A CHAT WITH THE WONDERFUL...

WHAT IS OR WHO ARE STUDIO RUIG? Concept? Klaartje Glashorster, Inge Hendriks and Sophie Soons, the three designers behind studioRUIG, spend few words on it but allow their sharp intuition and creative urge to speak for them. And so this ambitious Dutch start up label blossomed into a successful fashion brand in only six years time. studioRUIG captures the zeitgeist in unpretentious yet carefully designed collections with an androgynous sensuality, pure materials and a strong use of color. Leather is a favorite offering the ‘RUIG’ component, which is Dutch for ‘rough’, finished in the most simple way possible it’s natural properties come to life. It is the metaphor for studioRUIG’s success: unaffected and fearless fashion. HOW DID IT ALL GET STARTED? At the last year of our education at School of the Arts Utrecht (HKU), we started thinking about our future and decided we all wanted to start our own company/brand, but not alone. So, that’s where we found each other. We started immediately after graduation in 2008 (all with a lot different collections), searching for a studio. We found one in

STUDIO RUIG

Eindhoven. One without heating system and sewerage. So, we were designing in our skiing outfits with clouds coming out of our mouths. After two years, we moved to a bit less pour building and last year we moved to our beautiful new building at Strijp-S; with our own brand store combined with our studio. TELL US SOMETHING MORE ABOUT YOUR SS15 COLLECTION. Bright colors combined with crispy white. Natural classical materials as silk and viscose jerseys and newer “sporty” ones as well, of course in combination with butter soft leather and suede. The color palette makes it definitely summer. THIS IS OUR SECOND SEASON PARTNERING UP. WHY MONAR? Because Monar is exactly the store fitting to our style: classy, new and at the same time “rough” (RUIG). WHEN BROWSING THROUGH PREVIOUS COLLECTIONS I NOTICED AN (AFFORDABLE!) AMOUNT OF BASICS WITH SMART FINISHING AND A STRONG FOCUS ON MATERIALS/ LITTLE CUTS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE. HOW DO

YOU KEEP REINVENTING YOURSELF EVERY SEASON? By searching and discussing with the three of us, we’ve never long issues: always a majority. Two to one. But at the same time we’re with three heads full of ideas, six eyes to see new things. And every season we learn a lot more and more to experience what works and what not. WHAT MAKES A STRONG LOOK? We’re very different in length and sizing and stuff, but when we’re happy with the three of us, immediately, about the fit, the colors and especially about the material combination we’re almost sure upfront about the power of a look. WHAT’S THIS SEASONS MUSTHAVE? Skirt Ries; a knee-length skirt of jersey at the back and butter soft leather at the front; because of the division in material it’s a wallet-friendly piece as well, without losing it’s specialty. ONE LAST QUESTION; SS OR FW? FW, we definitely love winter; because of the depth in materials and the ability of wearing layers.

OPEN CALL ARTIST

When we published the OPEN CALL for emerging artists back in December we got nearly a hundred applications with a lot of interesting stuff to choose from but one caught my eye immediately. When we met the modest Lisa Rouchet she proposed to shoot our spring summer collection and so we did…

Lisa Rouchet

CAN YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF? I am a 23 year old photography student based in Antwerp. Currently I am in my final bachelor year at Narafi College for Science & Art located in Brussels, and in the meantime I am doing my internship at Tomas Vandecasteele. INVESTIGATING YOUR WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA, I STUMBLED UPON YOUNG BUT STRONG LOOKING (OFTEN NAKED) WOMEN. IN STUDIO OR LIVINGROOMS. WHAT LEADS YOU TO THESE IMAGES? I am fascinated by people as ‘human beings’, in their purest form. When I am in process of developing these series it is about capturing the environnement, their character and as well as adding some awkwardness. I like to make pictures which are completely the opposite of who I am, I see it as a challenge. YOU’RE STILL YOUNG BUT ALREADY MANAGED TO ACCOMPLISH A RECOGNIZABLE IMAGERY. WHAT MAKES A STRONG PHOTO TO YOU? It is difficult to describe but I think for me, a photograph is interesting when it doesn’t need a story. It’s a good photograph when it speaks for itself. When I look at it and it gets this woweffect.

I HEARD YOU WERE WORKING ON A SERIES ABOUT YOUTH CULTURE IN ANTWERP. CAN YOU TELL ME SOMETHING MORE ABOUT THAT? Antwerp is a living city, famous for it’s nightlife such as club Noxxx or Café d’Anvers etc… but I’m more of a cosy party person. I go to smaller parties where I meet all kinds of people. Individuals who care less about being judged and rather do their own thing, which is appreciated by their incrowd. Throughout the years we became sort of family and I started to document these “family parties”. CLIMBING UP THE LADDER, HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE? After my internship and final bachelor project I’m curious what to do next but I certainly want to keep going, that’s for sure. My dream since I started shooting people is to work as a fashion photographer for well known fashion magazines or designers. However, to begin my career I would like to intern at inspiring photographers. WHAT INSPIRES YOU AND MOTIVATES YOU TO KEEP GOING WITH EVERYONE BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER THESE DAYS? I really like what I’m doing and the creative people I’m working with. They inspire me.

I’m meeting so many interesting people and I’m learning new things everyday that I feel bad when I’m not creating. WANNA TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THE MODELS? Finding faces that correspond with the story of the collection is fundamental for photoshoots. As I am acquainted with both models, I was more than happy to work together with them. They are not the typical commercial faces, something I was looking for. I think they did an amazing job! WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE COLLECTION/ ANY FAVOURITE PIECE? I really like the collection and the colors. It’s cool, sexy and feminine. A lot of black and white and some soft colors for the hot summer days. For me it’s too hard to pick one favorite piece since this collection is totally my style and I’d probably pick everything!
