Proposed Snowsport Training Facility in Jindabyne
A current proposal of merging SnowSports ACT, NSW Snowsports and Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA) may lead to a high-performance training centre based in Jindabyne.

Conversations are currently underway between the three organisations to form a unitary model for the control and management of winter sports. The vision, should the merger go ahead, is to establish a National training facility at the Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre bringing more elite and sub-elite snow sport athletes to the region. With many elite training programs for snow sports currently taking place in Victoria, there is a strong desire among the NSW and ACT organisations to provide a world-class facility closer to home for all snowsports athletes that caters for multiple training pathways – from participatory to elite levels. A 75 per cent endorsement from members is required for the merger to go ahead. The idea to merge is not a new one, with an Australian Sports Commission review recommending a merger in 2006. At the time, the three organisations did not agree and the proposal never eventuated. A decade on, snow sports in Australia have grown exponentially and the idea is getting more support. Chairperson of NSW Interschools Snowsport, Steve Cooper says the unitary model is a game changer for the Snowy Mountains community. “Snow sports are getting bigger and stronger in Australia. In fact, it is becoming too big to stay in the current format of operation. We are getting about 12,500 entries for the Interschools each year,� he says. “The merger is about succession planning. A new united system will allow for less politics, fragmentation and regulation and more action, collaboration and inspiration. It will enable us to think nationally but act regionally. Regionalising sport is something we have been urging the NSW government to do for some time now.� According to Mr Cooper, there is current support for the merger from the Australian Sport Commission and the state governments. The Member for Monaro, John Barilaro responded with the following comments: “The Snowy Mountains is Australia’s premier alpine region and popular winter tourism destination. The concept of a world class training facility for snow sport athletes situated in Jindabyne is exciting and certainly has potential.� “I am looking forward to being properly briefed on
the project, in order to investigate what support may be available from the NSW Government as the concept progresses.� Mr Barilaro said. ASC Chair John Wylie says “This reform process is about leaders acting for the common good of their sport at all levels. Building trust and national cohesion, improving commercial and financial positions, and improving competitive performances, are the key objectives�. SSA President Dean Gosper added, “Snowsports in Australia is now a Tier 1 level sport, alongside swimming and sailing. Our collective National and State collaborative efforts over the past 3 years has seen identified Snow Racer participants rise in numbers to just under 20,000 in total. SSA’s new managerial and operational role with Para-Winter programs, which sits alongside the SSA & OWIA High Performance Snowsports programs, together with our expanding participation and sports development platform, requires all within the Australian Snowsports community to work together to support snowsports participants, athletes, and to develop champions.� If it does go ahead, the aim is to create a strong physical presence in Jindabyne with elite, subelite and developing participation programs made available to all snowsports enthusiasts. This would potentially open the door for better training facilities, not only for snow sports, but possibly for other sports such as Mountain Biking and BMX – the list could be significant,� Steve Cooper says. “Already we have seen local schools such as Jindabyne Central School adopt the SSA’s ‘Little Shredders’ sporting program. This program receives significant support from the Australian Resorts, with those who complete the program being eligible for two days of lessons, equipment hire and lift passes, all for free, through the ‘Golden Ticket’ program. It combines the development of new skills, with fun and plenty of activity, and is delivered through existing sports staff in schools and visiting coaches and elite snowsports athletes.� Steve added. Ronan Preston, a Year 10 student at JCS (formerly of Picton HS) said “I definitely want to take my snowsports career further. It would be helpful for my training as gym membership is so expensive. I often have to travel to Sydney and overseas for training
and competition.� Another JCS Year 10 student Kyah Carson (whose family moved here from Newcastle five years ago) added “It would be amazing, and having this facility year-round in Jindabyne would encourage other sports-minded families to move here too.� Both students participate in the Perisher Winter Sports Club, attending five days a week to further their snowsports training and careers. From the ski resort’s perspective, Peter Brulisauer, Chief Operating Officer at Perisher responded “I don’t think there will be any significant impacts on Perisher and recreational skiing. The State’s Snowsports Associations have done a great job over time, but I think there is benefit from the unification for the competitive Snowsports pathway in removing some of the bureaucracy. For the future, I can see real benefit to the competitive side of the sport from the unification that the SSA is proposing.� Bruce Easton, President of Jindabyne Chamber of Commerce, is also enthusiastic about the prospects for local businesses, especially the benefits to tourism, if this proposal is successful. “Jindabyne is the hub and home of snowsports in Australia, (most) many of those who are on their pathway from recreational skiers to the Olympics are based here. There are also many (ancillary) skilled health and wellbeing professionals who are here to mentor and support the next generation of elite athletes. The proposal to create a National Training Centre here in Jindabyne will focus and consolidate the local community support and optimism. It is a very holistic opportunity, and makes sense.� Chair of NSW Snowsports Daniel Bosco stated in a notice of public forum earlier this month that the unitary model would lead to increased funding, better access to facilities for athletes and greater clarity regarding channels of communication. “Overall, the NSW Snowsports Board see this as an exciting development which will increase our bargaining power with state and federal governments, whilst also improving governance and operational efficiencies,� states Mr Bosco. The next public forum for discussion and update on the progress of the proposal will be held on Saturday 1st July at 5pm in the JCS gymnasium. Subsequent public forums are planned for Canberra and Sydney in coming months.

#slowsnow #checkyourspeed #dontrush Skiing is an exhilarating sport performed in a magnificent pristine environment, and the experience of hurtling down a snow-covered mountain is what a lot of thrill-seekers are looking for on their ski holiday. There are now apps that record your every run, speed, climb, heart rate and report back live to your friends. That is the up side… what could possibly go wrong? Unfortunately, some skiers leave the mountain in an unplanned manner… with the assistance of a team of Ski Patrollers and Medical staff, and
with the unintended consequences of injury and medical bills. An experienced Ski Patroller remarked that often the worst days are those of “bluebird skies and perfectly groomed runs, because people forget about their safety in their quest for speed”. The message is simple #checkyourspeed and
#dontrush in the designated #slowsnow zones… and enjoy your skiing. All Australian Ski resorts have adopted the Alpine Responsibility Code to keep the skiing visitors safe. It is everyone’s responsibility to read, understand and abide by this Code.
OBSERVE THE CODE
ALPINE RESPONSIBILITY CODE There are inherent risks in all snow recreational activities. Common sense, staying in control and personal awareness can reduce these risks. Risks include rapid changes in weather, visibility and surface conditions, as well as natural and artificial hazards such as rocks, trees, stumps, vehicles, lift towers, snow fences and snowmaking equipment. Observe the code and ski and ride with courtesy to others. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
Stay in control and avoid other people and hazards. Use appropriate protective equipment, especially helmets, to minimise the risk of injury. You must have the ability to use each lift safely. If in doubt ask the lift attendant. Obey all signs and warnings, and keep off closed trails and areas. It is your responsibility to avoid and give way to people below and beside you. Do not stop where you are not visible from above or where you obstruct a trail. Before starting downhill, or merging into a trail, look uphill and give way to others. Use care to prevent runaway snowboards. If you are involved in or see an accident, alert and identify yourself to Resort Staff. Be aware that it is dangerous to ski, board or ride lifts if your ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol.
Regardless of how you enjoy your snow sport, there are inherent risks in all snow recreational activities. Travelling to the snow this season? Monaro Local Area Command Police encourage the use of a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). PLB’s are pocket sized emergency distress beacons that transmit via a global satellite network. Activated PLB’s with GPS position capability were found by Jindabyne Police to be accurate to within ten metres on the ground at the time of rescue. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) offer PLBs on a free loan in Kosciuszko National Park when you register your walk with NPWS. For more information please contact NPWS Snowy Region Visitor Centre on (02) 6450 5600. If you have your own PLB ensure that your beacon is correctly registered with AMSA. Police offer the following advice for year round safety in the snowy mountains;
• Check the weather forecast and accept the advice and warnings issued by the Bureau of Meteorology and National Parks & Wildlife Service. • Leave a detailed trip itinerary with somebody who knows you and can notify Police if your return is overdue. • Don’t rely on mobile telephones for emergency communications – cold affects battery life and service can be patchy or non-existent in wilderness areas. • Take a PLB as a reliable means of alerting authorities to an emergency situation where urgent assistance is required. • Ensure your beacon is properly registered with AMSA to give you the best chance of being rescued in an emergency. • Ensure you have the appropriate fitness, experience and equipment for your planned activity.

30th Anniversary Celebration Year 2017 is the 30th Anniversary Celebration Year of the NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships. NSW Interschools will focus on recognising the very significant contributions that our volunteers make to the overall success of the events, particular at School Coordinator and Course Official level. There will be a number of announcements on initiatives and incentives for 2017. Division 6 Ski Cross has arrived! Following the extraordinary success of the Division 6 Alpine events in 2016, Division 6 Ski Cross will now be introduced in 2017. The Division 6 Alpine and Ski Cross events will also be held at 2017 Australian Interschools hosted at Mt Buller on the 6th to 10th of September. The Division 6 Alpine and Ski Cross events will hold School Championship points at the Regional, NSW State and Australian Championships. Slopestyle events to be extended to Division 3 The 2017 Interschools Slopestyle Ski and Snowboard events will be held for Division 1-3 on Thursday August 24 at Perisher. The Slopestyle events will not hold any School Championship points in 2017. The top 10 individuals assuming a minimum skill level will qualify for the 2017 Australian Interschools at Mt Buller. As with the 2016 Australian Interschools Championships, only individuals qualify. No team medals or Championship points will be awarded in the Australian Interschools Slopestyle events. Multiclass Championships NSW Interschools, in conjunction with Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA), will be holding the Interschools Multiclass Championships on August 26 at Perisher, an alpine and snowboard event for students with a disability in NSW, ACT and QLD. Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in a two
Interschools
day DWA training camp at Perisher leading up to the event on August 24 & 25. The camp is free of charge (with DWA membership) and involves 2 x 2 hour coaching sessions each day with DWAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s volunteer adaptive snowsport guides. It is a basic introduction to racing to help students understand the racing process and to become more comfortable in a race course. Students compete for their school in their Interschools division. Medals will be awarded to the top 3 place getters in each division. Entries will open in early August through the Interschools Online Entry System and participants will need to RSVP for the training camp. The NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships has experienced significant growth of 15% over the last 2 years. As a result of this growth, NSW Interschools has engaged in ongoing and extensive negotiations with the Resorts, the NSWXC Committee, and other Event holders during the past 6 weeks, to develop a schedule that allows for real and achievable growth with NSW Interschools competitions into the future, without diminishing any other event. NSW Interschools would like to thank the Resorts, the NSWXC Committee, the Queensland School Coordinators, and The Scots, Redlands, and Pymble event holders, for accommodating our requests and working with us to ensure that the integrity of all events is continued during this growth period. The Northern NSW and Queensland Championships, and the Sydney Championships, will now move into
a 5-day event format, commencing on the Tuesday and finishing on the Saturday. The NSW State Championships will now commence with a full competition day on the Tuesday, continuing through to Sunday. This expansion will allow our events to spread across the week and reduce the number of clashes for each division. Change of Schedule for a couple of events The NSW/ACT State Cross-Country Event will now be held on Thursday 24th of August, with all NSW/ACT/ QLD Ski and Snowboard Slopestyle events being held the same day. Scheduling these two events on the same day will minimize event clashes, and opens the opportunity for more secondary and primary competitors to participate in our cross country events, without taking more time out of school. Due to the recent expansion of the NSW State Interschools Championships Schedule, the Amelia McGuiness Time Trial will now be held on Monday 21st of August 2017. The AMASDF Committee has recently reviewed the Amelia McGuiness Time Trial event, and has moved to streamline this event with the NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships. In 2017, online registrations for the Amelia McGuiness Time Trial will be available via the Interschools Online Entry System as a separate event. Schools Coordinators will be required to enter participants for this event, and will be responsible for looking after the schools tax invoice and any volunteer requirements. The Amelia McGuiness Cross Country Event will be held on Sunday 20th of August 2017. This event will be organised by the NSWXC committee, and information will be available for this event in 2017. All monies raised from both events will be distributed to our emerging snowsports athletes, via the Amelia McGuiness Scholarship program.

on and off the slopes at the G.H. Mumm Top to Bottom Weekend The Thredbo G.H. Mumm Race Weekend returns to Thredbo August 11-12 and it promises to be the party of the season with fast paced action both and off the slopes. In the village there is a massive roll call of DJ’s, set to play in mini festival atmosphere at the base of the mountain. Headlining is Sydney’s Jesse Porsches, who after teaming up with some of Australia’s top artists is breaking out solo, so expect a sneak peek of his debut single. Also playing across the weekend is electronica dance DJ Elizabeth Rose, Moza, Commandeur and KLP.

SNOWY HOTELS HAVE THE LOWEST NUMBER OF ASSAULTS
IN 20 YEARS
Assaults on or near licensed premises in the Snowy Mountains are at their lowest levels since the mid-1990s, AHA NSW Director of Liquor and Policing John Green said during a recent visit to the region. Mr Green is in the Snowy Mountains for the annual start of ski season meeting between NSW Police, Liquor & Gaming NSW and licensees - as well as an AHA NSW SubBranch meeting. He said the latest Bureau of Crime Statistic and Research (BOCSAR) figures show assaults on or near hotels and clubs in the Snowy Mountains Sub-Branch area (which includes Jindabyne and Cooma) had reduced by 75% since 2008. “Local licensees, police and patrons should all be congratulated on working together to achieve a great result; the lowest number of assaults on licensed premises in the area since the mid 1990’s,” Mr Green said. “Too often we hear people being negative about behaviour in and around licensed premises - a 75% reduction in assaults on
licensed premises is a stunning achievement which should be acknowledged. “The 75% reduction looks even more impressive when compared to a 45% reduction across NSW over the same period.” Mr Green said today’s annual briefing by police and Liquor and Gaming NSW in Jindabyne is a pro-active measure which provides clear guidance on their compliance expectations. “Continued dialogue during the season is a key method of ensuring the responsible service of alcohol,” he said. “Between June and October each year, tens of thousands of people flock to the snowfields to ski during the day and socialise during the evening, our message for them is a simple one - we want patrons to have fun but they need to know their limits and behave. “Bad behaviour and intoxication will not be tolerated so if staff or security say you’ve had enough and it’s time to go, obey their instructions. If you don’t, you face a $550.00 fine.”

Baby, it’s cold outside! And what better way to defrost than in front of a cosy wood fire at a good ol’ country pub? It’s just like home, but someone’s already stoked the fire, cooked the meal, poured the drinks and provided the entertainment. The Snowy Monaro is chocko-block full of classic pubs boasting great hospitality, comfort food and friendly locals who know how to spin a yarn. Sam and Eliza are The Snowpost’s newest recruits who have recently returned to their roots. Both claiming to be pub-enthusiasts, we agreed to let them go on a road trip around the Snowy Monaro in search of the best pubs for eating, drinking, dancing and hiding away from the chilly winter air. If you’re driving from Canberra and feel like a little pick-me-up, make the Bredbo Inn your next pitstop. You won’t miss it; the first place on your left driving into town. Not only are their homemade pies delicious (we sampled the lamb and rosemary) but their $10 espresso martinis could turn your pit-stop into a longer break than anticipated…it’s safe to say Eliza and I hit the jackpot when we found these bad boys on offer. The Inn was established in 1836 and the original sandstone work and stables still stand. Although recently renovated, this historic hotel makes you feel as if you’re having a brew with Banjo Paterson. After all, we did hear he was a regular back in the day. -S
Should we go to The Aussie? It’s a simple question that is thrown around by all the locals in town. Smack-bang in the middle of the main street and family owned and operated by the Kelly’s for over forty years, you will meet friendly staff in a super laid-back atmosphere. They’re known for their hot roast lunches every day…. or their DJ and disco nights every Friday and Saturday. This party-ready venue gets into full swing once everyone else has locked their doors. The dancefloor is dim and deeply inviting, you won’t want to leave at a such a civilised hour. Hey Eliza, should we go to The Aussie? -S
The Cooma is one of the oldest pubs in town. It was fully renovated in 2013, but kept all original stonework and chimneys to combine historic beauty with all the mod-cons. Upon arrival, Sam and I went straight to the fire and sunk into the two biggest and comfiest arm chairs. New manager, Ash, set us up with a coffee and lemon meringue pie – bliss. On a Monday night, you can warm up with a ‘Beer and Braise’ special, or warm up on the dance floor with live music every other weekend. If this doesn’t tickle your fancy, try their signature braised lamb shank with creamy potato puree. Oh my. -E

The Royal has that real old-style charm that you just can’t fake. We were immediately drawn to the gorgeous verandah that wraps around the entire frontage of the pub. Built in 1858, it’s the oldest hotel in the Snowy Mountains and still uses the original timber fridges with vintage latches. But it’s not just the history that appeals to us; the Royal offers parmas in two sizes, ‘gremlin’ or ‘monster’. No prizes for guessing which one we went for. -E
Off the main drag and opposite the old Cooma railway line, this traditional corner pub has good all year-round feels. Equipped with a main bar, cosy lounges around the fire and an impressive beer garden, I’ve already suggested we make Coffey’s our new local. Publican, Isabelle Browne, made the move with her family from Sydney to Cooma four years ago and hasn’t looked back. The local tradies love it and frequent here for their early knock-off drinks. But if that’s not a sure indication, with the new kitchen and notable wine list showcasing local winemaker ‘Shut the Gate,’ this pub just keeps on winning. -S
4. THE ALPINE HOTEL I’m not alone in saying that the Alpine is my main watering hole in Cooma. Whether you’re in the mood to eat locally made bangers or dance to some locally played bangers, it’s got it all. Choose from the 10 beers on tap or mix it up with one of their feature beers. My favourite spot is the bench seat by the window or snuggled up next to the art deco fireplace. Sam was taken by the $40 wine and platter special on Friday’s, but I was just keen for a steak. There is one big problem though…. chips, mash or potato bake? One regular recommends potato bake, “to stop the seagulls’. I’m looking at you, Sam…. -E

13 Everyone’s got a story from the Federal. Since the 1890s, this legendary pub has survived five fires and hosted a long list of celebrities, including Banjo Paterson and Miles Franklin, who both have rooms named after them. According to publican, Kelvin Fahey, this place used to be Peter Garratt’s watering hole on his way down to the coast for a surf. Every room is $60 all year round – from the doubles to the family rooms. With 35 beers available for $5 each (even half a litre of Guinness), you can’t go past the big yellow pub in Nimmity. -E

Call me biased, (I am a Bombala girl after all), but there’s nothing quite like trotting down to The Globe on a Friday night to sink a few shandies, get into a round of pool and catch up on old times. You will meet locals who literally ride their horses to the pub and Eliza jumped at the chance to see this opportunity. She twisted my arm, so I saddled up and within a few minutes I was inside the Globe ordering us a round with the nag tied up out back. For me, the Globe is simply like staying at home… if my home had a wellstocked bar that isn’t just beer and half a bottle of whiskey. -S
8. THE GLOBE HOTEL, BOMBALA If you’re looking for the quintessential country pub, then look no further. It’s where the locals go for a quiet one…or a big one. Publican, Graeme ‘Payto’ Payten, has seen his fair share of wild parties in his 36 years at the Delegate Hotel. The pub is renowned for playing host to some of the region’s wildest nights with great live music and dancing that puts Jagger to shame. The walls are donned with photos of locals dancing on the bar with their arms around each other and drinks in the air. When Sam and I asked if we could sit on the bar for a photo, the response was a laugh, “it’s seen far worse than that!” -E
The old corner pub with the blue verandah and everything you need: Reschs on tap (good in a shandy according to Sam), big hearty meals, great hospitality and a jukebox. The old-school jukebox works like new and there’s an abundance of pub anthems to choose from. Licensee, Cameron McKid, took us on a tour of the brew house, which supplies the bar with Kosciuszko Pale Ale and seasonal beers straight from the vat to the tap - it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get much fresher than that! There are plenty of meal options if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re feeling hungry and a cocktail bar if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re feeling fancy. Are the beers really better at the Banjo? BERRIDALE INN HOTEL We rolled into Berridale with the ultimate road-trip song (Princeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Little Red Corvette) blasting through the stereo, thinking we were just about ready for some lunch. Now Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not sure whether the Berridale Inn was calling us, or we were calling the Berridale Inn, either way, we found the right place. All the meals are $10 and they are â&#x20AC;&#x153;bloody goodâ&#x20AC;?. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the classics; burgers, steaks, parmas, and salt and pepper squid which exceeded our expectations. A combination of good food and a few drinks at the right time of the day made it pretty hard for us to leave the sunny beer garden out back. -S
13. LAKE JINDABYNE HOTEL I remember my first time at the LJH 10 years ago, although it has changed quite considerably since then. Country Pub Crawl WRAPPING UP... From Page 14 After spending the past few years living the city lifestyle, it was a breath of fresh air for us to jump in the car and take the scenic route. It made us realise just how beautiful the Snowy Monaro is and how lucky we are to have it as our backyard. As for the pubs, we didn’t expect to find such variety in such a small area. Serving a whopping 1,300 people in their first two weeks, the food at Burger Biz is speaking for itself. Owner and operator Nic Mclean has brought together his background as a chef, his love of burgers and his love of marketing for the concept. The Ninth Peak Festival delighted audiences with a broad line-up of 35 artists from many genres, in a total of over 100 performances across 10 venues. David De Santi, Program Director, was thrilled with this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Peak Festival. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What an amazing few days in Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only music festival in the snow! We had an eclectic collection of artists playing a wide range of music from reggae to hip hop to folk to Balkan Gypsy to Bluegrass! The Perisher resort was humming with music and people creating a truly y unique experience for all,â&#x20AC;? remarked ked David. As with most festivals, the e hard work of volunteers and d committee members, is the key y to a successful event like the e Peak Festival. Working behind d the scenes, long before and nd after the public has enjoyed the he show, the volunteerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contribution on is enormous. This year over 60 volunteers stepped up to make this sa great event, coming from as far away as New Zealand, Queensland and Victoria, but most of whom were from NSW or locals. Lizzie from Lizzie Flynn and the Reckoning remarked after her gig at Smiggins Hotel, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The variety of artists at the Peak Festival was amazing. I would thoroughly recommend Peak Festival to anyone who is interested in coming to the opening of the Australian ski season weekend, as they will see great entertainment. The organisers, Belinda Shore, Polly Snowden and David De Santi have programmed a music festival to appeal to an audience of all ages and tastes.â&#x20AC;?
19 By the time the Peak Festival kicked off in Perishe r this year, the resort had eight lifts running and all systems were go due to the early opening of the resort on Friday June 2. The weather was als o right on cue to set Perisher Re sort up for a cracker weekend of sn ow sports and play, music, poetry, fun and food.

Smiggins’ Snowline retire
After running Snowline Ski Centre at Smiggin Holes for 43 winters, Colin and Sigrid Dare feel that it is time to get a well earned rest, retire from the ski industry and pass it on to the younger generation to drive the business forward. Colin and Sigrid Dare got a taste for skiing as teenagers. They married in 1969, and soon after they purchased a block of land in the small, new village of Jindabyne. In 1973 Colin left his job as a diesel marine engineer in Sydney and the young couple headed for Smiggin Holes where Colin found winter work with Alan Limbrick at Snowline Ski Centre. Alan Limbrick and his business partner, Dick Gilkes opened Snowline Ski Centre in the Alpine Gate at Smiggin Holes in 1960, prior to which they ran all the ski departments in the Sydney Grace Bros stores. In 1966 they moved Snowline to the current premises which were extended in the 1990s to make the ski hire larger. Alan also built Smiggin’s first T-bar ski lift where the duplex T-bar is now situatedColin was to join the staff of the Snowy Mountains Authority in summer, but Alan offered full time work and after two years Colin was appointed manager. “Since 1973 I’ve always been busy” said Colin. He recalled “1973 was a lean year no snow, plenty of mud, and the lifts ran about eight times.” Sigrid and Colin wondered what they had done but things picked up. Snowline Ski Centre has always had a ski hire with retail as well. Over the years the Centre has been built up to a complete ski shop which opens on the June Long Weekend and closes on the October Long Weekend. It provided employment for nine to ten staff members, depending on snow conditions. Staff in-house accommodation and a kitchen came with
the employment package. Sigrid was “Mum” to all the boys, and occasionally girls were on the team. Families and day trippers were Snowline’s principal customers. With plenty of repeat business, including a third generation of kids, there was never a need to advertise. One customer, who was skiing well into his 80s, always wanted only Colin to do his skis each year. The secret of success was due to the quality of service given by the Centre’s staff, believed Colin. When the doors to the Centre closed in October, the work for “jack of all trades” Colin did not ease off as he was busy with ski repairs, maintenance and getting the boilers ready for the next winter. “Working 12 to 14 hour days 7 days a week – in winter the Snowline Ski Centre opened at 7.30 am and closed at 6 pm, and with their heads down all the way – left no time for hobbies, reading or leading a balanced life” said Colin. Each summer the Dare family moved to their Jindabyne home. Danielle who was born in 1972 and Ben (1976) went to Jindabyne Primary School. On reaching high school, Danielle went to boarding school in Yass and Ben to Goulburn. Danielle now lives in Buderim and Ben in Cairns. Whilst Sigrid and he still enjoyed the life style, they think that it is time for the younger generation to drive the business forward. This is to be done by Rhythm Sports who have purchased the business and will carry
Colin and Sigrid Dare (May 2017) on the high standard of service that is expected at Snowline Ski Centre. Colin and Sigrid feel the business is in the good hands of professional operators who have a well established shop in Cooma and several outlets in Japan. Rhythm Sports will employ some of the previous staff of Snowline. In summing up their 43 years of caring for Snowline Ski Centre’s customers, Colin concluded “We have had a wonderful life and we will miss our customers and friends we have made along the way. However, we will now have time to spend with our grandchildren who live in Queensland.”

Born in Sydney on May 9, 1928, Geoffrey was the third born son of WWI decorated pilot, Geoffrey Forrest Hughes and Margaret Eyre Sealy Vidal. A student at Riverview, Geoffrey excelled at sports and his introduction to skiing was at the Hotel Kosciusko during winter holidays with his siblings, Thomas, Constance and Robert. Like his father, grand-father and elder brother, Geoffrey went into the law and was admitted as a solicitor in NSW in 1952. He joined the family firm, Hughes and Hughes, which later became Cutler, Hughes, Harris and Garvin, where he worked for nearly 50 years. In the mid-1950’s, Geoffrey began to spend more time on the Main Range of the Snowy Mountains. He was a member of the Ski Club of Australia and the Ski Tourers Association. He loved ski-touring and photography – his collection of photographs of skiing on the Main Range in the 1950’s and the developing ski resort of Thredbo, is without measure. Geoffrey raced in the Australian Downhill Championships on the George Chisholm Course in the early 1950’s. On one of these visits he was exploring for better snow above the race course when he saw on the far side of the valley, the Snowy Mountain Authority bulldozers carving the first stage of the Alpine Way, which would provide access into the Thredbo Valley. In 1955, Geoffrey, Tony. Charles and Eric formed a syndicate registered as the Kosciusko Chairlift and Thredbo Hotel Syndicate, to build a year-round resort in the Thredbo Valley. Geoffrey owned
The last of the four men who established Thredbo ski resort in 1957, died on March 12, 2017. He was Geoffrey Eyre Forrest Hughes. The other members of the original syndicate registered in 1955, of Kosciusko Chairlift and Motel were Tony Sponar, Charles Anton and Eric Nicholls. The syndicate later included Thyne Reid and John Gam.
40% and the others 20% each. In the winters of 1955 and 1956, Tony, Charles and Geoffrey made exploratory trips to the Thredbo Valley, seeking out the best site for the Village. Geoffrey later recalled that together, they worked hard and very happily in the site selection phase of their partnership. In 1956 Kosciusko Thredbo Limited was registered and Geoffrey convinced Thyne Reid to join the syndicate and Thyne came on-board as a major shareholder and Chairman. Geoffrey negotiated the headlease for Thredbo with the appropriate government departments. It is still regarded as legally and commercially advantageous to Kosciuszko Thredbo. His hand-drawn Master Plan for Thredbo was largely completed as dreamed. It included the beginners area at Friday Flat, the Crackenback (Kosciuszko) Chairlift and Merritts Chair. Village sites for accommodation and private clubs are situated as drawn on the plan with Crackenback Ski Club which he founded with his brother Tom and friends, receiving the best site in the village, after the Hotel. Thredbo developed quickly and many commercial lodges, clubs and private family homes were constructed in 1958 and 1959. With the need for uphill transport at the resort opening at the beginning of the 1957 ski season, inventive Geoffrey set about designing a drive station for the first tow at Thredbo. He supervised its construction by the members of the Crackenback Ski Club. The
Crackenback Chairlift was opened in July 1958 by Thyne Reid and Dawn Hughes whom Geoffrey married in 1956. Geoffrey continued to improve his skiing and in 1957 he was selected for the NSW alpine team and later as a reserve in the Australian ski team in 1958. However in 1958, while race training with Leonhard Erharter, Geoffrey hit a tree and fractured his skull. After the accident he ceased ski racing and his interest in skiing waned, although he continued to return to Thredbo with his children, Damian, Greg and Genevieve during the early 1960s. The syndicate’s first profit was in 1961 but that was insufficient capital to build the required hotel under the lease agreement. The resort was sold to Amalgamated Holdings in 1962 and Geoffrey’s legal career, family life, sailing and golf amongst other interests, took over. However, his legacy resulting in the international ski resort of Thredbo continues and his first love of the Snowy Mountains is now shown by the enthusiasm for ski racing is demonstrated by that his grandchildren Phoebe, Penelope and Geoffrey. This is a momentous event for the patrol - 50 years of volunteer service protecting and rescuing alpine visitors. Everyone is welcome. On Saturday 28 October 2017 from 6:30pm to 11:30pm a Formal Black Tie Dinner will be held at Dockside, Darling Harbour Sydney. The cost is $135 per head, which includes dinner and beverages. Tickets are available on-line, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t leave it too late! Presentations to Volunteer Ski Patrollers granted the Australian
National Medal for service will take place on the night. The National Medal is an Australian award given for long service by operational members of eligible organisations. It was introduced in 1975, as an original component of the new Australian honours system. The eligible organisations have in common that their members serve or protect the community

Fresh faces ,fresh food at the Brumby Bar
The Brumby Bar in Jindabyne recently changed hands, after being on the market for some time, and is rapidly being transformed by its new owners Chris and Poss Higgs and their team into an exciting gastro-pub. “The Brumby has been brought back to life, and into today” said Chris Higgs, new co-owner. “It was tired, even Stumpy is quite open about that”. Stumpy Pendergast and his wife Marie were “picky” about who took over the The Brumby. Stumpy and Marie operated the Brumby Bar since 1987 and have now retired. Both Chris and Patricia (Poss) have experience in event management, including the food and beverage component, and have lived in the area for the past 12 years. They moved here in 2005 for one season, bought a house in 2007 and Chris began working at Perisher full-time. From
there he became Mountain Manager at Charlotte’s Pass. Chris is also involved in the Australian Rally Championships and major wakeboarding events in Australia. From the outside, it still looks the same, but in the eight short days between settlement and opening night on Saturday June 3, a major transformation of the kitchen and menu was executed. “Like an episode of The Block” said Maddie Cole, the Brumby’s new Bar Manager. By moving one wall and combining the “Cook your Own” area into the kitchen, it has changed the dynamics of the kitchen area. “Now you can see the chef, like a performance” she said. Maddie Cole was ready for a challenge when she was approached for the role as the Brumby Bar Manager, and quickly took up the offer

She did her first season in Thredbo in 2009, in the Bar and Bistro at Friday Flat, then went to Banff and Whistler for a couple of winters The to Hamilton Island and back to Jindabyne in 2011 part-time, and full-time for the last three years as Duty Manager at the Lake Jindabyne Hotel. Maddie is looking forward to working with the new owners to shape the Brumby Bar as a premium venue in Jindabyne. “I have always had ideas, everything here is brand new” she said. The Brumby Bar menu is veering towards the Gastro Pub model. They will have traditional pub meals, yet modernised for today, made from local produce, fresh ingredients with “paddock to plate” as their catchcry, especially for seafood, which is sourced from the South Coast. Greg Pieper is the new executive chef, and brings a new creative energy and experience to the Brumby Bar’s menu. Greg ran a restaurant with his family on Far North Coast, Bamboo, that was credited with SMH Good Food Guide Chef Hat for three consecutive years, four consecutive stars by the Courier Mail Good Food Guide, three consecutive Plates by Restaurant and Catering NSW and was named Chef of the Year for four consecutive years by the Gold Coast Magazine Restaurant Industry Awards. Greg’s decision to move to Jindabyne in 2010 was based on family and lifestyle factors, and re-ignited his career. He found himself running multiple outlets at Lake Crackenback Resort as Food and Beverage Manager and Executive Chef
for six years, where he was awarded a coveted hat from The Australian - Good Food Guide ‘Chef of the Year’, for four consecutive years from 2013 to 2016. Greg was inspired by the opportunity to work with Chris on this project “it is something completely different to what I have done before” The food is not pretentious or over the top. Greg’s philosophy is driven by fresh ingredients, with 98% of product being made in house, including butchering and braising of the meats. Pasture-fed beef and fresh seafood from the South Coast will feature on the unpretentious menu. “It is all about good wholesome service and good comfort food” he states. The Brumby will run some special events during winter, but their focus is on the local clientele - especially families, young professionals and business owners. After their first winter, a full summer menu with more fresh seafood will be offered. “Summer is a lot longer than winter” Chris remarks. They want families to feel welcome dining here and are currently setting up a new area with some equipment for children. “Jindabyne was lacking a place where Mum and Dad can have a good meal and glass of wine, and the kids can eat and have a play” says Chris. The restaurant seats 150 inside and there are plans to create a dedicated quality multi-function space upstairs that will cater to business and groups to connect, dine, meet-and-greet and be fully equipped with facilities for meetings and teleconferencing. “Jindabyne is definitely ready for the new Brumby Bar” both Chris, Poss, Greg and Maddie agreed.

LAOKO fundraising for Wildlife Orphans L.A.O.K.O. (Looking After Our Kosciuszko Orphans) is a wildlife rescue group based in the Snowy Mountains region of NSW, covering a large area from Bredbo to the Victorian border.
LAOKO volunteers served up a feast for the fundraising cause at their Sausage sizzle in Perisher over the long weekend.

Cold snap: Charles Davis braves the cold
to bring us the best in wildlife photography â&#x20AC;&#x153;If thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a storm, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be out there. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where you get the most beautiful photos; in the blizzards.â&#x20AC;? Wildlife photographer, Charles Davis, has made himself known as one of the best in the business with his mesmerising photographs of nature at its wildest. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People want to see what they wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t usually see when they go outside,â&#x20AC;? he says. Charles has spent days on the mountains skiing kilometres on end to get the perfect shot. He once skied 15km, 2000m above sea level to find a group of echidnas trudging up the side of a mountain. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I really like echidnas; theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re so misunderstood.
People think theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re these shy little creatures that run away or crawl up into a ball, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re really not. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re so cheeky and curious; theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll climb up a tree and fall out only to climb up it again. They go swimming, shoot water out of their nostrils, and do headstands. In breeding season I saw nine of them in a line following each other around, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re adorable.â&#x20AC;? But the job doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come without its risks. Charles has found himself lost on the side of a mountain
surrounded by fog. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been blown over in the middle of a blizzard and spent an unplanned night in Cascade Hut. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been charged by brumbies, swooped by birds and had his thumb bitten by an emu. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t killed myself yet, which is good,â&#x20AC;? he notes. Charles grew up on a farm in Nimmitabel, surrounded by animals and creativity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of my family members are artists. Both my aunts are painters, my grandfather is a landscape painter, my sister, Moni, does charcoal drawings, so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always had the arty stuff all around me.â&#x20AC;? When Charles left school, all he wanted to do was snowboard. He
travelled the world following the snow and took photos with a small camera given to him for his 21st birthday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I was in Canada, I busted my little camera so I bought a bigger one. I came home and it was like a whole new world had opened up. I just kept taking photos and people kept wanting to buy them.â&#x20AC;? Charles will showcase his latest work at his new gallery in Cooma over the winter period. All the photographs have been taken around the Monaro, from Nimmitabel to Tantangara. Now on to the coffee, Pirate Expresso, a local Sydney roaster with a unique Brazilian, Ethiopian, and Indian blend creates perfect harmony. It is full bodied, low-acid, smooth and rich. Original snowcruiser finds home in museum The Cooma Car Club has recently accepted a donation of one of the first Snow Cruisers to traverse the slopes of Thredbo and the Snowy Mountains.
The machine will become part of the club’s developing museum. Johnny Abbotsmith brought the OMC Snow Cruiser to the mountains in 1964. In the Snow Cruiser he travelled only on the tops of the Alpine Country, including a trip from Kiandra to Thredbo – 85 miles (140km) in one day. The Snow Cruisers were imported from America where they were manufactured in Michigan.
They arrived in a pack for assembly with a comprehensive owner/manual accompanying them. The machines measured 107 inches (272cms), by 32 inches (81cm) by 44 inches (112cms) including the windshield. With a 2-cycle opposed twin engine, the cruisers were supposed to have a top speed of 30 miles (48km) per hour. They could seat two adults and one child and travelled
on two skis at the front, while sitting on a flexible track which was fully adjustable. They also had disc brakes plus a hand brake and a park brake. Local legend has it that they went like the clappers. This new form of transport was very welcome in the snowfields. Relatively light and very manoeuvrable, they were very useful for a number of different purposes. They were integral to a snow rescue in the 1960s, allowing searchers to access difficult terrain. Johnny Abbotsmith used his Snow Cruiser for this snow rescue – a Land Rover had been missing for three months. Victorian police and Rescue organised a search for R
two weeks without success. Jindabyne riders searched on horseback, again without success. Johnny was called in to search the high tops and with a plane escort, where he searched the upper regions of Cascade Falls. Johnny noticed fox tracks, which all seemed to head in the one direction and he followed. Within an hour, he finally found the three people almost breathing their last. They were finally brought back to Thredbo, all safe and sound. But introducing the Snow Cruiser was only one tale about a man who had huge influence on the development of the Snowy Mountains Skifields. He came to the mountains in 1932 when working as an
assayer of a metal exploration company. He worked at the Hotel Kosciusko, learnt to ski and within a couple of years, he was a qualified ski instructor. Soon after he joined the Niagara Steam Ship Company and sailed across the pacific to Vancouver, where he jumped ship. This led to an interesting career in Canada, which included packing stores at Grouse Mountain and Hollyburn Ski Resorts, then on a tractor train, then a job dog driving upstream to an Indian Camp where he sledged medicine and stores up and brought skins back to the depot.

Original snow cruiser finds home in museum
Continued from page 48 After the winter thaw, when Johnny tried to collect his pay for work he had done as an agent for the Royal Mounted Police, he was nabbed for jumping ship three months before. By luck, the Niagara Steam Ship Company was in town, he was given his old job back and travelled back to Australia, washing dishes en route. After a couple more trips he again took up his job as an instructor at the Hotel Kosciusko. The outbreak of the Second World War stopped his plans to return to Canada and saw him, instead, in the AIF. Johnny saw service in the Western Desert, Tobruk, Palistine, Lebanon and Syria, He joined the ski troops, training
more than 10,000 troops of all nations, where he was second in command in instructing and stores. He was wounded at El Alamain end eventually discharged back in Sydney. From here he went to Bega working as a shift electrician at the power house, but then joined the US Navy, set sail for New Guinea and the war zone. He worked as an engineer on the LST landing craft until it sunk at the landing in the Philippines. He was put ashore in Queensland but returned to the mountains, once again as an instructor. This was about the time the Kosciusko State park was formed and Johnny joined the park staff to patrol the high country. In this role, he met Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson and this led to an expedition to Heard Island.
He recalls “There was weather observation surveying, geology and cosmic ray carried out for the first time on the island and declared for the Australian Government by Commander Dickson of the Navy; S Campbell Leader of the ANARE and J Abbotsmith, engineer of Expedition. Back on the mainland, he joined the Water Irrigation Commission and learnt measuring and gauging rivers and water flows in NSW. This was the time the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme was being mooted. From his work, a paper supporting the feasibility of the scheme was developed and the rest is history. Johnny built the weather station at Spencer’s Creek while working
with the SMA. After a while he resigned and built the first rope tow at in NSW at Smiggins Holes, then another at Perisher and the big tow at Kanama on the main range. Johnny also built ski lodges in Perisher, later selling the tows and some oversnow transport to Ken Murray and moved from the skifelds to a small farm at the Creel. Initially farming, he later established a shop and petrol station. When Lake Jindabyne was built, he moved to higher ground and built a caravan park, ski hire, boat hire, café and petrol station at the intersection the Alpine Way and Kosciusko Road. After many years, Johnny and wife Phyll finally retired to relax, travel and enjoy life.

Make sure you check road conditions before you travel. Snow chains should be fitted as directed by authorised NPWS, RTA and Police officers. Chain inspections take place randomly, with fines exceeding $300 if you do not have chains on the vehicle.
