New $364,000 fire engine for Cooma Member for Monaro and Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan last Friday officially handed over a new $364,000 fire engine to firefighters at Cooma Fire Station to enhance the local community’s fire and emergency protection. “This new fire engine is a significant investment in the safety of the Cooma community,” Mr Whan said. “The Keneally Government is continuing to provide our firefighters with modern and safe vehicles for their vital work protecting NSW families. “This new engine will help ensure our firefighters continue to have the necessary resources to help them protect residents, property, and the environment in and around Cooma,” he said. Mr Whan said the vehicle was

part of the largest roll-out of new and upgraded fire engines in the Fire Brigades’ history. The vehicle features a high pressure pump capable of delivering 3,000 litres of water a minute for fire fighting and a foam system for fighting chemical, petrol and bush fires and reducing water use. It also meets strict emissions standards. NSWFB Commissioner Greg Mullins said the new fire engine would further enhance Cooma firefighters’ ability to respond to fires and other emergencies. “The 17 firefighters stationed at Cooma responded to 154 fire and emergency calls in 2009/10 and were also actively involved in educating people about fire safety, carrying out more than 150 community safety activities over the year,” he said. “Fleet upgrades such as this ensure that our firefighters have the best equipment and the latest technology to ensure the safety and protection of local communities”. Adaminaby Snowy Scheme Collection

The Snowy Museum at Adaminaby. This Sunday, the Adaminaby Snowy Scheme Collection Committee will hold an open day at the museum site in Adaminaby to share the progress and the vision of the project. The open day starts at 10.30am and will be followed by the committees’ annual general meeting and refreshments.

After eight years of trying, the committee has succeeded in building the Museum in spite of three changes of design, a change of Government, and many other difficulties, on a shoestring. It has accumulated an interesting collection of items involved in the construction of the scheme and associated life at the time so the museum can tell the stories of the people, and life in camps, planning and engineering etc. The Adaminaby Snowy Scheme Collection Committee is a group of volunteers who are attempting to bring together and preserve the history, and tell the story, of the building of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme. A month before this a group of district residents formed a committee aiming to retain in Adaminaby as much of this history as possible. In a frantic scramble before the auction, the committee raised $40,000, which enabled them to purchase eight of the 10 items earmarked as most historically important. These formed the basis of the Adaminaby Snowy Scheme Collection, and many items have been added since. In time, the committee structure was formalised, is now a fully incorporated body and has Tax deductible gift recipient status. The Strategic Objectives are to: • Create a sustainable community enterprise, which tells the story of the construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme; • Establish the museum in Adaminaby - a yearround attraction, highlighting the early days of the project with significant examples of the machines and materials used to build the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme; and to tell the stories of what life was like for the many migrants who came from post war Europe in 1949. • Establish a unique facility, which provides employment, increased visitation and economic benefit to the Adaminaby community and the Snowy Mountains region.

Over those eight years there have been many ups and downs which have stretched the time-line considerably, particularly in regard to funding after initial pledging of very generous support from two national corporates, these organisations subsequently both withdrew their offers which basically meant a major down-sizing of the original You are all welcome to come and inspect our Centre, meet our staff vision. and have FUN! A Jindabyne resident speaks with State Parliamentary Secretary Penny Sharpe and Member for Monaro Steve Whan at the CountryLinkUp in Jindabyne on Friday. More than 70 people from all sectors of the community, attended the CountryLinkUp meeting initiated by Member for Monaro Steve Whan and hosted by Parliamentary Secretary for Transport, Penny Sharpe which was held last Friday, at Jindabyne Bowling Club. It was the largest of the 14 CountryLinkUp meetings held across the State and the attendance took the organisers by surprise. Hitherto, the record for attendance was 46 at Young. Ms Sharpe announced that she was here to listen, and listen she did to the 23 speakers expressing the views of the majority of the audience. Some of the issues raised included the lack of public transport between Jindabyne (and the mountains) and Cooma - apart from the school bus service; the need for connections of commercial services with existing CountryLink services; poor disabled access on to buses; the need for a toilet on the service due to the ageing population, during school holidays there is no school bus service; social isolation impacts; inability of people held on drink driving charges unable to access mandatory courses held in Cooma; environmental issues and the cost of petrol.

It was pointed out that the tourism backpacker market would benefit from a CountryLink service into the mountains. Ms Sharpe agreed to investigate the summer connections, look at what is possible, cost and review. Other issues to be investigated included bus stations and train stations Snowy River Shire General Manager, Joe Vescio stressed that Cooma was the service centre for government services and hospitals. Transport was needed for people in the shire to reach them. The Snowy River Shire is one of the fastest growing shires in NSW and that the birth statistics at Cooma hospital confirm this. There is a need for planning by the Department. In conclusion, Ms Sharpe said that she would write a report outlining actions which would make things work and address the broader issues. The report will be a public document and available by the end of the year. Last Wednesday September 1 the year 11 and 12 TVET Hospitality students from Monaro High and Jindabyne Central School, showcased the skills they have learnt this year to an invited group of people for a three course lunch. The lunch was prepared and cooked by the year 11 students with the year 12’s being at the front of house. The students completing this course qualify for a certificate II in Commercial Cookery after completing their two years at TAFE as well as having their marks go towards their HSC.

In recognition of Legacy Week, the Lions Club of Cooma has made a further donation of $1000 to the CoomaBombla Legacy group. This donation was part of continuing fundraising through the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lucky Jokerâ&#x20AC;? competition at the Cooma Hotel on Friday nights. The compeititon is fully sponsored by the Cooma Hotel, with the Lions Club selling the tickets and distributing the entire proceeds to six nominated local charities. At present these are Legacy, Salvation Army, St Vincent de paul, Sir William Hudson Memorial Centre, Commonwealth Bank manager Col Cook hands a $100 cheque to Legacy Yallambee Lodge and treasurer Denis Feaver. Emergency services report Police At 11.45pm on Saturday night six males assaulted another male at East Jindabyne. The 32-year-old received lacerations to his face requiring eight sutures. Police were not informed of the incident until 1pm on Sunday afternoon. Due to the delay in reporting the incident police enquiries have been hampered, however their enquiries are continuing.

Tanya Janota and her new ‘do’ with some of her charges at Lambie Street Pre School. The day for Tanya to shave her hair has been and gone and she is now sporting a beautiful no maintenance number three haircut! Tanya was raising funds for the Westmead Children’s hospital and her goal was $3000. With the support of not only local people and businesses Tanya has surpassed that amount to raise an incredible total of $5000. This is way beyond Tanya’s expectations and she is overwhelmed by the support that has been shown. There were four business houses that contributed $200 each and were the highest amounts donated, so they had the honour of being the first to start the shaving process on Tanya’s hair. These businesses were High Country Communications, Alan’s Funerals, Countrywide Wool and Birdsnest. About 80 to 100 people turned up to watch the proceedings, show support, and help shave Tanya’s hair.

She said, “I thought I’d be wearing bandanas and scarves but it’s actually quite liberating. A little cold sometimes but I can always put a beanie on. Some of the kids keep rubbing and patting my hair because it’s so short.” The hospital has been in contact and are thrilled by the amount raised and say a big thank you to the community for their support. ”I’m quite proud of what’s been achieved, not by me, I only had my hair cut but by everyone else’s generosity. I wasn’t nervous about having my hair cut but about giving a speech in front of all of the people, it came from the heart and all went well. Now we can donate a substantial amount to the hospital and it will go towards research and help support those families who need it. I would like to say a personal thank you to all my family, friends and the people I don’t even know who supported me and for their generous donations. All the little donations put together made up this huge amount. Thank you.”

In praise of the mayor Editor, I would like to publicly acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our current mayor, Dean Lynch. From the civic reception for our Winter Olympians, Dancing With The Stars fundraiser, his recent involvement at the Country and Regional Living Expo, and numerous others, Dean has gone above and beyond to ensure and encourage the future prosperity of this town. It is refreshing to have someone such as Dean in the Council, representing the rate payers of the Cooma-Monaro Shire, who holds a positive attitude to the the town

he lives in and believes in it’s future growth. He has demonstrated to us all through his positive actions towards the growth and improvement of Cooma, that he is more than willing and capable of fulfilling the position of Mayor of Cooma-Monaro Shire for the next term. I am not criticising the efforts of past members of Council, but I feel that Mayor Lynch has brought a breath of fresh air into the Council, and I would like to wish him the very best in the up and coming mayoral election. There’s no underestimating the Australian spirit. After being wiped out by bushfires in 2009, the people of Marysville, in Victoria have now faced floods. But, as seen on the telly on

Monday, their spirit remains undaunted. A blackboard sign outside a local businesss had written on it “temporarily closed due to fire; flood; pestilence’ with a big tick alongside flood. Let’s hope the third box never gets a tick.

The Aussie spirit was pretty strong in the mountains, too, with diehard skiers insisting on heading for the slopes for some spring snow…. Tempered with some rain and a good old hurricane-force blast for good measure.

Poor old New Zealand - once known as the “Land of the Long White Cloud’ The Postman believes she is changing her name to the shaky isles. It could be said, with some certainty now, that New Zealand Rocks!

But what a horrible mess in Christchurch – all those historic buildings damaged – some beyond repair. Add that to financial collapse last week and our close neighbour has had a lousy week really……hope things pick up soon.

Council defends asbestos removal at Polo Flat

The former SES building at Polo Flat has now been removed. On Tuesday August 24, CoomaMonaro Shire Council was notified of a complaint lodged with Workcover regarding the removal of bonded asbestos materials and the demolition of the former SES buildings at its Polo Flat Road depot. Workcover inspectors attended the site on Wednesday August 25 and again on Friday August 27. Documentation provided to Workcover by Council included copies of an assessment and inspection report from a licensed asbestos removalist made prior to the calling for quotations, copies from Asbestos Registers held at the Cooma Landfill depot, weighbridge receipts, environmental assessments, and details of the relevant licences held by the contractor engaged to undertake the work. “Council has been pleased to respond to all requests for information from Workcover, and we understand that the contractor engaged to undertake the work is complying with all directions and requests from Workcover following their investigation of the complaint” Cooma-Monaro Mayor, Dean Lynch, said. “We are satisfied that the contractor has discharged his duties in accordance with his licence requirements”. Council engaged a licensed asbestos removalist to undertake an

assessment of the building prior to calling for quotations for its removal, to ensure that areas of possible risk were properly identified prior to any works being undertaken. “A complaint was also made to the EPA, and documentation has been provided to prove that Council has correctly and properly managed the disposal of asbestos waste at its landfill facility, in accordance with our EPA license requirements”, Cr Lynch said. Council is currently assisting with arrangements to engage an occupational hygienist to inspect and assess the site, in accordance with a request from Workcover. In the meantime, the site is being managed in accordance with best practice methods to ensure that any risk to council staff or neighbouring properties is completely minimised. There are a number of properties in the Polo Flat area, including ones in close proximity to the council depot site, which have previously been identified as potentially containing asbestos products, such as old fibro roof and wall sheeting, old fibro water pipes, electrical switchboards and the like. Providing products such as these are properly managed, the risk of harm is virtually eliminated, however, all necessary precautions should be taken with the handling, removal and disposal of these products.

Adaminaby Snowy Scheme Collection Continued from page 2... Funding was secured from the Snowy River Shire, NSW and Federal Governments and we have had many donations of stories, collections as well as private donations. An Op Shop was established and runs as a sub-committee of the Museum Committee and has meant we are not eating into our capital to cover smaller administrative outlays. The “Friend’s Newsletter” is produced approximately quarterly – and keeps our loyal supporters in the loop. Major delays we have experienced include: • a demand by the RTA that we establish a specific turning lane off the highway at a cost of $90,000, which was subsequently overcome by an arrangement to share an entrance with the adjacent Adaminaby Bowling and Sports Club; • the money pledged from the Federal Government was likely to be lost pending a lengthy review, by the then newly installed Rudd Govt, of all programs

under the Rural & Regional Partnerships Program – we managed to survive when a huge percentage of the programs did not; • the discovery that the Shire plans regarding the exact specifications of the mains water pipe were inaccurate and a demand that we pay the $30,000 to correct it – which was resolved following numerous representations to Council and the fact that common sense prevailed in the end, despite strong protestations from some Jindabyne based Councillors. The executive committee has changed several times over that period and currently consists of Jill Madew, Paul Middleton, Bev Schoenegg, Antony Harvey, Peter Taylor, Tim Corkill and Maureen Bennetts. We will soon add to that our new best friend Ed Schaepman – who has agreed to be the Museum’s voluntary Curator.

Cooma CWA celebrates Awareness Day The president of the Cooma CWA branch, Kaye Anderson, welcomed a pleasing number of members to the August meeting. There were two apologies. During the month the members attended presentations on Scotland at Cooma Public School and Snowy Mountains Christian School. It was wondeful to see the efforts of the pupils in displaying their posters and artefacts of Scotland and serving morning tea of food from the country of study. Reports of the group council meeting recently held at Cooma were given. Important points from that meeting included information about the 2011 State Conference which is to be held at Nowra, fund raising for the group, the CWA Awarenss Day and the group scholarships.

A cheque for $1000 was presented to the dialysis committee to help with the purchase of special chairs for the unit at the Cooma hospital. The cookery competition resulted in a first place to Barbara Scanes for the Amy Johnson cake and a second to Kaye Anderson., Kaye also won the prize for her collection of biscuits. The competition for the September meeting is for a butterscotch cake, the recipe to be found in the June Journal. The next meeting of the branch will be held on Monday September 13 at the Cooma Country Cub. The friendship hour begins at 11am followed by BYO lunch and the business meeting at 12.30pm. All interested ladies are most welcome to attend.

NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers from across the Monaro area will throw open the doors to their stations on Saturday, September 25, for RFS open Day. Fire Mitigation officer for the Monaro team, Fred Nichols, said this year’s open day mark the start of Bush Fire Awareness Week, which aims to raise awareness of the risks of bushfires and ways to protect yourself from fire. The following RFS stations on the Monaro will participate in RFS Open Day: Adaminaby from 10am; Bombala from 10am; Bungarby from 10am; Colinton from 10am; Michelago from 10am and Numeralla from 10am. “RFS Open Day is a fun event for families and for the volunteers who enjoy opening up their station and showing the local community what they do”, Mr Nichols said.

“It’s a great opportunity for the community to learn about the role volunteers play at all types of emergencies, with many brigades holding practical demonstrations. “Our volunteers are a part of the community and open day is a chance for the community to see what our volunteers do every day. “For children and adults alike, it’s also a chance to learn how to protect you and your family from fire, in time for the bushfire season. “I’d encourage all local residents to come along on Saturday September 25 and join in the fun and thank our RFS volunteers for the work they do”, Mr Nichols said.

Public view sought on Perisher Services precinct development The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is seeking the view of the community on a proposal to build a waste transfer station, workshop, office building, police station and associated road access adjacent to the Perisher Valley ambulance, fire station and helipad. NPWS Manager of Municipal Services, Andrew Logan, said the proposal was the culmination of a long history of consultation associated with the development of the Perisher Range Resorts Master Plan in 2001. “Under the proposal all of these essential services would be located in the one precinct,” Mr Logan said. “A major element of the proposal is the establishment of a Waste Transfer Station to move away from the current practice of scattered and unsightly industrial bins to a centralised waste facility for Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes and Charlotte Pass. The waste transfer station will prevent waste from being blown across the landscape and reduce noise by containing it within the building. This will ultimately remove the ugly waste bins from the view of visitors as they enter Perisher Valley and Smiggin Holes. “The Waste Transfer Station will allow us to better manage waste collection, sorting, recycling and transportation in a more efficient, safe and cost effective manner. We will also be moving to a full kerb side waste collection service within Perisher Valley and Smiggin Holes. A kerb side collection system will ultimately reduce oversnow and wheeled vehicle movements around the various villages “We understand there are a range of views on the location of the Waste Transfer Station. We need to continue to improve waste management at Perisher and with an award winning Environmental Management System for Perisher Range there’s an obligation on all stakeholders to continue to improve performance.

“This development is being assessed under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act (1979) through a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) that canvasses a range of site options and their potential environmental impacts.” Mr Logan said. NPWS is holding a public information session on the proposal on Thursday September 9 at the Man from Snowy River Hotel in Perisher Valley at 2pm. All interested stakeholders are invited to attend to find

out more about the proposal and how they can participate in the process and have their say. The proposal will be on public exhibition from September 2 until October 1 and can be viewed at the Queanbeyan Government Service Centre, The Snowy Region Visitor Centre, The Department of Planning in Jindabyne, NPWS Municipal Services in Perisher Valley and the Tumut Visitor Centre.

High Court grants Spencer right to appeal Shannons Flat farmer, Peter Spencer has had a good result in his High Court hearing in Canberra last week. Mr Spencer, who staged a 52-day hunger strike earlier this year, has been fighting State and Federal Governments over what he considered unfair restrictions on his land due to the Native Vegatation Act. He has claimed the legislation has locked up his farming land and made it unprofitable, without giving him fair compensation for the lose of its use. On Wednesday September 1, the Full Bench of the High Court held that the case Spencer v Commonwealth of Australia should not have been summarily dismissed in the Federal Court in March 2009 on the grounds that Mr Spencer had “no reasonable prospect” of successfully prosecuting the proceedings (under section 31A of the Federal Court of Australia Act). The Full Bench judges unanimously held that the case had not been a suitable one for the application of S31A of the Federal Court of Australia Act. Mr Spencer has argued that Commonwealth Acts formed part of a scheme or device with the States designed to avoid the restrictions on Commonwealth legislative power found in s 51(xxxi) of the Constitution which requires just terms payment for property acquired by the Commonwealth (carbon sequestered to meet Australia’s commitment to the Kyoto Protocol Agreement). As a result Spencer is arguing that his property was rendered

valueless when the resulting NSW Native Vegetation legislation was used to stop him clearing regrowth vegetation from his property at Shannons Flat. On Wednesday, The High Court granted Mr Spencer leave to appeal and allowed the appeal with costs being awarded against the Commonwealth dating back to 2007. Wednesday’s finding also allows for Spencer to have discovery of Commonwealth and State documents. The case will now be heard in the High Court. The award of costs is also naturally a huge relief for Peter Spencer. Mr Spencer says he has been robbed of his property rights. “What they’ve done is lock up my land and that of 30,000 other farmers, so they can meet a Kyoto target instead of taking that from power stations that produce the pollution,” he said. “We’re being used to mitigate another’s pollution.” When questioned about his ability to fight on, Peter Spencer vowed to do exactly that “I will keep on fighting, for as long as possible.” Wednesday’s ruling is a wonderful win for Spencer and his small largely volunteer legal team against the concerted might of the legal departments of the Commonwealth and all the States. It is also giving heart to farmers all over Australia and will legitimise and reinvigorate the public awareness campaign started by Peter Spencer during his 52-day hunger strike from November 2009 to January 2010.

Riposte Lisa Ashurst We might be into the first week of Spring but I was still playing chicken with the snow traffic last Sunday. Not by choice mind you, because when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all said and done I would much rather just cross the highway, grab the papers from Mick at the servo and then nick back home. But on Sundays during the snow season itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit hit and miss trying to get from one side of the road to the other. The idea is to spot a gap in the 4WD traffic and make a run for it. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re lucky youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll actually come out in one piece on the other side. Once there, you do whatever it is you want to do and then itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s back to the side of the highway, searching frantically for a break in the long line of cars so you can get back home. You can be standing there for a while. The idea is to do all your stuff on the other side of the highway from Monday till Thursday because from Friday through to Sunday we are seen as a hindrance to those speeding to the snow fields and if we insist

on trying to cross the road, drivers have to swerve to miss us which could result in them arriving at the snow a few minutes later than planned. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assuming they will swerve. Now while I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a pressing desire to end up as roadkill, I do have a thing about the Sunday papers and feel a bit lost if I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t while away some time on a Sunday morning with a cuppa and the papers spread out before me, hence the dance with the traffic on winter Sunday mornings. But why should we have to risk life and limb in our own town? Why doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t it occur to those whizzing through at several kph above the speed limit that the figure standing at the side of the road looking left to right and back again would actually like to cross? Would it hurt to slow down and let them? I swear some of them actually speed up if they see someone about to step out onto the tar. Whatever, there I was again last Sunday playing should I run or should I wait and in the finish I just went for it but it drives me nuts and I swear that by the end of the season Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m ready to rip a couple of 4WDs apart with my teeth! Just give me five minutes with some of those #%&@* drivers!

The Australian National Service Memorial in Canberra, which was completed recenty, will be dedicated by her Excellency the Governor-General Quentin Bryce, at 11.30am today. The memorial is located near the entrance to the Australian War Memorial. It honours the 212 National Servicemen who died on active service â&#x20AC;&#x201C; two in Borneo and 210 in Vietnam â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and commemorates the 287,000 young men called up in two schemes between 1951 and 1972 for service in the Army, Navy and Air Force. A plaque will tell the history of Australian National Service. The memorial was designed by leading Australian architect Richard Johnson of Johnson

Pilton Walker. Members of the Cooma-Monaro Sub-Branch of the National Servicemensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s association will attend the dedication. Nashos in Bombala The Nashos will meet in Bombala this month. The Cooma-Monaro Sub-Branch of the National Servicemenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Association usually meets in Cooma, but periodically meets in other high country centres. The meeting will be held in the Bombala RSL Club on Sunday September 19, commencing at 10.30am. All Nashos and interested locals will be very welcome.

Raglan Gallery looks forward to expansion

With another successful Briscoe Award at the Raglan Gallery in Cooma last Saturday, the Raglan committee is looking forward to the start of work on a new building on the site. The plans to turn the Raglan into a regional gallery were shelved after a number of difficulties were unable to be resolved, such as complaints from neighbours about increased traffic and noise. This development application was subsequently withdrawn from Cooma-Monaro Shire Council. However, that left the problem of the funding which had been secured to build the regional gallery, as well as a need for more space for the gallery to stage bigger exhibitions. The Raglan Management board has now engaged architect Frank Espano work to work with it to develop plans for a new development application for the new building. Mr Espano’s plans include a large extension to the gallery, through a new, separate building. The plans allow for a large workshop-

exhibition area, an open-air amphitheatre, plenty of car parking and an undercover ceramics display area There will also be solar panels on the roof for more economical and environmentally-friendly operations. There is also an opportunity to link all three buildings and gain additional hanging and exhibition space. Board chairman, Andrew Dawes, said he was looking forward to a positive response from council to the development application. He said the extra room would allow the gallery to hand larger works and would allow a better use of the facility. He said he was confident the new plans would be accepted by council and there would be support from neighbours. Mr Dawes thanked all supporters of the project, especially those who have made generous financial contributions to see it through to fruitition.

The new licensee’s of the Royal Hotel on the corner of Sharp and Lambie Streets Cooma are settling into their new roles and enjoying meeting some of the local people. Craig and Sarah Linden along with daughter Alyssa have made the tree change from Sydney. Sarah is originally from Jindabyne but has lived in Sydney for the past 10 years. Craig has wanted to get out of the city for a long time and when the opportunity arose for them to take over the lease on the pub they jumped at the chance. Now they are closer to Sarah’s family and are finding Cooma a great friendly community minded town to bring their daughter up in. Both Craig and Sarah come from management positions in the paper industry and this is the first time they will be managing a pub. Sarah’s parents John and Shauna Hulbert from Jindabyne actually bought the lease on the pub when it was auctioned. “Dad has always wanted to have a family pub,” said Sarah “We’re keeping all the original staff.” The Lindens have had a busy couple of weeks learning the ropes from the previous managers who stayed on to help them out for a while. Shannon Stockheim is the new chef and he is keeping the basic ‘traditional pub food’. He will be introducing a ‘spring’ menu and will follow this theme through the seasons. The bistro is open Wednesday to Sunday at the moment for lunch from 12pm-2pm and dinner 6pm-8pm. “We just want to keep the customers happy and the regulars coming back for more said Craig, we are still going to have much the same as it was before with finger food on the bar on Friday nights, badge draw on Wednesday nights, the Joker draw on Friday night, raffles of meat and beer through the Historic Automobile Club also on Friday night. There is happy hour every Monday to Friday from 5-6pm. We will continue all the sponsorships that are already in place for example the Rugby Union Club, cricket and darts on Wednesday nights.” The pub also offers cheap accommodation, whether you’re staying ‘in town’ for the night or you going to the snow or on a motorcycle road trip. All rooms are your classic pub style rooms, with some opening up onto the balcony. Rooms start at $25 per person for a shared room, $35 per person for a single room and $55 for a double room, all with shared bathroom facilities. There is also a secure shed out the back to lock up your motorcycle and a large off street car park to leave your car in. Why not hold your function at the Royal; there are two areas, either upstairs on the balcony or in the fully restored gorgeous dining room off the main bistro area. The Royal Hotel is a local landmark in the Snowy Mountains Region; constructed in 1858 the hotel retains its historic grandeur with its stonewalls, verandah and attractive streetscape. Affectionately known, as "Bundy's" after Mabel Bundy who owned and operated the hotel for several decades the Royal is the oldest hotel in the Snowy Mountains Region celebrating 152 years in 2010.

Successful 11th Briscoe award The 11th annual Briscoe Award Exhibition was opend at the Raglan Gallery, Cooma last Saturday. Cooma-Monaro Mayor Dean Lynch opened the show, while former Cooma artist, now Manager of Marketing and Promotions with the National Gallery, Suzi Campbell, was the judge. This year there were two sections – local and open, with Bernadette Natter taking first prize in the local section. The open award was won by Gerry Nowland. Mrs Campbell said she was impressed by the quality of the artwork in the competition. She said having just returned from a tropical

holiday to a grey Monaro she had been impressed by the colour and variety of the art, from bold bright abstracts to detailed botanical drawings. Mrs Campbell said the exhibition had been an inspiration and challenging to judge because of its diversity. Gunyah sale grossed $86,740 Gunyah Hereford and Poll Hereford Stud conducted a successful on-property sale last Friday. Stud principal Robert Hain said he was very happy with the result of the sale which saw horned and poll bulls sold, as well as heifers. The sale sold nine from nine stud heifers offered, unjoined (two age groups - four x 15-16 mths heifers and five x 9-11mths heifers) which grossed $6750 and averaged $750. The heifers topped at $1000 to Micheal Green of Cooma, for a 15-month-old Hereford heifer, Gunyah Loyal E305 (H) by Charnock Detonator (H). Five stud heifers 9-11 months sold for $710 to Peter Telford Bendoc Park Poll Hereford Stud, south of Delegate who also purchased a single 15-month-old Hereford stud heifer at $800. Thirty-one from 31 Gunyah blood commercial heifers unjoined offered in pens aged from 9-15mths averaged $603 to gross $18,690. These heifers topped at $750 for a pen of six 14-15 month heifers to Glenn Allen Pambula, who also bought two other heifers at $700. Ten commercial heifers 12-13mths sold to FC Griebenow & Sons Orbost for $580 who also bought a poll bull for $2500. This was the first time females had been offered at the Gunyah sale for about 18 years. With this result they will be offered again next year and may also include some PTIC Hiefers. The 40 heifers grossed $25,440 to average $636.

The top priced Hereford bull was Gunyah Victorious (H), Heifers were auctioned before a helmsman sale of the which sold to W & A Wallace Nimmitabel for $3000. bulls conducted by Elders Cooma. The bull weighed 944kg at 27months and was sired by Sale total gross, $86,740. Kaludah Ted AI (H). He was shown at the Canberra Royal this year where he was awarded Reserve Senior Champion Hereford Bull. Poll Herefords Sixteen poll bulls sold from 17 offered and topped at $5700 to average $3356. The top priced bull was Gunyah Vista D175 (P), which sold to Ray Weston, Jindabyne for $5700. The bull was used on stud heifers earlier in the year and weighed 828kg at 22 months. It was sired by Allendale Vengeance (P) purchased for $37,500 at the Dubbo National Poll Sale in 2007 in partnership with Yavenvale Herefords Adelong. This year saw his first sons offered. His top four sons sold to average $5200. The second top Poll bull sold to D & M Wellsmore, Dalgety for $5400. Gunyah Vulture D207 (P), also By Vengeance weighed 746kg at 21 months. A total of 19 bulls from 24 averaged $3221, gross $61,200. Volume buyers, Nelson and Kath McIntosh Yackandandah Vic, purchased three bulls including the third top priced bull at $5200 for Gunyah Volcano D140 (P) another son of Allendale Vengeance (P). He weighed 848kg at 25 months, and a further two bulls, one at $4500, and one at $3500 to average $4400 to go into their 1000 strong cow herd. The majority of buyers came from local areas, Nimmitalbel, Bombala, Dalgety, Delegate and Cooma with Bulls and heifers also heading to Crookwell, the South Coast, Orbost, and Yackandandah.

With a week off to prepare for the crucial semi finals, the Cooma Ladies Tigers travelled to a waterlogged Kaleen to take on Gungahlin Utd. The terrible weather conditions weren’t enough to stop the determined Cooma side, who ran out 1-0 victors. Cooma were against the wind in the first half, giving Gungahlin most of the counter attacks; however United were off target. With Kailey Tonini in goals, filling in for an injured Claire D’Amico, anything that was close to target was covered. When it was thought that the score was going to be locked at 0-0 going into half time, a brilliant cross from Alicia Connell on the left wing found the boot of Beth McMahon who put her body on the line to slip one past the keeper making in 1-0. Cooma went into the second half knowing that Gungahlin were going to come out stronger in the remaining 40 minutes of the game. But it was Cooma that were creating chances from both sides and down the middle in the second half. The Lady Tigers had brilliant defence from Emma Gerrand, Grace Daley, Courtney Freeman, Georgia Peters, Lara McAuley and Deanne Baines; all equal contributors, playing their part so that Cooma wouldn’t concede in the second half. Mid fielders Tina Caferelli and Annie Crofts had great games, creating play and switching it to either side for reliable wingers Beth McMahon and Alicia Connell. Cooma prevailed, and were relieved to hear the full time whistle blown as they were granted their ticket into the grand final. Lady ‘Tiger’ of the day was awarded to Deanne Baines for her brilliant performance and determination. Her passes were accurate and tackles were outstanding! The Cooma Lady Tigers take on Woden Valley Griffins in the grand final at the University of Canberra next weekend at 12pm. We wish the girls all the best; you’re only 80 minutes away from being champions.

Finals to be won...

Great day for Cooma Tigers It was a great semi-final day for the Tigers on Sunday. First, Cooma Tigers PL 18 beat Canberra FC 4-0. After this the Premiers beat Canberra City 2-1 with 10 Players. Any pre-match nerves were softened after one of the best goals of the season by Jair Wilk in the 14th minute. A ball was put into the air across the goal, and Jair through a bicycle kick, struck the ball into the top right corner, beyond the full reach of the goalkeeper. Cooma were all together calmed by the goal and played from then on a well-controlled game. Canberra City showed at moments some anxiety while trying desperately to equalise the score. There were several risky occasions for Cooma, but the wall built up of the bricks Felipe, Soza and Phil blocked any ambitious attacks by Canberra City. The two closest occasions were saved by the skilful Tigers GK Bangweni. In the 27th minute of the first half, a centre from a half-turn by Gecic after dribbling the goalkeeper was received by Elliott. His barnstorming run into the box was be-crowned by a header placing the ball into the far post of the goal. Canberra City scored a goal on the 61st minute. Then, almost at the end of the game, in the 89th minute the ball shook the Tiger’s crossbar. The ball was struck from very close range. We would like to thank the Cooma Tigers’ fans (the girls especially), who with drums and chants animated the game. Also, thanks must go out to Mick Klima for his undying support of the first team and finally to the Ex-Services Club for its support of the club. Hopefully, as many Tigers’ fans can make the trip down to Canberra to support the boys as they play for a spot in the finals. Cooma fifths into Grand Final A true “captain’s” performance from Paul Lawson guided the Cooma Tigers SL5 team to a 2-0 victory against ANU on Saturday. In appalling conditions, the Tigers ran onto the Hawker Football Centre full of self-belief and confidence. Undoubtedly the form team in the fifth division competition, the boys knew that there were only 90 minutes of solid football standing between them and a Grand Final berth. Playing with a vicious wind at their backs in the first half, Cooma took some time to adjust to the conditions. The soaked artificial pitch meant that the ball skidded off the surface at pace, and the strike force of Ben Lollback and Andrew Bobinskas found it difficult to reach any through balls. Chances were created, however, and several corners troubled the ANU defence. Coach Walker made some slight tactical changes at half-time, and with the weather easing slightly the Tigers showed their dominance in the second stanza. The rock-solid defence of Ben Baker, Steven Murphy, Brendan Wall, Abdulkabir Lawal, and goalkeeper Mark Chenery was the foundation that the victory was built upon. Without their outstanding efforts, Cooma’s midfield would not have seen as much of the ball as they did. The defining moment of the match came with a free-kick on the edge of ANU’s box. Facing a determined wall, Captain Paul Lawson stepped up to take responsibility and curled the sweetest strike into the top corner; an outstanding effort that galvanised the team and crushed the spirit of ANU. Not usually known for his goal-scoring prowess, ‘Lawso’ was visibly delighted. The ‘Students’ found some heart and pushed Cooma until the end, but in the final few minutes Tim Jordan put an end to the contest. Some delightful build-up play between Cam Wall, Jason Warren-Smith, Andrew Bobinskas, and Ben Lollback created space for ‘Jordo’ to run into, and smash a long-range shot in off the underside of the crossbar. The huge Tigers’ support was ecstatic after the game; it’s not often you get treated to such quality goals in an important match. A soaked coach Walker was full of praise for his team after the match: “The boys really lifted and took the game to ANU. I’m so proud of their achievements so far, but we won’t be satisfied until we bring the cup back to Cooma.” Best of field: Paul Lawson, Lachlan King, and Ben Lollback

SuperCats do the Snowies proud in junior AFL finals appearance The Snowy SuperCats Under 14 AFL side has made history by becoming the first AFL side from the region to take part in a finals campaign since the early 1990s. While the SuperCats fell short of victory in the elimination final clash against the WildCats in Canberra on the weekend, they certainly won a lot of fans and respect. For the record, the final score was Supercats 42 defeated by the WildCats 92. Cooma Cats Club President Dave Paterson was full of praise for the young SuperCats for their efforts. “For most of the players, this is only their second year of playing AFL and to make the finals is a real credit to them,” Dave said. “It was a great effort all round against a bigger side. Everyone, including

parents, had a great day. “John Hukins and Jake McGaw were outstanding, but so too, was the courage and commitment of all the players. “I must also mention mention the smaller players, in particular Brian Hukins who made one of the best tackles I have seen all year against the Wildcats’ best player who was 20kg heavier and 20cm taller ,” Dave said. The Snowy SuperCats were formed in 2009 and draw their players from Jindabyne, Cooma, Numeralla and the surrounding areas. “The SuperCats players are a diverse, yet tight-knit group who have achieved great results under coach Marty Currie,” Dave said. “What they have done is opened up the road for young kids from the Monaro and Snowy

Mountains to play AFL, and it is a good road to be on,” he said. “We can anticipate that they will continue to improve in the years to come as they develop greater game knowledge and skills,” Dave said.

The Cooma Cats are looking to expand the number of junior SuperCat sides in 2011, with teams possibly playing in the Under 12, 14 and 16 age groups. “There is a growing interest in playing AFL

in the region and we at the Cooma Cats are keen to help make that opportunity available,” Dave said. “But we are not rushing into it because fielding a team in a Canberrabased competition

involves not only having the players, but also requires strong support and commitment from parents in the roles of coaches and managers, as well as sponsors. “If we can’t realistically field teams in other age

Fresh from contesting the last two rounds of the National Championship, Stefan Borsato returned to the NSW Formula Ford Championship recently at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway in the best possible fashion. The Synergy Motorsport team driver was able to show the benefits of running in the National Championship by clean sweeping the weekend in the NSW Championship that saw him top the time sheets in qualifying and then win three from three races in strong fashion. After dominating qualifying and the opening two races in the ‘Fiesta’ class, Borsato found the going a little tougher during the third and final race. Borsato was involved in a tight dice during the latter stages of the final race with Alan Price and it

saw the pair swap the lead change on the final lap before the former was able to take back the lead and take out a clean sweep of the round. Borsato admitted that competing in the past two National Championship rounds had certainly helped

The mighty High Country Cooma Red Devils under 10’s played their grand final match on Saturday against Jindabyne piglets in appalling conditions in Canberra. The rain bucketed down all the way up to Canberra then all of the game and most of the way home. The grounds were more like a swimming pool than playing fields but the boys were not to be deterred by the conditions and ran onto the field all fired up. After breaking through their banner they were ready and it was game on. Cooma were first to score in the corner after a great strong run from Dylan Van Gemert, who took the ball up the field and finally the ball was passed to Matt Swain who made it over the line. Unfortunately they missed the conversion but now the score was 5 nil. Jindabyne soon answered and sprinted away to score their first try of the match and also missed the conversion, now the

score was level at 5 all. Jindabyne again scored and then converted bringing the score to 12-5 in Jindabyne’s favour but Cooma weren’t giving up and the scored remained at 12-5 Jindabyne’s way. Congratulations Jindabyne on your win! The Cooma team has come a long way this season with most of the players not having played before and also being quite a young team with players aged from eight to 10 years old. They started the season slowly but to have reached a grand final in their first year is just amazing. Of course all of this couldn’t have been achieved without their coach Campbell Young, thanks for your dedication, determination and patience with these young boys, our future of rugby in Cooma. Tayla tops in ACT competition Enthusiastic rugby league player, 14-year-old Monaro High School student Tayla Stanford is now playing in an under 16s women’s division in Canberra on Sundays. Earlier this year, Tayla was contacted by Canberra rugby league, as they were trying to get a women’s competition started. As Tayla is so passionate about playing league she was very interested and is now playing in Canberra for the Tuggeranong Buffaloes. They play in and around Canberra every Sunday and the team trains twice a week, with Tayla making the training session once a week. She first started playing rugby league in the under 8’s division six years ago. She then progressed to playing rugby union as well, but girls can only play mixed with the boys until they are 12 years

old. In the mean time Tayla took up soccer, which she plays on Saturdays and trains once a week for, she also enjoys playing squash once a week. Tayla’s love of league extended to her appearing on the footy show a couple of years ago where she won ‘a league of their own’ competition for the year taking home $50,000. The team just missed a grand final berth and are now vying for third place. This is the first year of this competition in Canberra and the girls would love to see it grow. Tayla thinks a Cooma team would be great for next year. Tayla would love to go further with her rugby league but isn’t sure what avenues are open for females at this stage. Tayla has excelled with her game this year and is the top point scorer in the girls’ competition.

Local riders represent at PCA State Dressage Championships Two local riders Kristen Whiting of Cooma and Teresa Sutton of Adaminaby represented Zone 18 Pony Club at the annual State Dressage Championships last weekend at the Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre. Both girls were competing in the 15 – under 17 age group which consisted of 48 riders. Riders competing at these championships consisted of not only NSW riders but included riders from Victoria and Queensland. This was the first experience of riding at the Championships for Teresa who thoroughly enjoyed the experience, Kristen has attended the competition since 2006 – winning champion in 2008 in the 13 – under 15 age group. Conditions at the equestrian centre were

extremely wet and muddy. The exercising of the horses presented problems for the riders however the actual competition areas were mostly all-weather surfaces. Both girls competed very well and finished in the top half of their group, however neither rider was fortunate enough to finish in the top 10 place getters. With the experiences from this competition the girls hope to improve their rankings in the next championships to be held in January. Riders from Zone 18 will now prepare for the State Showriding Championships which will be held in Dubbo on December 4 and 5 and then riders will again compete at the State Dressage Championships which are to be held on January 26 and 27 at Clarendon in Sydney. Snowy Mountains Christian School -State athletics carnival

Nick Wassink in action with the discus. Last week saw six of the Snowy Mountains Christian School’s top athletics compete at the CSSA state athletics carnival in Sydney, with some amazing results. Sasha Allen the youngest member of our team placed 15th in the eight-year girls 100 metres and 12th in the 200 metre event. Her older sister Georgie Allen placed 15th in the 10-year girls 400 metre and 10th in the junior girls 800 metres. Another set of siblings Kurt and Nick Wassink also competed at the carnival in discus. Kurt placed 10th in the junior boys and Nick placed an incredible fourth in the 11-year boys. Nick also stepped up to compete in the 11-year boys long jump, placing 14th. Nick also threw the regional record the week before in discus. To round off our primary team Mikaylah Bateman burnt up the track placing first in the 12 years girls 100 metre and 200 metres. She also placed 11th in the 400 metre and fourth in long jump. These amazing results were good enough to earn her equal 12-year-

old girl champion. Mikaylah will now move on to compete in the 100 and 200 metre events at the CIS State Carnival in September. The week before Mikaylah competed in Wollongong, where she was age champion of that carnival. SERAS basketball prepares for carnival The South East Regional Academy of Sport (SERAS) held its third Basketball Program training camp for 2010 in Moruya recently to prepare for the Tuggeranong Vikings Junior Carnival being held in October. The training camp is an extension of the program designed to give the coaching staff more time with the athletes. Former Canberra Cannons player and SERAS head coach Ian Ellis worked with the squad over two days and he was assisted by Donna Berry. The squad consists of a team of 10 boys and 10 girls and the Tuggeranong carnival will be their second change to play together as a team.

SamWilliams named in Toyota Cup team of the year Canberra Raiders rising stars Sam Williams and Sam Mataora were rewarded for an outstanding season last week as they were named in the Toyota Cup team of the year for 2010. Williams is the Captain of the Toyota Cup side and has led the team this season with an outstanding on field season and although he’s injured at the moment he’s looking forward to getting back on the field for the finals. Sam Mataora has played a handful of games for the Raiders NRL team this year after showing plenty of promise for the Toyota Cup team and he’s already touted as a future star at NRL level. Williams was named in the side at halfback, while Mataora was named in the second row. Both Williams and Mataora are focused on their work off the field as well with Mataora a role model for his home region of the pacific islands, while Williams works fulltime with the Raiders in junior development. Williams said it was an honour to make the team of the year and said he hoped he could be back on the

season for the finals. “It’s great to be named in this team and I have to thank my teammates for helping me along this year and I credit them for me making this team,” Williams said. “Hopefully I’ll be back in time for the finals and my ankle is right to go for the business end of the season.” The NRL today unveiled the 2010 Toyota Cup Team of the Year as some of the game’s biggest names rallied behind the competition to declare it the best elite development program in Australian sport. Brett Kimmorley, Braith Anasta, Ben Hannant, Tim Sheens, Brian Smith, Steve Noyce and Michael Searle are among those who support a Toyota Cup competition that has revolutionised the development of Rugby League’s rising stars and provided some of the most exciting new faces in the NRL. Already, five members of the 2010 Team of the Year have played in the NRL, adding to an impressive strikerate that has seen 27 of the previous 34 Team of the Year members compete in the top grade.

Taylor stands out in ‘boys’ sport In the male dominated sport of motocross, local Cooma girl, 18-yearold Taylor Peet stands out from the rest. Currently ranked fifth in NSW Taylor has achieved some outstanding results throughout her riding career. After finishing school in 2009 Taylor is now working at Birdsnest when she’s not competing. Taylor has been around bikes all her life and racing since she was a seven year old. Her family was all

involved in dirt bike racing so it was a natural progression for Taylor to make. Between September 13 – 16, 2010 Taylor will take part in a female rider training camp at the AIS in Canberra. The camp caters for up to 15 girls and is run over the full four days and is targeted at riders achieving outstanding results at State or National levels in any discipline of motorcycle sport. This camp will incorporate fitness testing, physical training sessions and AIS lectures on general sports science, for example nutrition, sports psychology, physiology, strength and conditioning to name a few of the subjects to be covered. Taylor had to apply by a detailed application form explaining how she has gone this year, achievements and where she wants to go with the sport. Taylor said, “she would one day like to best one of the best in

Australia, or even NSW but to have the opportunity to race in America would be awesome. I don’t know if I’d get that far though because I race as a privateer, I’d love to be on a team, a girls team. I do have a local sponsor MGM Industries but I’m always on the look out for more!” Taylor puts her selection into the camp down to how committed she is to the sport and how determined she is, as well as her recent results. Taylor has also featured on the cover of Dirt Action magazine as well as having a two page spread, where she had to nominate her favourite bike from the ones she test rode. “Not many people expect girl riders to be any good and they get a surprise when I beat them.” She said. Taylor is currently racing a KTM250F and said she loves it, it’s the best bike she’s had so far, it’s got so much power. Despite the weather continuing to play havoc with our golf, some excellent scores have been recorded. On Wednesday, August 25, Dulcie Thistleton played a great round to win with 39 points in the 18-hole Stableford. The runner-up was Ann Clayton with 36 points on a count back. Balls were won by Lyn Last, also on 36 points, Gaye Wilson, 31 points, and Dorothy Bilbow, 26 points. On Saturday, August 28, Lorraine McGregor won the nine-hole Stableford with 17 points. Balls were won by Ayako Izutani, 16 points, and Clare Nowland, 17 points.

In the 18-hole Stableford played on Wednesday, September 1, Ayako Izutani made her last game in Cooma one to remember. She played some excellent golf and won with 39 points. The seventh anniversary of the Centenary Cup was played at Cooma on Saturday when 60 golfers competed for the Cup on a day which proved to be fine for golf after a few showers overnight. Young Matthew Hanna shot a dream round on the day to win the Men’s Centenary Cup with a great round of 63 net off his 14 handicap, four strokes ahead of Phil Patricks. Dulcie Thistleton ran out the Ladies Cup winner with 74 net on a count back from Marcelle Burton and Marion Burke after all three players finished on 74. Storta and Lodge do well at State finals Cooma bowlers Mel Storta and Waynne Lodge performed well at the State finals of the President Reserve pairs championship held at Avoca Beach over the weekend. They won their first match and were unlucky to loss their quarter final match by a single shot. Storta and Lodge made the long trek to the Central Coast with a band of supporters and did not disappoint with a very strong performance in their first game. On Saturday morning they played the Kevin Burley and Phillip Wilson from Gloucester – the zone six champions. The Cooma bowlers quickly adapted to the conditions and dominated the match. They led throughout and recorded a convincing 20 – 6 win. The quarter final was played on Saturday afternoon with Storta and Lodge drawn against the zone one champions – John Luchetti and John Brown from Yamba. This was a very tight struggle. The two sides were very evenly matched with the score close throughout. The Yamba players went into the last end with a 17 – 14 advantage. While Storta and Lodge had the better of the last end they could only manage to pick up two shots leaving them agonisingly close to forcing an extra end. The 17 – 16 final score line reflected the closeness of the battle. Once again the Cooma players acquitted themselves very well and demonstrated that our local bowlers can hold their own in competition with the best players from around the State – well done. Social bowls was the order of the day locally and

unfortunately the less than pleasant weather acted to limit the number of players who ventured out. On Saturday there were only two matches played with the winners recording comfortable victories. Mario Frezza, Jack Sajina and Jim Fletcher were two consistent for Ron Wainwright, Sergio Roncelli and John Schoon. Olga Jebbink and Ray Downey combined well to outplay Margherita Zasso and Ron Gammon. The three matches played on Sunday produced very close matches. In fact, over the three games there was a total of only three shots difference between the winners and losers. Jim Fletcher and Ignazio Mondello had a 20 all draw with Jack Sajina and Neil McGregor. Lorraine West, Leonie Snell and Ron Gammon held on to beat Rulie Steinfort, Don Jarvis and Giulio D’Amico 16 – 15. In the widest margin Ron Wainwright, Margherita Zasso and Denis Steinfort defeated Sergio Roncelli, Daphne Buckley and Ray Downey 20 – 18! Social bowls will again be the centre of action this weekend. Names need to be in by 12 noon for a 1pm start. Nominations for the 2011 fours and triples championship are now being called. Players intending to play need to organise their sides and complete their nominations. The nominations form. Cooma Stallions Presidents report 2010

This is certainly the time of year that all footballers strive to be part of, the finals, which are played as spring heats up as well as the quality of the game. The Cooma Club are overjoyed to have the exciting under 18’s in their first ever grand final appearance for a very long time. They have gelled together extremely well under the guidance of first grade player Steve Dunn and the club is very confident that this Sunday will see them crowned as premiers for 2010. Both the first and reserve grade teams competed in the preliminary finals last weekend after being at the top of their respective competitions right throughout the season. The club has had an outstanding group of young men represent them and can certainly look forward to continued success throughout the forthcoming years. No club can function without strong sponsorship support and inner club team managers, strappers and crews and a big thankyou therefore goes to all those who put their hand up. May the football gods be with you over the next four weeks as all followers of this great game take pride in their respective sides hoping to win the big one. Under 18’s pre match As the under 18’s are the only Cooma side to make the grand final nal in league this year, a few words from coach Steve Dunne were in order. The boys play at 10.30am in Bega this Sunday in front of a Bega a home crowd. We hope people will make the trip down and show w support to our younger players as they are the ones who will be moving up the ranks and playing in the top teams in the future. Bega has been one of the better sides we have played this yearr but we have beaten them, quite convincingly not long ago. The boys are e going into the game confident of a win for the grand final. Players to watch are captain Zac Smith, Mitch Lynch, Ryan Stores res and Josh Tredigo who is hitting form at the right end of the season. We received a few injuries last Sunday but nothing that will keep p those players out of the game this week. Training on Tuesday will be a team run and on Thursday a few players from the other grades as well as retired players will come down and give some e advice, then it’s off for a BBQ and relax before the big day.

Under 18s glory bound

First grade

The Cooma firsts are very unfortunate not to be playing in the group 16 grand final next week when they went down to Eden 20-18 in the preliminary final in Bega on Sunday. Eden rushed away to an early 10 nil lead and had Cooma back-peddling when they pushed the ball to the fringes of the ruck. Cooma hit back with two good tries once they had a bit of ball to level up the scoreboard just before halftime. Cooma started the second half very well and had Eden stretched. The Cooma forwards were paving the way with Steve Dunn a handful most times he had the ball. Early tries in the second half put Cooma in the lead and they held on to an 18-10 lead for a while. Eden scored to bring the game closer 18-14 but the Cooma boys worked hard and were very unlucky not to post a good break. Eden pushed hard into Cooma’s territory and on the last tackle pushed the ball wide to score and convert to take the lead 20-18. With only minutes remaining the ball was pushed wide by Dunn to Moon who passed back inside to Clarke and as he raced away to score the match winning points there was another very poor decision by the touch judge ruling a forward pass, Cooma’s dream was shattered. The siren sounded and Eden took the game 20-18. Captain coach Donald was devastated as was his whole team. He led admirably and had big support from all his forwards with Steve Dunn terrific, Big Clay Clear hit the gaps with gusto and was rewarded with a good try. The backs had limited chances but when called on pushed Eden to the line. Cooma were certainly the better side for the majority of the game and can count themselves very unlucky and unfortunate not to be grand finalists.

Reserves The Cooma seconds probably played one of their poorer games when they were completely out numbered by a bigger, more passionate, Cobargo side losing 28-4. With a number of injuries arising during the game to important positions, the team never really got functional and consequently lacked direction. Cooma were still in the game late in the second half with Cobargo leading 12-4 but just could not get the right combination going to post a try. Cameron Jones tried very hard to lift the team and he had good support in the forwards from Venables, Lewis, Detrich and Elton. The Cooma backs failed to fire and too often fullback Jamie Harry was left to bring the ball back without support, captain coach Rod Palmer tried hard as did half Boller while centre Rolfe never gave up.

Under 18’s The Cooma young guns are into their first ever grand final next week when they stuck to their game plan to run out good winners over Merimbula-Pambula 18-14. Cooma were again slow starters and let the coastal sideslip away to lead 10 nil before gaining enough ball and field position to catch up to 10 all. Cooma lost captain Zac Smith to the sinbin for 10 grueling minutes and they all had to work extra hard to hold Merimbula-Pambula out. Cooma hit the lead with a great length of the field try to winger John Sutcliffe and this lifted the boys. Coach Steve Dunn insisted they stick to the instructions in his halftime talk and the boys did just that. The Cooma team was playing with a lot more confidence and posted several tries to race away with the game in the second half to book a spot in the grand final. Cooma were best served by half Tredigo and centre Learoyd in the backs while Jackson, Schofield, Stores and Turner ran hard and tackled all day. Cooma now play Bega in the grand final next week and the whole town is right with you boys as you strive to win your first big premiership.
