WORLD’S FIRST ELECTRIC HYDROFOIL PWC ELECTRO.AERO, AN A U S T R A L I A N S TA R TUP BASED IN PERTH, H A S D E V E L O P E D W H AT IT CLAIMS IS THE WORLD’S FIRST ELECTRIC HYDROFOIL PERSONAL WAT E R C R A F T – T H E WAV E F LY E R . While there has been electric personal watercraft before, WaveFlyer differs as it rides up on foils with power coming from an underwater electric propulsion unit attached to the foils. Some sponsorship funding for the project came from Galaxy Resources, a lithium producer in Australia. The
team worked with the University of Western Australia and their director, Professor Thomas Braunl, said: “The development of WaveFlyer builds on previous work carried out by the team that developed Australia’s first electric jetski in 2015.” When on the hull, WaveFlyer appears similar to a conventional jetski, but as speed rises so it lifts in the water with the actively stabilised hydrofoils. Details of the WaveDrive propulsion system have not been released, but it is based around two water-cooled, three-phase electric motors that are mounted underwater on the rear foil, which also acts as the rudder.
The proof of concept battery power comprises lithium-ion batteries that provide 2kW hours of power, which is enough to propel the jetski for half an hour whilst on the foils. A production WaveFlyer could easily carry 4-8kWh of batteries for 1-2 hours of foiling endurance. A charging system allows quick charging. While there are not yet firm plans for the WaveFlyer to go into production and it is still in the development stage, the jetski hydrofoil development follows that of the boating market in general, which is seeing considerable interest in the use of hydrofoils to improve performance. www.electro.aero

Tayne placed first in both Blaster and Pro Ski Lites classes at the 2019 Nationals, while also taking out the top spot in the Pro Mod Lites and Pro Ski Lites classes at the Australian Nationals.
“It helps to know what is going on with the ski. If you have an issue, it is helpful to know what is going on and makes it easier to fix. It also helps when building skis, as there are a lot of hours that go into building a race SuperJet.”
The 2019/2020 season will see the 21year old compete in his eighth season of racing and will again represent Yamaha as a SuperJet ambassador.
“It will be a slightly quieter season for me will be buying my first house with my brother, but aiming to be at as many events as possible to defend my titles from last season and most of all enjoy myself.”
When not working on the mechanical aspects of his sport, Tayne says his overall fitness and mental strength is immensely important.
“To be supported by Yamaha is pretty surreal really as I have been riding and racing the Yamaha SuperJet for more than ten years. Yamaha is so highly recognised and to have my name associated with them is something I dreamed about for a long time. This will be the third year I have signed on with Yamaha and hope for many more to come,” says Tayne.
As well as his wins at the Nationals last year his best career results also came when he placed first in Pro Ski Lites at the World Finals in America and has a Rip n Ride award on the shelf as well. Tayne is partway through his marine apprenticeship, something he says is benefitting his racing career giving him a good mechanical understanding of his Yamaha SuperJet.

“One of the biggest strengths to have is to be mentally strong and prepared. Jet ski racing is much like all motor racing where a lot can happen pretty quick, so being able to analyse a situation and deal with difficulties is high up there. Fitness is definitely needed, and I spend a lot of time at the gym to try and be prepared in that aspect.”

Weighing less than 600 lbs and able to generate the equivalent of 180hp, the Orca is said to offer an unrivaled power-to-weight ratio in a compact hull form that serves to differentiate it from competing high-power personal watercraft. Top speed is stated as 65 mph. The Orca’s 23kWh battery capacity provides energy for up to two hours of drive time under typical operating conditions. The 275lb battery runs on a 400V automotive system, which the company claims offers greater efficiency, reliability and safety. The PWC can be charged from a regular outlet for
convenient overnight charging, from standard automotive chargers at a rate of up to 10kW, or by DC fast charging to 80% in 20 minutes, making the units appealing for commercial rental operations. In recreational use, the company is backing its Orca PWC with a five-year
no-maintenance powertrain warranty and remote diagnostics utilising an onboard computer that also offers intelligent connectivity via built in GPS mapping, LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. www.taigamotors.ca

There are no radically new models, maximum horsepower has remained unchanged and the Kawasaki SX-R remains the only stand-up ski. The Sea-Doo GTI has just come in for the biggest change in nine years. Sea-Doo has created a new stepping stone from the cheapest model in its jet ski range. The completely overhauled 2020 Sea-Doo GTI series is designed to appeal to some of the 130,000 customers around the world who have bought the budget-priced Spark since it disrupted the personal watercraft industry with a sub-$8000 price point five years ago. The biggest changes to the GTI model since 2010 include a new one-inch wider, second-generation Polytec hull with an extra layer of fibreglass that Sea-Doo claims is more stable on the water and more resistant to scratches and impact damage. The 2020 GTI models also gain a new 4.5-inch digital display screen, a larger 152-litre storage area thanks to a redesigned top deck and nose, an 8.8-litre storage pocket with a waterproof compartment for phones, and the option of a factory-fitted Bluetooth audio system for the first time. The new GTI series, in fact, shares the same deck and hull design as the 2020 GTR 230 supercharged performance model. However, under the seat is a choice of a 90 horsepower 900cc three-cylinder engine (carried over from the previous model) or a 130 horsepower 1630cc three-cylinder engine, which is new to the GTI. While the 130hp output is the same – despite the bigger engine capacity – the 2020 GTI 130 has more torque, which means it doesn’t need to work as hard to get you moving. The top speed of the GTI 90 is about 68kmh (similar to a Spark 60hp), while the claimed top speed of the GTI 130 is about 80kmh (similar to a Spark 90hp). But the GTI is a much bigger and more comfortable watercraft and is better suited to carrying passengers or towing than the comparatively small Spark. As with other models in the Sea-Doo line-up, the GTI is available with a range of accessories including a 15-litre fuel caddy and a 16-litre cool box.
