ased on a Zodiac’s 5.50 or 7m hulls, SEAir has added their own foils to bring the boat into a whole new dimension. The carbon fibre foils can be either manually or electronically raised and lowered and you can have automatic assistance with management of the trim and the foils.

The Flying RIB provides stability and unmatched seaworthiness due to the foils which function as shock absorbers. Active or deactivate the system by pressing on a simple button, beachable, berthing alongside a pontoon, and use your trailer as easily as before due to the retractable foils (electrically). This innovation has been

designed, so that does not complicate the use of the semi-rigid at all. The patented SEAir foiling system is a revolution for fuel consumption, speed and acceleration of the RIB. The boat rises onto the foils at around 15 knots and has an optimal speed use of 20-25 knots. www.seaair.fr

NEW ZEALAND STRONG PRESENCE AT METS M

ETSTRADE the world’s largest B2B trade exhibition for leisure marine equipment will take place in RAI Amsterdam on 13-15 November and no fewer than 15 New Zealand companies will be exhibiting. METSTRADE is strictly a show for marine industry professionals where the latest in marine equipment are showcased. The show attracts close to 1500 exhibitors, spread over multi halls, including one dedicated entirely to construction material. Kiwi companies have long supported the show, and it is encouraging to see that some of our leading marine brands will be showcased to the world. Peter Busfield, CEO of the MIA says that METS is an important show for the Kiwi industry and it reinforces the commitment to innovation and technical development that our companies have. “Many local companies pull above their weight, and we have some of the world leaders in their particular fields that call New Zealand home and will continue to do so”, says Busfield. The Kiwi companies at this year’s show are incredibly diverse from world leaders in marine electronics Fusion Entertainment, ENL, designers and manufacturers of the WAASP multi beam sounder, to clothing manufacturer Events Clothing and aerial manufacturer Pacific Aerials. Amongst some of the new products on display will be from leaders in hidden panel mounting systems, Fastmount, who will exhibit at METSTRADE for the 12th year running in 2018. They will reveal at the show a brand new stand entirely constructed of Fastmount, to demonstrate the products’ potential and give their customers the most interactive experience possible. Fastmount will be showcasing the new heavy duty TC-F6H from its Textile Range, which was designed as a heavy duty mounting solution for exterior cushions on superyachts. Oceanmax, the developer and manufacturer of Propspeed, will also showcase its new product, Lightspeed. Lightspeed is a revolutionary product specifically designed for underwater lights. Nontoxic and easy to apply, Lightspeed is the first aftermarket coating of its kind. ConnexWire is New Zealand’s leading wiring and electrical solutions provider. They design and manufacture switch panels and plug and play electrical systems for Marine and Automotive O.E.M’s across Australasia. They are actively looking to expand their distribution network for their retail products and harness business globally. Two times DAME category award winners TruDesign, are known for innovative, highquality composite products in the specialist area of Thru Hulls, Ball Valves, Vented Loops Y Valves and associated plumbing fittings. More innovation will be shown this year including their Saddle Clip and Base assembly enabling the efficient routing of wiring and plumbing hoses. Ultralon Foam Group will be looking to expand sales of their U-Dek anti-slip, closed-cell foam deck treads. U-Dek is an easy to maintain alternative to moulded in anti-slip or painton textures for traction in wet areas, is UV protected and non-absorbent. Paul Goddard, General Manager of Ultralon Foam Group, says: “We are looking to expand our dealer network in Europe and can offer CNC cutting heads for foam sheets and full technical support to OEMs and start-up builders”. Another new Kiwi exhibitor at METSTRADE will be Tectrax with their revolutionary hubmounted electric drive amphibious system. Tectrax is an All Wheel Electric Drive system (AWED) that powers a vessel down the ramp, through sand and grass, and into the water. “We see Europe as an important market for us as we have an all-electric amphibious system that will now open up a lot of the lakes and areas that are restricted to conventional petrol and diesel power boats”, says Tectrax’s Fraser Brown. “We are already working with a number of clients who have expressed interest in using our system in their electric-powered craft, so it’s a great and efficient combination”, added Brown. Busfield says.” With the New Zealand marine industry extremely positive at the moment, buoyed by the forthcoming Americas Cup in 2021, shows like METSTRADE are extremely important to the growth in exports, particularly for our equipment manufacturers”.

12 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

came out of the Auckland On Water Boat Show with a real positive feeling - the industry seemed to be in good spirits with some great sales made throughout the show. On the first day, in the first hour, we had a subscriber call at our stand after signing up for a brand new $3.5m Maritimo - what a start for the Maritimo team. It did not end there with various sales made on and off the water for many exhibitors, with many more sales pending sea trials after the show. The Auckland On Water Boat Show, in its 20th year, reported a positive 12% increase in visitors on last year’s show numbers. The quality in displays was once again world class. In my 30th year in the marine industry, our shows down under seem to get better and better. Of all the shows I have visited around the world, our displays and exhibitions in New Zealand and Australia are amongst the best. Standout shows for me being the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show and the Auckland On Water, Sydney International Boat Show and the Ft Lauderdale Boat Show. Sanctuary Cove is also one of my more popular shows, and while it dropped off in recent years when a rival show, Gold Coast Expo popped up, this year, with the other show now no longer, it has come right back up as a seriously good show and well worth attending. I did a rough count and reckoned I have attended around 140 boat shows in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, London and the USA. The Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat show tops the list at 30, followed by SIBS (22), SCIBS (20) and the Auckland On Water also 20. I also managed to get in a couple of Ft Lauderdale Boat Shows, back in the day when the New Zealand marine industry had a big presence. Hard to forget those big nights lead by the dynamic Mike Hodson and evening functions courtesy of MAREX. Before the Auckland On Water, there was IMTEC NZ, held at Princes Wharf. The brainchild of Ken Lusty and Warwick Brown, we exhibited eight times. The Auckland On Water eventually superseded their show. There were also the regional shows in Wellington, Tauranga, Hamilton, Invercargill and Christchurch, all of which proved a significant boost for the local marine industry. The Hamilton show gained some traction and got great patronage, but sadly it’s no more. I was also fortunate to get to the Melbourne Show three times, the Brisbane Show twice and a few years ago attended the Perth show. The shows have taken me all around the world, and I have loved them all. With this many shows under my belt - I feel qualified enough to be able to judge a good show. So a big congratulations to the marine industry and show organisers, both here in NZ and Australia for their efforts in putting together some of the world’s best exhibitions, of the finest boats and marine products, much of it designed and manufactured locally. Well done to all - let’s hope the weather for the coming season is as good !!! Happy Boating, Doug Dukeson Publisher.

have been lucky to represent two great Kiwi brands (NAVMAN & FUSION). Those of you reading this article, will instantly know the brands because of the great job we did at both companies with our engineering, marketing and PR’. Importantly both brands were financed and supported by Sir Peter Maire ( Pete to everyone that knows him ). There is no question that Pete is a consummate entrepreneur and just loves products and technology. His love also of boating made it easy for all of us associated with the two companies, to excite him with product ideas that maybe other people would not have financed. Having both businesses based at the bottom of the world, did not hinder us and actually made us stronger and hungrier to succeed. There is no question that when I travel overseas for work and I travel a lot, that coming from New Zealand is a major advantage and it helps to get you through doors. People either have had a good experience dealing with Kiwis or just have New Zealand in their mind as a dream destination to visit. Those in business that don’t play the New Zealand card, absolutely should!! We are still seen as a ‘clever’ country especially in the marine industry and winning the last America’s Cup on a small budget proved this point to the world. Thinking outside the square seems to be something that we do well here and is appreciated by others. By the time this article is read I would have attended a boat show in Europe, Australia and America. These shows are critical to attend if you are wanting to connect with your customers and importantly those in the marine trade. I can honestly say that the Auckland In-Water show down in the Viaduct, is one of the better ones around. However, if you are wanting to visit a show off-shore then the Fort Lauderdale one in early November is one worth attending but give yourself at least two days. If you want something closer then the Sanctuary Cove boat show in Queensland or the Sydney boat show, are also very good with plenty to see. After 25 years in the marine industry I can say that boats and the equipment now available are a testament to the inventiveness and hard work off all those involved. At NAVMAN we helped people to navigate using a new technology called GPS. This technology is now taken for granted but it is still amazing to switch a product on and find out where you are within 10m anywhere on the surface of the earth. Now at FUSION we give customers the chance to enjoy music while they are on their beloved boats. I always try and make sure that our staff continue to remember that our job is to help people have an even better time while out on the water. Everyone seems to be ‘busy’ these days but boating is still the best activity to let your worries float away and just enjoy your time outdoors with friends and family.

he Galeon 640 Fly was awarded the prestigious WORLD YACHT TROPHY as the “Most Innovative Yacht” in the 60-80 feet category at the recent 2018 Cannes Yachting Festival. Described as a “tricked-out cruiser” with an array of clever features never before seen in its class, the Galeon 640 Fly boasts innovations like the beach mode, retractable front windshield and carbon reinforced construction which impressed Jury members who declared the 20.8m flybridge model a genuine “game changer”. A true transformer motor yacht, the Galeon 640 Fly revolutionises the segment with unique design elements that allow for bigger volume and better space distribution, all while maintaining a lean, assertive profile for which Galeon is renowned. The aft cockpit dining area with rotating sofa option is inviting for up

to eight guests, protected from the elements by the electric sunshade with an entertainment system and 40-inch TV sliding up from the kitchen top. The hydraulic swim platform is capable of handling all manner of water toys and tender, plus provides easy access to the skipper’s or multi-purpose cabin and a 3.2 m tender garage. The top deck comprises a generous dining space, a full-sized bar and plenty of lounge space surrounding the helm. The bow deck area is the epitome of innovation, with its electric front window entrance revealing two separate movable sofas with integrated foldable tables that convert into sunpads. The famed Galeon Beach Mode makes the 640 Fly an entertainer’s dream, fitted with 6m balconies with paratially glazed floors and a breakfast bar on both sides. Inside, the saloon is a study in space and light, with separate lounge and dining areas with large

side windows, a bar and main helm. An innovative two-way stair system allows a three full-beam cabin layout, or a four-cabin layout to suit larger families and charter groups. For those buyers who prefer a single level coupe layout, the Galeon 650 Skydeck model would be of interest as she offers a similar main deck and accommodation layout to the 640 Fly without the addition of the flybridge. Represented in Australia and New Zealand by Alexander Marine Australia, located in The Boat Works, Coomera on Queensland’s Gold Coast, Galeon will make its debut on the Australian boating scene in early 2019. The first two models to arrive will be the Galeon 460 Fly and 510 Skydeck models. Alexander Marine Australia sales@alexandermarineaust.com.au Ph +61 07 5618 0000 www.alexandermarineaust.com.au

ealegs, a world leader in amphibious vehicles has released their all new Sealegs Electric E4. Designed and built in their Auckland, New Zealand factory, the Sealegs Electric E4 represents the first steps by the company into a whole new market. This Sealegs Electric E4 combines the latest advances in lithium battery and brushless electric hub motor technology. It has been developed based on the patented Sealegs amphibious system together with over 17 years of Sealegs proprietary amphibious system knowledge, marinisation techniques and experience. Powerful, high-torque hub-mounted brushless electric motors effortlessly drive the Sealegs Electric craft out of the water and up beaches and through difficult terrain. The high density 7kWh lithium battery delivers up to 20 return launch and retrieve journeys on land between charges. Charging is via a built-in mains charger as well as via regenerative braking. Mechanical brakes are integrated into the hub motors. The Sealegs Electric E4 incorporates a Sealegs Amphibious Traction and Control System called AmpTracs. Attendance & Sales up at AOWBS THE NEW ZEALAND BOATING INDUSTRY IS REPORTING INCREASED NUMBERS AT THE COUNTRY’S LARGEST ON-WATER BOAT SHOW, AND EXHIBITORS SAY THE AUDIENCE REPRESENTED A STRONG BUYING MARKET AS THEY REPORT BUOYANT SALES AND QUALITY ENQUIRIES.

A

12% increase overall in visitors has been reported by the Auckland On Water Boat Show, in comparison to last year’s gate figures. “We had a successful number of sales across the range, and it was the best Auckland show for us in years,” added Maritimo’s Tom Barry-Cotter. “We had a great response to the X-Series debut and a lot of interest in the performance of Maritimos - particularly their sea-going ability after bringing the boats across on their own bottoms. It’s been one of the top-performing shows this year so far,” said Barry-Cotter. The Auckland results follow on from highly successful sales results at both the Sydney and Sanctuary Cove shows, the latter seeing total sales of more than $40 million recorded. New Zealand company, 36 Degrees Brokers, partially credits the good results to changes it’s observed in the

New Zealand consumer. “We introduced all new vessels, never before seen in New Zealand, which highlight a relaxed European style with plenty of space to lounge,” says 36 Degrees’ Conrad Gair. With three Leopard Catamarans already ordered for New Zealanders and set to arrive over the next year, including the elegant lines of the Leopard 45, Leopard Catamaran’s David Flynn knew the innovative, roomy design of these cats were appreciated by Kiwis. “We’ve had great people coming through and it’s been a very pleasant experience, with a good pace to the show,” says Flynn. Auckland-based boat syndication company Ownaship agreed. “It’s been our most successful show yet,” says Ownaship’s Chris Janes. “We’ve had fantastic enquiries, great quality of people coming through, and

20 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

found that nothing was a real issue. It was well-organised and very relaxed.” Hamilton-based Tristram Marine builds well-designed trailer boats that have garnered it a passionate following. “It’s been a brilliant opportunity to reengage with owners and future owners alike,” says Tristram Marine’s business development manager, Tristram Fink. “We’ve had a lot of genuine enquiries and being in front of our customers further reinforces positive feedback on the brand and vessels we’re creating.” This year was the 20th edition of New Zealand’s largest on-water boat show and was the last year the show will be held in the ANZ Viaduct Events Centre for the foreseeable future. From next year the show will shift slightly to spread around the Viaduct Harbour, creating a buzzing atmosphere in the heart of Auckland’s marine precinct. auckland-boatshow.com

D&B AWARD

FOR LONG SERVICE Two decades of being an exhibitor at the Auckland On Water Boat Show has been recognised. Having been an exhibitor at the Auckland On Water Boat Show for the past 20 years, we have seen a lot of changes. The show has gone from a handful of on land exhibitors and boats in the water around the Viaduct to a major show in the South Pacific. In recognition of our long-standing support and participation in the show, NZ Marine presented us, Barry Thompson and Doug Dukeson with a 20 Year Anniversary Certificate. We received this along with many other marine businesses who have exhibited at the show for the past two decades. The show has always been an important marketing exercise for us and will remain so into the future. Our congratulations to all the other recipients who received an award.

Naiad 10m Yamaha XTO 425hp The boat is a Naiad 10m centre console, destined for a customer serious about getting to the best fishing spots quickly. The new engines deliver breath-taking performance - a top speed of 58 knots and acceleration to match. At full noise, they will undoubtedly drink the gas, but cruising at 32 knots economy is a respectable 88 litres per hour. The boat is fitted with Yamaha’s intelligent Helm Master low-speed manoeuvring system bringing joystick control and virtual anchor system. The engines turn independently to achieve sideways movement and holding station. Although the engines are large, they can still be fitted in twin and triple installations at standard centres and so independent turning of the engine is outward. The finish on this boat is right up there with the best - as you would expect

of an over $450,000 craft. There are four Ullman shock-mitigating seats, a folding aft transom seat, a small sun longer ahead of the console, and a T-top with solid glass screen. Inside the console are a marine toilet and plenty of storage. At 3.2m beam and a tad over 3,000 kgs lightship, this is a boat that is going to live in a dry stack. The hull is all-alloy, with closely-spaced frames and longitudinal stringers for commercial-grade strength. This particular boat uses Naiad’s foam fender system with what looks like a regular air collar but is actually solid foam inside. The 10m Naiad hull carries the extra weight and power of the big engines effortlessly and feels very stable at all speeds. Driving this boat is incredibly fun - just like an expensive sports car. www.naiad.co.nz

SEAFARER TAKE HOT AIR WELDING TO A NEW LEVEL

After having built a custom-made hot air welder, Seafarer Inflatables have developed hot air welding to a whole new level. Seafarers Neil Curtling calls it the Dual Seal Construction System, which means all the tubes are sealed 100% both internally and externally. They have also developed this system to weld internally and externally both the cone ends and internal baffles. “The result for our customer is the very best air retention and a solid, reliable weld. The hot air welded cones and baffles are we believe a world first. Normally these are Radio Frequency welded which means they are not internally and externally sealed” says Curtling. Seafarer is the first NZ manufacturer to manufacture polyurethane hot air welded airtight tubes. Curtling

First AT43 Getting Closer

NEW 9M SMUGGLER RIB

Alan Tongs Boatbuilders recently popped the first AT43 hull out of the mould, a new production model designed by Elite Marine. This 13.2m semi-production sedan cruiser is offered with a variety of internal layouts. Being a semi-production boat, owners will be able to have a lot of input into the final layout, so there is still the opportunity for a personal touch. GRP moulded, but with so many options it will feel like a custom build. The new Elite AT43 is offered in single, or twin-engine configurations, shaft drive, bow/stern thrusters, two or three cabins, galley up or down, and with great choices of interior finishes. The first boat is sold and is due for launch in early 2019. www.alantongsboatbuilders

Smuggler Marine has recently delivered an impressive 9m RIB powered by a pair of Evinrude ETEC 250s. The big RIB also will boast a full Simrad package including NSS16 touchscreen with X-Sonic B275 transducer, Structure Scan 3D, CHIRP sonar, 4G Broadband radar, autopilot and VHF. The owner has requested a sleeping arrangement inside the console, along with a custom built-in cooking facility in the seat. Fishing accessories are plentiful as this will primarily be a fishing boat with extras, so the owner can reach those remote spots and stay this night if needed. To make sure his boat is a real head turner, the stainless is bright orange, with orange accents on the upholstery, engine and hull. www.smuggler.co.nz

HORIZON YACHTS Adds new FD77 Following the tremendous success of Horizon Yachts’ Fast Displacement series, the yard and designer Cor D. Rover have once again partnered to collaborate on a new design, the FD77 Skyline. The new FD77 Skyline joins the FD85, FD87 Skyline, FD 102 Skyline and the FD 125 Skyline to add to the current FD series line up- the FD 77 was specifically designed to appeal to active owner operators. Characterised by large windows, an expansive 23’ beam, a striking exterior profile and the High Performance Piercing Bow (HPPB) hull design, the FD series has been exceptionally well received by the global market. Since the first of the Fast Displacement series

was unveiled in 2016, Horizon has now sold eleven FD85 motoryachts to clients worldwide. Interest from current Horizon owners who operate their own yachts inspired the design of the FD77, which retains the same styling and spacious characteristics of her larger sisters, wrapped in a compact package that affords ease of operation and excellent seakeeping capabilities. Available in an open flybridge or enclosed bridge version, the FD77 maximises its impressive interior volume with unique sections of floorto-ceiling windows on the main deck from the salon forward into the master stateroom. A sliding glass door to starboard in the main salon accesses the

exterior walkway leading to the forward deck, further enhancing the openness of this pocket superyacht. On the lower deck, three additional staterooms, including two VIPs, echo the feeling of spaciousness found throughout. Aft, a massive beach club invites relaxation at sea level and located just forward of the beach club is a full head and additional cabin or crew space. Powered by twin CAT C18As of 1136hp each, hull one of the FD77 is currently in production for the American market and is expected to debut at the Palm Beach boat show and Miami Boat show, while hulls two and three are intended for the European and Australian markets, respectively. www.horizonyachtaus.com

Alan Warwick Has Left Us New Zealand has lost one of its most talented yacht designers, with the passing of Alan Bruce Warwick. Alan was arguably one of New Zealand’s most prolific and internationally respected yachts designers and a strong advocate for NZ and the yacht building industry. As Principal of Warwick Yacht Design, Alan was at the forefront of innovative designs both in the power and sailing sectors for many decades. He offered a full all in one service from initial concept to total project coordination and was one of New Zealand`s highest profile designers on the international scene. Alan specialised in world-class luxury power and sailboats between 50 and 200 feet in length as well as high-speed power catamarans, workboats, ferries and patrol boats. His ability to create visions on paper and then transform those 30 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

ideas into some of the most stunningly attractive boats in the world was legendary. Vessels such as Laffaire, Spirit of Fitzroy, Al Duhail, Gramac, Northstar and Akhaliq were all penned from the prolific board of Alan. Now under the able leadership of son, Bruce, Alan’s business continues, with current projects including a Warwick 103 sport fisherman being built at Yachting Developments. He will be sadly missed.

PALM BEACH ANNOUNCE NEW GT50 Palm Beach recently debuted the GT50 a visually elegant cruiser capable of 40-plus knots, with an economic cruise speed in the mid-30 knot range. Two versions have been announced, an Express and an Open . The focus is on lightweight, strong construction. The first Palm Beach GT50 Express made its debut in September at the Newport International Boat Show. A GT50 Open will quickly follow, and is set for display at the 2019 Düsseldorf Boat Show in January 2019. Initial sea trials hit the company’s precise target top-speed projection of 42 knots and a cruising speed of 35 knots with a pair 600-horsepower Volvo IPS 800s. “When I started Palm Beach almost 25 years ago, I had one over-arching set of objectives: to design and build the best-performing, most efficient and most beautiful yachts

on the water,” said Mark Richards, Palm Beach Motor Yachts founder and CEO. “The GT50 represents a culmination of the best of Palm Beach, and there’s really nothing out there like it today.”The GT Series incorporates Palm Beach’s unique hull design that results in less resistance to achieve plane while keeping the bow in the water”. The hull is a fully infused vinylester cored e-glass construction that is complemented by a fully infused, 100% carbonfibre deck and superstructure. The deck and bulkheads are structurally bonded to the hull for increased strength and rigidity, forming a semi-monococque shell that produces a far stronger result. Palm Beach gave significant attention to the GT50’s outdoor spaces in order to comfortably accommodate large

groups of guests while underway. Two L-shaped settees in the cockpit flank a transom door to the large teak swim platform. The helm deck is ideally suited for al fresco dining or lounging while underway, with an L-shaped settee and a straight settee. For the Express model, a large opening sunroof and Palm Beach’s customary side and aft opening windows provide an open-air atmosphere for an incredible on-thewater experience. Below, the attention to detail continues with contemporary finishes blended into a timeless elegance. Timber options include wenge, teak or ash. Broad selections of designer double-stitched fabrics are wrapped around a spacious forward master stateroom, huge head with shower, large galley and a queen-sized berth aft. www.palmbeachmotoryachts.com

RACING CHAMP RAPT BY HURRICANE

Dick Johnson is a motor racing legend, with an appetite for speed and performance since 1967 when he burst onto the track. Recently he purchased a Hurricane Fundeck 236 deck boat. “Life changes and your requirements change,” he says. “There’s nothing more important to me than spending time with the family out on the water, day tripping.” His 7.16m “deck boat” as the Americans call them, boasts a sturdy, stable fibreglass “cathedral hull”, wide beam and plenty of room onboard for up to 13 guests. “The kids love it because we can charge up to the Pin [Jumpinpin], beach it and spend the day swimming, having lunch, enjoying the Broadwater. We’re planning to use it fishing, diving, skiing, towing . . . and anything that ends in ‘ING’!” Equipped with Simrad touchscreen sounders, high-tech stereo and subwoofers, lounges that double as beds, bar, table, refrigeration and plenty of storage, the Hurricane 236 is a versatile platform for all kinds of on-water activities. Pontoon boats may have had an aura of “slow and steady” in

previous incarnations, but ask DJ whether his Hurricane deck boat represents a retreat into “old man boating” and you’ll be blasted with an emphatic “HELL NO!” “It tips into turns like a regular boat, plus it has enough grunt to tow skis or inflatables, and to get out of the way of the jetskis. The Hurricane 236 has a top speed of 80km an hour, which is 43 knots, and were decked out with stereo and LED lighting, so you’ll see us coming, and hear us!” Hurricane pioneered the deck boat business in 1974 and are the number one selling deck boat in the world, producing over 22,000 each year from their four factories in Indiana. There are around 60 different models over the size range and innumerable options when it comes to custom colours, finishes and options. www.hurricaneboats.com.au

OBC LEADS IN SUSTAINABLE FISHING ON THE HAURAKI GULF

A

UCKLAND’S OUTBOARD BOATING CLUB (OBC) has taken a responsible and important step by changing the rules of all its fishing competitions to ensure its members remain at the forefront of recreational fishing good practice. The OBC has decided to run all of the club’s fishing competitions on a measure-only basis, giving anglers a choice to either keep or release their catch while still being eligible for prizes. Grant Blair, a director of NZ Fishing Media and founder of the DB Export NZ Fishing Competition, a national annual online contest fished on a measured basis, applauds the move. “Using length measurement as the criteria for assessment provides the foundation for anglers to make the best decisions for our precious resources,” Grant says. “Fishing contests have traditionally

focussed on killing and weighing the biggest fish and the prognosis for a dead fish isn’t exactly rosy,” he says. “Instead, photographing the fish on a length measure empowers contestants to keep the best-eating fish while releasing the rest of the catch. That means OBC members can still be rewarded for a significant catch and also have the option to release it.” The OBC’s CEO, Brian Hood also comments, “Responsible Kiwis no longer want to see the biggest snapper die just for the chance to win a prize. A length competition gives you the opportunity to release a sizeable prizewinning snapper to spawn another day. Anglers now have a choice to put back or keep competition eligible fish,” Brian says. Changing the competition rules at the OBC to ‘length’ rather than ‘weight’ is a great example of the club being on

the right side of the sustainable fishing effort, providing opportunity to help protect the resource of the Hauraki Gulf” Brian says. OBC Commodore, Russell Watson adds “The main point is to encourage a change of mindset from weight to length as the way of measuring one’s fishing success, while at the same time helping the sustainability of our fisheries”. Leading from the front is nothing new to the OBC, whose adoption of the measure-only concept makes it the first club in Aotearoa to do so overall its events. www.obc.co.nz

EW ZEALAND DESIGNERS, Scott Robson, Bill Upfold and Dean Salthouse have all recently announced new sports sedan designs. Hot off the drawing board for Next Generation boats is the new ICON 54S motor yacht. The 5.65m beam and nearly 2m headroom, combined with an extensive list of standard features, make the ICON 54S one of the most prominent volume vessels of its kind. Features include a midship’s full-width owner’s cabin and optional four cabin and three-cabin layouts. A dinghy boot and hydraulic boarding platform for easy use and tender UV protection are

standard as is a cockpit retractable sun shade. Conventional drive and IPS/Zeus pod drive options are available. Bill Upfold, Elite Marine Design’s new 20.5m sports sedan is up to the minute in both styling and good looks. The emphasis is on entertaining and comfortable living with the saloon flowing out to the cockpit all on one level. Water sports are well catered for with a garage that can house a considerable sized tender for off boat activities. With cruise speed approaching 30kts, isolated destinations suddenly become very accessible. Designed by Scott Robson, the

MonteFino R 60 Cabriolet is a new model from KhaShing Enterprises in Taiwan. Standard power will be a pair of Volvo Penta IPS 950. The standard layout has three cabins with a full-width owners stateroom complete with his and hers sinks and a large shower. A double cabin forward has an ensuite, plus there is another twin cabin also with its own bathroom. The saloon has the galley aft with a lift up window and fold away multiplane glass doors to create a flow through to the cockpit. Check out our Sports Sedan feature page 66 this issue.

POWER ON

TORQEEDO ELECTRIC

Editor Barry Thompson checks out the new range of Torqeedo outboards.

Is this the Future of Outboards?

P

ower Equipment New Zealand recently unveiled Torqeedo, to marine journalists and members of the boating, fishing and sailing sectors. The day featured on-water demonstrations of electric outboard motors from across the Torqeedo range. German company Torqeedo is a pioneer in electric propulsion for watercraft. Since it began in 2005, Torqeedo has developed a line-up of safe, environmentally-friendly electric outboards to suit recreational and professional boats. It offers outboards, pods and inboard electric motors either as full electric or hybrid drive systems that extend from 1 hp up to 80 hp. Power Equipment NZ’s national product support manager, Martin Cook, says eco-friendly Torqeedo motors are ideal for New Zealand because electric drive systems cause no water pollution. “Electric motors are safer because there is no need to carry fuel on board the boat. They also offer a more pleasant experience to passengers on the water because there is no noise or exhaust fumes,” Martin says.

Torqeedo motors use lightweight lithium batteries that have some of the highest power densities in the industry, drawing the technology from the automotive industry through a partnership with BMW. Martin says fully-charged Torqeedo lithium batteries will run for 8-10 hours at low throttle. Standard equipment with Torqeedo engines is an onboard computer with a range monitor that tells you how much further you can go with the current battery life. PPB were able experience three models; Ultralight (1 hp equivalent), Travel (1.5 hp and 3 hp equivalent) and the Cruise (5 hp, 8 hp and 20 hp equivalent). First impressions were the total lack of any noise even when the outboards were running, at maximum torque and the instant response to the throttle. The tiller steer models were effortless to use and much like an electric car, the lack of noise meant you didn’t really know the brushless electric motor was even running until you twisted the grip and the boat moved. The same goes for the remote steer versions with a simple throttle lever that provided F/N/R as well as the speed control.

CRUISE The electric outboard motors in the Torqeedo Cruise range consists of four models, from 5hp- 20hp outboard power equivalent in both remote and tiller steer. There is even a Pod Drive model for sailboats. The Cruise has an electric motor located in a pod on the bottom of the pylon. Because it is underwater the motor is quiet and it is cooled by the water. It is a brushless motor, so it has a long working life. Cruise motors can be operated with modern lithium batteries or with conventional AGM or lead-gel cell batteries. The batteries developed specifically for the Cruise, the Power 48-5000 and Power 26-104, offer a comprehensive safety system and are easy to install and activate. 38 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

“It is simple to charge the battery from any power socket. Depending on the model it can be plugged into a flexible solar powered charger and if the boat is large enough you can even recharge it while you are using it,” Martin says. The onboard computer display provides information on the most important performance data. Interestingly when we dropped the speed by 10%, the range increased by 30%. We were surprised by just how far and how long you can go if you start with a fully charged battery. The additional Torq Trac app overlays range information with a map of your current location to show a visual representation of how far you can travel at a given speed based on current battery power. The motor weight without battery is between 17.5 to 63.9kg, depending on the model.

TRAVEL With its lithium battery and outstanding efficiency, the Travel is the environmentally safe alternative to up to 3hp petrol outboard motors for tenders, dinghies and inflatables. There are two Travel options; Travel 503 is 1.5 hp equivalent and suitable for vessels up to 750 kg and the Travel 1003 (Torqeedo’s top-selling model) is 3 hp equivalent and can power vessels up to 1.5 tons. Two shaft lengths are available on both models to suit crafts of different sizes. It is simple to charge the Travel’s built-in battery from any power socket, 12-volt connection or a solar-powered charger. It can be connected to a solar charger while in use and if the battery is running low, the Travel has an audible alarm system that alerts you. In turn, the Travel can charge other electrical devices. The battery has a USB adapter so you can share its power with a mobile phone, laptop or other equipment. Lightweight and easy to handle, the Travel is designed for tool-free mounting, and at only 9.0kg (without battery) can be comfortably carried by hand. The Travel easily dismantles into components, which can be packed into optional travel bags for mess free transportation.

ULTRALIGHT

The Torqeedo Ultralight’s name says it all - a clean, powerful electric outboard that weighs less than 9 kg (with battery) to power kayaks, canoes and other small craft. With the equivalent power of a 1 hp combustion engine, the Ultralight 403 provides both thrust and endurance. It can deliver speeds up to 10 kph or distances up to 40 km at lower speeds. Another advantage of the Ultralight is that its steering, tilting and auto kick up integrates into a kayak’s existing steering system, so the paddler can use it with foot pedals. Ultralight motors come with a charger, remote throttle, onboard computer, and GPS-based range calculator, which estimates the distance that can be travelled with the existing battery charge. They can be recharged with a solar charger, even during use. Also available, but not for the media day is the Torqeedo Deep Blue, available in inboard or outboard configuration with a range of 40-80hp. It will soon be bolstered by an inboard Deep Blue 200hp model. Torqeedo also offers Lithium battery banks including the 48-5000 (48v) and the 26-104 (24v). The big plus for both battery packs is their lightweight when compared to a standard lead-acid battery and their life cycle range. The 26-104 has a total weight of 24kg and the 48-5000 is 36.5 kg. According to Torqeedo, both batteries offer around 3000 life cycles, compared to a lead acid battery of approx 800. Hosting the event was Power Equipment’s New Zealand staff as well as the PE group General Manager Luke Foster and Torqeedo Product Manager Jason Hodder from the company’s head office in Melbourne. www.powerequipment.com.au | www.powerequipment.co.nz

MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT

T

here all types of boaties and many different approaches to the subject of boat care and maintenance. At one extreme plenty of derelictlooking boats can be seen on moorings, apparently never used with growth dangling below their hulls, while at the other extreme owners can be seen at anchor lovingly cleaning their pride and joy all day long while their bored families look on. Boating is about enjoyment – cruising to great anchorages, swimming, diving, fishing, children playing on the beach, BBQs with family and friends etc and as such it's well to consider that care and maintenance should focus more on the technical than the cosmetic aspects. Minor marks and imperfections show that adventures and fun have been had, they add character and are part of a boat's life story. This is not to say that gelcoat and stainless steel shouldn't be cared for and we've learned long ago that always washing accumulated salt off your topsides and stainless steel pays huge dividends. We also get our topsides gelcoat professionally polished annually. It can be challenging to monitor all of the checks and subsequent maintenance required aboard modern vessels with the growing complexity of the equipment they carry, especially as we all tend to focus on the immediate problems needing our attention rather than those in the future, so how can we keep track of the myriad of routine maintenance issues? Our own approach is to be pragmatic and practical but not pedantic and we try to strike a balance between preventative maintenance and “if it ain't broke don't fix it”. Maintenance normally falls into one of three categories – something that you notice needs doing, something based on hours of use or something based on elapsed time, for example many engine manufacturers recommend replacing the oil every 200 hours of operation or annually regardless of hours of use. The simplest way to manage this process is to go through the maintenance sections of your equipment manuals and make one list of what needs to be done at various time intervals, for example daily, weekly, monthly, 3-monthly, annually etc, plus another list showing the equipment to be maintained and its maintenance requirements every 100 hours, 200 hours, 500 hours etc. When organising to do your maintenance consider 40 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

that it's often best to group similar maintenance items together. For example if you're replacing the oil and filters on the engine(s), consider doing the generator at the same time, particularly if you're paying a mechanic to do this. If your oil is supposed to be changed at 200 hours it doesn't really matter if it turns out to be 180 or 220 hours. It's a good idea for any boat to have an Operation Manual. This can range in size from a few pages for a smaller boat to probably around a hundred pages for a larger complex one. Not only does this make the operation of your boat more simple but it's a valuable asset when it's time to sell. This Manual should document where equipment is located particularly for safety-critical items like isolating switches and seacocks, how systems work - for example how to change from one fuel or fresh water tank to another and maintenance procedures - how to change oil, oil filters, fuel filters etc. Another useful document is a list of spare parts carried aboard and their location, so they can be found quickly in an emergency like a vee belt breaking on your main engine while under way. Keep this updated so that used parts are replaced as soon as possible. Parts are expensive and should always be well packaged for their protection and stored in cool, dry conditions. Aboard Envoy we like to keep things simple and rely on a few handwritten documents. Rather than jotting things down on various pieces of paper that get lost we use a Daybook to write down information relating to the boat's operation. For example if we're thinking about replacing an item of equipment and want to do some research about it we note the pertinent facts in the Daybook. We also keep a separate Logbook to record details of the voyage, for example where we've been been, what we've done and people we've met. Another important document for us is our To Do List and my unlikely-to-be-achieved life's ambition is to have nothing on this list (I've yet to meet a boat owner who says there's nothing that needs doing on their boat). Finally to maximize your technical security and independence it’s essential to carry aboard a comprehensive toolkit, manuals for all installed equipment, and an extensive range of chandlery items. Then even if you can't fix something yourself this may enable a fellow boatie to assist you.

Char Grilled Blue Warehou With garlic potato, kumara mash, mushroom and red wine sauce.

The blue warehou or common warehou, is found off southern Australia and around New Zealand, at depths of between 5m and 400m. Its length is up to about 75 cm. The blue warehou is not to be confused with the bluenose warehou (usually referred to simply as bluenose in New Zealand, and bonita, big-eye or Griffin’s silverfish by others) which is a deepwater member of the warehou family. SERVES 4

FISHING

with Bruce Duncan (aka Captain Swish)

Sexing Snapper Looking over the back paddock, it’s not hard to tell the difference between the bulls and the cows but how do you tell the difference between male and female snapper?

F

Checking out a male snapper by holding the fish with thumb and fore finger at the top of the hard bony area above the gills, to minimise the chance of organ damage when released.

Dark scruffy markings under the chin just like most blokes I know. 46 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

or most of the year, it’s just not possible but come to the start of summer when the snapper is about to spawn they form up in schools. Now like us, when we have one thing on our mind, we tend to wander off and our regular pattern of eating goes out the window. Well, snapper is the same. With the water getting warmer, schools of snapper start to move into shallows and when it’s up around 18 deg, they will come to the surface [mostly at night] on mass for fishy fornication. Circling around like a big whirlpool, eggs and milt are released and the fertilisation process begins. Adult snapper typically spawns their eggs in areas of highly productive waters, adjacent to estuaries and harbours. The Hauraki Gulf is an essential area for snapper spawning. Snapper eggs hatch into larvae and then transition through many stages that see them grow from around 2 mm to 12 mm over a period of up to 28 days. Once hatched, snapper [all snapper are born females] remain on the surface living off a tiny sack of food for 54 days then the smart ones become males and they all make their way down to the bottom. Different to what is often said, snapper only spawns once but mother nature is a little tricky and has a way to protect the species. Should in the 54 days there be a storm or a significant drop in water temperature, there is a high chance these young snapper will not survive. Most snapper will release a percentage of their spawn latter when conditions are right and will go through the process again. Sound some blokes I know. Leading up to and during the spawning season male snapper take on quite a distinctive colour change from the bottom of the jaw back to their petrel fins. This can vary from dark to smudgy black and even red markings, whereas the females tend to remain

a more pure white. Over the years I have found the colour distinction to be around 80% accurate, so when I start catching females at this time of year, I will often shift to find males, working on the premise the more girls getting to spawn the better. It would only take a few males such as ourselves to make all the girls happy. Over the Xmas period catching a few snapper can at times be challenging, again a bit like us having had a bit of nautical naughtiness, snapper can laze about in a lethargic manner for a few days. It is only after they have fully spawned do they go on a feeding mission to put on condition and build up their fat reserves in preparation for the oncoming winter. Out in the deeper water, I can often tell when the fish have spawned, the sounder will be showing a heap of fish hard on the bottom yet none of the boats around me are catching anything of legal size. Undersize snapper are like kids and will do anything and everything all of the day and night. Again like some of us no matter if we are hungry or not, if we see or smell a tasty wee snack we can’t help but grab it. Times like this you have to think outside the square and I have found if you do a drift fish using a ledger rig such as terakihi rig with small baited hooks, snapper will snap at a tiny scrap of passing food were as they will not even sniff at a normal size bait. The same applies with using soft baits, the smaller 3” jerk shads will outfish any other soft bait size and best of all are micro jigs, as they also present a tiny shiny movement to attract attention. Now I don’t want to bleat on like an old southern Mississippi preacher banging his fist on the pulpit, but we must think about and be aware of just how many fish we take. Do we really need seven snapper? I know that for a lot of people may only get out on the water once a month but a daily limit is fourteen fillets which go a long way, and you don’t really want to freeze fish especially at this time of the year. Fish is only good for around three months in the freezer and that’s if it is treated correctly and if you are going to freeze fish do it at the start of winter when the snapper have a higher body fat content.

SCALLOP TIME Scallops are also an interesting taste sensation, these crafty little critters can spawn up to four times in one season given the right conditions. It is interesting that the condition of the scallops can be so different from beds to beds at the start of the season. For example, the beds on the Te Kouma side of the Coromandel are very different from the Waiheke ones, just fourteen miles apart. Right from the start till the end of the season I get a random sample of the scallops and leave them on the bait board and wait a few minutes till they open up. You can tell if the roes are milky and not worth eating or bright orange ripe and ready for devouring. As the season end advances, you will notice the white mussel of the scallops appears to get smaller and the roes have a motley appearance. Again if you are going to freeze a few down for winter, do it at the beginning of the season when they are in prime condition. I just love them fresh for a few weeks over Xmas, and never freeze them, as they never taste the same. TIP: When a scallop is left for a few minutes on the boat, they open up for you to see if they are worth taking.

SOUTHERN XP816

The XP816 is the largest of the 2.5m beam Southern range.

Seating layouts are optional.

S

outhern Alloy Boats have been building the XP816 for a few years now and until the 425 XTO came along, the biggest power has been a single Yamaha 350hp outboard. Available in either sterndrive diesel or petrol and single or twin outboard power packages, the XP816 has built up a reputation as a great performing boat that can easily handle plenty of power. So when Yamaha recently released the potent 425 XTO onto the market, Family Boats, dealer for Southern Alloy Boats, couldn’t resist the challenge. Would the 8.1m hardtop handle the awesome power and torque that the 425 XTO generated? After taking it for a run on Auckland Harbour, the answer is you bet it does. In a word, blistering! However, I would have to add the proviso, that while it is more than capable of handling the powerful beast, it doesn’t really need it. With a single Yamaha 300, the XP816 will run to 43 knots and cruise around 23 knots and a 350hp will go to 49 knots and cruise at 25 knots. Standard single engine package is either a

Yamaha 300 or Yamaha 350. From the moment I stepped on the boat and got into the driver’s seat I knew I had something special behind me. The 425 XTO is reasonably quiet, especially for a V8 and the throttle response is instant. Even an only gradual increase of rpm, the XP816 shows a soft, smooth transition onto the plane with very little ‘hump’ to climb over. Push the throttle down, and anyone who is not hanging on will be flat on their backs. Acceleration right through the range is impressive. What else is just as impressive is the digital helm. No hydraulics, no cables, only a single wire from the helm to the outboard. I was able to run from idle to 6000 rpm without my hands on the wheel, and the boat never deviated from its course. Flat out, even in a slightly choppy sea, I was able to take my hands off the wheel and felt confident (although a little apprehensive at first) that the boat would still run straight and true. Unquestionably the best outboard steering I have ever experienced! Usually, I would say that to drive a boat like this fast, you do need to know what you are doing behind the wheel. Not so with the digital steering. It felt safe and comfortable to drive, and as long as I kept an eye on the sea state ahead and was ready on the throttle and trim, it wasn’t an issue. Despite the big prop, there’s no skewing, the boat runs flat and sits well on the water. I liked the fact the twin central pillars are not in line with your vision, so you get an unobstructed view when driving. I got just on 53 knots (61 mph) on the GPS @ 6100 rpm, with fuel consumption that, let’s just say, was plenty. Bringing the throttles back to about 4000 rpm we recorded a cruise speed of 33 knots and fuel consumption of 57 lph/1.7nmpl. Given the standard 300-litre fuel tank that offers a range of 150nm. While the 425 XTO might be a little hungry at the top end, it is miserly in the midrange.

BIG BEAST

The Yamaha 425 XTO is a 5.6-liter V8 powerhead with direct fuel injection, the first mass-production four-stroke marine engine to feature DFI. Yamaha says DFI helps the new XTO outboard deliver 5% to 10 % better cruise-speed fuel economy than the F350, and up to 12% better economy at wide-open throttle while producing more power. Everything about this motor is robust and heavyduty to the point of appearing to be over-engineered. But then this is an outboard that is going to be used on heavy boats, so it needed to be built strong. If you are going to design an engine to push big boats, you need the appropriate blade area, with a new line of three-blade stainless XTO OS props range from 16 “to 17.125” diameter with a 15” to 25” pitch range. On average, the XTO OS props offer 14% more blade area than the Saltwater Series XL props designed for the F350 and 28% more area than the Saltwater Series II props created for the F300 model motor. The lower unit is also all new and especially designed to handle the bigger power and prop size. The XTO alternator is rated at 90 peak amps, with 58 amps net available at idle and 72 amps net at just 1500 rpm. The Yamaha XTO is designed to integrate seamlessly with Helm Master and other boat systems. The electric power steering system is genuinely “drive by wire” and integrated into the engine. What about weight? Well, it isn’t the lightest engine in its class, in fact, it’s one of the heaviest at between 431kg and 453 kg (dry) depending on whether it’s a 25”or 30” shaft length. However what should be pointed out is the quoted weight includes the electric steering system. Compared to a Yamaha 350 it is 100 kg more on the transom, but the XP816 handling isn’t affected by it. It’s a big engine that’s been designed to push big boats, so really the weight isn’t a concern. It also comes with a price tag of $NZ95,000, but that includes the digital helm, that pushed the rig we tested up to $NZ259,000. If the price isn’t an issue for you, I would go for it. It is one impressive engine, fit for purpose.

DAYBOAT OR WEEKENDER

The Southern XP816 is the biggest of the 2.5m wide XP range, with anything bigger built with a 2.9m beam. While the boat I tested was primarily a day boat with overnight concessions, such as a head, sink unit, cooker, fridge/freezer and handheld shower, the full lockup model is pitched as a true weekender. The big difference is the solid aft bulkhead which turns the open helm area into a wheelhouse. Ideal if you are boating in colder weather or like to have that extra comfort a fully enclosed hardtop boat gives. As a weekender, you can completely reconfigure the internal layout to include extra seating and dining facility. The cooker and sink unit is fitted in the cockpit. Forward in either layout is a V shape berth, with an infill, storage under and a plumbed

Clockwise: The business end comes with an extra large livebait tank.

in head on the starboard side. If you need extra accommodation, there is an optional pipe berth available. Side trays are big enough to look after plenty of gear, and there’s an access panel to the back of the helm. In the open version, a sliding bulkhead door lets you lock off the cabin, while in the weekender version the port side bulkhead is left open. Southern Alloy Boats have added a nice touch with the macro suede velour fabric on the cabin sides and ultra-leather seating. Jono Bakker, General Manager for Family Boats says that until recently the lock-up has been the most popular style, although there now seems to be a shift towards the open style, especially in Auckland. Seating in the open boat has two king/queens with forward swivelling pedestals on moulded bin bases. There’s a 68-litre fridge, sink unit and provision for a cooker. The passenger backrest is reversible so you can flip it over if you want to watch what’s happening in the cockpit or if you are towing a water toy. Also, a great place to sit if you are trolling a couple of game lures. There are double trays under the coamings as well as dedicated tackle lockers, plus extra wide side coamings with rod holders. Naturally, there is also the obligatory rocket launcher overhead. Being an alloy boat the cockpit and cabin layout are very much owner driven, and none of the twenty Southern XP816s built since 2014 have been quite the same.

The hardtop is resin infused fibreglass, designed to keep the boat looking a little ‘softer’ and takes out any aggressive lines. Bakker says that they also use fibreglass to keep the weight to a minimum into the upper structure. A boat of this calibre is going to need a seriously smart set of electronics, and our test boat wasn’t lacking. Centre of the grp helm is space for a either a single 16” MFD or a pair of 10” screens. We had a pair of 10” touchscreen Garmin 7410 MFDs, chartplotter/sonar combos. The two screens meant you can look at a mix of displays such as DownVu and chirp SideVu, plus radar, sonar and yes it still has a basic fishfinder function as well. Gone are all the instruments, replaced with a single Yamaha 7” display, which ‘talks’ to the Garmin. This has all the engine management data and even comes with a rudder angle indicator. Helps that the Yamaha unit is manufactured by Garmin. Other accessories include Lenco auto glide tabs, Fusion entertainment system and Maxwell auto winch controls.

BUSINESS END

The XP 816 is really all about fishing, and in our test boat, the transom area reflects that 100%. Centre stage is an extra-large live bait tank with viewing panel, flanked with deep walk-throughs with drop-in washboards, through to the transom platforms. A sizeable removable bait station sits above and the separate battery locker below. A freshwater handheld shower (hot/cold) is nearby as is a saltwater wash down. Jono commented that they can design and build the transom area to just about whatever a client requires and that there have been quite some variations. Standard is a single walk-through with an extended platform. Tuna tubes, platform cages or twin ladders, the choice is yours.

SUMMARY

With the XP816 being a semi-custom model, you can personalise the boat to suit your needs. As for the power, well while the Yamaha 425 XTO is a magnificent engine and the boat certainly has no issues in handling the extra power or weight, I think most owners would be just as happy with a 300-350hp outboard. But then, if you really like getting to your fishing spot off the coast in a hurry then go for it. Overall the Southern XP816 and Yamaha 425 XTO make a great combo.

SEALEGS INTERNATIONAL

Experiencing a growth

Spurt Sealegs have stepped into new territory with their Sealegs Electric E4, released at the recent Auckland On Water Boat Show.

56 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

Sealegs International CEO, David McKee Wright

When asked how he was finding the current market, Sealegs International CEO, David McKee Wright, summed it up in a word….buoyant. “After nearly 15 years of market education we are not having to work as hard to sell the product - people now know Sealegs, they know it works and that it is a credible product”, says McKee Wright.

H

e adds that after an investment of over $NZ17 million in developing the brand, the company is now operating at a profitable level. In the 2016-2017 year, Sealegs International reported around $NZ20 million turnover and in the 2017-2018 year that increased to a record $NZ30 million. This has allowed the company to use those financial resources to expand its R&D areas, such as the recent release of the System 100 Amphibious Enablement System and the Sealegs Electric E4. However, McKee Wright points out that they have made a decision not to produce any boats over 9m themselves and will leave that part of the market to other builders who wish to franchise the use of their Sealeg System. McKee Wright says that in the future, Sealegs International would like to be out of building boats altogether and concentrate on designing and selling amphibious enablement systems (AES). “AES needs to be something that is easy for boat builders to install, so our focus going forward is to make that installation as seamless as possible. Our vision is ‘install in a day and drive away’ and that is something that the new Sealegs Electric E4 is paving the way to achieve”, adds McKee Wright.

SYSTEM 100 FOR THE BIG BOYS One recent example is Kirkby Marine in Australia which has launched the first amphibious eco-tourism vessels incorporating the robust System 100. The first of three new 12.8m amphibious craft has just joined the fleet of award-winning eco-tourism business Pennicott Wilderness Journeys and has been put into service at Victoria’s most significant coastal wilderness area, Wilsons Promontory. Sealegs International worked in collaboration with Naiad Design (NZ) and Western Australian boat builder Kirby Marine to integrate its System 100 Amphibious Enablement System on the three new Naiad Eco-tourers. Designed for large format craft from 9m to 12m with total payloads of up to 7.5 tonnes, System 100 is the largest amphibious enablement system (AES) in production. “The System 100 is a game changer for Sealegs and we see a huge opportunity for it, especially in the military and commercial market”, says McKee Wright.

GOING GREEN ELECTRIC E4 Also breaking new ground is the Sealegs Electric E4, an all-new 7.1m model which combines the latest advances in WWW.BOAT MAGS.C O M 57

lithium battery and brushless electric hub motor technology together with over 15 years of Sealegs proprietary amphibious marinisation techniques, knowledge and experience. Powerful, high-torque hub-mounted brushless electric motors effortlessly move the Sealegs Electric E4 out of the water and up beaches and through difficult terrain. The highdensity 7.5kW lithium battery delivers up to 20 return launch and retrieve journeys on land between charges. Charging is via a built-in mains charger as well as via regenerative braking. Mechanical backup safety brakes have also been integrated into the hub motors. This system replaces the hydraulically powered legs and wheels and a marinised inboard engine. Another benefit is there is no large engine box taking up space on the cockpit, with the battery bank and electronics all in the console unit. David McKee Wright said “The release of the Sealegs Electric E4 reinforces Sealegs global leadership position in amphibious technology. It is the result of our ongoing multimillion-dollar investment in amphibious research and development over many years and numerous developmental prototypes”.

FUTURE MOBILITY SYSTEMS In the past couple of years, Future Mobility Solutions (FMS), the parent company of Sealegs International Limited have been active in adding key marine manufacturers to their portfolio of companies (which includes Sealegs International Ltd) to broaden its focus to the future mobility technology sector. In 2016 they signed an agreement for the acquisition of a controlling 70% interest in S.A.S Sillinger from Groupe Marck for a price of Euro 2.1 million. Sillinger is headquartered in France and manufactures and sells a wide range of crafts under the Sillinger and Rafale brand names worldwide, with a particular focus on France and its overseas territories. Sillinger is a world-leading RIB manufacturer specialising in the military and defence sector In the last quarter of 2017 Future Mobility Solutions, purchased US boat-maker Willard Marine for US$6.85 million. Willard builds military grade rigid inflatable boats and generated annual revenue of US$13.1 million in calendar 2016, with customers including the US Navy, US Army Corps 58 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

of Engineers, LA County Fire Department, and foreign military. The deal is designed to broaden the FMS group’s geographic reach by adding the United States to the group’s strengths in Europe and North and West Africa through Sillinger and in the Asia Pacific through Sealegs. Sillinger will be showing their first Sealegs System RIB at the 2018 Euronaval show, Paris, France on Oct 22-26. While the military sector is currently only accounting for around 5% of Sealegs International business (85% leisure & 10% commercial), McKee Wright says that with the advent of the System 100 and all that could change and he sees a big future in this highly competitive but lucrative market. Also in 2017, the company purchased local Kiwi RIB and tube manufacturer Lancer Industries for $1.5 million in cash and shares as it attempts to become more competitive in the oil barge sector. Lancer has a range of own-branded products mainly used in commercial marine applications, with its oil recovery barge in use in over 70 countries and it is also original equipment (OEM) manufacturer of inflatable fendering solutions, boats and other related products for the high-end retail, superyacht and commercial marine sectors. In making the acquisition, the company believes Lancer enhances and diversifies its existing businesses through Lancer’s expertise and track record in the oil barge industry as well as being an in-house supplier for tubes for Sealegs International.

ABOUT SEALEGS INTERNATIONAL Sealegs International is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Future Mobility Solutions (NZX:FMS) and has been the world’s leading manufacturer of amphibious rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RIBs) for more than 10 years. The business builds and sells its patented technology, including amphibious enablement kits and amphibious craft up to 9m, from its factory in Auckland, New Zealand. It also works with international boat builders to integrate its Amphibious Enablement Systems to third-party designed craft. World leaders in amphibious boat technology, Sealegs has delivered more than 1300 craft to customers in 50 countries since the business began in 2001.

P

ower cats are no longer looked at as just a sailing version without a mast. Designers have perfected just about every aspect of the power cat and they continue to get better and better. One of these is the Leopard 43PC, built in South Africa by Robertson & Caine with exterior design by Simonis Voogd Design. The Léopard 43PC is offered in two layouts, as the three cabin Owner’s version as well as a four cabin charter version, under the name Moorings 433PC, with virtually all other living spaces the same for both. The Leopard 43 didn’t just happen. It evolved from the successful Leopard L51PC when designer Alexander Simonis was asked to produce an L51PC on a ‘diet’. Simonis explains that firstly the smaller vessel needed to work to an even lower running trim than the L51PC and to achieve the upward force generated in the stern the aft sections had to become more significant.

62 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

“This was done by moving the volume distribution further back than on the 51 and making it wider in the aft sections. However, the danger here is that if we became too wide, the wave resistance would go up too much and the result would be a significant drop in speed”, says Simonis. The solution was making the tunnel and transom widths much closer. The amount of area lost in the front exceeds that which is lost at the back while the overall beam hasn’t increased. The 43PC gets close to the speeds the 51, despite being over 2m shorter and having 100 hp less. The keels have been done away with, replaced by small skegs which allow the boat to be beached and stored on the hard. The bows are a very fineentry, the ski-shape forward and the nacelle is high for the size of the boat. The deep U-sections of the forward half of the hulls, which generate a very deadening hull form to counteract pitching, contribute to a well-balanced trim and increase the boat’s capabilities going through a choppy sea. The aft third is hollowed out in the form of a tunnel to allow space for the propeller and improve the angle of the prop shaft, to a very efficient 8°. Another plus is the stepped hull design, which adds interior volume above the waterline, allowing for roomier accommodations in the hulls without sacrificing performance. While I had very calm conditions on Auckland Harbour for the review, the boat was delivered to Auckland from Tauranga in a reasonably feisty sea and the owner is very complimentary about how well it was handling, especially around Cape Colville. “It surprised me and the more the weather cut up, the better the boat seemed to like it. We ran at around 18 knots, a speed that I would never have

even considered in my previous 47ft flybridge cruiser. Very impressive!”, says the owner. I found the 43PC to be incredibly stable and even when we did experience a ferry wake the twin hulls ride across like on rails. In a full speed tight turn, the boat sits level and runs a reasonably tight radius without dropping any speed and with no heel. Certainly a very easy and pleasant boat to drive.

SLIPPERY ON THE WATER

The 43PC is 13m overall with a maximum beam of 6.72m, with a displacement of 13891 kg. Standard power is a pair of 320hp Yanmar 8LV320s, which give a maximum speed of 24.5 knots (light displacement) and cruise of 18 knots. With narrower hulls and less wetted surface below the waterline, the Leopard 43PC maintains exceptional fuel efficiency. There’s no doubt this is a slippery boat through the water with a maximum range @ 6.5 knots of around 1400nm. That’s enough to cross the Tasman or get to Fiji, with the latter being somewhere the owner intends to cruise to in the future. The 43PC carries 1000 litres of fuel and 780 litres of water.

CAT FAN

I have always been a power cat fan, ever since I started racing offshore power cats, that took driver Glen Urquhart and me to a world championship win. When power cats or tunnel hulls as they were known, arrived on the offshore racing scene, they changed it overnight. They signalled an almost immediate demise of the monohull. However, when it came to recreational boating, the power cat was a lot slower to emerge as a serious alternative to the conventional monohull. Cats were for sailing and the move into power has been a gradual transition, although in the past few years that has gained momentum. Now when you go to a boat show,

power cats are everywhere, both from local custom designers to stock boats from as wide as Europe, Taiwan, Australia and South Africa. It was at the recent Auckland On Water Boat Show that I came across the Leopard 43PC, the first one imported into New Zealand. Australia embraced the power cat a lot earlier than Kiwis, with six Leopard 43PCs sold.

FIRST IMPRESSION

The first impression is one of space, as you would expect in any power cat, but the Leopard seems to have a little more. From the cockpit through to the forward screen and through onto the foredeck, the boat has that incredible feeling of volume. High profile windows all round, soft tone fabrics and light coloured Alabaster Oak laminated timber panelling accentuate the openness and generate a spacious feel. This also flows right through to the accommodation areas in the hulls, where long side windows and

BOAT REVIEW

LEOPARD 43PC high ceilings contribute to the airy and cosy atmosphere. With either three or four cabins, the 43PC is a perfect catamaran for family cruising. There are two steering stations, a secondary position in the saloon, with the main driving area on the open flybridge. The facia is large enough for a couple of MFDs, although our boat was fitted with only one 12” screen and flanked by all the rest of the controls, switches and displays necessary to run the boat. Soon to be added were a full set of clears around the bridge, which will turn this into much more usable space in the colder climes. It’s a great entertainment space with a U shaped settee with fixed table and optional bbq/wet bar area to port. A

unique feature of the 43PC is the twin sun pad areas, one ahead of the helm on the saloon roof and the other on the upper deck area aft. An open tread staircase connects the flybridge to the cockpit where again the focus is on having a great time relaxing in an elegant environment, where plenty of seating forms the basis of the layout. There’s a massive U shape port side settee with fixed dining table, plus a sun lounger to starboard aft of the flybridge staircase. When you slide open the aft bulkhead windows, the saloon and cockpit morph into one. Add some full clears around the outside and you have a massive ‘inside’ space. There is easy access to the extra wide side decks and also the generous boarding platforms. The owner has plans to extend the platform between the hulls to maximise the space available.

The saloon, like all areas in the boat, is roomy, functional and extremely well designed, making maximum use of every available space. The galley is forward facing with a gas oven and hob, with maximum provision for storage, such as coffee machine, Corian surfaces, plus fridge/freezer combo drawers aft. Opposite is an L shaped settee with drop down table that converts to become another double berth. Again Leopard has thought of how best to use all the space and via a door in the predominately solid perspex forward bulkhead, provide convenient access through to another sun lounging deck. There’s also a very neat access panel covering the internal anchor system, which means no anchoring rode or chain over the deck. Deep storage lockers fill the remaining spaces above the wing deck. The second helm station, situated forward on the port side of the saloon, has an optional autopilot and engine controls, so if you want to drive from inside, this small, yet handy station lets you do so. Something I would certainly tick in the options list.

3 OR 4 CABINS

The thing that makes the Leopard 43 such a great charter boat is it’s four cabins, two bathroom option, which is what you will find in the Moorings 433PC. Our boat had the Owner’s Version, with the threecabin layout which sees the entire starboard hull dedicated as the master stateroom. There’s a sliding companionway door that shuts off the space and offers complete privacy. Forward is the head and walkin shower area and aft the full beam (well width of the hull) berth. Separating the two is a changing area, with vanity, hanging lockers and storage. The port side hull has a similar aft double berth arrangement but utilises the central area for the bathroom, hanging lockers. The third cabin is situated forward and is large enough for a double berth.

LAST WORD

I left the owner to have the last word, “The Leopard 43PC ticked all the boxes for us, and it is an ideal boat for our family and us, with plenty of space, stability, amazing handling and all within our budget. We are more than pleased with it and look forward to spending this summer cruising the Hauraki Gulf and the Bay of Islands. For brightness and ventilation, there is nothing like it”.

Let’s go TOPLESS

SPORTS YACHT, SPORTS CRUISER OR SEDAN CRUISER, THEY COME BY A VARIETY OF NAMES, BUT ESSENTIALLY THEY ARE A FLYBRIDGE BOAT WITHOUT THE FLYBRIDGE. FLUSH TOP DESIGNS WITH SLIDING SUNROOFS OR SOMETIMES WITH A SUNDECK, THEY ARE AN EVER EXPANDING SECTOR OF THE BIG BOAT MARKET. THEY ARE NOT RESTRICTED BY SIZE AND ARE AVAILABLE FROM 9M THROUGH TO 40M. WE HAVE A LOOK AT WHAT’S ON OFFER AT THE TOP END AND SUGGEST THINGS TO LOOK FOR IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING PURCHASING ONE.

Sedan Cruisers 60-90ft

A

FRIEND OF MINE, TOLD ME YEARS AGO, THAT A LAUNCH WITHOUT A FLYBRIDGE WAS LIKE BUYING A CAR WITHOUT WHEELS. YOU CAN’T HAVE ONE WITHOUT OTHER. WHILE I NEVER AGREED WITH HIM AND HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A CHAMPION OF THE SEDAN OR NON-FLYBRIDGE BOATS, PRODUCTION SEDANS BACK THEN WERE INDEED IN THE MINORITY. HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED...

I

T wasn’t so many years ago that if you wanted a launch/cruiser without a flybridge, you virtually had to get something custom designed and built. While that option is still available and very active, especially in New Zealand with designers such as Bill Upfold (Elite Marine Design) and Scott Robson (Robson Design), there are now plenty of production sports sedan style boats on offer from some of the world’s most recognised brands. PPB has run many features and reviews on this style of boat in the past so we thought we would refine our search this time to one of the most popular size ranges, 17m to 25m. We have identified sixteen production builders that collectively offer over 30 models from the 17.46m, Riviera 5400 Sports Yacht to the 23.50m Whitehaven 7500 Sports Yacht. Plus we have added some custom options should you want to be a little different from everyone else in the marina. New Zealand based Maritimo Sales Consultant Aliaster Hool, says that there has been a real surge in recent years in sedans and sports yachts and a solid uptake on the recently released Maritimo X60. “We have already delivered the first two to local clients and have interest in more. These follow a number of S59s and an S70 sold last year and right now it’s about 50/50 on enquires for flybridge or sedan cruisers”, says Hool. Maritimo Marketing Manager and lead designer, Tom Barry-Cotter said 2018 has seen strong sales across the range. “Certainly the international premiere and subsequent promotion of the X-Series models has added another layer to our range, which has resulted in very positive sales results,” he said. Barry-Cotter added that the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in May 2018 generated the most substantial sales value from any boat show in company history. He said the bulk of

the company’s sales are coming from Australia, New Zealand and North America. “We have seen sales increase 10% this year from the past year and we expect an even larger increase next year with the introduction of X-Series (X60 and X50) into North America, Europe and Asia.” Riviera has been building sports yachts for a long time, with the biggest being the extremely popular 6000 Sports Yacht. Liam Power, from R Marine Flagship, Auckland says that currently, over 60% of new boat sales are for either Sport Motor yachts or the SUV sedans. “We are seeing a lot of new people to boating and the sedan style has a lot of appeal, with the 5400 and the 6000 amongst our best selling models”, says Power. He added that with the advent of stern based engines, i.e. Volvo Penta IPS, there is now a lot more accommodation available and one of the other benefits is being able to provide sufficient cabin headroom, the saloon floors have been raised and accordingly the height of the helm. “The elevation of the saloon, dining, helm and galley is so much better than it used to be, and while you’re not up as high as a flybridge, you still have great visibility all round”.

So What’s The Difference?

As already mentioned there are different accepted design descriptions; Sports Yacht, Sports Cruiser and Sports Sedan. So what’s the difference? A Sports Yacht conjures up a sleek, sexy, go fast style that has the performance and handling to match its sporty looks. That means it should be agile and active when driven fast and by fast, it should do better than 25 knots and probably 30 knots is the magic figure.

68 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

However, it also needs to be able to cruise at a reasonably high pace. These boats are about getting there and back in a hurry! If it’s all about speed then the Italian marque Pershing has bragging rights with their P62 and P70 both 46-knot boats. Sports Yachts are modern, with design lines and style that often break with convention, yet still, offer the internal attributes of a wholesome cruising boat. Australian manufacturers, Whitehaven, Riviera and Maritimo all have a range of Sports Yachts, as does brands such as Pershing and Azimut from Italy, Sunseeker, Fairline and Princess from the UK and Cruiser and Galeon from the US. The Sports Cruiser or Sports Sedan are really one in the same and present a more traditional style. However, while their external appearance may give the impression of being a sedate cruiser, don’t be fooled, most are pocket rockets. One of the most successful exponents of this is Palm Beach, with their PB55 capable of 42 knots. Whether it’s a Sports Yacht, Sports Cruiser or Sedan, they generally feature one level living with accommodation forward. Dedicated cabins are another necessity and depending on the size of the boat that would usually be anything form 2-4, with 2-3 bathrooms. It is essential that the saloon is well set out and there is enough space dedicated to the galley, dinette, helm and lounge areas. Bigger the boat the more prominent the saloon and in most cases this also applies to the accommodation spaces. No matter what boat or style you are considering you need to make sure that the layout and design suit your requirements. Some may be more suited to entertaining, while others are more about cruising comforts. Are you more interested in speed and want to go everywhere in a hurry

Italian Flair AZIMUT

There are three models in the Azimut S Collection, with the S7 and the S77 both offering open sunbridge layouts, with the new S6 the only full sedan. The S Collection blends a sporty look with elegance thanks to innovative high-tech solutions and high-performance materials with liberal use of carbon fibre. The stylistic high point of the collection is the dynamic bow cap and also that all three are powered by triple Volvo Penta IPS.

and don’t mind the horrendous cost of diesel, or are you more into the creature comforts and having all the luxuries when you are moored up for the night? These boats are a balance between a cruising boat layout wrapped up in a performance hull. It’s neither one or the other, but while being a compromise, if it’s designed right it features the best of both mediums. One area that is also important to consider is the cockpit. This is your only outside area as opposed to an open flybridge which gives you all that extra space up above. Even with an enclosed flybridge you usually have

a small Juliet deck aft and obviously more internal living space. With some of the production boat builders, the cockpit, saloon and accommodation spaces are not much different to what they offer in a flybridge model based on the same hull. The staircase to the bridge is obviously gone and an internal helm has to be added (some already have this), but when it comes to the cabin’s forward they often remain unchanged. Overall, the issues of usability don’t really change that much between a flybridge and a sports sedan, it’s just you have a little less space to do it all. You can still fish, dive, cruise, overnight

and entertain. Designer Bill Upfold says that one point worthy of note from a design aspect is the low centre of gravity in this style of boat, without all that weight aloft they are a much more stable platform. “They are generally far more aesthetically appealing as well, not having the bulk of an enclosed bridge. I normally increase the relative height between waterline and saloon top on a sedan over a fly-bridge, adding to the internal volume simply because you can get away with it, a classic example would be the first “Highlander”, says Upfold.

GRADY-WHITE ADVENTURE 208

NUMB The 208 combines rough water capability with an almost jetboat-like ability to turn tightly.

74 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

Text by Mike Rose

BY THE

BERS Successful boatbuilding is all about getting the numbers right and Grady-White has theirs nailed. With the Adventure 208, their 60-year heritage shines through.

T

he pride of North Carolina boatbuilding, Grady-White, was founded in 1959 and has been owned by the same family for the last 50 years. 40 years ago, it pioneered the Walk Around Cabin. Today, it offers 27 models across five distinct ranges, four of which are Walk Around Cabins. When J. D. Power and Associates conducted their first Marine Industry Customer Satisfaction Survey in 2001, Grady-White was ranked 1st in its category (coastal fishing boats). The surveys were conducted for the next 8 years and Grady White finished top in every single one, earning an incredible 9+ out of 10 in every category including performance, fit and finish, comfort, ride, factory support and dealer service. When the US’s National Marine Manufacturers Association began their independent Customer Satisfaction Index studies in 2001, Grady-White was again 1st in their category (fibreglass boats). They recently received their 16th consecutive CSI Award.

NO LIGHTWEIGHT

The Adventure 208 is the smallest of Grady-White’s Walk Around Cabin designs, although at 6.8m, with a trailerable weight of 1815kgs and a Yamaha 200hp four-stroke on its transom, it is certainly no lightweight. And that’s not a bad thing. Those who choose fibreglass over aluminium for their fishing platforms do so largely for one or both of these reasons: they prefer the more polished, warmer WWW.BOAT MAGS.C O M 75

appearance or they like the more solid feel, especially when battling large seas offshore. Although some might think a sub-7m vessel is a little small to be heading offshore, it is what the Adventure 208 (and of course its three large stable mates) were designed to do. This is thanks largely to GradyWhite’s renowned SeaV2 Progression hull. Starting at a moderate 18 degrees at the stern, it develops into around 30 degrees amidships and culminates in 50plus degrees at the bow. Combined with a clearly defined chine, a brace of strakes and that 1800kgs, the Adventure 208 not only copes with rough offshore seas, it does so comfortably. As those who have had the opportunity to ride in a Grady-White (or read previous reviews of the marque) will appreciate, the 208 combines that rough water capability with an almost jetboat-like ability to turn tightly, power out of the turns and quickly get up to speed. With a top speed of 33.8 knots, it is definitely no slouch. Able to cover the ground at 25.3 knots at 28 l/hr means there is a surprisingly economical sweet spot for cruising, too.

76 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

GONE FISHING

Cabin Walkarounds were designed to maximise fishing space while providing shelter from the elements, along with a modicum of comfort for those wanting a spot to relax or overnight. Being a Grady-White, there is also plenty to attract the serious angler. For example, to allow them to really lean into the fight, all of the gunwales are fitted with thick padded thigh-high bolsters while recessed toe kicks allow the feet to get just that little bit further outboard for maximum leverage. There is a 94.6-litre plumbed live bait tank under the forward port cockpit seat and a 100.3-litre insulated fish bin under the matching seat to starboard. Additional stowage bins live under both rear seats. There is stowage for three rods in each of the side lockers as well as three more in each of the coamings and a further six in the rocket launcher. A removable bait board slots into the starboard side of the transom and there is a pair of tackle

Clockwise: A lockable cabin is standard. There are deep stowage bins under both rear seats. Deep sidewalks make access to the bow safe and easy. lockers under the main crew seat. Because Grady-White has long been helmed by people who are also passionate fishers, the company recognises that catching dinner can be both messy and, especially on a hot day, thirsty work. To cope with the former, they have installed a coiled wash down hose in the port side locker. To alleviate the latter they have installed stainless steel drink holders virtually everywhere. They are in the side decks, close by both the aft and forward cockpit seats and handily positioned for the driver and main crew. There are even a couple on the bow for those lounging on the foredeck. All, along with the rest of the Grady-White hardware, is 316 marine grade stainless steel. To reach the Yamaha outboard and the two aft quarter platforms there is a clever fold-down step that also gives access to another smart piece of innovation: a hose fitting that connects directly to the outboard so there is no need for any unsightly “ear muffs”.

UNDER THE HARDTOP

The area under the 208’s optional hardtop more closely resembles that of a traditional cabin boat rather than that of a walkaround, especially when it is enclosed, as it is in this case, with curtain clears. Not only does the area feel surprisingly spacious, it also features one of those lockable louvered panel bi-fold doors, complete with capping hatch. The twin seats are comfortable affairs with adjustable footrests and plenty of handy space nearby to stow things such as keys, cellphones, sunglasses and the like. The Yamaha DEC gauges sit high on the dash, along with the Lewmar windlass controls, inset into their own carbon-like black panel. Below, behind a lockable Perspex cover, is the Garmin MFD. The Bennett trim tab toggle and the Ritchie compass are adjacent to the stainless steel tilt steering wheel while the DC gauges, again on an attractive black backing panel, are positioned, in order of importance, on the driver’s right side. The Garmin

VHF and the Fusion sound system live in their own locker high up, underneath the hardtop. The cabin, a comfortable spot to overnight of handy place to grab 40 winks when the fishing is slow, is easily big enough for two. It comes with both a traditional infill and a pull out centre squab, under which lives a portable toilet. There is also ceiling-hung stowage for the really prized rods and reels, attractive black upstands creating the side lockers and net stowage in the forepeak.

BOW LOUNGING

Although the clear purpose of the 208 is to catch fish, its designers are clearly wise enough to realise that some are more interested in other pursuits. Like lounging around on the bow on a nice sunny day. They therefore offer a set of bow cushions specifically designed for this purpose. another fishing platform or as comfortable place to relax away from the more vigorous activity further aft. Further improving the utilisation of this space is the optional extended bowsprit, which gets the anchor and all of the associated hardware safely out of the way.

SUMMARY

A company that gets the numbers right and wins as many boat building and customer satisfaction awards as Grady-White is obviously doing something special. Although one of the smaller boats in its fleet, the Adventure 208 undoubtedly boasts the same high standard of finish, fit-out and attention to detail as its much larger siblings. For those after a GRP fishing boat, who want to be able to comfortably cruise well offshore at a reasonable clip, fish hard while they are there and not have to worry too much about getting safely home if the wind suddenly gets up, it seems the numbers certainly stack up.

The first decision is fixed or handheld. Both do the same job but some do it better than others. Secondly, just how much do you want to spend? With so many makes and models to choose from it is easy to base the decision on dollar values rather than performance values. You also need to look at what functions and features the VHF unit you are considering has. If it’s a handheld, does it float? If it’s fixed does it have secondary station options? Is it AIS and GPS compatible. Also a fixed VHF radio is only as good as the aerial attached to it. In the case of handhelds, you have little choice, although most can now be linked up to fixed aerials as well to enhance their power.

VHF

(Very High Frequency) radios provide two-way communication and have a range of 5 to 30 nautical miles. They are, arguably, the most important safety item onboard your boat, and are far more reliable than a cell phone, with its limited on-water range and dropped calls. In coastal or inland waters, a VHF radio is generally the fastest link to rescuing agencies like the Coast Guard, a towing service or the harbourmaster. Other uses include conversing with other boaties, listening to weather information and alerts. Handhelds are limited to a transmit power of six watts, compared to 25 watts for fixed-mount radios. Remember, VHF range is more dependent on antenna height and antenna gain than on transmit power, so you can add significantly to your range by connecting an external antenna or by transmitting from the highest location available. For normal handheld use (at five-watt transmit power), figure on a 3-8 mile range from a small boat. The batteries in handhelds vary in capacity from about 500mAh to 2000mAh, and the current draw on high-power transmit can be in the two-amp range. This quickly depletes a battery if there is lots of conversation. Unlike Single Sideband (SSB) or shortwave radios, VHF radios transmit and receive line of sight signals. Mountains, land masses, the curvature of the earth or anything else that blocks vision in a straight line will also block VHF signals (although they do have the ability to “bend” around objects in a limited way).

VHF radios only listen to the strongest signal they receive. If several people are transmitting simultaneously on the same frequency, you will only hear the one with the strongest signal, which will “step on” the other weaker transmissions.

Cobra has five fixed models and four handhelds.

Battery power

The GME GX850 is floatable and flashable.

Maximum Power Fixed-mount radios are legally limited to 25 watts of transmit power. All have the option of transmitting at one watt of power so that short-range conversations are less likely to interfere with large numbers of boaters. It’s a good idea to try to reach your party on one watt before switching to 25 watts. All VHF radios have the same 55 channels with International menus and you can listen to any of them, but most are reserved for government, commercial shipping or Coast Guard use. You can transmit on about 12-15 channels. Your antenna installation is the most important variable affecting the operating range of your VHF. Mount your antenna as high as possible and use an antenna with 6 or 9dB gain. Use large-diameter, low-loss coax cable with properly installed connectors and run it as directly as possible to the radio.

82 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

Fixed VHF radios receive power from your boat’s battery bank, so your operating time is essentially unlimited, because they draw about half an amp while receiving, and about five amps while transmitting at maximum 25 watt power. The only problem is that, if your battery system goes dead, so does your VHF radio. A handheld VHF is thus an important backup in an emergency. A hand held VHF will operate for a range of between 7 ½ and 20 hours. Battery life depends on the radio’s physical size, which determines just how big of a battery it will hold, whether it transmits at 5 or 6 watts on the high power setting, and if the battery pack also powers a GPS receiver. In general, floating VHFs have shorter battery life than heavier, nonbuoyant models. What matters most is the answer to this question; will the radio operate all weekend without a recharge?

Digital Selective Calling (DSC) All fixed VHF radios include Digital Selective Calling capability, which is part of the international protocol of safety procedures in the Global

Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS). DSC provides handy nonemergency functions, allowing you to communicate individually with another boat or group of boats. You can privately send and receive positions (referred to as Position Request or Position Polling) with your buddy boats to rendezvous at that secret location where the fish are biting, for example. What’s more important are DSC’s emergency capabilities—functioning like a sort of coastal EPIRB. In an emergency, one push of a button makes your radio send an automated digital MAYDAY message on VHF Channel 70, which can be received by all other vessels within radio range and the Coast Guard. It transmits your vessel ID number, called an MMSI Number, as well as your position and the nature of your distress call (undesignated, fire, flooding, collision, grounding, capsize, sinking, adrift, abandoning, piracy, MOB). The radio then automatically switches to Channel 16 for voice communication after this information has been sent, allowing you to communicate by voice with would-be rescuers. All DSC radios sold in March 2011

or later (Class D radios) have a separate “watch standing” receiver that constantly monitors DSC Hailing Channel 70. The radio’s other receiving channel is free to listen to any other channel. Radios built to these standards also include additional features including added memory to store other vessels’ MMSI numbers. Older radios may only have one receiver (so you could possibly miss an emergency call while listening on a different channel) or may not have DSC at all. In addition, the DSC function is also useful when used in conjunction with a personal Man Overboard device, which has two modes when using DSC, the first alerts the vessel via DSC to the vessel in which person has gone overboard from, noting the best chance of rescue is from your own vessel. The second mode is when rescue from your own vessel is not likely, then a “DSC All Ships Distress Alert” can be activated by the user, meaning all vessels within listening ranging are alerted, providing the lat long of the person in the water.

Garmin 200 is one of four fixed models, which includes the 300 with AIS.

VHF Radio Size and shape Typical fixed compact units measure about 6” wide x 3” tall x 5-6” deep and are designed to fit in the or around the helm. Standard Horizon makes two of the smallest. The cases on the GX1700 and GX1600 are only about 3 1/2” deep, so they’re a good choice for a small boat. Black box designs like ICOM’s M400BB and Raymarine’s RAY90, Garmin’s VHF 300 are another space-saving alternative, with a modular design that positions the guts of the radio in a remote, sheltered location, with only a small handset and speaker panel taking up your valuable space on a crowded instrument panel. A key advantage of a handheld is they are small and can be place just about

anywhere. The portability means you can communicate while you are away from the primary helm and you can link to the mother ship from your dinghy and let you summon assistance when the outboard fails to start. Another advantage of being portable and ‘of no fixed abode’ is if your electrical system fails and your fixed VHF is powerless, then the handheld with its own separate antenna and battery pack will still be fully functional. If your handheld radio goes overboard, a floating handheld gives you another chance to avoid a big disappointment

Icom is one of biggest suppliers to the VHF market with seven handhelds and four fixed units. and a trip to the store for a new radio. Although floating radios are a relatively recent idea, most of the handheld radios today now float. Note that there seems to be a trade-off between lightweight, floating radios, and radios with big batteries and the longest battery life, so you have to choose which feature, long runtime or a floating radio, you prefer. Some handhelds also include a “Float ’n Flash” feature. These radios float face-up, and the screen, buttons and several LED lights on the base all flash on and off.

The Lowrance Link-5 marine VHF system is compact and affordable with an ultra-rugged waterproof chassis.

GPS or AIS combos Several radios include a built-in GPS receiver, which you can use for navigation, providing your Lat/Lon position and allowing you to navigate to stored waypoints. These VHF/ GPS combos include Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which functions as a sort of VHF-frequency emergency beacon. Just push and hold down the red DISTRESS button, and it sends an

automated digital distress message to the Coast Guard and all other DSC radio-equipped vessels. Rescuers instantly know who you are, where you are (using GPS coordinates), the name of your boat and the phone numbers of your emergency contacts. DSC also provides non-emergency capabilities, allowing you to communicate individually with another boat or group of boats using MMSI numbers. You can send and receive each other’s positions as well, if your radio and the other vessel’s radio are interfaced to GPS.

The Uniden Solara comes equipped with a rugged front microphone and is packed with features including full DSC capability.

Scanning Functions Virtually all radios now have several scanning options, so this has ceased to be a reason to buy one radio over another. There are variations on this theme, however, and you should become familiar with the terminology. Dual Watch or TriWatch allows you to monitor a working channel, like VHF Channel 72, and then pop back to VHF Channel 16 to check for traffic every two seconds or so. This is related to the requirement that mariners maintain a watch on Channel 16 so they can go to the aid of someone broadcasting a Mayday, as well as to listen for their vessel being hailed by another boater. TriWatch adds VHF Channel 9 to the scan list, which can be a hassle in areas where VHF Channel 9 is used for fishing chatter. In any case, virtually all radios have Dual and/or TriWatch. Tag Scan allows you to select any number or combination of channels to monitor. Most radios also offer this feature.

The Simrad RS35 VHF and AIS receiver is available with a wireless handset option.

84 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

Measuring VHF receiver performance Lots of boats are on the water and in some areas boaters have difficulty finding a clear frequency, with interference from signals on adjacent channels making it hard to hear messages. Some radios offer better performance in filtering out RF signals, referred to as intermodal rejection, or how well the radio hears only what it is supposed to hear. Generally, modern VHF radios have increasingly sensitive receivers. The Raymarine Ray91 modular VHF radio brings dual-station communications and traffic management to a whole new level.

Another problem happens when boaties near you can pick up distant signals, but you can’t. Assuming that your antenna, cable and coax connectors are in good working order (and with corrosion in a salt-water environment, this is a big assumption), you may have a problem with the sensitivity of your receiver, how well the radio hears or how strong the signal must be to be heard. Sensitivity is measured in microvolts (µV@ 12dB SINAD), and smaller numbers are superior. Remember that the type and quality of your antenna and its height above the water are the most important factors in receiver performance. Antenna adapters for your VHF are available to connect your handheld to the ship’s antenna. This extends the range of the handheld dramatically, and is an important safety feature should your fixed radio fail. The type of adapter varies with the brand of radio: most use a BNC connector, while others use a special connector. All provide male PL-259 threads for connection to the antenna coax cable.

Uniden offers a range of waterproof and function packed handhelds.

The smarter way to Easy Boating Pioneering joystick control

HOW TO USE A VHF Courtesy of Maritime NZ

With a VHF radio, calls can be received by Maritime NZ, the Coastguard and by vessels which may be in position to give immediate assistance. A VHF marine radio also helps ensure that storm warnings and other urgent marine information broadcasts are received. There is good VHF radio coverage in the coastal waters of New Zealand. Off coastal water, a VHF radio should be your first communication in an emergency. With a few exceptions, even a portable VHF radio can give you up to 50kms of coverage. Even better, on channel 16, a trained operator will take your emergency call within a minute and begin co-ordinating your rescue. Channel 16 is known as the distress channel. Be aware though that a VHF has a range limit and is subject to shadows in difficult terrains like Fiordland. Follow these four simple steps to make sure that your VHF radio is ready in an emergency.

• Get the right VHF radio for you The best advice is for skippers to always have a handheld, waterproof VHF radio on their person, preferably attached to their life jacket. A fixed VHF radio has a greater range and is better for regular communication, but you will not be able to access it if it’s water damaged in a capsize. Carry both a handheld and a fitted VHF radio on your vessel.

• Take a course Knowing how to use a marine VHF radio correctly and with confidence is vital in the event of an emergency. To operate a maritime VHF radio you are required to hold a VHF radio opertor Certificate, unless you are transmitting in an emergency or in distress. Courses are only a few hours long and give you the confidence of knowing how to use a VHF radio in an emergency. Online courses only cost $85 and are available at CoastGuard Boating Education.

VHF radios have excellent coverage in most coastal regions. Many inland waterways are less reliable. Before going boating ask a local boatie or Coastguard, they will know where there is no or little VHF coverage. Also check the VHF coverage map. If the area you’re boating in doesn’t have good coverage, make sure you have an EPIRB (a distress beacon for boats), or a waterproof PLB (personal locator beacon) and a cellphone. In fact, it’s always a good idea to have a beacon anyway.

USING YOUR VHF Other than being in standby, Channel 16 is for hailing and distress purposes only, which in some areas, seems to be a long-forgotten rule! So make your initial hailing call clear and short! The correct hailing procedure is to state one to three times in succession the name of the boat or station you are calling, followed once or twice by the name of your boat, then “Over.” Any additional words are unnecessary and incorrect procedure. Once your party replies, you instruct him/her to switch to a working channel and clear out of channel 16.

PALM BEACH 65 SEDAN

Jewel in the crown

90 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

By Mark Rothfield

THE PALM BEACH 65 IS EXQUISITE PROOF THAT THE ART OF THE ARTISAN IS ALIVE AND WELL IN BOATBUILDING.

It may have the countenance of supercool Bentley, yet the 65 performs more like a Bugatti supercar.

BOAT REVIEW

PALM BEACH 65 SEDAN

This page clockwise: At 36 knots the PB65 consumes distance with deceptive ease. The owner loves to entertain and the cockpit layout reflects that perfectly. On saloon level is a C-shaped lounge and helm station to starboard.

T

here’s something exquisitely special about a product that was crafted by artisans for perfection, not profit. Its quality will resonate long after the purchase price is forgotten, whereas when money is the object, it becomes a race to be cheapest. While pondering this point after testing the new Palm Beach 65 Sedan motoryacht, I happened upon an advertisement for a V8-powered Jaguar that was for sale because the “nanny state fun police” wouldn’t let the provisionally licensed son drive it. “The mighty Shaguar has to go!” the classified cried. “They’re the best car ever built, bar none  … If you park a Ferrari next to this Jag, people will say ‘what’s that thing next to the Jag?’” Continuing: “It drives as smooth as a gravy sandwich, on white bread with real butter, and it has a sunroof so you can look straight up at heaven and say, ‘thank you God for this Jag!’ He’d appreciate that. He has the exact same car  …” The first to see it bought it, apparently. And, in many ways, you could say the same about

92 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

the Palm Beach 65, though its motoring soulmate is more likely a Bentley. God would almost certainly drive one to Church Point on Sundays  … only His would be white. It’s not merely a boat, the builder says, it’s an heirloom. And I’d have to agree. I can’t recall ever seeing joinery so perfect, right down to the wooden steering wheel that represents many hours of skilled and painstaking toil. Even the oft-overlooked engine room is a place where art and function come together as one. Embodying this philosophy, the test boat boasted a uniquely ornate addition  – a diamond-encrusted gold propeller broach, mounted proudly on the teak table, with a blue Argyle diamond as the centrepiece. The vessel’s energy and essence, rarity and clarity, was manifested deep within the oceanic hues of this pure and precise stone. The owner, a jeweller, continued the theme by specifying a bevelled angle for the timberwork rather than rounded edging. Palm Beach remains small enough to accommodate such requests, with build time generally running to around 12 months.

Top to bottom: The test boat had the optional downgalley layout. A VIP cabin with double berth and day head access fills the vee. Size-wise, there are 21m cruisers with more quantity  – though none with more quality.

Grand Plans

The company itself was acquired by Grand Banks in 2014, taking founder Mark Richards with it as CEO. It presented a huge opportunity for the boutique builder to capitalise on the parent’s tacit knowledge of large-scale production. It currently employs 700 staff across factories in Berkeley Vale, NSW, Singapore and Malaysia, where the test boat was built. At one point, Richards halted the entire operation and hit the reset button. As part of that seismic shift, Palm Beach no longer uses brokers  – factoryemployed staff represent the brand at international shows, lavishing the same attention-to-detail to sales and service as shown in construction. By adding sophisticated robotics, like an 8-axis CNC router, they’ve gained more flexibility and affordability when developing tooling, yet many of the production processes still rely on hand crafting. With the PB65, the hull is an E-glass laminate, vacuum-infused with vinylester resin over Corecell M100/80 structural foam, while the deck and

everything above the shearline is fully infused carbon fibre. The hull/deck join is seamless for sleekness. Throughout the hull, there’s a considerable amount of carbon fibre added for structural strength and rigidity, and the bulkheads and fixed furniture are fully bonded to form a semi-monocoque structure. The result is a far lighter structure that uses less material, yet is considerably stronger and considerably dearer. What’s more, it saves weight aloft, which in turn allows for a more easily driven hull shape without compromise to stability. Naval architect Andy Dovell penned the hull in collaboration with Richards, and their yachting pedigree shines through. A warped-vee, semidisplacement form, it begins with a fine entry to pierce through waves, then flattens to just 8-degrees aft to promote lift and form stability. Soft shoulders roll the water away without pounding, while a small chine forward deflects the bow wave. Prop tunnels and a keel are dispensed with, as Richards and Co are sticklers for streamlining. While Palm Beach isn’t wedded to a single engine brand, Volvo is the preferred partner. Standard power is twin 1000hp Volvo D13s running shafts  – however, the test boat sported IPS 1200s at the owner’s behest. There’s no difference in engine location as a jackshaft transmission is employed with the shaft version. Interestingly, the owner had opted for a Side-Power bowthruster as well as the IPS.

Fast Class

It may have the countenance of super-cool Bentley, yet the 65 performs more like a Bugatti supercar. Think of it as a 36-knot apartment, one that consumes distance with deceptive ease. Zipwake tabbing, comprising 30mm interceptor blades, gives fully automated control of lateral and longitudinal trim, although it can also be manually adjusted by dialling two wheels. Having a fullbeam fuel tank amidships helps maintain balance at varying loads. There’s no planing transition, just easy acceleration, and both the ride softness and racking ability are excellent. A remarkably flat wake shows just how efficient the hull is  – virtually no power goes to waste. Even Volvo was amazed at the fuel figures. At 820rpm you’re doing 10 knots (18.5km/h) and burning a mere 22lt per hour, giving an ocean-going range of 2700nm from the 6000lt tank. Cruising at 25 knots (46km/h), the 65 uses just 165lt per hour. Mind you, it’s twice that when topping out at 36 knots (66.7km/h) at 2350 revs. To have long-range cruising capabilities is a feather in the cap but, typically, the Palm Beach will serve as a dayboat or weekender. Size-wise, there are 21m cruisers with more quantity  – though none with more quality. Interior options differ as much as the buyer demographic, with each Palm Beach being personalised within guidelines rather than boundaries. An owner preference in the test boat’s case was an oak-like stain for the teak, affording the timeless feel and appeal of a gentlemen’s den. WWW.BOAT MAGS.C O M 93

The test boat also had the optional down-galley layout, filling a portside-space on the stateroom level that can alternatively serve as a reading room, office or bunk cabin. Though not overly large, it’s practical, durable and beautifully appointed, with Silestone solid quartz countertops, Miele oven and stove, single sink, under-bench fridges and a dishwasher drawer. Dinnerware and glasses are also included. A kids’ cabin resides aft of the galley, with lateral bunks, and there’s a walk-through passage to an optional crew cabin or utility room. Here you find the washer-dryer hiding. The main stateroom, opposite the galley, features a king-sized berth and en suite with walk-in shower and twin ceramic sinks on the stone tops. A VIP cabin with double berth and dayhead access fills the vee. On saloon level is a C-shaped lounge and helm station to starboard, facing a television unit and the dinette. Large windows, allowing a 360-degree line of sight, can be lowered to fill the zone with fresh air, or provide instant access to the side deck. The owner loves to entertain and therefore specified a cockpit bar that includes a Miele electric hotplate. He also plumbed the bow seating pit to become a 1400lt jacuzzi with heated water and LED mood lighting. A single 25kVA Fischer Panda genset feeds it the necessary power. For water sports or trips ashore, an inflatable tender resides in a stern garage, launched via a hydraulic swim platform, which can double as a passerelle. That, however, might interrupt your whisky and wine time. At the champagne-filled launch party, our jeweller friend was fulsome and authentic in his praise of Richards and staff. He finally had the vessel he’d longed for since childhood, one that will now give him and his family a lifetime of memories. The price of such happiness starts at $AUD3,635,000, with the flybridge another $AUD192,000  – as tested, say $AUD4.2 million. But, as mentioned at the start, the cost is almost irrelevant. The Palm Beach 65 sedan is built for boaters by boaters, not bean counters, and buyers would, and should, fully embrace that fact.

EV TOWING

96 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

IS TOWING UNDER THREAT WITH ELECTRIC VEHICLES? By Cade Wilson - www.aa.co.nz

HITCHING A BOAT OR CARAVAN TO THE BACK OF YOUR VEHICLE AND HEADING TO A LAKE OR CAMPING GROUND IS AS KIWI AS THE HOKEY POKEY ICE CREAM YOU STOP FOR ON THE WAY. IF YOUR VEHICLE DOESN’T HAVE A TOWBAR YOU CAN BUY A GENUINE ONE FROM THE VEHICLE MANUFACTURER OR HAVE ONE MADE AFTERMARKET.

U

nfortunately, though, over the years there have been a few hitches that have limited our towing options. Information for used imported vehicles is very hard to find and tow ratings can be non-existent as towing may not have been in the mind of the manufacturer or a requirement in the market it was intended for. When the CVT (continuously variable transmission- 1-speed) was introduced, tow vehicle recommendations were a little limited as small engines were used and the transmission was not deemed strong enough to tow much more than a bike. But with time and technology advancements, the CVT has been fitted to engines with larger capacity and towing has become a viable option.

Be range-prepared! While it would be great if more tow capable EVs reach our market, it is important to factor in that towing reduces an EV’s battery range. When we took the Tesla Model X for a spin with a 1200kg Haines Hunter SF535 boat attached, the main thing we were interested in was how fast the battery would drain with a load attached, compared to regular driving. Over our short 35km journey, we calculated a 17% drop in battery range. That’s three times faster than standard, essentially reducing a complete charge from 565km to less than 200km… With consideration of the route, terrain (hills) and driving conditions, we still considered this a positive result.

How much tow can an EV tow? If you call a PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) an EV then the answer till recently was yes. The very popular Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has a braked/unbraked capacity of 750kg, while the petrol model is rated to tow up to 1600kgs braked. The new kid on the block, Kia Niro PHEV has a braked tow of 1300kg, which dispels our previous belief that a PHEV wasn’t capable of towing an empty trailer.

Using an EV to tow a long distance The AA has launched EV Charge Finder which uses the revolutionary and world-first EVRoam platform. Hosted on the AA’s Time and Distance calculator, EV Charge Finder enables drivers to plot their journey between charging stations, removing range anxiety stress for EV drivers who will now know with certainty there is a safe and reliable charging station on their route. This platform has been created by NZTA, which collects live data directly from all New Zealand’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure providers, such as ChargeNet and Vector. Tesla chargers don’t yet feature because they’re for Tesla drivers only. No other country in the world has been able to create a database like this with good old’ fashioned collaboration only – but it’s something us Kiwis know a bit about and we’re really proud to provide this resource for EV drivers. Go to aa.co.nz/travel/time-and-distance-calculator and select charging stations.

Currently EV tow ratings are non-existent… that is unless you have a Tesla Model X. Is anyone really surprised? Trust Tesla to break all the moulds. Not only have they been the EV answer to range anxiety, all variants can tow 750kg unbraked and 2250kg braked. These are not just figures on paper Tesla put the power of its Model X to the test by having the electric SUV tow a Qantas 787 Dreamliner for almost 300 meters at Melbourne Airport. And in NZ, the AA carried out its own (1200kg) tow test and was very impressed.

HOW DOES TESLA STACK UP IN THE WORLD OF TOWING?

Y

ou might have recently seen Tesla put the power of its Model X to the test by having the electric SUV tow a Qantas 787 Dreamliner for a distance of almost 300m at Melbourne Airport. Well we couldn’t get our hands on an Air New Zealand aircraft, so we decided to tow something a little more practical - a Haines Hunter SF535. The Model X came equipped with statements of being the safest, quickest and most capable SUV in history. Bold claims we know, so let’s see how it stacked up. The model we tested was the 100D, that’s 100kW battery rating and Dual Motors for the Tesla newbies. The 100D has bragging rights of the longest range of the Model X family coming in at 565kms. Of course, this is based on day-to-day driving, not going out on a fishing trip with the boat hooked up. A vehicle known for its autopilot mode, this was soon disabled as we connected the trailer plug and the vehicle automatically switched into towing mode. The Tesla provided a comfortable ride and felt very stable when towing, helped by a low centre of gravity, slick aerodynamic shape and close to 2500kg kerb weight. The height-adjustable air suspension adapted well in trailer mode and we found the weight of the added motor resulted in a very stable ride. One of things we loved most about the Model X was the incredible amount of torque produced on the hill section of our course. There was a sound like something out of the Jetson’s cartoon as the vehicle accelerated almost instantaneously from 50-80kph. So swift, we were worried we had left the boat behind! When it comes to gearbox performance, the Tesla uses a simple fixed ratio system which is perfect for producing torque from 0 rpm. Despite all of the power provided to the 98 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

wheels, the vehicle always maintained good traction and road holding. We weren’t too impressed with the towing connections electrical system, it meant that the lights were behaving unusually on the trailer despite using the factory adaptor plug. The Model X also uses the more uncommon 50 mm ball so keep this in mind. A Tesla dashboard can bombard you with more charts and graphs than a tax accountant could make sense of, but the most important figure on our test was the average energy consumption. In other terms, we wanted to know how fast the battery drains with a load attached compared to regular driving. Over our short 35km journey, we calculated a 17% drop in battery range. That’s three times faster than standard, essentially reducing a complete charge from 565km to under 200km… With consideration of track and driving conditions, we considered this a positive result. Overall, the Model X has shown us that electric vehicles are indeed capable of towing despite the lack of range. With all of the tech and falcon wing rear doors, this vehicle will definitely turn heads at the boat ramp.

THE SEA RAY 265 SUNDANCER IS THE IDEAL TRANSITION BOAT FOR THOSE STEPPING UP FROM A LARGE DAY BOAT AND LOOKING FOR THEIR FIRST REAL CRUISING BOAT. PLUS IT IS STILL TRAILERABLE. BARRY THOMPSON CHECKS OUT THIS POCKET CRUISER.

The 265 Sundancer can be petrol or diesel Mercruiser powered.

BOAT REVIEW

SEA RAY 265 SUNDANCER

A real pocket cruiser with plenty of space.

A great cockpit for family boating.

T

he Sea Ray 260 Sundancer was designed to be a versatile mini cruiser, with the ability to be transported to various locations. One weekend in the Hauraki Gulf, the next on Lake Taupo. Despite its road legal beam, the boat is surprisingly spacious and more than justifies its pocket cruiser designation. If you are a bit of an adventurer and like exploring, then the Sea Ray 265 Sundancer might just be the boat for you. Where you go is only limited by your time and imagination. There is dedicated accommodation for two and with a simple modification to the dinette, you can sleep up to four in relative comfort. As an overnighter you get everything you need, such as a head, shower and galley, plus the cockpit is designed to make your time aboard is comfortable and enjoyable. Seating, storage,

amenities, there is plenty of everything. As they say, the Sea Ray 265 Sundancer comes loaded.

WIDE RANGE

Sea Ray has always been one of the leaders when it comes to small cruisers and their Sundancer range offers plenty of models. In the Sports Cruiser sector they list just two trailerable models, the 260 and the 265. However, I think that even at just a tad over 8m, this is the sort of boat that is destined for a dry stack, air berth or mooring. It comes in at 2500 kgs dry weight, so once you add a trailer, you are going to have more than 3 tonnes to tow. This will obviously vary depending on what power option you choose, and just how much gear you load into the boat. However, it’s still well within the tow ratings of today’s crew cab utes such as the Isuzu D-Max which has a tow rating of 3500kgs. I was interested to know what the difference was between the 260 and the 265, as when you look at the layout, they are exactly the same. Scott Williamson, Sales manager of Sea Ray importer’s Sports Marine, explained to me that they are the same boat. The 260 Sundancer is the US built version and the 265 Sundancer is the European version, which is the model we get in New Zealand. There are a couple of variations in the colour options and dash layout, apart from that they are one in the same.

CRUISEY COCKPIT

Let’s face it, when it comes to cockpit designs of trailerable cruisers, the US brands do it well. Unlike Kiwi boats that generally concentrate on the space requirements and fishing functions, the Sea Ray 265 is all about relaxing and enjoying the 102 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

ride or anchored up in a quiet bay with a Chardy in hand. Sea Ray are masters at pinching every available space for a task and in the 265 that results in a lot of seating. Unlike Kiwi boats of a similar size, where the seating is less important, in the 265 it’s the reverse. There’s enough seating for ten seated on the port side lounger, double helm seat and starboard squabs. There’s also a wet bar, plenty of drink holders and a foldout aft teak table. A neat feature of the 265 is the rear seat backrest is adjustable to transform into a sun pad. Also, a great seat when waiting for the fish to bite. Yes, you can fish from the 265, but really it all needs to be done from the moulded aft platform. I would probably add a central stainless staple to attach a bait board or bait station and clip on a removable fish bin underneath. The cockpit coamings are way too high and quite impractical for a keen fisho. You can get the boat delivered with a full teak package, which includes the cockpit sole and boarding platform or stay with the standard gelcoat finish. I liked the teak as it really sets the boat off. There’s a drop-down ladder off the platform to assist divers and swimmers. Being a new boat and as yet to find an owner, the optional electronics package had not been installed, but there was space ready for a 12” MFD. The Sea Ray badged instruments are all easy to read and the switches and controls come readily to hand. The adjustable helm seat lets you stand or sit to drive, with uninterrupted visibility all-round. The boat is also available with a full camper enclosure which lets you completely cover the

cockpit from the screen to the transom and all with standing headroom. Great if the weather cuts up and you are parked up in a bay. For a boat under 8m the cockpit is very impressive. The 265 Sundancer doesn’t have any side decks, with access provided via a fold out windscreen and built-in moulded steps on the cabin sliding door. You probably never need to go forward, but if you do, then Sea Ray has made it very easy.

There is a surprising amount of space and amenities inside.

Perfect spot to set up your fishing station.

PRACTICAL CABIN

I was pleasantly surprised as to the space in the cabin and it’s easy to see why these boats are so popular as weekenders. It may even be a little spartan, but it is a very practical and ideal layout for spending the evening relaxing around the forward settee. If there is only two of you, you don’t need to convert the settee into a berth as you already have the aft mid cabin for that. But if you have to make up the extra berths, it’s a quick and straightforward process. WWW.BOAT MA GS.C O M 103

BOAT REVIEW

SEA RAY 265 SUNDANCER

There are a fully enclosed wet head and galley with everything designed to make the best use of the space. Down aft, the mid-cabin takes advantage of the area available under the cockpit and is exceptionally spacious.

Top right: Everything in its place and a place for everything. Bottom right: The foredeck sunpad is a great place to sunbath.

POWER & PERFORMANCE

The 265 Sundancer has plenty of grunt no matter what your choice of power is. While you are limited to a Mercruiser package, you have the choice of petrol or diesel, from 260-300 hp. Standard power is a Mercruiser 4.5 MPI ECT / Bravo III @ 250hp, with the option of a 6.2 MPI ECT @ 300hp. Our test boat was fitted with a Mercury Diesel TDI 3.0L @ 26hp, through a DTS Bravo IIIX Sterndrive, an engine that I reckon is the perfect option for New Zealand owners. Being a very high sided boat it is susceptible to trimming so make sure you do have to work at keeping the tabs in the right position. Windage and wave patterns have an effect on how the boat sits on the water. Once you get it right and it’s a

pleasant boat to drive. I would probably install a set of automatic Zipwake or Humphree interceptors. Being such a high sided boat it also remained extremely dry during our test run on Auckland Harbour and despite running through steep wakes, we never took a drop of water on the screen. The 265 planes quickly and maintains plane at just 9.5 knots. Flat out (3600 rpm) you can expect close to 35 knots and drop that back to a more conservative 3200 rpm and the Sea Ray speedo settles on 27 knots. This really felt like the perfect cruising speed in the light conditions we had on test day.

CONCLUSION

If you are looking for a boat that’s more than just a big fishing machine and want something that is both versatile and practical, then the Sea Ray Sundancer 265 might be for you. It has all the right attributes for staying overnight as well as day cruising and that it can still be trailed is a bonus. Fishing, cruising, diving and just enjoying your time on the water, the Sundancer 265 has it all.

HORIZON V81

Clockwise: Horizon has packed plenty of boat into its huge volume hull with its multitude of decks and living areas. The central island seating with dual access to the boarding platform is retained. esigned especially for the Australian market and the first stock boat for Horizon Yacht Australia, the V81 is essentially an extension of the popular V72, transformed with the addition of the aft platform and extra space on the aft deck and galley. Also, just like the V72, the V81 offers unparalleled interior volume but now with more expansive exterior entertaining areas. The models in the V range, V68, V72 and V80 plus the V81 custom are similar in style and all feature spacious accommodations, wide side decks, and an interior that takes advantage of a wide beam with large windows in the main deck and cabins. Both the V72 and V80 and V81 share the same 6.25m beam, with the V68 proportional narrower at 5.93m. The displacement increases with the size of the model, from 49.73 tonnes for the V68, to 53.8 tonnes for the V72 and 64.8 tonnes for the V81. As already mentioned the only real difference between the V72 and V81 is the extra 2.05m high/low platform added to the existing transom of the V72 and the addition of a few extra feet on the aft deck and galley. The central island seating with dual access to the boarding platform is retained. As is the access from the transom through to the aft cabin and engine room.

108 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

BIG BOAT BOOM

Horizon is doing well in the 24m plus market with boats such as the E75, the revolutionary FD85, with two sold to Australian clients and the RP115. The E75 which is also just under 24.5m has been dominating the Australian market with five E75s currently in build to be delivered to Australia within the next 12 months. “Consulting with Horizon owners around the world, the Horizon design team listened to their feedback and responded with new concepts and designs for both the interior and exterior that puts the new E75 in a class of its own”, says Mark Western, manager Horizon Yacht Australia. He says that this has had a lot to do with the success of the E75 and so that same process was used when designing the V81. Customer feedback indicated that the V72 would be an even better boat with a larger aft deck and galley for entertaining. “With the V81 we have simply made a great boat, the V72, even better and for Australian and New Zealand clients having a larger and more usable aft deck is a huge plus,” added Western. The V81’s lines are inherited from the V72 but are proportional and functional, with a cockpit and platform which has been designed to accommodate the avid angler, diver, or water sports enthusiast.

Her stylish exterior and interior features make the V81 the ultimate entertainer with multiple areas both inside and out. Entertaining with family and friends becomes a real pleasure with a creative foredeck seating area, an exterior bar on the boat deck, and an incredible aft deck for luxurious, shaded relaxation. This is a yacht that provides the amenities and space of a far larger yacht in a stylish profile and is extremely well suited to local Kiwi and Ozzie boating lifestyle.

ONE LEVEL

Horizon has packed plenty of boat into its huge volume hull with its multitude of decks and living areas. From the flush teak deck, the V81 flows with a smooth transition through the alfresco rear door and into the galley, formal dining and saloon completing one large living area. Finished throughout in Oak and Walnut, the V81 embraces the highest standards of elegance. Customisation is not a word that Horizon shies away from and are happy to embrace change within specific design parameters. An example is the galley is traditionally forward in the V72, whereas in the V81, Horizon Yacht Australia have had it moved aft with a large hopper window through to the cockpit. The extensive galley comes complete with an island breakfast bar, full height fridge/freezer, Smeg cooktop and convection microwave, with Corian countertops. The generous servery area to starboard can be changed for a lounger should you feel the galley is already big enough. Forward, to port, is the formal dining area with a solid Corian top table surrounded by chairs for eight. Very superyacht in appearance and certainly adds that touch of style. Luxury furniture is never out of style, no matter what your taste and with the V81 you have the versatility to mix and match from a range of dining room tables and chairs to get the look that suits your preference. Further forward is a free-standing L-shaped raised leather dinette settee with fixed height coffee table. A first on the V81 is a sliding door either side of the saloon and offer easy access to the wide side decks.

The main saloon deck provides uninterrupted sightlines, featuring a flush deck galley-to-saloon transition, floor to ceiling windows on the main deck (more significant than on the standard V72), that maximise natural light as well as enhance exterior styling and spaciousness.

FOUR CABINS

A starboard side companionway leads to the accommodation area which sees a spacious three staterooms/en-suite layout for up to six guests. This includes a full beam master aft, with King size berth, his/hers bathroom spaces, portside lounger and walk-in wardrobe. To port is the VIP guest cabin with adjustable single or twin berths and forward a second guest cabin with a queen size double. Both the guest cabins have en-suites, with one doubling as a day head. A neat feature is a ‘coffee nook’ in the passageway, so you don’t have to go all the way to the galley for a quick coffee fix or a brew. Light timbers and accents present a modern look, but if you are more of a traditionalist and like the darker timbers, then you have that choice. Again, while the layout is very much the standard option, you do have the ability to change things around. Crew quarters and a workspace can be found aft of the engines, although if you run without a crew, then this space doubles as the fourth cabin. Another option would be to turn this area into a beach club much like the FD85. Now that would be trendy!

HIGHLY FEATURED

The V81 is available as a fully enclosed sky lounge or open flybridge with hardtop and clears. The bridge area provides a separate space to pilot the vessel, with exceptional visibility from high profile windows. This is also another perfect social space with a day head and dinette for guests and a full bar on the boat deck. An ADC crane and tender can be accommodated on the extensive aft upper deck. A pair of black helm chairs takes position behind the impressive

The V81hs the addition of a 2.05m high/low platform.

The V8 didn’t get reintroduced back into the market until 2007 when Yamaha brought out the 5.3 litre F350. 112 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

BIGGER It wasn’t so many years ago that 200hp was a big outboard. Then along came the 225, the 250, 275, 300 and in 2007 Yamaha released the first 350hp production outboard onto the market. This month Yamaha have put their stamp on the big outboard market again with the first production outboard over 400hp, the 425 XTO - Extreme Offshore. But while all this is going on with the mainstream Japanese and US outboard manufacturers, an American company, Seven Marine threw the rule book out and produced a 627hp monster. But wait there’s more. While the petrol heads were getting their fix of horsepower, an English company, Cox Powertrain dropped a 300hp diesel into the mix. If you are in the market for an outboard over 300hp (or multiples of), then you have seventeen to choose from. Cox has just the one engine at present but no doubt there will be more to follow. Evinrude also has one with the 300 G2 and Suzuki, Yamaha and Seven Marine have three apiece. Mercury leads the pack with six engines. But then Mercury has always been active at the high-performance end of the market, a by-product of a bygone era in the 1970s when the horsepower race was very much a battle between Mercury and OMC. WWW.BOAT MA GS.C O M 113

In 1981 OMC introduced the baddest of them all, a purpose V8 race engine.

T

HE ‘70s was an era of outboard factory racing where Mercury battled Outboard Marine Corporation (parent company of the Johnson and Evinrude brands at the time) for bragging rights across the globe. They fought head to head at every race and none more so than the European ON/OZ tunnel boat circuit. The ON class had a maximum engine limit of 2 litres and OZ was over 2 litres, with no limit to the size of the cylinder volume. They were the golden years of tunnel competition when winning prestigious events such as the 6-hours of Paris or 3-hours of Amsterdam had a direct impact on European outboard sales. 1973 was the magic year when both OMC and Mercury introduced the V6 in the famous Paris race for the ON class. OMC purpose built their new 2 litre V6 from scratch. It was a cross flow design and because of the two-litre limit, OMC could not just add two more cylinders to the famous Super Strangler/Stinger GP V4. Mercury turned out with an all-new V6 that would become known to the world as Black Max. The engine earned its stripes winning races for a good two years prior it’s 1976 public debut. Mercury Racing produced many competition outboards based off the V6 platform. This was also the year that Mercury Racing was established as a division of Mercury Marine. Known as Mercury Performance Products at the time, its sole responsibility was product development and promoting Mercury’s image through racing. Something that they have successfully continued to do for 45 years. Mercury Racing was established as a business unit of Mercury Marine in 1992. In 1976 OMC released the new V6CCC, a 2.448 litre cross flow engine that was based on a standard production 200hp V6, but on a short column and with some very highly tuned additions that allowed it to run to 7200rpm. They followed this in 1978 with a brand new purpose built 3 114 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

The Evinrude 3.6XP was the recreational version of the racing V8

litre looper V6 with fuel injection. This engine was also called CCC but was an entirely different animal from the first CCC. Then in 1981 OMC introduced the baddest of them all, a purpose V8 race engine. The 555lb, eight carbs 3.6-liter two-stroke V8 engine (3.6 GT and 3.6 XP) were officially 275-hp engines, but lore suggests that the engines made at least 300 hp at the prop at 6250 rpm. Like all two-strokes, they liked a lot of fuel-91 octane in this case-and they liked to run wide-open, making them unsuited for most recreational users. What they were good for was speed. Also like all two-strokes, the 275 responded well to tuning, and in 1989, a 10,000-rpm, methanol-burning Evinrude V8 (est 600hp) set a 176.556-mph world record for outboards. A record that still stands a quarter-century later. In 1988, the 275s were enlarged to become the 4.0-litre GT and XP 300 V8s, which were produced through 1995, along with occasional 275 and 250 variants. In time the racing V8 was available to the public in a recreational mode, but it never proved popular. It was big, heavy and not that reliable. The V8 two-stroke was killed for a bunch of reasons, the most significant being the introduction of fuel injection, which made the same power possible from a much smaller V6, as Mercury soon proved. But by any standards, the OMC V8 300s were beasts.

Yamaha have upped the ante with the all-new 425 horsepower, Yamaha XTO Offshore.

HE V8 didn’t get reintroduced back into the market until 2007 when Yamaha brought out the 5.3 litre F350. Unlike the OMC V8, which was 2-stroke, the Yamaha F350 was the world’s first V8 4 stroke outboard. The OMC V8 weighed in at 250 kg, with the F350 a much heavier 365 kg. Also as opposed to OMC, it was never intended for racing. The F350 was designed to provide massive thrust for the heaviest off-shore outboard-powered boats. The motor is a double overhead-cam 60-degree V8, displacing 5330cc. It features variable valve timing, ionic combustion sensors, a new anti-corrosion system, massive forged motor mounts and transom bracket. It was the first Yamaha outboard to feature a digital drive-by-wire throttle and shift control. Yamaha says the motor’s astounding weight is a result of its desire to make the F350 extremely durable, and reliable enough to take far off-shore. When it comes to 300hp, Yamaha has an award winning F300 in its stable. It shares the same V 6 4.2 litre block used for the F250 and F225 and comes with all the latest technology from Yamaha. They all share the advanced 24-valve DOHC engine with features such as EFI as well as VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing). Combining technology with style, the sleek, compact design is one of the lightest in its class, has one of the smallest displacements and comes with a high output 70 amp alternator. Now they have upped the ante with the all-new 425 horsepower, Yamaha XTO Offshore. This beast of an engine has been designed from the ground up to deliver maximum power and thrust. Powered by a big bore, 5.6 litre, naturally aspirated engine, the XTO Offshore opens up a whole new class of large outboard driven boats. The XTO Offshore is not only the most potent outboard ever produced by Yamaha, but it is also their most technologically advanced, with the introduction of Yamaha’s first fully integrated power system. This system combines a revolutionary fully integrated electric steering system, with their premium CL7 multifunction display, advanced ‘drive-by-wire’ throttle controls and Helm Master joystick docking and positioning controls - creating a truly effortless boating experience. Other key features include an in-water gear lube change system, oversized rugged gear case and hardened gears, massive 90 Amp power-generation system and large diameter XTO OS high thrust prop. The Yamaha V8 is available in 25”, 30” and 35” shaft lengths.

N 2018 Mercury joined the V8 outboard fraternity, but interestingly they have not chosen (yet) to bring their new engine out in the larger horsepower market. The multiple new 4.6L V-8 Pro XS outboards are only available from 200-300hp. The new 200-300hp Pro XS models are built on a 4.6L quad-cam powerhead that delivers excellent torque while weighing just 229 kg, making them the lightest V8s on the market. They are even lighter than their inline 6 Verado engines. The 200-300hp Pro XS Four Stroke models also feature a robust 1.25-inch diameter prop shaft and are available with a next-generation Torque Master gearcase, that offers a 1.75:1 gear ratio and low-water pickups on the nosecone for added mounting and trimming flexibility. The new four-stroke offer consumers choices between mechanical or digital (DTS) controls and hydraulic or power steering. The engines are also available in multiple colours and can be further customised with the addition of an accent panel. The next-generation outboard engines are part of the most extensive single new product development program Mercury has undertaken in its nearly 80-year history, prompting a significant investment in expanding its manufacturing footprint. To cater for the high performance boaties, who find 300hp a bit tame, Mercury offers two engines; the 350 Verado and the 400R. Both are based on a 2.6 litre six-cylinder inlineblock, which is supercharged with charge air cooling and electronic boost pressure control. The Verado engine platform stems back to 2004 when it was released in 200/225/250 & 275 configurations. Today the Verado is available in 250/300/350 & 400 hp. Mercury’s in line 6 Verado engine was the first production outboard to embed a supercharger into the motor! The centrifugal supercharger is cooled via an active air intercooler that is designed to inject boost air that is the exact same temperature as pure intake air. Mercury’s 400R is based on a supercharged 2.6 litre six-cylinder inline-block.

N 2017 when Suzuki released the DF350A, they were the third outboard manufacturer to offer a 350 hp outboard, joining Mercury’s 350 Verado and Yamaha’s F350. With this motor, Suzuki, like its competitors were looking for a slice of the US offshore centre console market with triple and quadruple outboards. To make their mark in this competitive area, Suzuki needed to do something different and they did that with the very innovative pair of contra-rotating three-blade propellers. This helps boost holeshot, minimises prop torque, grips better in tight turns, and improves lowspeed handling in forward or reverse. Contra-rotating props also negate the need to mix right and left hand rotating motors in multi-outboard installations. The contra-rotating props also help distribute torque across two inline gears that are smaller in diameter than would be necessary with a single prop. This helps keep the gear case as small and hydrodynamic as possible to reduce drag, increase efficiency and boost top speed. Suzuki engineers also repositioned the primary cooling water pickup to the front of the bullet, with a secondary pickup on the underside, just forward of the skeg.

116 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

In 2017 when Suzuki released the DF350A, they were the third outboard manufacturer to offer a 350 hp outboard.

To increase the power output of the 4.4-litre block (up 0.4 litres from the existing Suzuki 300), the engineering team increased the compression ratio to 12:1. The new 350 carried over many features of the 300, (released in 2006) including electronic throttle and shift for smoother control, Lean Burn to maximise fuel efficiency and two-gear reduction to help keep the gear case compact. Suzuki’s newest addition to the big engine market is the DF325A, released in early 2018. One of Suzuki’s prerequisites when designing the DF325A, was it had to be able to run on 91 RON fuel. It is essentially the DF350A de-tuned and features all the same innovations such as a dual prop system, dual injection, 2-stage gear reduction and variable valve timing.

When it comes to bragging rights, Seven Marine is way out on their own. No one even comes close! Designed as an ultra-high performance outboard for the US sports boat market, the Seven Marine engines offer a whole new dimension to the way we see outboards and despite a horrendous price tag, they are finding plenty of transoms. Plus most of those are multi rigs, up to four or even five on some offshore centre consoles in the US. Seven Marine, based in Florida, are the pioneers of extreme horsepower outboard marine engines. Entering the market in 2010 with the 557, which was the largest outboard at the time, this highly innovative company continues to push the boundaries in outboard technology and innovations. Within five years Seven Marine had already produced an even bigger engine than their initial offering. The 627SV was unveiled at the 2015 Miami International boat show and now there are three Seven Marine Engines available; the 527, the 557S and the 627SV. The Seven Marine engines have only recently been available in New Zealand and Australia and attracted huge attention. The basis of the trio of engine packages; 527hp, 577hp and the 627hp, the highest horsepower outboard on the planet, is the 6.2-litre supercharged V8 GM LSA Gen 4 engine, which

N November this year, British diesel engine innovator, Cox Powertrain, will be opening the order books to distributors for one of the marine industry’s most talked about engine developments. The CXO300 is the world’s highest power density diesel outboard engine and has been developed for commercial and military users of multiple applications and will be a game-changer for the marine industry. The launch of the high powered 300hp diesel outboard follows an intense ten-year development programme following an initial contract win from the British Military of Defence to develop a new concept diesel outboard for use on its fast response navy vessels. The final engine concept is based on a 4-stroke, V8 architecture which will offer users higher fuel efficiency, greater range, higher torque and substantial total cost of ownership advantages. The CXO300 has 100% higher peak torque at the crankshaft than the leading petrol 300hp outboards, 60% higher when compared with a leading 350hp and this difference is amplified when looking below the mid-range rpm. The increased low-end torque will push heavy loaded hulls through rough waters with less strain on the engine and improve even further the fuel performance in comparison to similar petrol outboards, which are notorious for their lack of low-end torque. Larger vessels will also benefit from the higher torque

When it comes to bragging rights, Seven Marine is way out on their own.

can also be found under the hood of high-performance Cadillac automobiles. With a goal of broadening the torque band to better power heavier boats, Seven Marine has modified the cylinder heads to create more turbulence in the combustion chambers. The result, according to Seven Marine, is a gain of about 50 foot-pounds of torque - the 627 pumps out 600 foot-pounds from 3000 rpm to WOT at 5500 rpm - and 70 more at peak horsepower. And it makes that power on 89 octane fuel. The fact that each Seven Marine outboard weighs more than 545 kg does not seem to be an issue on really big boats. Seven Marine now offers a twin-prop CR gear case to provide the blade area required to move heavier boats, in addition to its standard case (good for 80 mph) and a crescent-shaped GT gear case for those looking for even more speed. Seven Marine outboards are offered in fabulous custom paint, to match the equally fabulous finish of the boats they would power. Seven Marine has added another level of flash with its SpectraBlade cowl, a revised shape that incorporates strips of diffused LED lighting that can be adjusted to produce just about any colour imaginable.

curves, both at the low end and the high end. The engine offers fuel savings of approximately 25% in comparison to a similar 300hp petrol outboard, allowing boaters to go that much further. The CXO300 is also designed to have a lifespan two to three times longer than current outboard engines and to ease the servicing process by allowing a “dry” service every 1000h or once a year, whichever comes sooner. NATO’s single fuel policy, which aims to cut the use of petrol-driven equipment in favour of diesel engines, is also a significant factor for The launch of the Cox many operators and the introduction of a viable diesel outboard, such as the 300hp diesel outboard follows an intense CXO300, will be transformational for ten-year development professional users of fast response programme. vessels.Cox says users of the CXO300 could save up to 45% over the lifespan of the outboard, based on heavy use of 6,000 hours with an overhaul at 3,000 hours. VINRUDE has bucked the trend somewhat and has not followed the four-stroke path, preferring to stay with the direct injection two-stroke platform. The biggest of these is the E-Tec G2 300. It was June 2014, when BRP took the shroud off of a secret project that was five years in the making, the Evinrude E-Tec G2 series. The range now consists of ten engines from 150hp-300hp. BRP claimed that their new G2 outboard would deliver a 15% fuel economy improvement by being more efficient in changing fuel into energy. At W.O.T. the 300HP V6 74° E-TEC direct injection G2 outboard burns 79.5 lph, burns 2-3 times less emissions than their competitors and produces the lowest levels of carbon monoxide (CO) of any outboard currently on the market. outboard, the G2’s are 100% emission complaint globally. The G2 outboard features a distinctive piston thrust away from the hot exhaust port, which leads to increased durability and produces 20% more torque (over 600 foot pounds at 5,000-6,000 rpm). Other features of the G2 include a titanium oxide coating on all aluminium parts, a lightning-fast microprocessor with failsafe protection mode, an auto breakin period, and an auto-storage function. One of the very cool features of the Evinrude E-Tec G2 is the customisable colour choice. The G2 is available with 14 different swoosh colours for the accent, matched with two standard colours (black or white) and the three optional colours of red, silver or blue, producing over 400 customisable colour combinations in all. VOYAGE OF THE ENVOY: PART FORTY FIVE

LATE START TO ENVOY’S 2018 CRUISING Text and photos by Laurie & Diane Cranfield

Launching Envoy at Lefkas Marina

120 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

Classic motor vessel moored stern-to at Agni, Corfu Island.

ENVOY UNDER SALES OFFER

We bought our trusty Nordhavn 46 in late 2006 and that twelve years has sure gone quickly – all documented in forty four previous editions of this series of articles. We hadn’t imagined this wonderful adventure lasting so long and during last year’s cruise we decide to sell Envoy. But there are logistical difficulties around selling your boat overseas. When your boat is laid up for winter she’s not presenting at her best and can’t be demonstrated without bringing her back into cruising mode, taking several days or even more if she’s on the hardstand. Obviously it’s not easy to show her to prospects and a buyer has to be pretty serious to spend money travelling to the other side of the world to see her. We decide to start advertising a couple of months before the start of our 2018 cruise so we’d be aboard Envoy in cruise mode and therefore able to show her to any interested buyers. Immediately after buying Envoy we started our Blog and its readership climbed well beyond our expectations, now reaching 200,000 hits since inception. So we advertise Envoy on our Blog and receive many enquiries including one from an Australian couple, which now looks like finalising into a sale as they’re coming to Lefkas Marina in Greece late October to do a survey and sea trial. In fact not only have this couple been following our Blog since inception but followed Envoy’s Atlantic crossing by the previous owners in 2004, so they’ve always had a stong interest in her. The deal we’re making includes the right for us to use Envoy during 2019 so our adventures may not be over quite yet. Personal circumstances delay our departure this year, but in August we finally arrive in Lefkada Marina after a good trip from Auckland spending a night each in Dubai and Athens on the way. We’ve always found Emirates to be a great airline and the nearly 17 hour flight passes quite quickly aided by watching movies and a solid eight hours sleep. We like Emirates’ generous 30kg luggage allowance, their lenient attitude towards cabin bags and the generous space between economy seat rows.

Sailing Yacht A.

A R R I V I N G AT L E F K A S M A R I N A

We arrive to find Envoy on the hardstand looking great as expected under the care of our contractor – Sailand and more progress achieved with her cruise readiness than we expected, a far cry from last year’s arrival finding Envoy damaged by a fire on an adjacent boat. Sailand had completed a major refurbishment of our main Lugger engine’s above water exhaust system - replacing some sections, building a new stainless steel muffler and replacing all heat insulation. They had also completed Envoy’s anti-fouling and attended to a small list of non-routine winter jobs: •

Sealing two acylic ventilation hatches into their aluminium frames where the old sealant had failed

Checking the main prop shaft’s alignment, its internal rubber sleeve and clamps and greasing the stuffing box sealings

Replacing a leaking galley sink faucet with a new one WWW.BOAT MA GS.C O M 121

CRUISING AGAIN

Just eight days after our arrival we head about 15 miles south of the marina to anchor at Ormos Varko, a bay on the mainland. Better late than never and we savour this time cruising with sunny skies, light winds, temperatures in the low 30s, little humidity and the sea a beautiful 28 degrees. We’re pleased that following the servicing of our exhaust system its sound is consistent throughout Envoy’s rpm range, whereas previously there were a couple of areas in the range where it had a bit of a rattle. After a few days cruising around the local area near the marina we anchor of Lefkas town to pick up our friend Chris, aka McGyver, who will be cruising with us for nearly a month until late Sept. Chris isn’t called McGyver for nothing and we have a list of jobs ready to test his expertise – the more the better so far as Chris is concerned. While in Lefkada we visit a local carpenter who’s making some mooring line rat guards for us. On some islands rats are a problem and these guards prevent rats from crawling along the lines when mooring stern to shore. I wasn’t able to find anybody selling these in New Zealand before we left and the carpenter charges a very reasonable 30 Euros (about NZ$50) for four. If rats get aboard your boat they can be difficult to remove and meanwhile can cause considerable damage and mess as they seem to eat anything. Heading north in the direction of Corfu we anchor off the town of Preveza where we meet Ross (a Kiwi) and Cindy from yacht Antares and visit a great restaurant called Apagkio where I have one of my nicest ever pasta dishes together with the inevitable, predictable but delicious Greek salad. Di notices some tomatoes on display and asks if she can buy some, but with typical Greek generosity the staff give them to us for free. Greek tomatoes are particularly tasty as well as being much cheaper than those at home. Ross is looking for some scuba gear. I won’t be needing mine again and it takes up quite a lot of room aboard Envoy so we come to an arrangement for Ross to take it off our hands. People imagine the Med must be overcrowded with boats during summer and this is certainly the case in some popular bays just like in New Zealand, but further north we stop and

anchor for the first time at the island of Andipaxoi, having a beautiful bay all to ourselves overnight. This brings the number of Greek islands where we’ve overnighted to 65 (with plenty more to go as there are about 227 inhabited Greek islands out of more than 6,000 in total). In the morning another Nordhavn called Moxie (from Florida) drops anchor in our bay and of course we meet up for a chat. Bob from Moxie tells us they recently went to Montenegro and tried to clear-in for a visit. However Bob doesn’t have any form of skipper’s qualification and not only would the authorities not let Moxie stay, but wouldn’t let her leave until Bob hired a commercial captain to take them out of Montenegran waters. This seems a pretty tough policy, but reinforces the fact that regardless of experience it’s wise for skippers to have some formal qualification. It doesn’t seem to matter what that is so long as the authorities can see some piece of paper and tick their box. We spend a couple of days anchored off picturesque Petriti and then head to Corfu’s Gouvia marina. On the way we pass a very strange yacht looking like something out of a sci-fi movie, called “Sailing Yacht A”. In fact she is the world’s largest sailing yacht, owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko. She’s 143m long with a 25m beam, a cost of Euro 400m (about NZ$690m), eight decks with three swimming pools, she carries 54 crew, can achieve 21 knots and the lowest deck has a 30 cm thick glass hull for under water viewing.

VISIT TO CORFU’S GOUVIA MARINA

Our main reason for visiting Gouvia is for technician Angelos to install our water maker’s main pump which has been reconditioned in Athens during our absence. This is done and the water maker works fine when we test it briefly in the impure marina waters, then a few days later we run it for three hours and all works well making about 90 litres of fresh water an hour. Our Nautica RHIB has been losing some air, requiring a few pumps every three or four days, so A1 Yachting arrange for someone to repair it. A few days later it’s returned hard as a drum and has remained so since. Our dual trumpet air horn has failed due to water ingress and electrician Leo orders and fits a new unit for us. an instrument technician to look at our B&G wind gear. He removes the mast’s sender unit for inspection and has since ordered parts for its repair. Envoy has a vacuum gauge connected to the main Lugger engine’s primary Racor fuel filters. As filters become clogged they create a vacuum, indicating that it’s time to think about changing them. We’ve never seen any movement at all in the vacuum gauge and have wondered if it’s working. So with Leo we check this out by gradually reducing the fuel supply to the Lugger while it’s running to create a vacuum. Sure enough the gauge shows vacuum, confirming that it’s working. Because Envoy has a fuel polishing system and all fuel is filtered through a 2 micron filter into a day tank even before going to the primary Racor filter, our filters just don’t get contaminated. Leaving the marina we anchor in Kalami, made famous by being home to the English Durell family of authors in the 1930s and now featured in the popular British television series – The Durrells. Kalami is on the western side of the one-mile-wide North Corfu Channel separating Corfu from Albania. Several cruise ships pass through this channel each day and although they reduce speed they still create wakes up to a metre high causing anchored boats to roll heavily if they are broadside to the wake and large waves to break ashore. Fortunately we are able to deploy our flopper-stoppers to reduce most of this roll. 124 PACIFIC POWERBOAT NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

Another contractor also polished Envoy’s bootstripe and white topsides gelcoat areas while yet another repaired a slow air leak in one of the pontoons of our smaller Valiant RHIB. A huge multi-wheeled crane with about 25 tonne lifting capacity drives next to Envoy to incongruously lift our Nautica RHIB weighing about 350 kg down onto a trailer for annual servicing of its 25HP Yamaha outboard. Everything aboard Envoy seems to be working well except for our 15 yearold B&G Network wind speed and direction gear which powers up but doesn’t read wind speed or direction. The local B&G specialist inspects the system and says the sender unit on the mast has failed. He tries to order a new one without success, so we decide to get it checked out later by another contracor we have a lot of confidence in at Corfu. Also our more than 16 year-old Northstar GPS has failed and we’ll bring it back home to try and get it repaired.

Next we come close to Albanian waters to anchor off the northern Greek coastal village of Sayiadha. Again we are the sole boat there. Next morning a Greek Coast Guard inflatable comes alongside and one of the crew politely asks to check our papers. Finding everything in order they soon leave us. Another coastal village further south called Myrtos is one of our favourites and we spend several nights anchored here. As all the Greek villages have great bakeries Chris and I make it our mission to test their chocolate cake, finding that Myrtos comes out on top. The weather forecast advises of a gale warning up to Force 8 causing us to move to an anchorage called Igoumenitsa Creek where few boats go, there’s no swell from the open sea and plenty of swinging room. Although we prepare for a big blow there are only very strong winds offshore and the strongest winds we experience are gusts in the mid 20 knots. All too soon Chris’s time with us comes to an end and we take him across to Corfu to catch a flight to Dubai before returning to Igoumenitsa Creek. Yes, McGyver did complete the list of jobs and more. PMB’s next issue should see the sale of Envoy finalised.
