SEALEGS BIGGEST EVER

Not content in having the world’s biggest Eco Tourism Sealegs, Pennicott Wilderness Journeys now has three.

140 | RIB ANNUAL 2019
Pennicott Wilderness Journeys requirement for the vessel was to operate with limited impact in Parks and Wildlife locations with little or no infrastructure. Naiad Design NZ came up with a detailed weight study and hull design on an 11-12M vessel incorporating the Sealegs SYS100 wheel assembly and power pack for the vessel and seating around 30 passengers and 2 crew. This build is the first of an order of three for Kirby Marine in Western Australia who specialise in commercial rigid inflatable vessels and recreational performance craft. During the build, there were numerous engineering challenges in staying true to the design teams and also in complying with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority NSCV survey regulations for a class 1 passenger carrying vessel. The final outcome was simply stunning in all aspects, the amphibious Sealegs component worked a treat and showed no hesitation in soft sand and steep inclines with minimal load on the hydraulic power pack. www.kirbymarine.com

JP RIBS PROJECT K
The JP RIBS Team have been working hard the past year developing their new K Series 12M Custom Tender. Very similar to the 10M produced back in 2018, the 12M has been designed and built to carry 12 people and is in full commercial survey. The JP RIBS Project K 12m is a 23-degree deep V shaped hull, plum bow with wide chines incorporating an additional 90mm flange for added stiffness and greater support for the tubes; this makes for an excellent ride in rough sea conditions. The very excited New Zealand client will receive delivery of his new JP RIB in September this year. The RIB will be kept in Auckland and be operating as a charter vessel in an out of West Haven Marina. JP RIBS is planning to produce another three of these tenders prior to the 2021 America’s Cup. These tenders will be available for sale or charter for the America’s Cup. This tender along with other JP RIBS’ models
will be available for sea trial at the Auckland on the Water Boat Show 2019. The RIBS are crafted by hand in Northland fusing unparalleled performance with quality and endurance, combining a slick finish and high spec technology, with the care and attention that comes through hand moulding by craftsmen. JP RIBS offers a custom solution for superyacht tenders and RIBS. The new Project K 12M vessel is another execution of their bespoke vessels which display exceptional performance coupled with a smooth, efficient ride. The Project K 12M is 12m LOA, with a beam of 3.9m, fuel capacity of 500 litres and designed for 400-800hp engine packages. CASTLEROCK CARBON CAT Seen at the recent SCIBS was this amazing new tiller steer inflatable cat, which looked like a thundercat on steroids. Australian designed and NZ built, the Castlerock Carbon Cat is the brainchild of Dan Oatley, a member of one of Australia’s best-known boating families. The Castlerock Carbon Cat is constructed from carbon fibre and Hypalon which provide strength, durability and reliability. The 5.3m Carbon Cat is capable of 60 knots with a comfortable 45 knots cruising speed. What is really impressive is the attention to detail, the craftmanship and its seaworthiness. Not only does the Carbon Cat incorporate racing yacht features, its innovative tunnel hull design is very stable at high speeds due to the custom hull profile that maximises the aerodynamic lift whilst reducing hydrodynamic forces. An innovative catamaran designed for high speed in calm water and sea worthiness in coastal passages. Featuring fixed aluminium planning strakes to provide lift and rigidity to the catamaran which are complimented with a pair of trim tabs and outboard jacking plate to adjust ride attitude.
146 | RIB ANNUAL 2019
The boat is lightweight with a reinforced carbon fibre deck, structure and full hatch. Under the hatch is room for a 80L fuel tank, storage and the front face accommodates instruments and optional stereo system. Surrounded by a robust hypalon tube to give protection and a dry ride. An exhilarating boat that is suitable for all levels of experience. The Mercury 115hp Pro XS 4-Stroke is fitted with Mercury’s Zero Torque tiller system that allows for effortless steering and controlled throttle response due to its patented hydraulic valve. The Mercury 115hp Pro XS is height adjustable with the use of a Seastar jacking plate. Castlerock Carbon Cat | www.castlerockcarbon.com enquiry@castlerockcarbon.com

TINO 660 BL This Tino 660 BL is the first in a dedicated yacht tender series, from Tauranga based Tino Marine. Specially designed to work efficiently and safely as a tender for superyachts, the 660 BL brings together a blend of modern, computer controlled manufacturing and hand-crafted components to provide a superyacht quality tender that matches, design with performance and elegance.
148 | RIB ANNUAL 2019
Specific design feature such as the intergraded side boarding steps and beach landing bow steps make this boat very safe when loading or unloading passengers weather from the yacht to tender at sea or on to a beach. The Tino 660 BL was customised by the client to have a full-length bimini that is stowed on board at all time and can be folded out by the crew at a very quickly and easily. A full collapsable main bimini frame to aid in storage and crane operations makes the boat only 1.5m high when folded down. With a 6mm plate aluminium hull and composite features on the inside, the owner has enjoyed the flexibility in design without compromising design or fit and finish. The new Tino 660 BL is powered by a Yanmar 6LP running through a Hamilton Jet HJ213 and gives a top speed of 38 knots. Basic dimensions are 6.6m LOA, 2.8m bean and an all up weight of 1900kg. A salient feature of the Tino is its closed-cell foam pontoons, or SBM (solid-core buoyancy module), which provide extra buoyancy and stability at rest when the boat is heavily loaded. They also offer protection when coming alongside, and while it’s not a substitute for fenders, the SBM is tough and will cope with a fair amount of abuse at docking time.
“The owner is super excited about the increased space onboard the new tender, with a fixed footprint for garaging purposed this new Tino has so much more room because of is SBM fender system over the previous inflatable. We can’t wait to take this new tender around the world, there was no task their build team could not handle,” says the captain of M/Y Asteria Nicholas Fenton designer and MD of Tino Marine says he is very excited to be designing and building boats of this calibre here in New Zealand and seeing them venture around the world. “Seeing satisfied customers with very high standards is what keeps us inspired”, says Nicholas. Every aspect of the Tino 660 BL is designed to function flawlessly and impress aesthetically. www.tino-marine.com

BOAT REVIEW | Explorer Bluewater 7m Series The Explorer Bluewater is based on a 25 deg high lift grp hull which incorporates a central plank that runs well forward.
RIB 150 | RIB ANNUAL 2019
The Explorer Bluewater 710 is one of three models in the Bluewater 700 series, which range from 7.1m to 7.8m and while all three are based on the same hull, the layouts and internal design can be very different.

BOAT REVIEW | Explorer Bluewater 7m Series
Two different console options are available on the Bluewater 700 Series. Our Bluewater 710 was only the third boat from the mould, and while only one has been for recreational use, Explorer is keen to sell more into that market. Explorer likes to use the word bespoke, and it is very apt, considering when you talk to them about a Bluewater 700 series you start with a blank deck and build it from there. How you want the internal space configured is entirely up to you. Our boat was set up for a commercial whale watch/dive operation in Tonga, so the seating layout was designed to accommodate 10-12 passengers, hence the central bench seat design, open deck space and forward console. This is not something that would suit most recreational owners. PLENTY OF OPTIONS Explorer starts with a couple of different consoles. There is a larger and higher unit that provides plenty of storage space and protection. The downside is you lose some of your access to the bow due to its width. The smaller version as we had on the test boat was narrower and still allowed space for a Lowrance 5 Hook MFD, ICOM VHF, Yamaha controls, twin instruments and other accessories. There is a couple of deep storage lockers below the console, plus a moulded forward seat with soft cushion. To keep your cellphone and keys dry, there is also a waterproof glovebox. A Perspex screen helps divert the wind, and if you want to add drop 152 | RIB ANNUAL 2019

down clears from the bimini, you can make the helm a very protected area. , and like the rest of the boat, variations of the design are also available. There is a variety of standard seating options from bin seats to bucket seats, and Explorer can supply just about any variant of seating you want. The selfdraining cockpit can be finished in either anti-skid fibreglass or U-Deck flooring. There are two different transom options; a straight transom with no rear seats or aft decks or one with a couple of aft jump seats and twin decks. I would think the full transom with engine well, decks and rear
and somewhere to keep the batteries. If you do go for the flat transom, the engine will be set back further, and you have the bonus of more internal space. As this boat is to be used for diving, there were two Dixon boarding ladders, one on the port side aft deck, the other a tube mounted ladder. There was also a Tenob auxiliary outboard bracket on the starboard side. The Bluewater 710 comes standard with a traditional over bow anchoring system with a deep moulded self-draining anchor locker. However, there is the option of a drum winch and through-hull
seats would be the favoured option, and you also get the bonus of storage lockers
system, which can be operated from the helm.

Uoleva is part of the Ha’apai Island group located approximately 165 kms northeast of the main island of Tongatapu. These are the very waters where the Mutiny on the Bounty started when they put Captain William Bligh in the dinghy (1789). Each year Humpback whales migrate to these same waters from Antarctica where pregnant females give birth to their young calves and raise them until they are old enough to make the journey back south. This takes place between July and October of each year. Sea Change operates whale swim encounter boats as Tonga is one of the few places in the world where you can see these creatures close up, and have the chance to interact with them guided by highly trained staff who ensure the whales are not disturbed. Staff from Sea Change will meet you at the local airport in Ha’apai (30 minute flight from the main island) and will take you to Uoleva Island in one of their boats - as this is the only way to get there. Guests are accommodated in one of 6 beach facing fales, and the resort operates on
There are two different transom options. QUICK AND AGILE Power options are 150-200hp with our boat running a Yamaha 150. This gave a top speed of 41 knots and was ideally matched to the 970 kg (with engine) RIB. Acceleration, as expected, was rapid and we reached max rpm very quickly. The flat centre plank and wide strakes help in getting the boat unstuck from the water. On the calm water off Gulf Harbour, the Bluewater 710 sat very comfortably at around 5000 rpm @31.5 knots. You get the impression the bow is riding high, but the bullish front is quite deceiving. It’s a boat I found required little trim and hangs tight in the turns with no sliding. At rest or underway it is also extremely stable. It would easily handle a bit more power, but it doesn’t need it. The Explorer Bluewater is based on a 25 deg high lift grp hull which incorporates a central plank that runs well forward. The raised bow along with the large diameter tubes set on broad flanges make this a very dry boat in both a head and following sea. The Orca 866 Hypalon tubes have a maximum 580mm diameter and come with safety ropes as well as heavyduty wear covers. As the boat is going to be based in Tonga, where the temperatures can soar, pressure release valves have been fitted to the tubes. A variety of colour options are also available.

solar power and rain water - truly off the grid.
With the tubes rolled out a few degrees on the flange, the internal beam is increased to 1.65m. External beam is a generous 2.80m. The tubes are glued to the wide flange, and for extra wear resistance, there is a double layer of tape across the bow. The ply deck is glassed over, with all cavities doubling as buoyancy chambers, apart from a 210-litre polyethelene fuel tank aft. SUMMARY Since Andy Lamont brought Explorer Boats 12 months ago, he has done a lot of development on the model range, especially the jetboats (See PPB MayJun 2019 issue) and he says he is pleased with what they have achieved in the short time. “We have made several changes to our jet tender RIB range, and while this will remain an important part of the market for us, it is the jet tenders that we see our future growth”, says Andy. However, he adds that they still like to work with clients on the more customised designs, such as the Bluewater 710 for the Tongan based Sea Change Eco Retreat. (See Sidebar). With a couple of Bluewater 700 series already in the Pacific Islands and interest in more product, Explorer Boats are growing steadily on both the local and export fronts.

A BUYERS GUIDE TO 5.5M RIBS
BUILT FOR
PURPOSE A BUYERS GUIDE TO 5.5M RIBS
154 | RIB ANNUAL 2019
A couple of years ago we ran a feature on 6m RIBs, so this time we decided to look something a little smaller at 5.5m. Now while we are talking only around half a metre, you would be surprised just how that changes the whole dynamics of the layout. There is no substitute for space, and when it comes to centre consoles, it’s also about usability and being able to access all areas of the boat easily. The foot space between the console and the tubes is often very narrow and in some cases walking on the tubes is the only way forward.
M
OST 5.5m RIBs are centre consoles, and single outboard powered, although there are few exceptions, such as tiller steer open models or those with a small inboard diesel or petrol engine running a jet pump. It’s all about what size suits your purpose. The console needs to be of a reasonable size to be able to mount an MFD or simple fishfinder, instruments, switches and of course the steering wheel. Most utilise the console for dry storage and something to fit the stainless steel tubed bimini tower. Some use the space for an extra fuel tank or while not seen much in a 5.5m boat, a toilet. If the screen is high enough you also get some weather protection, but generally centre console boats leave you open to the weather. It’s just something you have to accept in this style of the boat no matter what the size. Seating options are vast, from no seats at all to swivelling buckets sets, bin seats and rear bench seats. Extra storage areas are usually restricted to beneath the floor in bin lockers or under a forward seat. Most 5.5m RIBs provide seating for 4-5, plus there is always the tubes to take the overflow of bodies. 5.5 RIBs are light enough so they don’t need a lot of horsepower to make them perform well and a single 90-115hp outboard is enough. There are some that also offer inboard jet units, which does encroach on your limited cockpit space but does give you a tremendous rear sun pad. The following are just some of the popular 5.5 RIBs available on the market
BUCCANEER 550 ENFORCER
A
relatively new player in the RIB market, Buccaneer offer two models, with the 550 Enforcer being the smaller of the two. The tubes are supplied and fitted by Southern Pacific, and you have the choice of Hypalon or PVC. The PVC is all welded, and the only glue is where it joins the 75mm hull flange. Two-thirds of the tube is outside the chine which gives you the advantage of the maximum internal and external beam. While the console is similar to the larger 640 Enforcer, it is narrower but still has space behind for two people to sit behind a very solid Perspex screen. The twin seats are mounted on a moulded storage box with a large rear hatch — great spot for fenders and your fishing tackle. The Buccaneer 550 Enforcer is a pure Kiwi RIB, designed to be as versatile as possible so that it doesn’t matter if you are fishing, diving, wakeboarding or using it as a tender, the boat is ideally suited to any task.

FI GLASS INVINCIBLE 5.6
A
NOTHER fibreglass trailer boat manufacturer to enter the RIB market, Christchurch based Fi Glass Boats has utilised the popular Fi-Glass Dominator hull as the basis of the Invincible 5.6. With over 3000 Dominator’s built, the hull has a proven track record. The layout is reasonably traditional with a large centre console and a variety of seating options. A solid stainless frame supports the bimini and doubles as rigid handholds. There is ample storage throughout, and the Invincible 5.6 is optioned with outboards from 90hp-150hp. The first boat was built in 2018 for the new Lyttelton Marina as a service and support boat, with a more ‘leisure’ based version released at the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show.

All are 2.3m external beam with an internal beam of 1.4m and use a twin pontoon system of butyl rubber inners covered by extra heavy duty PU/PVC outers. With Naiad’s large diameter pontoons providing extra seating, and the nonmarking rub strip means coming alongside white boats is problem free. Naiad’s use an alloy hull for low maintenance, durability and robustness. A carefully designed stepped chine in the hull keeps the buoyant tubes off the beach when pulled clear of the tide and provides its best high-speed planing when lightly loaded. Naiads in this size range are also available in open or centre console with custom layouts. Power is anything from 70-150hp.

TINO 550YC SEAFARER SF 550R
S
EAFARER are 100% Kiwi made inflatables by the
experienced Neil Curtling who has over 35 years experience in Inflatable boat manufacture, design. The boats are built using German Valmax PVC & TPU fabrics, which are welded with Seafarer’s unique duel lap seam welding system. A thermobond welding machine has been customised to suit their manufacturing systems to enable the most reliable high-quality welds and allow 100% thermobond welded tubes. The SF550R is based on an aluminium hull with all the fastening holes pre-drilled before powder coating to eliminate any corrosion. The layout can be fully customised with option seating and console arrangements.
T
HE Tino 550YC takes the concept of the Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) to the next level with solid core buoyancy (SBM) tubes on an alloy hull that while giving the impression of a standard RIB is a whole lot more. SBM is an un-puncturable, impact absorbing alternative to traditional RIB pneumatic tubes. It has the benefit of increased stability and minimal maintenance requirements, The Tino YC series boats are designed to be a true sporting cross-over boat with the ultimate durable package wrapped up in a luxury form. The hardtop is not only stylish, but it’s also very light, thanks to exotic construction. A tall safety glass screen provides excellent protection behind the console. A Command Center Console enables access to all areas of the boat ensuring every space is optimised. With unrivalled quality, the Tino 550YC is a watercraft for the boaty ready to discover uncharted innovation.

BOAT REVIEW | Seafarer SF430 R
The SF430 R is suitable for single outboards from 30-50hp.
162 | RIB ANNUAL 2019
Built From EXPERIENCE
Neil Curtling is unquestionably one of the most experienced and innovative inflatable boat constructors in the country and has been responsible for creating some outstanding RIBs over the past three decades. The Seafarer SF 430R is his latest creation.

BOAT REVIEW | Seafarer SF430 R
The U-Dek flooring is standard on the SF430 R.
Both the fuel tank and anchor tackle are hidden under the foredeck.
This is just one of a variety of console options.
164 | RIB ANNUAL 2019
While externally the new Seafarer SF430 R is not dissimilar to a lot of other console RIBS, it does have one particular and unique point of difference. After having built a custommade hot air welder, Seafarer Inflatables have developed hot air welding to a whole new level. Neil calls it the Dual Seal Construction System, which means all the tubes are sealed 100% both internally and externally. They have also developed this system to weld internally and externally both the cone ends and internal baffles. “The result for our customer is the very best air retention and a solid, reliable weld. The hot air welded cones and baffles are we believe a world first. Normally these are Radio Frequency welded which means they are not internally and externally sealed” says Neil. Seafarer is the first NZ manufacturer to manufacture polyurethane hot air welded airtight tubes. He adds that the polyurethane (TPU) fabrics are as good if not better than Hypalon and are 30% to 40% cheaper. “ We have a big demand for this impressive new product”, he adds. The tubes are glued and covered with an antipeel hinge to an all alloy 4mm hull designed by Neil and manufactured by Hibiscus Sheetmetals. All the fastening holes in the hulls are pre-drilled before powder coating to eliminate any corrosion. One of the other advantages is the time it takes to construct a boat. Neil points out that in the past a RIB this size took about 16 hours to assemble and now it’s down to 12 hours. The SF 430R is a development of the existing SF 380R which is half a metre longer but retains the same internal and external beam.
Like the 380R and the larger 550R and 600R, you have the option of everything from tiller steer to side, centre and jockey consoles. The first SF 430R was fitted with a lightweight yet durable alloy console, which is an innovation from the heavier grp consoles on previous models. The small dash is big enough for a couple of engine gauges, and there is space for a small bracket mounted fishfinder. The battery and isolating switch is installed in the console and is easily accessible via a hatch.
The jockey seating is big enough for two, and while our seating frame was open, there is space beneath for a chilly/isky bin, or you could close the whole area in for a big dry storage area. Neil points out that not only is the aluminium lighter, but it also gives them the flexibility to manufacturer more custom consoles with seating, facias, storage options and even screens adaptable to what an owner wants. In small RIBs, you are often faced with the tote tank taking up valuable space on the cockpit sole, so it was good to see that in the 430 R it is hidden away in a forepeak locker. The fuel line is routed under the U-Dek covered the floor and pops up at the transom, so there is no exposed hose. There is an optional seat cushion for the foredeck should you want some extra seating.
There is also an upstand to stop the fuel tank from moving aft in the locker and covering the anchor tackle space. Another innovation is the stainless steel bow roller, (previously GRP) although Neil says this is going to be changed for a powder coated alloy version.
The jockey console seat style is perfect for a RIB this size.
FUN TO DRIVE The 430 is suitable for single outboards from 30-50hp, with our test boat running a Mercury 40hp 2-stroke, supplied and fitted by Matakana Marine. Top speed is a very respectable 40 mph with a 40hp. If you have plans to carry 3-4 divers and all their gear, then I would probably go for 50hp. It’s a very easy boat to move through the water. The tubes offer the usual stability you would expect from an inflatable and in our test run off Gulf Harbour in a small confused choppy sea the 430 was an easy boat to drive. It’s a light boat with a shallow vee that is quite fun to drive. The SF430 R is a versatile rig that is suitable as a tender or family boat towing water toys, diving or fishing. At a trailer weight of around 300 kgs, it only needs a small to medium car to tow it. The SF430 R is one of four models the SF Series of console RIBs, starting with the SF600 R, the SF550 R and now the SF430 R and the SF380 R. the all up package with the jockey console comes out at around $23,000.

FLETCH’S TIPS Aaron Fletcher has years of experience as a Commercial Skipper and later as a marine educator. Every issue Fletch will share his Tips for the Pacific PowerBoat readers, which will range from simple fix ups to marine safety.
TIP #006
SMELLY BAIT BOARDS Clean your bait boards white vinegar & salt, pour a small amount of vinegar across your bait board and a generous amount of salt. Give it a good hard scrub and rinse. Next time you use the bait board it will be clean enough to eat off. Note: lemon juice with salt also works just as well.
TIP #007
DRY YOUR GEAR After you have given you fishing rods a good rinse down, always leave them upside down to dry, you will be amazed now much water will drain out of the reels.

crap as within a few months as the unsightly rust stains appear and will crack the gelcoat.
TIP #010
Quick Fix: replace all screws with marine grade
STAINLESS STEEL 316
stainless steel (316),
This was something my dad showed me: get yourself a clear tackle box, the one with a detachable top tray. Go to your local marine store, most of them have a massive nut & screw selection, and get yourself an assortment of S/Steel screws, self-tappers, washers & Nylock nuts, about a dozen of each. This will set you back about $40 $50, keep these stored in bags in the bottom of your screw box. Now you have a handy box of S/Steel screws ready to replace any old fastenings, keep the old S/Steel ones in the top tray to recycle as it’s always handy to have spare screws of odd sizes. Throw away any mild steel ones you find, do not keep these anywhere near your S/Steel fittings.
