaxed vineyard tour. The delectable cuisine on offer is complemented by a range of awardwinning wines produced at the

island’s many wineries. Significant industries on the island include winemaking, olive production, tourism, arts and crafts. The island is 19.3km long from east to west and varies in width from 640m to 9.65km, with an area of 92km². The coastline is 133.5km long, including 40km of beaches. The port of Matiatia at the western end of the island is 17.7km from Auckland and the eastern end is 21.4km from Coromandel. It is very hilly, with few flat areas. 126 PACIFIC PWC 2016

There is a permanent population of around 8,000 residents. Much of the population lives close to the western end of the Island, at or close to an east-west isthmus between Huruhi Bay and Oneroa Bay which, at its narrowest, is only 600 metres wide. Here are the settlements of Oneroa and Blackpool; immediately to the east of these are Palm Beach, Surfdale, and Ostend. of the eastern half of the island is privately owned farmland. Waiheke Island is a popular holiday spot. During the period around Christmas, the population increases significantly, rents go up dramatically, almost all homes and batches are occupied and a festive atmosphere exists. We launched the PWCs at Half Moon Bay on Auckland’s Tamaki River and arranged to meet our support/camera boat, a Rayglass Protector, at Browns Island.

After an initial high speed blast along the southern edge of Waiheke we journeyed along the eastern side of the island and explored a few of the bays. After a quick photo session we took a look at Gannet rock, about a mile offshore at the Northern tip of Waiheke at Thumb Point. This is known for its good snapper fishing and there is deep water close in on its south side, but watch for foul ground along its north-eastern corner. We then stopped in at Garden Cove, which is

located along the northern side of Waiheke. This tiny cove is ideal for trailer boats. Access to Garden Cove is through a small gap, between a large rock and the shore. There are actually two entrances, the small gap on the right hand side is the best one to use, as it is the deeper of the two; the wider entrance on the left hand side is plagued by rocks and has claimed its share of propellers, stern legs and shafts. Oneroa offers an array of cafes, restaurants,

and shops. We stopped in here, anchored the Rayglass, tied up the PWCs and went for lunch at one of the restaurants above Hekerua Bay. Mawhiti Pana Bay, Palm Beach and Hekerua Bay are well worth a visit, but check your charts for a few rocks around the area. Cirtcumnavigating Waiheke Island would be a cool trip this summer and I might just have to do it again.

2016 PWC MODEL UPDATE
YAMAHA VX CRUISER HO
YAMAHA ALL NEW VX MODELS Yamaha Motor New Zealand’s, 2016 line of WaveRunner personal watercraft is highlighted by the introduction of the all-new Yamaha VX Limited. Also new for 2016 is the powerful, lightweight, three-cylinder Yamaha TR-1 High Output marine engine that powers all 2016 VX models (with the exception of the VXR). For the entry to mid-level customer, the new TR-1 engine offers access to the very latest engine technology from Yamaha. For 2016, the best-selling PWC series of all time is more refined with the introduction of the VX Limited. The VX Limited is the Newest VX model offered to date featuring the new Yamaha TR-1 HO engine along with special colour 132 PACIFIC PWC 2016
and graphics, four pull-up cleats, a ski tow eye, enhanced 3D Yamaha logo. The VXR is a different animal all together powered by the 1.8L normally-aspirated Yamaha marine engine that has carried the Yamaha VXR to four consecutive national racing titles. The Yamaha TR-1 HO marine engine is 13% more powerful than the Yamaha MR-1 engine that it is replacing while being 40% smaller in size and 20% lighter in weight. Yamaha achieves this by eliminating a reduction gear, integrating the oil tank, and using fewer and smaller parts. The result is quicker acceleration, higher top end speeds, with better fuel economy and more fun for the rider.
On the handlebars, the VX Limited and VX Deluxe include Yamaha’s premium Cruise Assist for setting and holding a consistent speed, No Wake Mode to set the engine’s RPMs at a perfect no wake speed; and RiDE, Yamaha’s dual handlebar throttle controls that deliver the control moving forward or in reverse. Additionally, Yamaha’s RiDE is featured on all FX Models which are returning in 2016 with new colours and graphics. Yamaha’s FZ Series, also has an all new look featuring new colour schemes and a bold metallic red hull. The Yamaha SuperJet, the only stand up watercraft on the market, is available in two colour variations in 2016.

2016 PWC MODEL UPDATE
KAWASAKI 310R
KAWASAKI STILL KING OF HORSEPOWER The Ultra’s deep-V hull design splits chop and surf like a battleship, strong and sturdy. Propelled by a true 310-horsepower erupting from a Eaton TVS twin-screw roots-style supercharger pressing an impressive 16.8 psi of boost down the electronically-controlled 60mm throat of a 1,498cc 4-cylinder 4-stroke. The Ultra manages to produce more horsepower with less bore width and boost than the new 1,630cc ACE 300 with its18psi of boost. Out back, the big Kawasaki spins a SkatTrak stainless steel three-blade, oval-edged impeller inside of an industry-leading axialflow, single stage 160mm jet pump. Two years ago marked when Kawasaki made significant improvements to its then-current 300X model, primarily to the engine’s internal temperature management via expanded cooling circuits (along with a secondary inducted water circuit for the high volume intercooler), a new single semi-dry sump system and double under piston oil jets. Combined with Kawasaki’s new Digital Fuel 134 PACIFIC PWC 2016
Injection (DFI) system – with larger injectors plumbed into a two-piece composite longrunner intake manifold, not only increased the engine’s longevity and increased efficiency, but opened up an extra 10 horsepower. Kawasaki also increased the DOHC (dual over-head camshaft) 4-cylinder’s oil capacity to an impressive 5.5 litres. Beneath the hood, storage capacity is equally impressive with 206 litres of storage via a drop-in bin and furnished bow. Although there’s no locking or screw-top lids, Kawasaki’s hood and glove box door have thick rubber weather stripping ensuring a near-watertight seal. And for all Ultra models (except the 310R moto handlebars), 5-place adjustable tilt steering is standard along with a full power (green) operating key and a yellow SLO (Smart Learning Operation) key that limits acceleration and top speed. The Ultra 310LX continues with the industry’s only on board factory sound system. The 310LX features a shaped and scalloped, two-tone, three-passenger seat saddle. and
its first colour change to ebony and metallic carbon gray. The 2016 310R is almost completely untouched save for new graphics. The 310X is unchanged, save for the versatile 310X’s change to an Ebony and Metallic Stardust White livery. Kawasaki’s two most fuel-efficient and priceefficient vehicles, the naturally-aspirated Ultra LX and STX-15F share the same power plant, the previous edition 1.5-liter 4-stroke, four-cylinder and retain the traditional cableoperated throttle and trigger. You won’t find cruise control, electronic trim or Eco mode on either of these models like you do on all 310-powered Ultras listed above. All Ultra JetSki models (310LX, 310X Special Edition (SE), 310X, 310R and LX) as well as the perennial STX-15F remain unmodified for the 2016 model year, with only new aforementioned rich metallic colours and eyegrabbing decals (most in the iconic “Kawasaki Green”) being the sole additions.

2016 PWC MODEL UPDATE
BRP OFFER MORE FEATURES BRP charges into 2016 building on the successful launch of the Sea-Doo SPARK as the industry’s most accessible watercraft and introduces new technologies and designs that take riding to the next level. All 2016 models will now have the new second-generation iBR (intelligent Brake & Reverse) system and new, trend leading coloration including three new colours for the 2016 Sea-Doo SPARK. BRP introduces the new 300-hp Rotax 1630 ACE engine, adds the Ergolock seat to all RXT and GTX models and many models receiving a redesign of the storage area providing up to three times the overall storage volume. 2016 Sea-Doo PWC Range Sea-Doo has added an all-new 300hp engine, the most powerful it has ever built, to its 136 PACIFIC PWC 2016
top-end performance models for 2016. The Rotax 1630 ACE (Advanced Combustion Efficiency) engine will be available on the XP, XT and GTX Limited 300 models. These new top-of-the-range models will be offered in addition to the 260 models, powered by the Rotax 1530 engine it supersedes. While it will be 9%bigger and 15% more powerful it will produce the same speed-limited top speed of 62knots (115km/h) as its predecessor. It has also been fitted with an all-new supercharger that produces 30 per cent more intake boost. To go with the additional power Sea-Doo has also fitted its 2016 range with secondgeneration iBR braking system. There will also be a new limited edition model as well as several small changes across the range that will significantly improve the safety
and comfort of every model. The most notable of these is new palm rests added to the hand grip of every model and new ergonomic seats. In what will be a welcome addition by many, storage space in the top-end models has also been increased by nearly 30%. And there will be a choice of new colours throughout the model range. The 2016 Spark, has very few changes, although there are a couple of modifications that will make a big difference to the comfort of riders. The Spark, like all other 2016 SeaDoo models, gets a new handlebar grip design and a new seat. The palm extension on the hand grip allows your hand to sit flat, rather than wrapping around the more traditional hand grip.

S T R O P S R E W O JFK P G IN H IS IF K S T E KING OF J New Zealand’s biggest all jet-ski fishing competition takes place twice a year, with the HQ at the impressive venue of JFK Powersports in Mt Wellington. The next event is scheduled for April, 2016, and it is already attracting a lot of interest. The sport of jetski fishing is continuing to grow and the social involvement is proving very popular with anglers, keen to meet others likeminded enjoying the sport. This event hosted by Andrew Hill from Jetskifishing will be the twelfth King of Jetskifishing competition and
has seen a diverse field of keen jetski fisho’s attending over this time. The start format is the ever popular amazing race format, which sees all anglers starting at a convenient one base carpark start. All entrants are required to attend the early start briefing with their skis at Lloyd Elsmore Park, East Auckland. On registration at the Jetskifishing tent, entrants receive their complimentary sponsor’s goodies, a riders briefing and then the mass start that allows anglers to leave and launch at whichever
ramp suits their strategy on the day. With an attractive $7,000 prize pool, some of the anglers take the competition quite serious and will travel as far as Tairua and back, in the small eight and half hour fishing window. The competition has all the expected classes to make for a fun and exciting event. There are also bonus classes, Teams and also a Legend of Jetskifishing, for the angler who can catch the most target species in one day. www.jetskifishing.co.nz WWW.BOATMAGS.COM 139

ALEX WITH A MONSTER.
The venue for our stay is the perfect base located below the beautiful Moehau Mountain, on the Coromandel Peninsula. One of the many attractions to the venue for our ‘Goes Wild Jetskifishing Experiences’ is that it allows us the choice to fish either side of the peninsula. This means that with most wind directions, we can still get out on the water regardless of weather. These Jetski fishing experiences are for three nights, which gives plenty of time for us to all wind-down and enjoy a holiday. Over the four days fishing, anglers learn more about the fishery, while fishing with others that also increases their sea confidence. On our recent ‘Monster’ Snapper trip, the results were outstanding with some great sized fish caught very close to our launching base. How about a 70cm
Snapper caught in 10m of water, only 500 m from where we launched! Alex, fishing two up with her husband on their Sea-Doo GTX pulled in another big Snapper to show the team how it was done. This wasn’t their first trip away with us, they had enjoyed the previous adventures so much, they have now become regulars! Caught on the Gulp Nemesis - Curried Chicken, Alex is now top of the New Zealand Jetskifishing Club leader board, amongst 80 other Jetskifishing anglers. There were plenty more nice catches from these all year round Jetski fishos, I can’t help but encourage you to sign up for one of these great adventures. We have more trips planned for 2016. www.jetskifishing.co.nz Ph: +64 21 864 560 WWW.BOATMAGS.COM 141

The Wetbike is challenging to ride because it does require a good deal of balance. It was powered by a Suzuki 2 stroke engine, and a small pump-jet. During the latter years of Wetbikes (late 1980s), there were considerable advances such as 60hp Suzuki 800cc engines, and the Metton hulls, which were much lighter than previous models. Eventually the Wetbike gave way to the new personal watercraft (PWC) such as the Yamaha WaveRunner, mainly because they are much easier to ride. They were last produced in 1992. The original Wetbike was designed by Nelson Tyler. The first appearance of the Wetbike in a film was in the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. In one scene, right before the film’s end, Bond is seen riding on a Wetbike (the actual Spirit Marine prototype) to villain 142 PACIFIC PWC 2016
Karl Stromberg’s lair, the submersible fortress Atlantis. Bond refers to the Wetbike as a Q gadget. The Wetbike appeared in 1982 in CHiPs episode “Overload”. After a short recreational excursion on the Wetbikes, Ponch and Jon chase down microchip thieves trying to escape in a speedboat using the Wetbikes. The Wetbike also appeared in the 1986 comedy Police Academy 3: Back in Training, in which a group of Wetbikes and Kawasaki JS550 stand up jet skis were used by the police to chase down thieves in speedboats during the movie’s ending water chase scene. It also appeared in the 1990 George Clooney film Red Surf, in which it was used by a gang of surfers to transport cocaine. Throughout its production run, which lasted from 1978 through 1992, the Wetbike
received various changes, upgrades, technical advancements, and additional safety features. The most notable changes being the introduction in 1985 of a strong, exceptionally lightweight Metton body unit and 1986, the introduction of a 60 hp, 800cc Suzuki motor. There are many personal watercraft produced today that reach speeds far in excess of those speeds that were achieved by the Wetbike. However, nothing found on the water today has the distinctive, graceful appearance of a Wetbike or imitates the ride characteristics of all the freedom and feel of a motorcycle. Why? Because the Wetbike is the only personal watercraft that has front steering, producing an exhilarating feeling of turn carving maneuverability that no other watercraft can match. To achieve this, the Wetbike rises up

on two skis to its planning position and then skims across the water as a hydrofoil water cycle. Precise cornering abilities and excellent handling characteristics are attributed to the “HydroLink” front suspension system, a uniquely responsive front steering system and skis that are hydro-dynamically designed, all combining to produce maximum turn carving ability and graceful maneuverability. You handle Wetbike like a motorcycle. Lean into turns, respond to the feel and Wetbike responds right back. To come to a stop, ease up on the throttle and Wetbike settles gently into the water again. It does the same if you take a spill, with a safety tether switch and spring loaded “off throttle”. You don’t see a lot of Suzuki Wetbikes on the water these days, but there are some enthusiasts who have restored them and still enjoy a unique ride they give. WWW.BOATMAGS.COM 143

ANDREW HILL GIVES US AN INTRODUCTION TO JETSKIFISHING AND OFFERS SOME TIPS ON HOW TO S E T Y O U R P W C U P T O H E L P Y O U C AT C H M O R E F I S H . Jetskifishing started for me back in 2007 and while I appreciate that people will attempt the sport with different levels of equipment, I will highlight the many options. Obviously with purchasing a PWC there is the usual attraction of adrenalin fuelled action from simply being on the water, towing water toys or just cruising to a cool destination. But imagine the additional excitement of catching a big snapper as well! A reality is, the majority of us Jetskifisho’s are 30 plus and are mature enough to know that hours of hooning up down the beaches trying
to impress girls or onlookers on a how cool my jet-ski looks is a short term thrill. Going for an adventure out and beyond at full throttle, appreciating the different scenery and catching fish, can be just as addictive. That’s why I love the sport! Firstly to get started with the sport, assuming you have the suitable craft that suits your planned adventures. For most of us that’s getting a feed of Snapper or Kingfish. Keep in mind that not everyone is in search nor has the time to catch a Marlin, so my options won’t go as far as game fishing level.
I have fished off all major brands and various models, and experience says that the bigger the hull, the better. There is no need to be in search of supercharged and turbocharged watercraft, you can only ride so fast too and from your spot. Naturally aspirated engines are less maintenance, more reliable and best long-term resale value. Next on your list is rider comfort, maintenance costs, storage and features such as reverse, cruise control, adjustable handlebars, etc.

A WELL SETUP PWC, READY TO CATCH THE 20 POUNDERS!
KEY POINTS If new to the sport there are a few key points to educate yourself on: • Understand Maritime boating laws. • Start the ski in the necessary depth water to avoid damage to the impellor. • Familiarise yourself with launch areas, as some are tidal and there will be no water to retrieve your ski at the ramp. • Check weather forecasts. • Become a member of Coastguard or at least lodge a trip report with family or friends. • Familiarise yourself on how to flush, wash, maintain and service your ski. Learn more about the sport at the New Zealand Jetskifishing Club at www.nzjetskifishing.co.nz
SAFETY EQUIPMENT Safety equipment is paramount, the sport is growing rapidly and no matter how experienced you are, you need to be prepared for all eventualities. We often will travel as far as 40nm offshore on late model fully kitted out craft for fishing, but with experience and a support crew. Some of the equipment we carry: • Vest. • Cellphone (fully charged) in a dry bag or case. • Handheld, Floating, High Wattage VHF. 146 PACIFIC PWC 2016
• • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Personal Locator Beacon (Worn at all times). Permanently mounted 25watt VHF for poor signal conditions. Shut off valve if you need a tow. First Aid Kit. Tow rope. Emergency Anchor. Electronic Flare. Drinking Water. Eyewear, Jetskifishing Mask or Goggles. Thermal Clothing. Footwear. Wet Weather Gear. Riding Gloves (Fingerless). Sunscreen.
FISHING TIPS I have found in New Zealand the most practical and successful fishing method off PWC’s is soft baiting and the reward keeps on coming when setup correctly. Don’t take shortcuts on tackle quality, the persistence of soft baiting has seen me catch three fish over 20 pounds off the Sea-Doo GTX in a recent two-week session. Once you have your ski, safety equipment and fishing rods (I only take two, or three maximum if fishing with a passenger). Attaching a cooler/chilly bin/ice chest to your fishing platform is the next stage of enjoying the sport to what makes it so exciting for us.
The key is to be able to ride your ski to the same speeds (unrigged) with all your fishing equipment attached. We typically ride to and from our spots at 100kph plus, so the hardware needs to be built tough and well secured. You don’t want to be limited by the speed factor by worrying while riding of losing your fishing gear or complete kit off the back! We Kiwis have DIY in our nature, but in my experience adding a fishing kit is not worth reinventing the wheel, it will cost you more money in the long run with your R&D. Bigger has not necessarily proven a winner when it comes to fishing kits. Many dream of filling the big bin and reality is, you don’t need a chilly bin that keeps ice cool for seven days. My experience is lightweight, easily removable and practical if you catch big Kingfish or keep a trophy fish we have large catch bags for that. Some tips for a practical fishing kit/chilly bin set up: • Securely attach at the main tow point on the ski. • Use fixed points, not universal fitments that can move up and down or rattle/ fracture at speed. • Add rod holders at convenient locations, that are easily reached. • Uses rod tube inserts to prevent additional butt damage to lightweight, soft bait rods.
A CHILLY/ISKY BIN IS A MUST.
•
•
•
• •
Leashes to secure rods and nets to the rod holders (reel covers also attach to protect reels from salt spray) are a good addition. Use marine tested tie down points, custom length bungy cords or rack straps to secure the kit at speed. Have an easily removable chilly bin, so you don’t need to remove the mainframe to handle your fish. Always have a fish measure and drain plug. Additional equipment can be attached to your fishing kit such as a dive knife, icky, ice scoop, internal tray storage and large catch bags.
If your budget only allows you to purchase an entry or mid-priced unit and are considering installing it yourself, you can weigh up the following pros and cons. • Small units are easily mountable, but
•
not so rugged, so they don’t last in the constant salt environment or what we call the extreme event if submarining your watercraft. Avoid mounting in glovebox areas if
FISHFINDERS A MUST Many people new to the concept of jetskifishing are amazed by what extent we rig our craft. When I mention we also have electronics fitted such as fish finder/GPS units they don’t understand, until actually experiencing for themselves how much it changes their catching. The aftermarket electronics are the reason I have such great success with my jetskifishing. Fishfinders start as low as $200 but, unfortunately, the environment of jetskifishing will test the product beyond its IPX ratings and more than likely spend little and endure ongoing issues unless you are a fair weather fisherperson. possible. Water pools on the screen, resulting in the screen being hard to read and install reduces your practical glove box storage space. If dash mounting, I recommend additional screwing plates to strengthen the dash. A unit needs to waterproof to a higher level and it is recommended to use an Ultimate Rain Coat for added saltwater protection. The 12-volt power source, fused direct from the battery should have marine cabling. Transducers on low-cost units often have the transom transducer mounted internally inside various model skis at an area of flat and thin surface locations. Some skis are double skin hulls and installation is recommended by a specialist who can guarantee the reading to be true downward and reading depth at speed. Transom transducers can easily be mounted on the rear transom of the PWC. This will require further holes to

be drilled in your hull and take note that there is a risk of a dirty water reading while the jet pump is active. Damage to the transducer while beach parking is also possible and often the transducer will kick up while at speed to your spots. The premium level of sounder/GPS units on watercraft are 7” MFDs, utilising sonar charts, integrating with next level transducers, wi-fi options and more features than you would know what to do with on a PWC. Any bigger on a ski is going to be difficult to secure and draw more battery current and more suited for a boat. In my experience, touch screen units also require a button option to function on a PWC, as when your fingers are cold or wet you won’t always be able to operate it through the screen. As silly as it sounds the option of a waterproof remote attached to the handlebar makes for added convenience while riding, so you can operate basic functions on the units at speed. Once again there are options for transducers,
starting at # 1 for the best in performance and convenience, you need to decide what works for your budget and expectations to how deep you plan on fishing. # 1 Thru-hull transducer (mounts from underneath hull, bronze construction with a threaded nut internally in the hull) the transducer is a tilted element, allowing a true downward reading below the hull, adjustable to the degree of the hull. # 2 In-Hull transducer (oil bath) reads through the hull mounted internally, having to read though the hull thickness and less performance over the Thru-hull, requires more flat install area than the higher priced thru-hull. # 3 Transom transducer, mounts off the rear transom, with the reading often getting interference from dirty water by the jet pump. # 4 Transom transducer mounted internally, mounted to the inside of the hull reducing

Most sounders/GPS units will operate sufficiently off the PWC main battery, however for added piece of mind many experienced jetski fisho’s opt for a secondary battery to run all add-on accessories. This feature if installed with a VSR and dual battery switch, which can allow you to switch to combine batteries so you can get home if ever experiencing a main battery failure while out fishing. High powered GPS units will also drain power on a factory battery.A secondary battery install will eliminate this inconvenience with an uninterrupted power supply to accessories. Many anglers are taking full advantage of small weather windows and fast fishing trips, often nipping out first thing in the morning to their pick fishing this spots. Fishing first light can often see you riding in low light, navigation lights are an easy fit to the personal watercraft.
OTHER ACCESSORIES Other accessories to consider so you can enjoy jetskifishing and be well prepared as I am, are: • Jetskifishing Mask • Thermal Balaclava • Handle Bar Pouch • Reel Covers • Lure Wrap • Catch Bag • Gaff • Rollered Trailer with guide poles and wind up jockey wheel. • Keel protector to avoid damage with beach launching and retrieval. • Sand Anchor for launching and retrieving in rocky areas. • Minimal tackle in a soft pouch so not to be damage while riding to and from spots. Our sport is fun and every session is a new adventure, do it once and do it right and you can enjoy the lifestyle of jetskifishing.

With the season approaching (and little luck on the fishing front the previous year) we felt we needed to target fishing with a little more thought and technology. After chatting with the Raymarine team at Lusty and Blundell – (NZ’s Raymarine distributors) – who had previous experience in PWC sounder/GPS set up, they recommended a Raymarine Dragonfly 5 PRO to be ideal for the job, and an easy three step installation. I was invited along for the exercise, just to see how easy it was. As explained there only seemed to be three main steps. The unit came boxed with a transducer, head unit and wiring loom.
mounted transducer, but you can also opt for an in-hull transducer, which does not need any drilling in the hull at all, but must be mounted flat. The third choice is the thru-hull option which mounts under the hull. Drilling through the hull on any boat always sends shivers up my spine, but I was assured the plugs and wiring entering the hull would be well waterproofed. We drilled holes to mount the transducer itself and then a hole to feed the wiring through into the PWC. Next step was to cable tie the transducer cable away from the engine and feed it up forward to where we were to mount the Raymarine Dragonfly unit.
STEP ONE: First thing was to mount the transducer. We decided on a transom
STEP TWO: In mounting the Raymarine Dragonfly 5 Pro unit, there are a few options.
The easiest on the Yamaha WaveRunner was on top of the screw cap to the waterproof storage container And if we ever wanted to sell the PWC with out the unit, all we would have to do up front is to replace the screwon cap. This position also offers a great view of the unit in both sitting and standing positions. It also has the option to swivel and tilt and be removed whenever required and is well away from the turn area of the handlebars. STEP THREE: The final step was a relatively simple step, of running the wiring from the Raymarine Dragonfly head unit through to the battery again using cable ties to keep the wiring away from the engine. TOO EASY The whole process was reasonable simple, and should take most about an hour and a half to two hours – depending on the model of your PWC. With the PWC being a little more compact than a traditional sized boat, I could only imagine how simple installing a Raymarine Dragon Fly would be to set up on a full size boat. Oh well, off to see if the Raymarine Dragon Fly helps me bring back more bounty from the sea.
