Brief about nature of work: We saw the drawings of each project that we visited to know how drawings are constructed in real life, they took our comments on their designs and technical drawings and the structural engineers and architects explained for us more about each project. We went to many different sites in Dubai to learn more about working in real life and knowing more about the structure, time schedule, costs, and process of any project. We calculated the efficiency of each plan, to know if the project is going to cover its cost.

Report of the 1st week Position description 19-23 \ June \ 2016

Objective: Knowing the meaning of each position mentioned below and what is the job and target of each one of them to know how things in huge projects happen without having problems.

Client: Target: less time, less cost, achieve his aims in the building. -Chooses consultant by a tender, or commercial, or direct. -Chooses contractor by consultant, or direct, or by commercial -Chooses a PMC depending on the project if it needs a PMC or it doesn’t. - For example:

Consultant: Target: quality & materials as designed. -Gets information from the client as his needs & desires. -Makes a concept, one or more, to let the client choose, he shows the concept that he likes in a better way than the other one. -After the client chooses, the consultant tries to get the acceptance from the authority. -Chooses supervisions to make sure that the contractor is working correctly. -Makes the schematic -Makes the design details. -Finally, goes to the site to check the quality & materials if they are as he designed them. -Sometimes he chooses a contractor by tender. - For example:

Contractor: Target: high profit at low cost. -Takes the project’s design from the consultant & constructs it. -Using Estimators, contractor decides the number of gangs & machines. - For example:

PMC: Target: less time, less cost, achieve client’s goals to make him happy & satisfied with the results. -Should manage the time & work -Should keep the Contractor & Consultant working without stopping to finish on time in any possible way -Should know the commercial & technical aspects. - For example:

Lessons learned: To achieve a great project on time with the expected results we should put each person in his real position.

Report of the 2nd week Downtown’s projects tour 26-30 \ June \ 2016

Introduction: We went to some sites at the downtown walking on feet with the Project manager Eng. to discover what are the machines, materials, and methods used at the sites and to gain information from his great experience.

During the site visit & downtown tour: Crane Operator is involved in lifting and lowering heavy loads.

Concrete pump is a machine used for transferring liquid concrete by pumping.

Anchor is a device designed to support structures.

Piles are driven into the ground to support a structure, the relationship is between columns & the building; it supports the columns with the building.

Formwork is the term given to either temporary or permanent molds into which concrete or similar materials are poured.

Post Tensioning implies that the tension is applied to the tendons after hardening of concrete.

Pre Tensioning implies that the tension is applied to the tendons before casting the concrete.

Stone-cubes Works as a retaining wall or to test the strength of the piles.

Waterproof material should be covered with a material before it gets damaged.

Flat slab is a two-way reinforced concrete slab that usually does not have beams and girders, and the loads are transferred directly to the supporting concrete columns.

Slipping foam makes the shape looks the same from bottom to top. Jumping foam: smoothing the form of the building. Advertising panels that include LED lighting should have cooling system.

-Ventilation for underground parkings.

When the street is 70 m it’s called “Boulevard“. If we want to put plants on the terraces we should have at least 2 m in depth for soil and we should limit it with a box to prevent the roots from penetrating the building & destroy it. Fire hydrant is a connection point by which firefighters can tap into a water supply. It is a component of active fire protection.

Infrastructure includes plots that has different functions & belongs to different owners, & ROW (right of way) it belongs to authority with some plots also belonging to authority for power & water such as (DEWA) Lessons learned: We learned much information in the real life of site construction that will help us knowing how to design projects that can be constructed without problems in its structure. We learned a lot about the machines and materials.

Report of the 4th week The address residences sky view project report 17-21 \ July \ 2016

Introduction We went to the site of The Address sky view residence at Dubai downtown and it was organized by Eng. Ahmed.

Before going to the site we took all the safety precaution by wearing our helmets, safety shoes, and vests. We reached the site after walking for about 5 minutes from the office to the site. As I mentioned in my previous report; the project is hotel, residence, and serviced apartments. We took some photos to explain what we have learnt during this precious visit.

Objective  Learning and experiencing more about the construction in the site.  Learning how construction methods are done in the real life not just in the drawings.  Learning about the different types of machinery... (Cranes, concrete pumper, concrete mixer, scaffolding...etc.)  Explore different types of building materials.  Comparing our university lectures to how they are applied in real life.  Understanding the importance of safety and the things that should be taken before entering the site.

Photos and description

Tower one (60 floors) and tower two (56 floors)

Cladding methods: Unitized method: composed of large glass units that are created and glazed within a factory and then sent to the construction site. Stick method: Stick system a ladder system has mullions which can be split and then either clipped, or screwed together.

This photo is showing a truss of the bridge. Truss bridge: is a bridge whose load-bearing superstructure is composed of a truss, a structure of connected elements forming triangular units. In this project the bridge was divided into 3 parts constructed in the ground floor, the first part and the third one are going to be taken up to the 50th levels of the towers and the second part is going to be taken up to fill the gap between piece 1 and 3 and it will rest between them.

Crane (machine) A crane is a type of machine, equipped with a wire ropes or chains, and sheaves, that can be used both to lift and lower materials and to move them horizontally. It is mainly used for lifting heavy things and transporting them to other places.

Columns that stop at certain level Or Continue to higher levels

Aluminum crack control

We put them between plaster and concrete to prevent the crack that could happen between the two different materials.

Mesh between the layers of masonry units; To enhance the strength of the units and create better support.

Metal pieces on edges:

Pieces of metal on the edges to keep the shape of the angle sharp.

Service above Ceiling Service above Ceiling is containing the services like the power cables, sprinklers, cooling system, etc. and usually it is around 60 cm and hidden with panels after they put everything in its place.

Headboard

The headboard is a piece of furniture that attaches to the head of a bed.

Television holder: A wooden border to hold the TV that contains a space to the inside to put the receiver and another space to keep the cables inside in a tidy way

Helicopter concrete smoother

A machine that makes the surface of the concrete smooth and even.

Water supply Water supply network is a system of engineered hydrologic and hydraulic components which provide water supply. As we see in the figure; we have a tank that receives the water from the mains and part of it goes to the water heater then we can use it after it gets hot, and the other part goes to the sinks directly.

Elevators’ lobby:

It’s 2.5 m to provide proper circulation for the people; it also has 5 elevators to avoid the rush on the elevators. It also has a magnetic door system for safety that closes automatically in case of fire.

Wall finishing: Cladding is a non-loadbearing skin or layer attached to the wall. It is a key element in the aesthetic appeal of the tower and directly influences both building cost and property value.

This is a partly individual building that will be a car showroom.

Car showroom: is a public exhibition of current automobile models, debuts, concept cars, or out-of-production classics.

Chutes Chute: is a large tube that is used to move trash or laundry to a central collection point. Most chutes include a square or rectangular door that opens like a kitchen cabinet or oven door. Chutes typically have one door per floor for easy access.

Lessons learned

Finally, the site visit gave us the real feeling of working in real life and we experienced the environment of construction. We realized how working at the site is more different and difficult than how we expected . The site visit gave us many information that can’t be gained without practicing, that many engineers gain after graduating. This visit helped for better understanding of the structure and which considerations we should take in the future as architects while designing a project. We realised how much we should take care about ourselves and about the workers there at the site, because safety is always first.

Report of the 5th week Dubai creek harbour 24-26 \ July \ 2016

Introduction We went to Dubai creek harbour to know more about master planning and how huge areas get designed and what they include.

Objective Knowing how to design large plots and make their construction, and how to make a strong district with harmony.

Some general information: Located: in the center of Dubai City, Ras Al Khour, in the flourishing landmark at the Island District of Dubai Creek Harbour.

Size: Three times the size of Mega Community Downtown Dubai.  It will be joining by various art and cultural centers, commercial projects, corporate hubs, retail malls, commercial shopping complexes and upper class residential communities.  Crafted with eco-friendly, energy efficient, and meticulous designing along with impeccable amenities.  Drafted by Atkins Global.  Planned to have one of the best waterfront destinations of the world.  Planned to have world highest observation tower.  Planned to have world largest mall, (bigger than Dubai mall).

The Observation Tower  Architect: Santiago Calatrava Valls  The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour is set to be 928-metre.  wind tests were crucial in defining the final height and design aspects, while the project’s Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava Valls added that they "were an important component in the structural design stage, and we have deployed innovative engineering techniques to confirm the strength of the new icon".  Seismic studies were done on the local ground conditions "to guarantee the maximum safety and stability of the building.

The six waterfront residential towers form part of the island district at Dubai Creek Harbour.

 The residences towers are 6 towers, three on the south and another three on the north mirrored from the south side, all of them are connected with one podium.  With the soaring iconic cityscape enhancing the view from the window, these apartments possess a superlative lifestyle like no other.  30 - 35 storey residential towers  One to three-bedroom apartments  Apartment areas ranging from 880 - 2,154 sq. ft.

Lessons learned We learned how large plots can be managed and designed, and how huge projects can be planned and constructed to provide a strong district.

Report of the 6th week Dubai opera house 31-July – 2 Aug \ 2016

N,,

General information  2000 seat with multi format, like concert, theatre, and celebration mode.  The seat balconies of the auditorium can move according to the purpose, so does the chairs of the auditorium; they can go down to the basement by a lift that pushes them down. 

Three floor configurations + 2 basements
