EING IN HIS LATE 30’S he was looking for a boat that was ultra-modern, stylish and a little different from the norm. I asked why not something from a local builder, and he said that firstly they were out of his price range and secondly too conservative for his taste. While there are some awesome new concepts coming from the UK, European and Italian yards, such as Princess, Sunseeker, Sea Ray, Axopar, Beneteau, Galleon and Jeanneau, locally it’s very much improving on the norm. Australia’s two largest cruiser manufacturers, Riviera and Maritimo, continue to release outstanding new models, (check out the Riviera 64 SMY this issue). Still, while they are stunning in both appearance and layout, they are not too radical. They have refrained from going too far from mainstream in their designs, with such features as plumb or reverse sheer bows, stepped hulls, forwardfacing screens, outboard power, cockpit verandas and single access side decks. Understandably for Riviera and Maritimo, it is the traditional flybridge and sports sedan market that they co-exist in. Generally, that is quite conservative, catering to more mature
PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE
owners that know what they want. The cost of tooling a new boat, no matter what the size is enormous, so to take a punt and release a radically new concept that looks nothing like a contemporary Riviera or Maritimo would be a bold move for either company. Brands such as Beneteau, Jeanneau, Galleon and Axopar have all sold some of their most futuristic boats into New Zealand and Australia and while not a huge market, they do have their following. The 10m+ powerboat market in New Zealand is around 100 new boats a year. This is split 60/40 in favour of imports, with the majority of Kiwi boats custom builds. Compared to the many thousands of trailer boats sold every year, it’s not a huge market sector so I can understand why staying mainstream makes commercial sense. However, I would love to see either Riviera or Maritimo come out with something really different that would make a statement on not only the local but also global market. They both have the expertise, experience and know-how to do it. Or maybe a local designer can find a client who is prepared to leap into something totally futuristic. A turbine powered foiling monohull perhaps.

PUBLISHERS NOTE with Doug Dukeson
A stint on the dark side…
As a few more grey hairs appear, and a few of my other fellow boatie mates have swung across to caravanning and motor homing, Carla and I recently purchased a self-contained caravan ourselves, for the odd grey nomad adventure here and there.
T
HE TOING AND FROING of boating versus caravanning has been with us for years having owned both over the past 20 years. At times we have had both in the driveway to ease the mind and decision making. There are distinct advantages for both. Boating has the solitude of getting away to a beautiful quiet bay, to chill out and forget all the ‘issues’ back onshore. The less cell phone reception, the better! Although boating is much more weather-sensitive, where caravanning is more, just a hookup and go. You don’t really worry too much about the forecast, or what way the wind is blowing and never have to worry about an anchor dragging at night! Mind you, on our maiden voyage with the new caravan, losing a wheel at 90kmph on a rural back road became a ‘little exciting’ as we watched the caravan’s left wheel overtake us, while we ground to a halt. Thank goodness it was not the right hand wheel as right at that moment a motorcyclist approached from the oncoming direction. This certainly put a hold to that caravanning adventure, which then became a motel holiday for the night. Next morning it was $960 to get the caravan transported back to Auckland.

Our five kids who had grown up with very much some sort of a boat in their lives. It has been a vast mix of options, from PWC’s, ski boats, cabin boats to a 14m launch. Right now they are a little miffed about no water fix for the coming season. Luckily we have friends with boats, so I don’t think the kids or we will miss out. Well hopefully, once all this Covid shit is clear of our lives. We are already feeling a little restless about not having our own water chariot, but I am sure we will sort something about before next summer. Perhaps the nautical juices will start flowing again as we walk the Auckland Boat Show in October. I look forward to catching up with you at the show. Check out Phil Gilbert’s column on page 104, as he too has gone to the dark side. Doug Dukeson Publisher These Aucklanders found the answer to ‘choosing between boating and caravanning.

The Changing Face of Marine Stereos

ACK IN THE 80'S a stereo system on the boat was probably an Autocrat, Sanyo, Panasonic, or Clarion car stereo and a simple set of box speakers. And if a drip of the deadly salt water made its way to the stereo, it very quickly became junk. This generally happened within 12 months of installation. Today we see marine entertainment systems that play a plethora of sources, connect to the internet, network together, have touch screens, are entirely waterresistant, play in multiple zones, have complex remote systems etc. and are designed to deliver up to decades of trouble-free music (or pictures). So, what has gone on in the 40 years between, one may ask? One of the first companies to enter the marine centric market was Alpine, with the completely marinised, 7235M radio cassette player. This incorporated a Quick Release Bracket (QRB) that enabled the user to transfer his stereo from the boat to a car and visa versa. This limited the amount of time the stereo lived in the harsh marine environment. Alpine even supplied a padded, over the shoulder bag to transport your very delicate piece of equipment. This system worked well, because it incorporated many marine ideas, including water-resistant controls and a cassette flap that sealed closed. In subsequent years, many electronics companies introduced marine stereos to their line ups. Still, they were all little more than reverse-engineered car stereos, which were never intended for the harsh conditions of the marine environment. These units soon fell to the nasties of saltwater and salt air and were not the most reliable products. In 2005, Sir Peter Maire invested in a fledgling car audio company (Fusion) with a vision to produce marine entertainment systems that were designed, from the first pencil stroke, for the rigours of the marine environment. Not only freshwater but the harsh conditions we experience here in the South Pacific. Being an audiophile, he had designed products that sounded similar to what we expected of our high-end systems at home. First released was the waterproof 500 series which included a CD/Tuner and an iPod inside version. This transferred not only the music but the complete menu structure of the iPod to the stereo (one of Fusions many world firsts) and charged it as well. Panbo, probably the most prestigious marine electronics reviewer in the world, described the 500 series as a “Master Class” by which all other marine stereos should be measured. Over the next ten years or so, Fusion released many stereo systems until today where the Apollo all dancing and singing 700 series was released. The 770 model networks with other stereos, has a touch colour screen etc. and was recently reviewed as truly “The Sum of Audio Innovation”. Fusion has now grown to the enviable position as the clear leader in the marine entertainment world market, some saying with a world market share exceeding 65%, supplying the largest builders the world over. Not bad for a little ol’ electronics company from Down Under. These days, Fusion is now owned by Garmin, which has most certainly put fuel in her tank, with the development of many exciting new products and guarantees a very bright future for Fusion indeed. As this writer steps aside from the marine entertainment industry after nearly 40 years and thinks about what has been achieved over that time, one can only wonder what the future holds – the only limit is one’s imagination…who knows?

CSB HUNTSMAN CENTURION HT
NOW WITH A LID The CSB Huntsman Centurion was released to coincide with CSB Huntsman’s 25th anniversary last year and while the first model was a traditional full cabin version, the plans were always to follow with a hardtop and bowrider.
W
ell, the hardtop is now complete, with the first showing of the Centurion HT at the recent Te Rakau Boat Show in Auckland. Essential the same boat as the cabin model, the only difference is the fibreglass hardtop. Geoff Robinson, from CSB Huntsman Boats says that while the cabin model was well received, they knew that the demand was there for a hardtop. “We have had a lot of interest in a hardtop version and from the orders we have already had from our dealers, it seems it is going to be a big seller for us”, says Geoff. Ultimately there will be four half decks based on the same hull in either outboard or sterndrive variants. Geoff says that a bowrider model will be the next to be released, which is being pitched at the international market. The first sterndrive version will be out in the new year. The cabin layout is very similar to other comparable sized CSB Huntsman models, although has a little more headroom, with two 1.8m side squabs and an infill to make a larger berth. The cockpit layout is very traditional CSB Huntsman, although with a more considerable dash, and higher coamings forward. It is longer and broader than the Series 6000 and the same length as the 7m Crusader. www.csbhuntsmanboats.co.nz

Super Positive Tairua Show With the cancellation of The Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show, Grady-White’s NZ dealer took the bold step to organise their own boat show.
W
OW! What a surprise. The inaugural Tairua Boat Show held in early August was an outstanding success and was not only well supported by the marine industry but also by show patrons. With the cancellation of the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show is seems both the industry and the boating public were keen for a boat show and the Tairua Show certainly came at the right time. Organisor, Stuart Arnold, the NZ importer for GradyWhite Boats, estimated that over 10000 people came through the show and they were not just from the local area. While Tairua, Whitianga and Pauanui certainly provided their share of attendees, there were many people from Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga. There were over 80 boats on the hardstand area and in the marina, plus a vast array of electronics, fishing

and diving gear and bits and pieces of marine equipment. Most of the big brands were there, and you were spoiled for choice when it came to alloy hardtops and RIBS. Smuggler Marine’s Dave Pringle said he found the show very upbeat, with plenty of people to talk through and some positive leads. “We didn’t sell a boat at the show, but we have some potential buyers to follow up, and if the show is on again next year, we will be back”, said David. Jason Elvines came from Nelson with three of his DNA branded boats and said he had a fantastic show, better than he ever imagined. “We had so much interest in our new 801 that I can see several orders following the show”. He added that he would certainly make it back if the show was on again next year. Dayne Horne from Marco Boats was another that came away from the

show with a lot of leads and was overwhelmed with the response he had to the radical 600 Sojourn, a custom build for The Lateral Line online fishing show, Most exhibitors came away happy with the show, and it seemed that if you had a boat or product you did well. PPB had a stand with plenty of the current and back issues of PowerBoat, and we thought we would have plenty for the two days. Wrong! After a big rush on Saturday till about 2.00 pm, we were down to less than four boxes for the Sunday. Needless to say, we were virtually all sold out by midday. Stuart Arnold told me that he was pleased that the exhibitors all reported such great response that, that all his hard work in putting the show on had proven well worthwhile. Will there be a repeat in 2021? Watch this space.

WESTHAVEN MARINA REDEVELOPMENT
Westhaven Expanding Westhaven Marina is undergoing a huge redevelopment project which could eventually see the addition of over 80 new berths.
A
NYONE DRIVING over the Auckland Harbour Bridge cannot help but notice all the development going on at Westhaven Marina. Not only are there new facilities being built on shore for marine operators, such as brokers and chandlery, but also on the water. Pile berths have traditionally been an important part of Westhaven as an alternative to floating berths. More recently however the moorings which are only accessible via dinghy, have becoming increasingly underused. Pontoon berths on the other hand are at full capacity and there is a growing demand. To help alleviate the shortage of
pontoon berths, Westhaven Marina have plans to retire all the old pile moorings in favour of 84 new pontoon berths. The development will use existing marina water space more effectively and includes 40 x 20m, 39 x 24m and 5 x catamaran berths. The initial construction is for AA pier only with 42 berths, with AB pier to be built late next year subject to funding approval. This will result in a significantly improved utilisation of the water space, consolidating existing moorings with 50 new serviced berths. The design of berths is based not only on current demand but anticipates the future requirements. All long-term pile berth customers are expected to be accommodated in a reconfigured pile berth facility in the north-east corner of the marina. A causeway is being created by extending the existing northern reclamation using a process of mudcreting where dredged marine sediment is mixed with concrete before being used to construct the new land area. It will provide new public open space including trees, raingardens and

a viewing platform, providing new perspectives of the Waitematā and seating and open areas for watching boat-races. It will also provide access to the new piers, and carparking facilities for berth holders. A key part of the project’s first stage has now seen the closure of the smaller of Westhaven’s two entrances, the Western entrance. This will mean all vessels entering and exiting the precinct will use the one entrance. To facilitate access for deep drafted boats to the northern entrance, the channel will be dredged to 3.7m. The closure of the Western entrance will provide a calmer berthing environment and enable greater amenities and capacity for Westhaven Marina users, including the creation of additional 110 carparks.

Riviera announces new 50 Sports Motor Yacht Riviera has unveiled plans for the new 50 Sports Motor Yacht (SMY) that redefines the form, function and feel of the quintessential blue-water yacht.
T
living space you get with an enclosed flybridge is a real bonus – it’s a place to escape to so easily with an internal staircase, and you have the ability to be higher and to see further ahead at sea.” A new breed of motor yacht The exterior of the 50 SMY is all about the harmonious marriage of the handsomely sweeping superstructure – unmistakably Riviera in its profile – with the sporty, large-volume hull form. She makes a grand statement of both grace and purpose. The 50 draws inspiration and innovation from the popular SMY Collection with its 64, 68 and 72 models – most notably in the cockpit, mezzanine and foredeck configurations that consequently look right at home in the 50 SMY. As one of five distinct yet integrated luxury living zones, the saloon also offers two opposing lounge areas that can seat six to eight guests in total comfort. Linda Hall says this arrangement was a major drawcard: “The social areas of the new 50 SMY look beautiful,” she says. “There’s the cockpit, mezzanine, the almost circular seating arrangement of the lounges in the saloon, the flybridge offering additional onboard space, and the generous downstairs accommodation. The design team has also excelled with the accommodation plan with a fullbeam master suite bathed in natural light from large hull windows, a queensized island berth, chaise lounge and en suite. Guests are afforded a VIP stateroom with ensuite/day head forward and twin bunk cabin, all with exceptional headroom and airiness.
HE RIVIERA design team in collaboration with 4D Designs have created the 50 SMY, a remarkably spacious new yacht and brimming with unique features. This sophisticated new design draws on the heritage of Riviera’s larger and very successful 64, 68 and 72 Sports Motor Yacht models. Among the key sports motor yacht design elements are a foredeck that transforms from tender storage to sunlounge, a sports cockpit, an all-weather mezzanine seating area that affords alfresco dining and entertainment, a stately three-sided glass-enclosed flybridge, and a fullbeam master stateroom as centrepiece of a three-stateroom, twin-bathroom accommodation plan – all in a hull measuring 15.4m in length. “Our sports motor yacht design is in a league of its own, as they bring many different yacht designs together for the first time in one yacht. A Riviera SMY has the attributes of a passage maker, pilothouse, motor yacht, and convertible sports fish, all in one. “The new 50 SMY has considerable internal volume for its size, with multiple living areas and a tremendous amount of practicality and versatility,” Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst says of the 50 SMY. Sydney Australia couple Darrel and Linda Hall were quick to preorder a new 50 SMY ahead of its formal announcement, one of many purchasers to do so off the plan. She will be their fifth Riviera in the past 10 years. “We wanted to go to an enclosed flybridge,” Darrel explains. “We go boating with our kids, who are both 19. They bring along friends, so the extra

The flybridge pampers its occupants in complete comfort while being open to the extended awning – strata glass clears can then fully seal this area. An optional aft helm is available for convenience when fishing. From here, the captain can summon the choice of either Volvo Penta IPS or MAN V-drive propulsion. The proven and highly efficient power and drive options are twin diesel Volvo Penta IPS 950 (533kW/725HP) or twin diesel MAN i6-800 (588kW/800HP). Both deliver smooth, strong-mid-range thrust and top speeds of over 30 knots. The Riviera 50 Sports Motor Yacht will have her official premiere in late August 2020 and will debut at Fort Lauderdale International Boat show in October and the Sanctuary Cove Boating Festival in November. TUFF 540
BUILT BOATS ANNOUNCES THE TUFF 540 Built Boats has created the new Tuff 540 for fishing enthusiasts.
T
HE TUFF 540 is a 5.4-meter-long hardtop powerboat designed and built-in from 15mm-thick carboninfused HDPE which the company brand Tuff-plate. An excellent boatbuilding material, Tuff-plate floats, resists harsh chemicals and marine growth and has a carbon footprint approximately five times smaller than aluminium plate. The body of the Tuff 540 is filled with
hundreds of so-called red cells— small, air-filled pockets that not only make the material shock and sound absorbent but also give it added buoyancy. This also makes the vessel robust, quiet and unsinkable. With, its large foam side fenders, spacious stand-on rear fishing platform, and wide sit-on side decks, the Tuff 540 makes the perfect fishing boat. After a hard day’s fishing, there’s
no need to hose her down because Tuff-plate built boats are not affected by saltwater, fish guts, and any of the other harsh chemicals you’re likely to encounter at sea. Managing director Matt Gibson says: “The Tuff 540, puts innovation in the hands of the fisherman.” www.builtboats.co.nz

Northrop said enquiries for new Maritimo’s were above pre Covid-19 levels. He said with boat show cancellations Maritimo’s company employed team in the Americas were adopting marketing strategies which saw them showcasing boats with smaller VIP events and showings for targeted customers around various cities and ports. “Our promotional mantra has been ‘don’t worry about boat shows being cancelled we will bring the boats to you’,” he said. ITH AN ENVIABLE REPUTATION for designing and building extremely high-quality bespoke vessels, the new 770amph, Amphibious Convertible sport fisher is an outstanding example of not only the company’s design capabilities but also their workmanship. With a new line up in design also comes a new name. Fenton Marine will be handling the custom sport fishers and cruisers with the 770amph being the smallest in the range. Fenton Marine has a number of boats in build, with a 810 enclosed hardtop to start construction early 2021, plus there are a 950 and 1100 on the drawing board. Managing Director Nicholas Fenton says that the 770 is being built for a Kiwi owner and is one of the highest speced boats they have ever created. In fact, Nicholas says it is arguably the highest speced amphibious boat ever built, anywhere and that he already has had a lot of interest from potential clients. “Local customers enjoy our products but found our current Tino line up to be more focused for USA and Australia warmer climates, so hence the new range of enclosed and semi enclosed boats. “Fenton Marine will was born from listening to a number of customers and that allowed us to design designing boats specifically for them”, says Nicholas. for them. The equipment list for the 8.2m walkaround design includes a Quick gyro, quadruple Raymarine MFD screens, Flexiteak flooring, Lithium batteries, with a Mercury 300 V8 outboard on the transom. The plate alloy hull is topped with a grp cabin top complete with a carbon fibre reinforced roof. This is electronically collapsible so the owner can lower the overall height on the wheels to 2.1m. The hull is painted in a custom metallic Byron blue with pearl, and it all sits on a Tectrax amphibious system. www.tino-marine.co.nz

The OXE300, derives its power from a 3-liter 6 cylinder bi-turbo automotive diesel engine. It produces 300hp at the propeller at 4200 -4400 engine rpm, and 680NM (502ft-lb) of torque at the crankshaft at 1750rpm (more than 1000NM (740ft-lb) at the propeller). These are torque numbers that are previously unheard of in the outboard industry and that provides end user massive bollard pulling power as well as fast whole shot acceleration. To meet commercial customer demands the OXE Diesel has been designed with ease of maintenance and service in mind. All service points for daily maintenance checks are located in the front of the engine to make service and maintenance as easy and straight forward, even in the harshest of conditions. PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE
The OXE 300 significantly reduces the emissions compared to petrol fueled outboard standards. Based on performance tests, the OXE 300 consumes up to 40% less fuel compared to a 300 hp petrol fueled outboard. Carbon dioxide are reduced by more than 35%, carbon monoxide by more than 99% and combined hydrocarbons and NOx by more than 70%. This reduction significantly contributes to a reduced environmental impact. The reduced fuel consumption and increased efficiency also increase the operational range with 60%. The unrivalled torque and endurance of the OXE300 open up new markets, new vessels and even more end users. From transportation barges built for harbour work, carrying heavy loads, to governmental applications such as coastguard or search and rescue in which speed and range are essential. OXE Marine AB commenced production of the OXE300, in May. After passing rigorous quality tests, the first units have now been shipped to customers. The production of OXE300 will ramp up and move to new production facility in July. www.powerequipment.co.nz

STOP PRESS
C R U I S I N G M AT T E R S with Laurie Cranfield
At the time of deadline Auckland was back in Lockdown 3 for two weeks, so that meant no boating. Hopefully by the time you read this we are allowed back on the water
Unrestricted Cruising resumes in New Zealand When New Zealand moved to lockdown Level 1 on 14 May we became one of the few countries to allow unrestricted cruising once again, while the Australian situation continues to vary by state with some restrictions still in place.
M
ORE RECENTLY SEVERAL OTHER COUNTRIES, mostly in the
Med, Caribbean and South Pacific have followed suit, but there are various restrictions in place relating to isolation, quarantine and screening. For example Fiji has opened Nadi’s Port Denerau, but visiting crews must have had a minimum of 14 days quarantine at sea, have tested negative for covid-19 before departure to Fiji and be screened on arrival. Most Australasian cruisers owning vessels overseas have chosen to forgo this year’s cruising because of confusion about regulations, difficulties booking return travel and the need to quarantine on return. There is also a general concern that circumstances can change very rapidly and cause major issues for those in the wrong place at the wrong time. We continue to enjoy cruising aboard our Salthouse 52, Rapport and since purchase in late November have logged 50 nights aboard, despite staying off the water during lockdown Levels 3 and 4. We’ve spoken to several cruisers who went out to Waiheke, Great Barrier, Kawau and the Bay of Islands during lockdown and while most of them were approached by police none of them were required to return home or stop cruising, so it seems the only real issue would have been a question mark over insurance cover. Our most recent trip has been eight nights in early June to Waiheke’s “bottom end”. We arrive aboard at Hobsonville marina with our friends Frank and Marie on a dismal Saturday morning and head to Westhaven to refuel. We mainly use the flybridge helm and after berthing at the fuel dock and going below I notice the bilge pump warning light activated at

the lower helm. After lifting our bilge hatches I find sea water coming in sufficiently to activate the pumps. At this point we have no idea where the water is coming from and as a precaution contact Coastguard in case additional pumps are needed and it turns out Paul, the Coastguard skipper is also a marine surveyor. We can’t definitively find the source of the leak, but Paul finds a loose hose clamp on the outlet side of one the bilge pumps and we can see some water back flowing into the bilge. After we tighten the hose clamp the leak stops and we clear all of the water from the bilge – problem solved right? Well, no. We refuel and depart for Waiheke with a bilge hatch left open to monitor the situation. After about ten minutes Frank appears telling me there’s sea water in the bilge again. Damnation or words to that effect are said as we head back to moor alongside the fuel berth to have another look. We agree the problem must be related to the engines as there was no water ingress when they weren’t running. Sure enough we find the port “dripless” shaft seal’s plastic water lubrication fitting has broken and water intended for lubrication is going into the bilge. Frank suggests a temporary repair using Selleys “KneadIt” fast-setting epoxy putty, usable in wet conditions (every cruising vessel should carry a tube or two of this) and 30 minutes later the repair is complete. By now it’s late Saturday afternoon and with a gale warning in place and heavy rain predicted we decide to spend the night back on our marina monitoring the repair and awaiting better conditions. Two days later we head off for an excellent six days cruising with our temporary repair lasting well. One highlight was drift fishing in the Firth PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE
of Thames finding plenty of hungry snapper at most times of day and states of tide. Another was Waihehe’s Mawhitipana Bay, better known as Palm Beach where set back from the beach’s eastern end is the delightful and relaxing Arcadia cafe reminiscent of the rustic tavernas we enjoyed during our Med cruising and having a superette next door selling most supplies. After our return I organise repairs to our shaft seal. I’ve never been a big fan of dripless shaft seals with a rubber bellows because if the bellows fails the consequences can be catastrophic. However to be fair I’m told they’re widely used commercially. Our shaft seals are about six years old and the manufacturer recommends installing a replacement service kit after this time. It turns out that for not much more than the cost of the service kits we can instal the very robust and low maintenance Kiwi shaft seals, so we go down that path. These seals incorporate an electronic alarm to detect a high seal temperature – normally caused by an issue with the supply of cooling sea water. I’m also unhappy with our bilge pump monitoring system and instal a loud audible alarm so we’ll know immediately a pump is activated and can then turn the alarm off while we check its cause. Hopefully these problems are now resolved, but no doubt others will follow!

FISHING with Bruce Duncan (aka Captain Swish)
THE RIGHT WAY TO SMOKE FISH Now boys and girls let’s all sit quietly and read the “true story” of how smoking food evolved.
S
moking food goes way back to the good old days well before daily limit bags, DOC, Twig and Tweet, the RMA or MPI. Back then dinosaur donging was not only for sport but for feeding the clan. Heading out from the cave in the early morning mist with dongy knockers in hand the boys would spend half the day tracking just the right size dino, not too big or too small it had to be just right size to be tender and easy enough to drag back to the cave. The most prized dino was one that was blind called a Didyouthinkhesawus. Short, fat but very dangerous as even though he could not see, he had a very keen sense of smell and hell of a set of fangs. The only way to tackle such a beast was to slowly sneak up from downwind and give it a hell of a whack fair and square between its ears. Donged dead and dragged back to the cave took a bit of effort, so it was just left next to the fire. Now it was only right and proper that the boys would relax and have a couple or three rumbos as one is want to do after a strenuous day of hunting and gathering. 44
|
SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2020
|
As is the case on the odd occasion, the boys over stoked the fire brought out the guitar had way too many rumbos and passed out. Strangely I have heard that this has even been known to occur on the odd occasion even today. Waking up hungover to a smoked filled cave and a hell of a hunger they were aware of a mighty fine smell wafting from the slightly burnt smoked covered donged dino. Tasting a bit off the left rump, it turned out that slowly cooked and smoked donged dino not only tasted delicious but also the best hangover cure. Over time they donged all manner of beasts and fish, fine-tuning the smoking methods to cook and preserve their catch. Have you ever wondered why the fish caught in winter are harder to skin and bone? Reason being, their body fat content is way higher in winter than in summer, which makes it stick to the blade of the knife. It’s this higher fat content in the flesh that makes for perfect quality fish to smoke. An average size snapper filleted will feed two people whereas the same size fish smoked will feed four people done in PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE
a pie. The bonus is the flesh from the smoked fish heads is a stunning base for seafood chowder. TYPES OF SMOKERS Fish smokers’ range in size and price from the quick and easy basic single tray box unit, to fully auto multirack units or as I use, a gas-fired homemade unit. Smaller single tray portable smokers are perfect for a quick hot smoke and great for the apartment, but also ideal for taking on the boat to take ashore. The beauty of compact, fully automated multirack smokers is they take away the hassle of having to continually check the heat and volume of the smoke of a homemade smoker such as I use. Being so easy to use, they are perfect for smoking the likes of mushrooms, bacon, chicken and meats. CARE FOR THE CATCH The moment the fish is landed, ike [kill] it to prevent it thrashing about bruising itself and any other fish in the bin, cover the fish in ice which instantly chills and sets the flesh. Firstly, gut the fish, cut off the head

and remove the gill plate, rinse off and put in the fridge. With a sharp knife split the fish down one side close to the backbone. Wipe off any scales, then evenly rub both the flesh and frame in a brine mix, made of a fifty/fifty mixture a brown sugar and salt [ do not use iodised salt]. Fold the fish back onto itself and then wrap it tightly in newspaper and place in the fridge to chill overnight. When ready to smoke, remove the newspaper open up the fish to wipe off any excess salt and brown sugar mix. In most smokers, you lay the fillets flat on the racks, whereas my old fashioned traditional smoker I prefer to hang the fish. The true traditional cold smoke method required ten to twelve hours to cook and extract the moisture which then gave it long shelf life, whereas a hot smoke is quicker depending on the size and thickness of the flesh. Average size snapper takes two to three hours whereas big snapper slabs of kingfish or marlin will take up to five hours. Once smoked, leave the fish to cool and set for a while, which reduces the risk of them falling apart when removed off the racks. I vacuum pack the fish that I am going to freeze to give to friends or keep for a couple of days, as it holds in the moisture and flavour but stops the smell of smoked fish permeating through the house.

CAPTAIN SWISH’S WORLD-FAMOUS
SMOKED FISH PIE 1.
Boil potatoes ready for mashing and hard boil three eggs. Take off the flesh removing any bones and break into small pieces, including the nice brown meat from the backbone. Rather than going to all the hassle of making a white sauce, I use a packet of Maggi seafood soup, as I think it’s tastier than the Maggi fish pie mix.
2.
Finely chop some red onion and slowly sweat it off in olive oil till soft add in the smoked fish plus a hand full of peas while stirring in one and a half cups of milk with the Maggi seafood soup mix.
3.
Keep on a low heat while you mash the potatoes, pour the fish mixer into a shallow dish, chop up and add the hard-boiled eggs.
4.
Evenly spread the mashed potato over the mixer, adding heaps of grated tasty cheese to finish.
5.
Place in preheated oven to heat through then turn on fan grill to brown the cheese.

The flybridge feels just like a second saloon and flows to a rear deck and elevated views.
The Riviera 64 SMY is designed for modern entertaining and living, without sacrificing any on water performance and handling.
Riviera continues to redefine their standards with every new model they release, and the 64 SMY is no exception. Following the success of the 72 & 68 SMYs, the new 64 SMY continues the family heritage on a slightly more compact scale. Once again, Riviera has got it right, and in my opinion, have produced a future classic.

Cover Story
uch has been written about Riviera’s 72/68 Sport Motor Yacht range, and now, with the addition of the 64 SMY, and the yet to be release 50 SMY this stunning series is developing into a real winner for Riviera. For me, they are boats that I simply want to spend more time aboard, be it cruising up the coast or hunkered up in a bay. Dean Horgan, dealer principal of R Marine Flagship, New Zealand distributors for Riviera and Belize, says the 64 SMY has been targeted to a section of the market that is hungry for new product. “There have been many Riviera owners over the years that have had boats in the 18-22m size bracket who are looking for something new, that has the features of a motor yacht, but that would still fit into a 22m marina. “Our clients that have seen the boat are blown away by the internal volume and the big boat feel that they get when they step aboard. It’s a boat that masks its true dimensions and delivers so much more for its size”, says Dean.

Left: Riviera have designed an amazing foredeck space on the 64 SMY. Right: Triple screens and still plenty of space for everything else. Right: The forward master stateroom comes with a private en-suite.
While you might think that the 64 SMY would be simply a scaled-down version of the 68/72 SMYs, there is, in fact, a lot more to it. The hull windows, for example, are entirely different and from what I was told are soon to be the new standard in the larger Sport Motor Yachts. There are a lot of new design cues throughout the boat, such as twin access to the utility space, either from the engine room or the master cabin. Having the extra length to take a washing machine and dryer, toolbox, workbench and a place to store your fishing rods and equipment is excellent. Having the laundry set up and not tucked away in a cupboard is so much better. Riviera can also set it up as a crew cabin, complete with a small bathroom. When Riviera set about designing their SMY series, the main criteria was they had to offer the exhilaration of a sports performance boat with the luxurious comforts of a motor yacht. The legendary performance of existing Riviera sports yachts coupled with the elegant heart of their flybridge motor yachts has unquestionably been harmoniously integrated. Elegant, superbly comfortable and with a performance that exceeds expectations.
FUNCTION LUXURY Behind the elegant and contemporary lines, the Riviera 64 SMY is a luxury motor yacht that optimises onboard space and offers functionality from bow to stern with multiple entertainment, living and storage areas. The boat is made up of large defined spaces, that means you don’t have to break your groups up, be it the outside mezzanine, around the saloon dining table, or the flybridge. There is enough area for everyone to be in the same place. I was amazed at just how big all the areas are, and I doubt there is a wasted space anywhere in the boat. The cockpit, for example, is designed to suit the casual line-fisherman, but there is still space for a game chair. There are tackle drawers built into the bbq module, plus a freezer for your bait. Twin transom doors open to the boarding platform which can be fixed or with a high/low option. The centre of the transom can be configured with either a live bait tank or storage space, plus there is a large in-floor wet-locker. 48

Left: A fisherman’s cockpit and a modern mezzanine entertaining area perfectly splits the outside spaces. Above: The 64 SMY saloon is impressive and makes you feel comfortable, relaxed and at home.
It’s a few steps up to the mezzanine deck, which flows into the aft galley and beyond to the saloon. Enclosed with clears for all-weather boating, it is a fabulous socialising and dining space. Riviera refers to it as the entertainment centre of the boat, and I would have to agree. Seating is split between twin L-shape loungers, with the port side folding out to a large sun pad. Step inside, and you are met by an ultra-modern galley, with an array of high-quality stainless appliances and Corian surfaces. It is the central hub between the mezzanine and the saloon. A large hopper window opens to the mezzanine and like everywhere else in the 64 SMY it is another very social area. While the 64 SMY is a full production boat, you do have some options on how you want your boat to look. Fabric choices are many, and when
it comes to timber, the choices are Walnut, Oak or Cherry in either satin or gloss. Over the years, Riviera has refined and perfected every aspect of their designs and none more so than the saloon. No matter what boat I am on, it’s always the saloon layout that for me sets the mood of the boat. The 64 SMY saloon is impressive and makes you feel comfortable, relaxed and at home. Reading, dining or entertaining friends, it projects a warm ambience that is infectious to anyone fortunate enough to be aboard. Opposite the galley, under the internal staircase to the flybridge is a wet bar, complete with a twin-level wine fridge. The 64 SMY also comes with a portside pantograph door to give easy access to the side and foredeck.
The guest stateroom to port has twin berths that can, with the push of a button, slide together to form one double. This cabin shares a combination en-suite/day head, which is used by the starboard guest cabin if you go for the classic four cabin layout. The starboard guest cabin has two adult sized Pullman style berths and a private entrance door. If you only want three cabins, then the space is configured as a small day lounge.
THREE OR FOUR STATEROOMS
FABULOUS FLYBRIDGE
There is some flexibility when it comes to the accommodation plan, with either a three or four stateroom layout. Both offer a full-beam master, with an en-suite complete with large shower cubicle, handcrafted vanity cabinet and solid surface benchtop. In the 68 SMY it’s where you can also access the utility room. Storage is abundant throughout the master stateroom, with cedar-lined hanging lockers complete with shoe racks and a built-in safe for your valuables. The queen size bed is flanked by bedside tables with grain matched leather inlays and a polished timber drawer unit to starboard and chaise lounge to port. An array of LED lighting overhead and massive side windows support the welcoming atmosphere. The forward VIP cabin is also retained in both layouts, and like the master stateroom has its own en-suite. Features include a walkaround queen size bed, twin overhead hatches, cedar lined hanging lockers and stylish glass hull panels.
An internal staircase leads to the flybridge, which feels just like a second saloon, complete with its own rear deck and elevated views. There are two distinct areas, the fully enclosed flybridge and the outside aft deck area. Inside there is a wet bar with fridge, L shape lounger, with matching ottoman and a forward settee. The helm is super impressive with a trio of 24” Raymarine glass screens, comprehensive coverage of instruments, switches and controls, plus a pair of ultra comfortable helm seats. Above, a Webasto sliding sunroof allows you that open air feel, plus there are sliding side windows for extra natural airflow. Outside on the upper deck, there is another wet bar, large lounger and even a module to stow the liferaft. There is also a ladder should you need to access the top of the hardtop.

DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL As the saying goes, the devil is in the detail, and when it comes to Riviera that starts at the keel. The company pride themselves on producing real blue water boats that are designed to handle some of the worst seas around our coastline. Using an experienced team of in-house designers, Riviera has perfected how a boat should perform in rough water. That DNA started back in the 1980s when Riviera produced their first of more than 5000 boats and has been tweaking and improving ever since. The Riviera 64 SMY has been designed and engineered to deliver the ultimate in blue-water cruising, combining the agility and performance of a sprint boat, with the cruising mastery of a small motor yacht. The 21.23m x 5.80m hull benefits from the proven engineering advances of the Riviera V-drive system, tunnel hull design and a lower shaft angle, that aids stability and enhances efficiency and performance. Dry displacement is 42,000kg. Standard power is twin MAN turbo V8 1300hp, with optional V12 1550hp, diesels. Both deliver quiet, effortless and smooth acceleration giving the 64 SMY a top speed of 30 knots with the V8 1300s and 34 knots with the upgraded V12 1550s. Our 64 SMY was fitted with the V12 1550s (Aud$200,000 upcharge), and I got to run it on Auckland Harbour on a calm winter’s day. Best cruise (80%) was around 26 knots @ 1950 rpm, which returned 207lph per engine and a range of around 365nm. Most noticeable was how quiet it was on the flybridge with a decibel reading around 71 dB. Even in the saloon, the lack of engine noise was quite noticeable. Driving the 64 SMY on the calm waters of the Hauraki Gulf, was effortless. It’s quick to plane and has a shallow bow attitude as it pulls through the rev range. Coupled with a Seakeeper Gyro and Humphree Interceptors, the angle of heel in tight turns is negligible. The Twin Disc EJS propulsion system with the joystick and the thrusters is so user-friendly you can manoeuvre the 64 SMY as easily as a trailer boat. Overall another superb new model from Riviera that compliments the growing Sport Motor Yacht series. Designed for modern entertaining and living, without sacrificing any on water performance and handling, the 64 Sport Motor Yacht certainly lives up to its name.

The Hutchwilco Coastal flare pack is ideal for trailer boats.
The Hutchwilco gear bag is great to stow all your safety equipment.
From deck hardware to bilge pumps, cockpit lights to floor coverings, a trailer boat is always in need of some new gadget or fixture. It may be practical, it may be cosmetic, but mostly it improves the boat you have and your pride in owning it. This article is about spending your money on the items that are essential or very important, and then buy the discretionary toys afterwards! It’s also about buying quality and the adage…you pay for what you get is never so poignant as with marine hardware and fittings. The secret is to approach the matter in a prioritised fashion, beginning firstly with the all-important safety features. Items such as lifejackets, flares (kept in a watertight container), and marine radio and EPIRB (if going offshore), are ‘must-have’ items. The first three should be mandatory in every boat, and an EPIRB is a wise purchase, especially if you go offshore.

ex-the dealer, repetitive assembly and production can sometimes equate to a cheaper end product. There are plenty of quality stainless fittings available on the market and can be replaced if you are unsure of the ones on the boat. Might be a good time to upgrade to the new style flush-mounted cleats or a telescopic ladder on your old boat. You should also address those general convenience features applicable to the vessel’s predominant application. Forget the fluffy dice, electric chairs, electric aerials, windscreen wipers and other such gadgetry, what we are now looking for are features that are practical and will ensure your vessel is just that much more user-friendly.
Lifejackets are a must have, especially if you have children aboard.
Anchors & Anchoring Next, you should address the anchoring equipment, which includes appropriate (to boat length and weight) deck gear such as cleats, fairlead, bollard, and capstan, and anchor, warp and chain. The latter comes with your safety kit in most states anyway, but make sure it is adequate for your requirements. Don’t look upon it as a means of appeasing the authorities, look upon it as a means of one day maybe saving your life. And please remember the golden rule with chain – you should have a suitable weight chain – and it must be twice the length of your vessel if you don’t ever want your anchor to drag. Before we go too much further into the set-up, it is pertinent at this point perhaps to mention the ‘packaged’ boat, available nowadays from a number of the more professional dealers. They will invariably set a vessel up, whether it be a small tinnie or a larger bluewater offshore boat, with the right equipment aboard to ensure safe boating in all conditions. And, because it is done ex-factory or

Having the right anchor for the bottom structure is a bonus.
User Friendly Having looked after the basics of your package now is the time to take a look at some essentials that will help make life aboard just that much more convenient. A lockable, water-tight (if possible) glove box or locker for a start, is a must for the storage of mobile phones, keys or valuables. A tool kit of some description is sensible (how many times have you wanted a pair of pliers or a screwdriver), as is a simple little waterproof first aid kit, both of which can sensibly also be stowed in this locker/glovebox. A USB port or a 12V cigarette lighter alongside your purpose-designed marine ‘accessories’ switch panel, is another sensible option that will power remote searchlight, lantern, or any other electrical equipment, or charge or run your mobile phone. The above are essential items, but there are many other creature comforts such as drink holders, a compass (providing you are prepared to learn how to use it properly) and grab handles (you can never have enough of these, spread around your vessel). PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE
Hard to go fishing without a bait board.
Next up we should be looking at all the options available – directly applicable to the vessel’s intended predominant usage. Sensibility suggests you should only fit what is required. It is a waste of money fitting a bait-board, for instance, if you don’t fish! And more important than wastage of money, every ‘extra’ adds more weight to your boat – weight that equates to higher fuel costs. These items often fall into the category of discretionary purchases, and heading the list, providing you still have money left in your budget, is an electronics package of some description. Here the options are seemingly endless, as there is a multitudinous array of depth sounders, MFDs, GPSs, entertainment systems, and the like. A word of warning here – if you are at all confused, give the manufacturers of the respective equipment a call. Their advice is free and can save you a lot of dollars.
The Right Use It is helpful to categorise usage into the various pursuits such as fishing, water-skiing, diving, cruising, or whatever else it is you will

predominantly use your boat for. If it is skiing, you will need to address the aspects (and positioning) of a suitable ski pole arrangement, storage for the skis, vests and ropes, and items such as a rearview mirror, rear-facing seating, and an accurate speedometer. If it is cruising you are into and don’t have a hardtop then a canopy and even side and rear ‘curtains’ have to be considered. If it’s a new boat, you can always ask the dealer to add one to the package and if an older boat, there are plenty of marine upholsterers that will fit one for you. There are also kits that you can retrofit yourself, which
are ideal for smaller open tinnies. For your cruising vessel, you may well require more or different seating configurations. It might be that back-to-back, bucket, pedestal, or king and queen arrangements, adjustable or nonadjustable, would better suit. If you want to change your seating arrangement, then there are plenty of retailers around the country that will sell you what you want. Retrofitting is not difficult and can certainly transform your boat. A comfortable helm seat can undoubtedly make a difference. If you are using your boat for family cruising, you may want to add a portable or fully plumbed head, as well as some cooking facilities. There are two options, a marine BBQ; which are generally rod holder mounted or a small galley unit; which according to available space can be separate or

Fishing Overload If there is a multitude of options available in the way of electronics, then they pale into insignificance when it comes to the number of fishing extras available, for the serious fisherman. This is where you can seriously blow the budget and weight constraints. Storage is perhaps one of the most under-rated aspects here, for fishermen require plenty of working space. Everything, therefore, must have a home (applicable in any situation really, not just fishing), and into play come such items as rod-holders, rocket launchers, and side-panel or overhead (depending on boat size) rod racks. First and foremost, in any vessel but most importantly in a fishing vessel, the aspect of storage must be addressed! Accessibility to the transom is of great importance, so make sure any rear

seating is removable if it impedes access to the bait station. The transom isn’t there just to hold the topsides together; by sheer coincidence, it very conveniently also houses the bait stations, tuna tubes and live-bait tanks! Live-bait tanks and bait stations, of course, come in many different forms, depending on the respective manufacturer, yet they remain a very personal facet of a fishing vessel. Depending on how committed you are to the pursuit, tanks can vary in size, and the associated re-cycling pumps too vary in size as well as efficiency, according to the type of bait held. Bait stations, however, offer up the most variations, from the simple polyethylene lid of the live-bait/

wet fish storage facility, up to multi-faceted arrangements featuring pumped water, tackle storage, bait storage and bait preparation areas. Don’t forget that you can also go all out and bolt an electric trolling motor to the foredeck, but before you do make sure it will work with your existing bow rail. You may have to get a new one made especially to work around the trolling motor. One of the biggest annoyances, especially in a fishingorientated vessel, is water damage to ‘essential’ items such as batteries, filters, oil tanks, and in some instances in older engines, trim pumps. A simple shelf arrangement, up off the floor level, allows better access to this equipment – while at the same time keeping it away from fish scales, dirt and grime. Many new vessels now have this feature.

The engine well area varies dramatically in configuration from manufacturer to manufacturer. Still, if it isn’t fitted as standard, it is a good idea (if the option is available) to include some form of boarding platform for either side of the engine. The humble boarding ladder is another contentious item, with many deciding that as they are not into diving or the like, they won’t bother with the option. Every boat should

have one as you will be surprised how many times you will use it – boarding from a beach, or boarding while the vessel is on the trailer. Providing that is, that the ladder is substantial enough, and ensuring too that the grab handle theme is continued through to this boarding area! Make sure the ladder has enough rungs too, especially if you are into diving, skiing or swimming around the boat. A ladder that drops just below the surface is nowhere as easy to use as one that extends well down in the water. A short version will suffice if all you want it for is climbing onto the boat from the beach or land, otherwise go for the long option. Other sensible user-friendly features aimed at enhancing the ‘efficiency’ of anglers include tackle boxes that recess into seat bases, recessed EPIRB and fire extinguisher mounting points at an appropriately sited-place and remote ‘bin’ seats. Practical also are wet-fish bins able to be recessed into the floor, exterior anchor storage mounts (for attachment to the bowrail), recessed yet open lifejacket storage lockers (so they don’t get damp Hi Tech Plastics produce and ultimately rot), spray customised live bait tanks from 15 to 300 litres.

deflector curtains should your intended vessel be of the centre-console configuration. Hatches are another accessory that you might like to consider, especially on older boats. While modern boats usually always have a deck hatch, many boats from the 19709s-1980s had no forward hatch, so anchoring was not a simple chore. Retrofitting a deck hatch is a simple DIY job as long as you do it right. Sealing the hatch on the deck is probably the most crucial factor and also getting one that proportionally fits the deck space. There are many more bits and bobs you can fit to your boat that are either practical or just look good. Everyone has their own idea of what they want and what they need, so get shopping!

Deck Protection - Faux Teak Older trailer boats often have an antiskid pattern on the floor or a sturdy material like Nautilex or perhaps carpet. However, in recent years faux teak has become the flooring of choice, and with more than half a dozen brands, you have plenty of options. It is not cost-effective to put genuine teak decks on a trailer boat, and it also adds considerable weight. So, if you like the look and feel of a teak deck, then you may want to look at the many manmade teak deck alternatives. You can have the flooring custom-designed for your boat and even drop in things like the boat name or a fish measure. Faux teak is extremely tough and durable and well suited to both aluminium and fibreglass boats. In the Nov-Dec issue of PPM we will continue this series on Accessorising Your Trailer Boat with a more detailed look at Faux Teak.

hen it comes to an aluminium boat, the question is painted or unpainted. There are the purists who regard covering the raw aluminium with anything more than a clear protective coating such as Nyalic is an abomination. They should be kept in their natural state, and any attempt to bring them into line with their fibreglass counterparts, such as soft curves and gracious lines should be avoided at all costs. While there are still some that follow that maxim, the market has predominantly changed to full painted or even wrapped hulls, especially when looking at boats over 6m. Stylish lines, curved screens and softened edges are now the norm. No longer does a hardtop have to look like it was an afterthought. They are now very much part of the form of the boat.

Clockwise: Sorry, no space for anything else.
DNA 801 CUSTOM
The Webasto sunroof really is a great feature. Dining for two. The fishing cockpit and aft platform are covered in U-Deck. The compact galley is more than enough for a boat this size.
One company that has taken the appearance of their boats to the ultimate level is Nelson based DNA Boats, and at the recent Tairua Boat Show, they presented one of the finest examples of an alloy boat I have seen in years. The all-new 801 Custom is an 8.1m hardtop that makes a statement about the company’s ability and craftsmanship. This is truly an alloy boat that you need to give the ‘tap’ test to see that’s not fibreglass. However, being so pedantic about the finish of the boat has come at a price. Jason Elvines, the designer and builder of the DNA brand, says that with the countless hours extra in fully fairing all the welds and then painting, there is about a $40,000 upcharge on the standard unpainted boat. Price as tested for our Mercury 260 TDI sterndrive powered DNA 801 Offshore, on a tandem braked alloy trailer was $335,000. “I wanted the 801 Custom to be a real show stopper and present a boat to potential clients that exposed what we can do, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the reaction we got at the Tairua Boat Show”, says Jason. Jason commented that he built the first 801 Custom for his use, to replace his 730. He needed a bigger overnighter that provided more comfort and space for his family of five.

SAME DNA The 801 has its roots, or should I say DNA in the DNA 821, which we reviewed a few years ago. The 801 retains essentially the same hull, albeit shorter, with the same size cabin, but a different cockpit layout. Where the 821 reviewed was outboard powered, the first 801 is fitted with a Mercruiser 260 TDI V6 diesel sterndrive with Bravo 3 stern leg. Top speed with the Mercruiser is around 35 knots. There is also a single or twin outboard option with a recommended maximum of around 300hp. With an engine box extending into the cockpit, the available working space for fishing is decreased, but DNA has countered that by providing an extra-large platform aft of the transom. This comes complete with high rails, which, unlike the traditional pipe construction, has been manufactured from 12mm flat plate. Very different, with a retro style that works great. Access is provided either side of the engine box, which also houses
the seriously large bait station. This is removable and comes with the mandatory rod and knife holders. The engine box, like the rest of the boat, is finished with U-Deck and makes another great seat or a place to put the tackle boxes when fishing. The steps in the walkthroughs hinge up, to stop any water sloshing into the cockpit when you be backing-up on a big fish. They are also ideal places for a live bait tank. The cockpit is all about fishing, and since Jason and his team at DNA are all keen fishos, they know what works. Features like deeply recessed spaces under the coamings, extended side shelves for rod storage, flat side decks with strategically placed rod holders and side lockers large enough to take dive bottles are there because they know they work. I liked the fact that the 801 Custom has an outside head/shower and it wasn’t plumbed in under a forward squab. The curved design gives you a little more room to move inside when having a shower and takes up less cockpit space. Opposite is a corner sink unit complete with hot and cold freshwater, a gas califont and deck wash hose.
BRIGHT & BREEZY The wheelhouse is sensational, with an air of unexpected comfort that you don’t always find in a boat this size. Soft fabrics cover all remains of the alloy construction, with dark leather accentuated with the U-Deck faux teak flooring. The hull coverings are all backed with 7mm foam which helps retain internal temperatures as well as acts as a noise barrier. The high profile curved screen is broken only by a single central mullion, so visibility from the helm is unimpeded. Fresh air and ventilation come via the large Webasto manual sunroof and sliding side windows. However, if you are boating in the colder climes, then you can simply close everything up and stoke-up the gas heater. The layout of the wheelhouse is similar to the 821, although the access to the forward accommodation space has been increased. The U-shape seating doubles as two generous berths, with an optional infill. There is storage under the squabs as well as in wide side trays, and like the wheelhouse, everything is fully lined, presenting a warm, appealing area. Wheelhouse seating is provided with twin swivelling bucket seats forward a single port side bench seat and a removable bench seat along the rear wall. Swing the forward passenger seat around, and you have a generous dining area for a couple of people. The table can be folded out of the way when not required. All extra available space in the dining area has been taken with drawers, plus there is further storage under the wheelhouse floor. To starboard is a small galley with, fridge, gas cooker and storage, with the helm forward. DNA has certainly maximised the available dash space. Centre stage is a Simrad NNSEv02, 16” screen, AP24 autopilot, Vessel View 7 Mercury engine management display, plus trim tab, winch and bow thruster controls. Overhead you can control your sounds from the Fusion RA70 and keep in touch with other boat owners on a Simrad RS20 VHF. What a difference the thruster made when we brought the boat back onto the trailer with a strong tide ripping past the Tairua Marina ramp. A great addition to a single engine trailer boat of this size.
BUILT TOUGH Like the 821, and in fact all DNA boats, construction is based around an integral hull framing system created by Jason using CNC cut interlocking full depth full length frames creating a rigid dependable system. This along with CNC profile cut boats, bring about fine tolerances and perfectly symmetrical PowerboatMagazine.co.nz

and well-balanced boats. The 801 is designed to perform in moderate to rough water and comes with a well tested hull design. I have run several DNA models from the 8m right down to their smaller 4m models, and I would have to say no matter what the size, it is hard to fault the ride and handling. The 18 deg hull feels stiff on the water, and although I never got to experience the 801 in the rough, I am sure it would account very well. I know the 821 does, so why should the 801 be any different. With the MerCruiser 260, the best cruise speed is around 25 knots @ 3000 rpm, which returns a fuel figure of 1.3 lpnm and a range of 200nm. WOT saw a speed of 33.6 knots @ 4020 rpm and a fuel figure of 1.6 lpnm and a range of 160 nm. I certainly put the DNA 801 Custom as one of the class leaders in the 8m aluminium hardtop category. Finish, style and performance I give it 10 out of 10.

HE 6800 kg, Herley Electric Powercat 3400 is powered by a 60 kWh Li-Ion battery bank which runs two 100kW electric motors, driving the power through shafts, with the propellers set into tunnels of the displacement hull. A planetary gearbox reduction @ 3:1 produces a maximum shaft rpm of 1500 . It also boasts a 120kW variable speed generator. This generator provides a Hybrid range extension feature and the option of driving the motors directly without the use of the batteries. The hybrid control and operating system has been developed in house and is designed in a scalable format to accommodate future builds of all sizes. The brushless permanent magnet electric motors have a 100kw peak and 60kw continuous output. The engines are liquid-cooled (50/50 water/glycol liquid cooling), with an operating voltage of 350v DC, maximum efficiency of 95% and weighing just 50 kg. The hybrid package also comes with a DSP-controlled inverter with sine wave drive. The battery bank has a nominal 350v, with a 176Ah capacity, 61.6kWh and weighs 600 kg. PowerboatMagazine.co.nz

HERLEY ELECTRIC 3400 PART 1 Liquid-cooled (50/50 water/glycol liquid cooling), they have an integrated BMS (Battery management system) plus safety features such as a Redundant BMS, Thermal propagation, Protection between individual cells, rupture disc with venting exhaust and DNV-GL Class approval. The new Herley Electric 3400 uses 1.89kw maximum output solar panels with a charge time of approx. 36 daylight hours. The boat has a shore power connection which will fully charge the battery bank between 1.5hrs and 6 hours, depending on the amperage of the shore supply. A drive control management system connects and controls the electric motors, throttle, battery bank, generator engine, the cooling system, shore power and onboard charging. It also provides real-time data on every system component. The Hybrid package includes, what Herley refer to as the range extender, which is based around a 200hp Hyundai Seasall diesel coupled to a permanent magnet brushless electric motor. This produces 220kw maximum power or 150kw continuous and operates at 350V DC. The Herley 3400 carries 630 litres of diesel. Designed by Roger Hill, in collaboration with Herley Boats, the 3400 Powercat has a projected cruising range of over 1300 nautical miles on a single 630-litre tank, thanks to a hull form that has been specifically designed to create minimal underwater drag. The Control system is designed to provide a user interface that provides the operator with a familiar boating setting. A simple throttle to manoeuvre the vessel, and through the touchscreen, you can choose how the boat will consume and regenerate energy. You have the option of four modes of operation with smart features to provide the best experience in each setting. The Primary mode is Silent mode, using battery only as the propulsion choice. Economy Mode uses the battery and the generator at its most efficient power generation. Direct mode, uses the generator only to provided power. Sport mode offers unlimited access to all power availability. The shore charging system is designed to make use of current marina standard sockets/outputs available, so no additional equipment is required to charge the battery bank. You also have the option of removing the ‘range extender’ and expanding the battery bank to offer an electric-only drive train. 68

BUCCANEER 605 EXESS 2004 TO PRESENT DAY
n late 2004 Barry Thompson went to Whangaroa to review the first Buccaneer 605 Exess, a boat that in the past sixteen years has sold well for this Hamilton based builder. While it is still a current model for Buccaneer, there are some significant changes from that first boat. While the hull, decks and inner liner have been retained Buccaneer have added a small bait tank into the transom step, which requires an internal moulding being fitted during deck fit out before join of hull and deck Originally floor covering options were carpet as standard with either Flexiteak or Nautilex as an option. Currently carpet is still standard or as an option of U Dek 6mm brushed in either teak/

black or winter grey/ steel grey. This adds to the A.C.S.T by integrating the full fibreglass liners with fibreglass centre floors which makes up the kit. There are now different trim options including using cloth squabs or option of outdoor canvas in the cabin and a different liner colour with almond as standard or Ivory or Titanium as an option. Buccaneer have added a Sportsman model to compliment the 605 Exess. This comes without the coaming upholstery panel and rear hockey seat and seat leaving a fibreglass panel finish instead of vinyl skirt. The standard seating layout is a single helm pedestal and a back to back. You have the option of twin helm pedestal seats or twin back to back seats.

uccaneer 605 Exess retains the wellproven hull of the 605 Escape, but has been transformed with all new Exess deck appearance. It now completes the Exess styling change for all current Buccaneer models going into the 2005-06 model year. In 2002 Buccaneer launched the first of the Exess models, the 635, at the New Zealand Boat Show. A year later it was followed by the 730 Exess and last year by the 530 Exess. With the 605 Exess, the line-up of current models transformed into the Exess style is now complete. I was given the opportunity to test the prototype of the new 605 Exess, although the only difference between it and the first production model – due for release at the June Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show – is a full inner fibreglass liner. Visually it was as the production boat will be. The scene for our test was the beautifully romantic Whangaroa Harbour and the Cavalli Islands. This is an area that is stepped in history and in 1800 it was estimated there were over 4000 Maoris living around it shores. It spawned towns like Totara North, Waipuna and Whangaroa, which grew from the kauri milling trade. It was also where Zane Grey anchored his mother-ship while he explored the big-game fishing grounds in the north, the Ruahines and the Cavallis. Over time it has become known for events such PowerboatMagazine.co.nz

BUCCANEER 605 EXESS
"More volume in the cockpit without sacrificing any cabin bunk space." as the burning of the Boyd in 1809, the long established Marlin Hotel and more recently the game-fishers iconic base, Kingfish Lodge. But more importantly it is unquestionably one of this country’s best boating areas. Well, enough of the geography and history lesson, what about the boat. The main features of the 605 Exess are its more aggressive appearance with the new Exess deck, yet it still retains soft curves from the bow through to the portofino stern. A big plus over the 605 Escape is the fact that the new 605 will now take a hands-free winch, the same as all of the other Exess models. Our test boat was fitted with a Quick winch and very handy chain counter. The cabin headroom is 45mm higher and there’s a Weaver lockable hatch overhead. A fully lined light tone fabric interior is offset with thick side cushions facing wide side parcel trays. There is further storage in areas under the full-length squabs and even provision for a fully plumbed electric head. A privacy curtain can be fitted across the open bulkhead. Another change over the 605 Esprit is that the helm bulkhead while still essentially in the same position is angled further forward. This gives the appearance of more volume in the cockpit without sacrificing any cabin bunk space. The split dash has the black and white Evinrude instruments spread across an imitation walnut fascia, with a centrally mounted Furuno combo plotter, GPS, sounder below. The BEP switch panel, Quick winch control and Uniden VHF are all within easy reach. 74

Due to the fact the boat will have an inner liner the seating layout is virtually fixed with no options apart from the removable rear double bin seat. There is a large king/ queen to port and a swivelling helmsman bucket seat opposite. The fibreglass bases are both used for storage. Upstands in the cockpit sole guarantee a perfect fit for all seat mouldings. I found the screen still a little low for me as I was looking straight at the top alloy extrusion and handrail when seated. Standing, it’s a different story and not only does the seat base slide well back out of the way, the screen handrail stops well short either side so you don’t end up with bruises on your arm after battling through rough seas. The rigid frame bimini/rocket launcher is also at a good height so there’s enough clearance without being too high. A full set of zip-on clears keep you weather protected should you require it. There is also the bonus of the bimini folding down for those with a height restriction
in their garage. Such is the solid stainless structure of the bimini you can leave it up when towing and it’s also fine to attach the wakeboard towline to it. When you’re on a fishing trip and want as much cockpit space as possible, you can leave the rear bin seat behind. A full width vinyl curtain hides away all the bits under the aft deck and also means there is easy access to the batteries. Rod racks are standard either side and there is provision for a centrally mounted bait board, stainless steel rod holders either side in the teak-capped coamings and a wet locker aft for the bait and berley. A deck wash is another great option to have if you are seriously into your fishing. The transom is very much the same as the 635 Exess, with large boarding platforms either side of the engine. This is also a good area to mount a portable live bait tank if you are that serious about your fishing. The 165-litre fuel tank is fitted in the forward centre section of the cockpit with
the space behind used for a moulded fibreglass wet bin. There is a full-length glass stringer grid and solid foam buoyancy that complies with the CPC flotation standards.
QUIET AND GRUNTY The picturesque waters around the Cavalli Islands provided the ideal surroundings for our test and although the waters were reasonably calm, the Buccaneer 605 Exess performed faultlessly. It’s always hard to fully evaluate a boat in calm water but having had considerable boating experience with the 605 Escape I can assure you that it’s one of the better boats for its size in moderate to rough water. Changes made to the deadrise and running surface of the original 605 Executive a number of years ago, when it was relaunched as the 605 Elite and later the 605 Escape transformed the boat’s reputation for great rough water handling. “I couldn’t see what I could do to make it PowerboatMagazine.co.nz

any better, so felt it was best to leave well alone”, said designer Gerry Gerrand. Starting with the right underwater shape is a huge plus and the new 605 Exess, like its predecessors is a boat that doesn’t require big horsepower. Buccaneer rates the boat from 150hp to 200hp, although it will certainly handle a 225hp without any problems. For the test we had a 200hp Evinrude E-Tec which gave a top speed of 53.5mph. This was my first experience with a V6 E-Tec and I was impressed. Firstly, its compact styling doesn’t make it look overpowering on the transom. It starts first time, every time and you almost have to check the tell-tail or tacho to see if it’s running. It slides smoothly into gear and has instantaneous throttle response. The no-feedback Hynautic hydraulic steering makes driving effortless. Running a 19” pitch three-blade alloy prop, we went from zero to 5000 rpm with dragster like acceleration. Even at mid range the acceleration is impressive. Tell your passengers to hang on! Wakeboarders will be happy with about 20mph @ 3000 rpm and I found 34.5 mph @ 4000 rpm a very comfortable cruise speed in the conditions. If you’re trolling, the Evinrude E-Tec ticks over quietly at 700 rpm @ 3.5 mph. At this speed the engine is running with super economy and in ‘stealth’ mode. With the engine on 2/3 trim, 5000 rpm and no tab, I was able to pull exceptionally tight port and starboard turns without the prop letting go and any hint of sliding-out from the hull. Although this was the prototype 605 Exess, the engine hour indicator showed 75.5 hours, so a lot of serious on-the-water testing has been done since the boat was launched on Christmas Day 2004. It has been blooded with a marlin 35 nautical miles off Raglan, a mako at the Cavallis, trout on Lake Taupo and the boys from Buccaneer have lost count of the snapper that have come aboard. A lot of those hours were also used towing a wakeboarder or skier on the lakes. The 605 is a very versatile boat that serves a variety of functions and with a trailerable weight of 1700kg is easy to tow, launch and retrieve. According to Gerrand this was about boat number 800 to carry the 605 badge since the first 605 Cuddy Sport was launched 15 years ago. Interestingly, while the 605 has never won a prize at a boat show, boaters in their droves have chosen to buy them. With so many 605s on the water, it’s certainly gathered its own share of awards amongst contented owners and with the latest model to bear the 605 badge, that success is certain to continue for years to come.

creatures Historically, the ocean abyss has been described as a bottomless pit, or chasm that may lead to the underworld or even hell. with devils, zombie worms and beasts that will literally suck the life out of you, the dark abyss certainly has a hellish look … Early oceanographers thought the ocean was lifeless in the dark inky depths. After all, what life forms could possibly survive in one of the planet’s most extreme environments with no light, crushing pressure and chilling temperatures? Only extreme life forms, with just as extreme features would be able to survive in these deadly depths. Think nightmarish monsters straight out of a
horror movie, adorned with razor sharp deadly lures and night vision. These dark and sinister depths are the planet’s largest habitat, yet one of the least explored. Some fascinating people have, however, been shining a light on the realm of eternal darkness – one, a scientist from Melbourne, the other a fisherman from Russia. What they have in common is their fearless fascination for the deep sea and the beasts that call it home. Their targets are the macabre, the menacing and the nightmarish animals that have lived their lives in relative anonymity – until now …
STOP – DEAD BEWARE! STOP AT THESE LIGHTS AND THE ONLY PLACE YOU’RE GOING IS DOWN … ITS GULLET. The stoplight loosejaw is a freakish fish with ghoulish features. You could imagine it skulking around the inky depths casting spells and luring poor, innocent souls to their doom. Which isn’t too far from the truth. This fish gets its name from two specialised red and green light organs underneath each eye. At depth, most species can’t detect red light, so the red light organ allows it to hunt with an invisible beam of light without being detected. the green light is used to attract prey. ‘Loosejaw’ is a reference to the multiple hinges that allow the jaw to open in a number of directions. It has one of the widest gapes of any fish, its lower jaw measuring a quarter of its overall length. The lack of skin on the jaw reduces water resistance, allowing it to close quicker and snare its prey in the freakish needlesharp teeth, which continue down its throat.

BLACK DEATH JUST FROM ITS NAME YOU KNOW THE BLACK SCABBARDFISH IS GOING TO BE SOME SERIOUSLY DEMONIC PREDATOR THAT WILL HAUNT YOU IN YOUR DREAMS. And one look will confirm it won’t disappoint. Its pointed head and long, slender body makes it a fast and formidable predator. Large, bulbous eyes ensure nothing escapes its sight, while fearsome fang-like teeth are used to bone-crushing effect. What is even more terrifying is that while it may live thousands of metres down on the seabed, it rises under the cloak of darkness to hundreds of metres from the surface at night to hunt, its metallic black body making it near invisible. Victims won’t see it coming until it’s too late.
SOUL SUCKER FANGS BUT NO THANKS MEET THE FANGTOOTH – NO SURPRISES WHERE THIS FISH GETS ITS NAME FROM. Relative to body size, it holds the title of largest teeth of any fish in the ocean, with its disproportionately large fangs. How large? So large there are pockets in the top jaw to house the murderous looking bottom fangs when its mouth is closed. It also has bragging rights as one of the deepest-living fish, found to depths of five kilometres.

IF YOU’RE AN ARACHNOPHOBE AND THE THOUGHT OF HAVING A SPIDER SUCK THE LIFE OUT OF YOU IS HORRIFYING, then best you turn the page because your worst nightmare is a reality. Walking around on stilt-like legs thousands of metres beneath the surface of the ocean are giant sea spiders as big as your hand, matching the world’s biggest and scariest land spiders. But if it makes you feel any better, although spiderlike, they’re not a true spider, but one of the oldest arthropods on earth. A straw-like appendage called a proboscis allows them to stab their prey and suck the life out of it. Digestion, and even breathing, take place in their long legs.
CRYING WOLF WOLF EELS ARE RELATIVES OF BLENNIES, CUTE LITTLE CINDERELLALIKE FISH THAT DANCE IN THE SHALLOWS, SHOWING OFF THEIR BIG, ADORABLE EYES AND PRETTY FRINGED TENTACLES. In fact, you could say wolf eels are the ugly sisters of the blenny. It’s as though someone slipped an ugly pill into their drink, their smiles a nightmare of scary chompers and their lives spent in caves at the bottom of the sea. What they lack in looks, they make up for in size, measuring a mighty 1.5m and weighing a mammoth 18kg. And they’re voracious predators. The large head, powerful jaws and throat are littered with torturous, serrated teeth for crushing the life from armour-plated and hard-bodied animals, including crabs and snails. They can also lay claim to being one of the few fish that can live in near-freezing waters, with a natural antifreeze in their blood to keep it flowing.

FANG-TASTIC CREATURES
DEVILISH SOME OF THE DEADLIEST AND SCARIEST FISHING ON THE PLANET HAPPENS IN THE DARK DEPTHS BY FISH THAT GO BY THE NAMES OF SEA DEVIL, COFFINS AND MONKS. They’re all anglerfish, a sinister bunch of fish that, well … fish for other fish. Their front dorsal fin has been transformed into a rod-like structure with a lure at the end. Different species have different lures; some glow, some look like worms, while others look like a tasty treat. Lures are waved about to mimic food and attract gullible victims to their monstrous mouths. But there is no such thing as a free feed, especially in the inky black depths. Anything that is foolish enough to take the bait is swallowed whole. These fish have mega mouths loaded with sharp teeth and expandable stomachs, which allow some of these anglers to devour prey twice their size. It seems the deeper you go the more hellish the life forms. With so little known about the abyss and more efforts being put into scientific exploration, we expect even more sinister and alien-like species to be revealed. As we have learned, in the abyss, truth is stranger and even more nightmarish than fiction.
ARMED TO THE TEETH THE FRILLED SHARK MAKES JAWS LOOK LIKE A CUTE AND CUDDLY KITTEN. IT’S CONSIDERED A LIVING FOSSIL, WITH ANCESTRY DATING BACK OVER 80 MILLION YEARS. Sitting behind its lizard-like head are gill slits fashioned with a distinctive frilly edge, which meet under the throat, giving the appearance of a frilly collar. But that’s as frilly as it gets. Look into its mouth and you’re met with a world of pain. This shark launches itself at any unfortunate souls that come within striking distance. A massive mouth lets it take prey half as long as its own eel-like body, which includes squid, octopus, fish and even other sharks. And an array of 300 torturous, backward-facing teeth provide multiple angles to snare its victims and make sure there is no escape.

With the standard power package of twin Volvo Penta D13800s, the F55 tops out at around 30 knots.

There is a distinct family resemblance in all the Princess F Series flybridge boats, with the F55 an outstanding example that exceeds expectations.
T
he Princess F55 is one of five models in the F Series flybridge range and follows the same boldly distinctive window lines styling as the F70, F62 and F50. It’s just everything is proportionally different to maintain a balanced and smooth flowing exterior and interior profiles. Princess has been building boats since 1965 and today offer over 20 models in seven Series, from the 11m, 50 knots, R35, through to the luxury X95 motor yacht. Built in Plymouth, England, a city that has always played a key role in Britain’s maritime history, Princess is ideally placed to carry on that seafaring heritage. It was the home to Sir Francis Drake in the 16th century and in 1620 the port where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail aboard the Mayflower for the New World. While Princess is not sending boats to discover new lands or fight the Spanish Armada, they have indeed conquered the world in terms of exposure. Now, none more so than in New Zealand and Australia, where, through two very active distributors; Sports Marine in New Zealand and Princess Yachts Australia, this luxury brand is starting to get some traction again.

PRINCESS F55
In the previous issue, I reviewed the Princess V60, a stunning sport motor yacht that epitomises everything that Princess stands for – quality, style, finish and performance. Yes, I was impressed and when Sports Marine’s, Scott Williamson invited me to look over the F55, the first of the new flybridge models that has been imported to New Zealand I was keen. However, the lockdown has made me wait until mid-July to get onboard.
ELEGANT EXTERIOR
They describe the F55 interior as having an architectural presence that tastefully uses contrasting surfaces while retaining the elegance that Princess interiors are renowned for. Everywhere you look, you can see a deep dedication to detail. From the master stateroom to the flybridge has been well conceived and all areas maximise the available space. There doesn’t seem to be one area favoured over another, with every place given the benefit of what is required. Take for example the 18sqm flybridge with its raked hardtop and seriously generous seating down the starboard side and across the rear of the aft deck. There is a seat that slides out to make a sun pad or an extra berth for late-night guests, plus a large foldout teak table, and wet bar with provision for a bbq. If you are into entertaining, then you will love the open and expansive flybridge. The upper helm has twin seats, with the passenger seat outboard, so you have to step over the skipper which is not ideal. Full seat adjustment means no matter your size, you can position the skipper’s seat to suit you. Dual station instrumentation, controls and alarm systems including VHF, MFD and autopilot. There’s almost 2m headroom under the optional hardtop, which can also be fitted out with clears and a sunroof. While the standard option is a radar arch with a soft bimini, I can’t see too many Kiwi’s going for that. Princess does not offer a fully enclosed hardtop option. The two other significant outside areas, the foredeck and cockpit, have been carefully engineered to maximise space. It has become quite common these days to make then foredeck a featured area with sun pads. Princess has addressed this with fold up cushions that can transform the sun pad into more of 86

a lounger, plus the Portuguese style walk through between the seated areas means you are not stepping onto the squabs to go from deck to deck. And when you do need to go fore or aft, you’ll find wide side decks and robust handrails. The cockpit features a U shape lounger with folding teak table, with twin transom gates that lead to a full-width teak platform. You have the option of an electro-hydraulic rise/fall platform complete with dinghy chocks. There is also a foldaway swim ladder and a freshwater shower. Under the cockpit is an optional crew cabin, although I would not see any Kiwi owner employ it for such. It’s an extra overflow cabin, or somewhere the kids are going to call their own. In the case of our F55, it is used as a cavernous storage area.
INVITING INTERIOR
The saloon furnishings are placed to make the most of the excellent light and views through the large windows. There are plenty of small finishing touches, such as stitched leather, strip lighting and materials that set the Princess F55 apart from a lot of competitive boats of a similar size. The interior is as meticulous and exciting as you would expect
from a bespoke creation. Being a production boat it has in-house design, so it’s not available to customise. However, why would you? Princess has nailed it, when it comes to style, layout and practicality, with an inviting interior that you want to be part of. There is an extremely well-equipped aft galley that has an integrated opening window to the cockpit and glass sliding doors that open to blend the indoor and outdoor areas. I like the fact that from the rear of the cockpit to the forward screen, it’s one space, with the only divisions dictated by the furnishings. Interestingly the saloon sole is split level with a step down to the galley and step up to the forward lounging and helm area. Being a flybridge boat, there are two distinct driving areas, with the saloon helm very retro with flat glass screens, adjustable wheel and seats, plus an electric opening window. Visibility is excellent, and everything is easy to hand. With the Volvo Penta joystick controls, you can manoeuver this shaft-driven boat into tight spaces at low speeds, just as easily as you would with IPS.

cabin, and there’s an opening port either side for some natural ventilation. To port are a couple of chairs with a small table and to starboard deep drawers. There is also extra storage under the bed. As you would expect, there is a large en-suite with a sliding door to maximise space. Dark timbers throughout the accommodation areas contrast the light fabrics and again accentuate the quality of cabinetry and styling that has gone into the F55. You have the choice of Revere or Alba Oak with a satin finish, with Walnut or Silver Oak as an option. Our F55 was completed in satin-finished Walnut, and it certainly looked classy. Guest accommodation is provided with a forward VIP cabin with island berth and a smaller guest cabin with twin single beds that can slide together to form one double. Both cabins share the day head.

With the standard power package of twin Volvo Penta D13800s, the F55 tops out at around 30 knots and has an ideal cruise around 20-21 knots, However, if you are after more, both maximum and cruise speed then you can up-spec to a pair of D13-900s. Top speed jumps to 33 knots. The solid grp hardtop maybe gives the F55 a top-heavy appearance, but it is built light and seems not to affect how the boat handles. The riding attitude is around 8-10 degrees. I am not sure why you would go to the 900s, as the 800s present a very agile and responsive boat that is a pleasure to drive. It’s almost like driving a sport boat and is a lot of fun. Top the tanks up, and you can cruise for around 250nm and burn about 200 lph.
SUMMARY
When you are pitching a boat into the highly competitive 1718m flybridge market, you have to be sure you have it right. Kiwis are very familiar with this style of boat from both local and international builders, so having an edge is an advantage. Traditional the focus in recent years has been on fully enclosed hardtops, so the Princess F55 comes along with an alternative option. Will Kiwis go for it? Only time will tell, but if you are happy with the solid hardtop open style, then the Princess F55 is undoubtedly well worth a look.

SMUGGLER STRATA 1050 AMPHIBIOUS A
MPHIBIOUS BOATS ARE ALL the rage and Smuggler Marine are one of the best exponents of this versatile style of boating. The 1050 is their latest creation. Smuggler Marine are currently working on an exciting new design for an amphibious 10.5m RIB, which utilises the popular Strata 900 / 1000 / 1100 RIB hull moulds. This new venture between Smuggler and amphibious system producer Orion has a 6-wheel 6.5 tonne hydraulic system. It will be powered by two 300hp outboards. The engineering has been done for the hull and deck structure, and work is progressing on the interior layout
which includes a lounge area forward and aft of a bowrider type console area, with seating for twelve people. The aft cockpit includes a bar and barbecue, with removable picnic table. This particular design has developed from talking to Smuggler clients who want to go further afield, for example from Auckland to Great Barrier, and not be constrained by changeable weather conditions. It will cruise at 30 knots making the trip to Gt Barrier fast and comfortable. The Strata 1050 amphibious is the ultimate cruising picnic boat and will be popular not only around the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, but also export markets such
as the Pacific Islands, Australia and Europe. Being amphibious, the Strata 1050 will give Smuggler clients the versatility of both launching and getting ashore without the need for trailers or heavy tow vehicles. Customers who have a Smuggler RIB from this mould include Coastguard, charter boats in the Pacific Islands and private recreational users. It is a well proven hull with all owners remarking on the dry comfortable ride. Smuggler Marine are excited to be launching this new model in 2020 and the interest it will no doubt generate. FATCAT 5000
T
HE FATCAT 5000 HAS BEEN conceived as the most spacious, stable and safe 5m boat around. Offering almost eight square meters of cockpit floor space, it lends itself to a wide range of console/cabin configurations - Centre console, Side console, Forward Cuddy Cabin are all potential options – even leave the options and have an open boat with massive space. The versatility on offer from such a spacious, stable platform is enormous. Much emphasis has been placed on developing a hull shape that performs
well across all conditions and loading configurations. The hull is similar to the proven FatCat 4000 shape but with small tweaks here and there to adjust for the hydrodynamics of this larger vessel. The Semi asymmetric shape is maintained as it the central “pod” to clean up water flow and further enhance load carrying capacity Wide side decks and sizable boarding platforms are also maintained. The flat, uncluttered cockpit floor is above the water so is self draining in all conditions. No bilge pump or forward motion is necessary to drain the cockpit. The base boat runs a centrally mounted outboard engine with power in the 75 - 130hp range. Investigation into a jet option is also taking place. The boats will be constructed from aluminium.
The Hull is 5 meters long with the bowsprit adding another 200mm for an overall length of 5.2m. Beam is 2.3m with an empty hull displacement of 500kg. Add an engine and trailer to that will see a towing weight in the 850-1050kg range depending on the configurations and options chosen. Since the release of the production FatCat 4000 six months ago, the team at FatCat have been fielding many enquiries about a larger boat and the 5000 is set to prove very popular. This winter, construction of the first boat will begin with production set to ramp up quickly following. Interest is already high in this design both locally and from abroad. FENTON MARINE FLYFIN 540 FISHER T
HIS NEW DESIGN CONCEPT this week comes from Tauranga based Nicholas Fenton who has stepped out of his usual SBM boats and into the competitive world of all aluminium trailer boats. Nicholas Fenton, through Tino Marine, is well known for his un-puncturable, impact absorbing alternative to traditional RIB pneumatic tubes. He calls it SBM (Solid Core Buoyancy) which provides increased stability and minimal maintenance However he is also busy designing custom boats for the alloy trailer boat market. Amongst those is the FlyFin 540 Fisher, which is the first in this range of boats to be marketed under the FlyFin brand. This is just the first and will soon be followed by 4.6m, and 5m versions, that will be released later in 2020. The first two customer boats will be delivered in June 2020 and were to be on display at the now cancelled Hutchwilco NZ boat Show.

“We love building high end bespoke boats for our overseas and local clients but we also have a lot of inquiry from local people and friends and family for good quality, well built, safe boats for use in NZ that are not going to break the bank”, says Nicholas. The concept of the FlyFin range of boats is simple. Using modern manufacturing techniques and sophisticated CAD hydrostatic software usually only reserved for big dollar builds Nicholas says that he can design and build a boat that is very safe, strong, handles the New Zealand conditions and looks fresh and contemporary. “A focus on “ease of use” is always high on my design criteria. Such as an easy to fold bimini, as most NZ households have storage restrictions. It is nice to have a good strong bimini that will keep the weather of you when at sea but not be too much effort to stow when you get home” PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE
adds Nicholas.. The FlyFin 540 Fisher features rounded inner gunwales that make for the perfect fishing leaner, plus providing a good seat. There is a built-in bait station, adjustable seating, and a easy folding rocket launcher with folding bimini, LED down lights and rod storage. Basic specs of the FlyFin 540 are 5.40m overall, with a beam of 2.30m. deadrise of 17 deg and an estimated weight of 940 kgs. Power options are single out boards, 75-115hp and construction is 5mm bottom with 4mm sides and structures. Nicholas Fenton info@tino-marine.com www.Flyfin.co.nz
DIBLEY/RUSSELL AFTERSHOCK 2 K
EVIN DIBLEY’S CONVENTIONAL coastal trawler, Aftershock 2 is more than an idea, it is currently under construction. Being built in Canterbury by father and son team Stuart and Brent Russell is a new 50 footer in collaboration with yacht designer Kevin Dibley of DYD Ltd. To be named ‘Aftershock 2’ this motor yacht will be powered by a 225 HP John Deere and achieve cruising speeds of 10+ knots. This is the second motor yacht built by Stuart and Brent and plans are to use her for family cruising in and around NZ. Overall length is 15.5m, with a beam of 4.40m and a displacement (half load) of 18,000kg. Aftershock 2 will carry 900 litres of fuel and 800 litres of water and is being built for serious coastal cruising. The layout features three cabins with an owner’s master cabin the bow plus port/starboard guest cabins. There are twin ensuites to service the three cabins. The main saloon has a starboard side helm with settee aft. Opposite is a
generous size galley with large servery areas and a U shape dinette forward. The cockpit layout has been designed around entertaining and functional use, with easy access to the large boarding platform. While the layout is particular to the owners, we can offer a variety of interior styles to suit a clients taste. There is a second helm station and further lounge area on the upper deck, with a crane and aft tender storage. The hull and decks are composite construction with a timber laminated
keel and ply/glass bulkheads. The owners wanted to retain the traditional look of timber using internal beams on white head linings combined with light weight ply foam glass panels for the wheel house decks and flybridge. Carefully selected gel coated e-glass surfaces bonded to foam cores, where smooth gel coated finishes were needed for the entrance main bulkhead were chosen. INNOVISION IV 656 N
OT ALL TRAILER BOATS ARE created equal on when you look at the Innovision IV656 you certainly see something very different. Designer Simon Minoprio explains why. At Innovision Boats were all about making a product that stands out from the pack. Our plumb bow designs are definitely different and we have already proven that our hulls have a superior soft ride, the dynamic transom design providing great stability, but that’s not enough for us. We have been striving to create a very unique look that screams class. A look that truly makes our brand stands in a class of its own. In summer 2018-19 I got some inspiration from a classic designed 30fter moored in the Ngunguru estuary. We love the look of the classic boats, they are classy and when you see a nicely finished one you stand there and go wow, that’s cool, they are like classic cars. There are not
many (if any) alloy trailer boats that have that effect on you - most are fairly ordinary and no one is really pushing the boundaries. Working with aluminium you are very restricted to what you can achieve. You have flat plate from which you have to develop a 3D shape out of. You can use wheeling machines to stretch the plate but this takes time and adds a lot of extra labour to the build. All our designs were designed with performance first, then we would work out how to build it after. Other manufactures design their hulls to suit a simple design/build process to save manufacturing costs. The result, you end you with an ordinary hull. The new look is an option you can choose from our original look. The
benefits are that the foredeck is flat, there are no side decks cutting into the foredeck area and you have a massive area up forward, which makes for a great casting platform. With no raised rail this actually makes it easier to access the bow. There is more volume in the V bunk area allowing for a second shelf for extra storage. All round there is lots of benefits to the new look. We can appreciate this look is not for everyone. Some people just don’t like change but that is ok. Simon Minoprio simon@innovisionboats.com

Galley to sstarboard with large dinning to port opens out to the cockpit via a pillar-less electric window and entry door. A small tender is garaged under the cockpit sole with the transom
hydraulically opening out to create a large boarding platform. Suggested power is twin 600hp shaft drive with tunnels. Alternative propulsion options are also on offer. DOGS ON BOATS
DOGONIT BY THEIR VERY NATURE, DOGS ARE FRESH-AIR ADVENTURERS, ARE INTUITIVE SWIMMERS AND LOVE NOTHING MORE THAN BEING BY THEIR FAMILY’S SIDE. RIVIERA OFFERS SOME HANDY TIPS TO OWNERS WHO LIKE TO TAKE THEIR POOCH WITH THEM WHEN THE GO BOATING.
ONCE ACCUSTOMED to a family’s Riviera routine, dogs know that they’re there to have the most enjoyable experience together. Take Honey, for example. This cocker spaniel sprints down the marina in excitement to jump aboard her second home, Roboat, Dasha McGee and Murray Brown’s Riviera 36 Flybridge. “We got Honey this Christmas when she was 10 weeks old,” says Dasha. “Straight away she came out with us for two weeks, so her training was very boat specific.” In a few months, Honey wholly adapted to boating life. “She’s used to the routine and loves being on an adventure, on the paddleboard or the tender fishing.”
Potty Spots “Because she was a puppy, we brought puppy training pads, an artificial grass patch and newspaper. But now we take her ashore a few times a day to do her business and to exercise.” Puppy potties, with a plastic tray and artificial grass, are another option for boat owners. “We try to moor where there’s a sandy bit ashore and take her in two to three

DOGS ON BOATS times a day, usually on the stand-up paddleboard.” Most dogs trained to go to the bathroom outside of their home will typically hold on until they have an opportunity to go ashore. However, on the odd occasion, there’s always the boarding platform. “It’s easy to hose off there. I know other boat owners have dogs use the foredeck, and that’s another option.” At the end of the day, a doggie bed awaits for when Honey’s all tuckered out. “And then she sneaks into bed with us, which she’s not supposed to!”

'To reduce the risk of seasickness, just like people, make sure they have a vision of the direction they are travelling..'
Books, boats and Honey, does life get any better?
Engines and Movement Sudden noises can frighten dogs. Starting the engine in the marina without travelling anywhere can help a dog become accustomed to the sound. Eventually, short trips out will get them used to the motion. Tania and Danny Wilson have two furball crewmates to accompany them on their Riviera 43 Flybridge, Black Label. Two-year-old Edwina, a Brussels griffon, was raised on Black Label but Bernard, a chocolate labradoodle, was six years old when he first jumped on. “We used to take Bernie down to the marina on the weekends and just sit with him on the boat,” says Tania. “Then I took his bedding from home and put it in the second stateroom where he sleeps on the bed. “Bernie’s a placid dog, so the engine noise didn’t phase him. They both love the boat. They’re obsessed with the fish we catch. And because we’re boating on Lake Macquarie and the size of the boat, we don’t have any issues with seasickness.”
Seasickness None of the Riviera owners Experience spoke with had experienced canine seasickness, so we turned to the expert at Gold Coast’s The Point Vet, Dr John Rigley. Dr Rigley says it’s great for dogs to get out on the water and while seasickness may affect some dogs, it won’t affect others at all. “To reduce the risk of seasickness, just like people, make sure they have

invaluable. But even the most welltrained dogs get overexcited and leap for joy – overboard. It’s a situation familiar to Raidah and Mark Dunsford. Their adventurous canine, Ninja, got his sea legs aboard their 51 Open Flybridge, Akoya. “Ninja’s fallen off a few times between the boarding platform and the marina,” says Raidah. “So, he’s in a life jacket in the marina, especially in summer when there’s much going on

and many people about. When we pull into marinas, I find it best to put him in the cabin so he doesn’t get underfoot, and then I can concentrate on tying up.” Most canine lifejackets have a handle that makes scooping a dog out of the water easy. “Ninja’s a competent swimmer and happy in the water, but we do discourage him from jumping off the boat,” says Raidah. “Boating wouldn’t be the same without Ninja. He loves the freedom of the beach, going on the paddleboard, fishing with my husband on the tender and checking the crab pots – that gets me off the hook! “At the end of the day, he’s upstairs with us on his chair while we have afternoon drinks.” A snug lifejacket is best, yet some furry friends can’t seem to find the right fit. Such is the case for Bruce, Travis and Michelle Sullivan’s six-yearold pug-crossed-shih tzu. Bruce goes without a lifejacket on the couple’s Riviera 39 Open Flybridge, Condor. “He’s a bit chubby around the tummy, so finding a lifejacket to fit is a bit of a challenge,” laughs Michelle.

The 39 Flybridge’s spacious cockpit features an extended cockpit awning for shade and shelter. Michelle says it’s ideal for keeping the area cool for Bruce outdoors where he can still see what’s going on. “It can get hot on the teak, so it’s great to have a shaded area in the cockpit. We make sure there’s always plenty of water available for Bruce, and he can go in and out of the saloon as he pleases.” Like people, dogs don’t want to miss out on the action. “He loves to see everybody. One day, instead of going inside when it got hot, he chose to sit on the bottom step of the ladder to get off the deck. “I wasn’t a dog person before I had Bruce. I used to laugh at our friends with dogs on boats, having to wake up at 6am to take them ashore. Now I’m one of those people, and I can’t imagine it any other way!”

PHIL GILBERT ANSWERS...
THE DARK SIDE… W
ITH THE ANCHOR FINALLY UP, and the on board tempers somewhat frayed, the end of cruise voyage home is quiet and contained. Even the best stress free docking you’ve done fails to lift the climate onboard. A gentle dismount, a borrowed power cable pending the reinstatement of your shortened version, and assisting with the washing once home means at least the dog says good night to you. The Xmas cruise is over! You wake up next morning to muted morning TV, with mumblings of ‘virus, pandemic, and levels of incarceration’. Realising this could lead to issues re the various items that need attention on your noble craft, you hurriedly phone and arrange for the boat to be lifted onto the hard to fix the anchor winch and prop shaft wrap, repairs to various anchor dings around the bow, and refloat as soon as these are complete. The lift is booked for a weeks’ time, by which stage that somewhat annoying woman on TV is preaching doom and gloom for the masses. The day after the boat is lifted, she announces a curfew on all movements, and your craft is trapped. No work done, no reduction on hardstand fees though, as frustration brings the BP up to new levels. The weather is immaculate. ‘Best Summer Ever!!’ A lifetime later restrictions are eased, coinciding with a dramatic about face in the weather and you sadly realise your boating is essentially curtailed for the season. You notice that nobody in your family is too distressed by this fact. The works have finally been completed on the boat, and at considerable expense, she is returned to the water and snugged down in her berth. Recalling your first mates thinking over the cruise, and desperately trying to find a way to reinvigorate the spousal enthusiasm for things nautical, you arrange to borrow a 104

A trip around the bleak Taranaki coastline in early winter should do the trick. The eagerness with which the mooted trip is greeted should have been a warning, but you are blind to the signs. In typical fashion, the day of departure coincides with the departure of wind, rain and sleet for at least a week. Experienced friends are travelling in convoy in their huge 5th wheeler, to show you the ropes. Ignorance is bliss and you don’t realise this is an error. You are pleasantly surprised to discover
the borrowed camper is light and easy to drive. It has sufficient power that you are not embarrassed at slight increases of incline, like the modified bus holding up long queues etched in your early familial memories, and the dog is very comfortable thank you. The happy flow of inanities from the navigator as she plots the route, the lunch stop and final destination in a PoP (Park over Property) as advised by your travel mates is not music to the ear. Who would go to Raglan?? Dropping anchor on a flat piece of land beside your friends, chairs come out and libations to the travel Gods are taken. The dog does not need to be taken ashore, the wind is on the lee, and the BBQ does a sterling job on the steaks. The only thing missing is the chine chuckle and that constant worry

the handbrake is not dug in…! Travelling on, with no concerns over wind, tide, and wave condition, the gentle country roads mesmerise. You stop and walk to waterfalls bigger than the Colville Channel overfalls. You further discover that while you were away doing the boys fishing trips, or down working on the boat, your gorgeous other half has been taking golf lessons. This means she can share your other solo passion and has secretly got her, and your clubs stashed in the voluminous 5th wheeler. Turncoats!. You are stunned to discover Taranaki is littered with excellent country golf courses, and has truly amazing campgrounds on beautiful ironsand beaches. The weather is of no concern. If it’s unpleasant you visit a remote pub attached to a faux museum. Travel time is about 1 hour a day, golf courses let you stay for free if you play and despite all your best efforts you find yourself enjoying the experience. The first mate is as happy as you can recall in some time, whilst on holiday. The big downside is the look on Her face as you settle into the armchairs to watch TV in the huge 5th Wheeler, with its sides popped out. The comments like ‘quite small isn’t it?’ on return to your borrowed transport bodes ill for the future! You suddenly notice you have not thought of the boat for a week. It feels like a betrayal or divorce. You now understand how Darth Vader was attracted to the Dark Side. It has its merits! The trip back via the scenic Central Plateau, with 2 degrees outside and a balmy 20 degrees inside almost tips the scales. Out of your left ear you hear the dulcet tones of a happy first mate discoursing about a huge motorhome show in Hamilton.. You recognise the folly of your plans.

FLETCH’S TIPS
Dear PowerBoat readers. I managed to injure myself last month, breaking my foot (don’t ask), because of this injury I have been unable to get out on the water to research Tips and Guides for boaties. So, this month I have reached out over the internet to readers for contributions of their favourite boating tips to share.
TIP #037
Forgetting to put the bung in can have devastating effects TIP #036
CLOSE QUARTERS MANOEUVERING
FORGOT TO PUT THE BUNG IN
Justin’s Tip via FB: when manoeuvering in a confined space (beside a wharf or boat ramp), move the gear lever into neutral then turn the steering to where you want it and then re-engage gear. This will provide instant thrust in the direction needed and making manoeuvring and docking easier. Try to avoid spinning the wheel when in gear as this will cause the boat to lurch around and hit the wharf or other moored boats.
This is from Alan, but I have to put my hand up for this one as well, I once launched a boat a few years ago and couldn’t figure out why it was feeling sluggish under power and had problems getting onto the plane, after noticing an alarming amount of water inside I was able to plug the bunghole with an old rag. This is why I carry two spare emergency bungs, one for myself and one for any other boaties that have done the same. Pro Tip: I always put the bung in before I leave home, also my son’s job is to check the bung is in correctly before we slide the boat off the trailer.
TIP #038
REVERSING A TRAILER BOAT 101 Mark supplied this one: When you are reversing a trailer boat, there’s one crucial rule of thumb to remember, left is always right and right is always left. So, if you are looking toward the front of the vehicle, turn the wheel to the right to make the trailer go left or turn left to make the trailer go right – Simple eh?

When launching on a beach goes bad. TIP #040
BEACH LAUNCHING
From Tim via FB: When doing a beach launch, so funny watching all the cars get stuck in the sand, a little tip which works for me, always drive a little bit backwards first before driving forward (after putting the boat on the trailer). You would be amazed how this helps to get up off the beach without getting stuck.
TIP #039
JOIN THE COASTGUARD
From Cam via FB: If you own a boat, join the coastguard! This tip is for all boat owners, even the ones that have been boating for years (including myself), If you have invested in purchasing a boat, make sure you complete the NZ Coastguard Day Skipper and radio courses! This is an excellent reminder for all of us. If you already had done a NZ Coastguard course a few years ago, a refresher course would provide an update with the latest in safety procedures and marine radio training. Pro Tip: Most insurance companies require you to either join a boating club or complete a Coast Guard course before they provide marine insurance.
