STAY SNOW SAFE NSW Police are urging the community to have a plan and stay ‘Snow Safe’ during the 2020 ski season. The official NSW snow season began on Monday June 22, with ski resorts opening throughout the week and enacting their ‘COVIDsafe’ plans. Additional police will be deployed to the Snowy Mountains region from across the state as part of the high-visibility police operation. Visitors can expect to see officers from General Duties, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Southern Region Enforcement Squad, licensing police and other specialist officers – including trained Alpine Operators – throughout the season.

“Police will continue to patrol these areas to ensure compliance and we ask the public to continue to adhere to restrictions and ensure they observe physical distancing guidelines.” Southern Region Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Greg Moore APM, said police will be out in force to ensure the safety of the community.

“People can expect to see police out and about throughout the season targeting road safety, alcohol-related crime, anti-social behaviour and personal safety,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Moore said.

NSW Police are also urging hikers visiting the region to ensure their personal safety by submitting a Trip Intention Form and hiring a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) before heading out into the national park.

“We will have additional staff seconded to Jindabyne from other police districts who will support the work of our local police, and other units such as Highway Patrol, the Dog Squad and the Region Enforcement Squad.

HEALTH SERVICES With numbers of COVID-19 cases reducing and government restrictions easing, health workers across the Snowy Monaro are urging visitors and locals alike to remain cautious. “We cannot afford to become complacent,” says Southern NSW Local Health District Cluster General Manager Nicola Yates. “The most important thing is that everyone in our community, and who visits our community, does the right thing. While we all continue to follow the social distancing rules, wash our hands regularly and stay home if you are feeling unwell, the likelihood of COVID-19 cases in our region is significantly less.” Cooma Hospital is the main hospital for the Snowy Monaro region. It does not have an Intensive Care Unit and only has the capacity to intubate one patient temporarily, before they can be transferred to either Canberra or Bega. The snow season always puts more pressure on the local health services. Jindabyne’s population alone usually triples during the winter months. With more people, and increases in injuries presenting from the slopes, our hospitals and medical centres are already stretched. Should a COVID-19 outbreak occur as well, the local facilities simply do not have the

resources to cope. This is why local health workers and our local community implore everyone who visits our beautiful region to abide by the social distancing regulations. If you are experiencing any flu-like symptoms while visiting the Snowy Monaro, such as a fever, sore throat, head ache, fatigue, aches and pains, runny nose, cough or breathing issues the best thing to do is get tested at the COVID-19 Clinic at the Cooma Hospital. First call 1800 999 880 and select Option 1. You can then attend the clinic at the hospital on Victoria Street, Cooma. This is the only testing clinic in the Snowy Monaro. The Cooma Hospital has managed to secure a GeneXpert machine for the duration of the ski season, which will allow test results to be returned within a matter of hours, rather than days. The Cooma Hospital has also changed some of its layout in order to cope with the risk involved with spreading COVID-19. Two separate Emergency Departments will operate throughout the snow season, and potentially beyond. One will deal with COVID-19 related patients, the other will deal with all other emergency presentations.

This means patients from other areas of the hospital will not come into contact with anyone, including staff, who have been in the COVID-19 Clinic. While these measures will help stop the spread, the main way an outbreak can be prevented is for everyone to do the right thing.

While the Snowy Monaro community is looking forward to welcoming back visitors for the snow season after recent bushfires and now the COVID-19 pandemic, it asks all visitors to not become complacent whilst they are here.

RHYTHM MURAL, BEAUTY AND CHAOS The Rhythm mural is becoming an annual icon, with visitors and locals keen to check out the fresh installation along the side of the Cooma ski hire empire each season. Local artist Mike Shankster is the genius behind the design. You can

However, regular skiers and snowboarders will appreciate the artworks message and relate to the hectic experience of hitting the slopes in previous years. “The piece represents the unique and beautiful surrounds of Snowy Mountains and also the chaotic nature in which the season brings,” says Mike. “You’ll see there is a inscription to JB Carpenter in the bottom right corner of the mural. This entire piece is dedicated to Jake Burton Carpenter (1954 - 2019) the founder of Burton Snowboards, who passed away last year. Jake Burton Carpenter was known as the person who brought snowboarding to the masses and helped create the sport we know and love today.”

There is a large traffic jam up the back of the mural, showcasing the gruelling snail pace drive up to the mountains in what seems like a never-ending line of traffic. You can also see the ski tube, chockablock with punters, blasting its way back down the hill. There is also a tent, and a makeshift clothes line attached to the Strzelecki monument at Jindabyne. This is in reference to camping along the Jindy foreshore and all the debacles that come with it. There are so many other iconic Snowy Mountains references, and it seems like you notice something new each time you look at it. Mike has again captured the unique experience that is a visit to the Snowy Mountains at the height of the season.

SKI SEASON 2020 The ski fields are officially open. After much uncertainty as to whether the 2020 season would go ahead, the Australian snow resorts were able to begin operating on Monday 22 June, albeit with considerable operational changes. While circumstances are expected to change as the season progresses and COVID-19 restrictions ease, the current operational requirements for snow resorts this season are as follows:

Lift tickets Lift tickets are at the crux of confusion around the 2020 season. All resorts have been required to place daily limit caps on the numbers of people, reducing the number of visitors by as much as 50 percent. This means that for all resorts, visitors will initially have to pre-book passes online. Same day lift tickets are not on offer for Thredbo and Perisher. Thredbo - Thredbo has cancelled the 2020 ‘365 Pass,’ opting for day passes only.

Thredbo lift tickets went on sale June 11 for $159, an almost 50 percent mark-up on previous seasons. This did not seem to lower demand, with Thredbo’s online store crashing due to unprecedented traffic, at one point seeing 25,000 people trying to purchase tickets simultaneously. Thredbo lift passes are available at www. shop.thredbo.com.au Perisher - Like Thredbo, Perisher day passes have seen a price increase, now available at $152. Due to resort limit caps, season pass holders will be required to reserve days online. . The first round of tickets for the period between June 24 and July 5 is now available online. Three day deals are available at $349 for three days. The second and third rounds of three-day passes are set to rise in price to $433 and $498, respectively. Charlotte Pass - Aside from resort limit caps, 2020 will be no different from any other season for Charlotte Pass. Lift tickets will be offered at the same price as previous years, with all regular discounts and deals also being made available from 2020. Charlotte Pass lift tickets can be purchased over the phone on (02) 6457 1555.

As COVID-19 restrictions ease and circumstances change, resort operations, limit caps and in turn, lift pass policies are likely to be subject to change.

Lifts Lifts at all resorts will be required to operate at a reduced capacity to allow for social distancing. Family members will be allowed to ride together on lifts. Otherwise, numbers will be limited according to lift type. The new Merrits Gondola at Thredbo will be operating at a reduced capacity.

Access, backcountry and National Parks The Perisher/Blue Cow Ski Tube will still be operating for the 2020 season but at a reduced capacity with amended timetables. Guests will be required to pre-book Ski Tube tickets online in advance and those with luggage will be required to travel outside peak operating times. On-day bookings are not accepted. There have been no changes to Kosciuszko National Park entry passes, and restrictions have been lifted to allow snow play in a safe manner, allowing visitors to fully take advantage of the Kosciuszko backcountry, so long as it is in a safe manner. “For any sporting activity that occurs on the snow, you need either a prepurchased lift pass from one of the resorts or a National Parks and Wildlife Service Trip Intention Form for backcountry, snowshoe and cross

country activities,” a Department of Planning Industry and Environment spokesperson said. Those who wish to enter the national park and not partake in any sporting activities will simply be required to purchase and display a National Park Entry Pass. Guided backcountry tours are also available from a number of professional outfits in the region, such as K7 Adventures in Jindabyne, and cover a range of back country snow activities.

Accommodation Hotels, lodges and apartments are open across all resorts. They are still required to operate at a reduced capacity so bookings are both essential and competitive. Many accommodation venues have seen high volumes of bookings even before the resorts opened. Certain member-based ski lodges have yet to announce opening plans due to liability complications. Those who are not opening are communicating with their members.

Lessons and activities Snow play restrictiond have been lifted so activities like tobogganing, snowman makeing and snowball fights are bacl on the cards. Lesson programs will be limited across all resorts, with most opting for private lessons only. Again, this situation is expected to be updated as the season progresses.

Food and drinks Indoor physical distancing requirements remain in place, meaning food and beverage options will be limited, especially for eating in. At least in the early season, most options will be takeaway only and contactless payments will be required at many venues. As COVID-19 measures are eased, it is hoped that food and beverage venues will be able to operate fully.

Individual responsibility With physical distancing requirements still in place, resorts are asking anyone who is feeling unwell or considered high risk to please stay home and avoid endangering others. Guests are expected to keep 1.5m distance from others and adhere to the Government cleanliness and physical distancing guidelines as well as the relevant alpine responsibility codes. BUSHFIRE CLOSURES Much of the state was devasted by bushfires over the 2019/2020 summer. The Snowy Mountains also experienced significant damage, particularly in the Kosciuszko National Park. Kiandra, Selwyn, and many historical huts were completely destroyed. Cabramurra also suffered extensive damage. According National Parks and Wildlife Services, some sections of Kosciuszko National Park which have been burnt remain closed. This is because they still may pose a risk to visitors due to dangerous trees and damaged infrastructure.

Specific areas which are closed due to the fires include: Areas within the northern section of the park: • Kiandra, Landers Falls lookout, Wolgal Hut, Buddong Falls and Cabramurra township. Snowy Hydro’s operational town of Cabramurra suffered significant fire damage and, for safety reasons, is temporarily closed. The following key roads in Kosciuszko National Park remain closed due to fire damage:

Cabramurra area: • Link Road from Snowy Mountains Highway to Goat Ridge Road, Tooma Road - KNP5 (Khancoban to Cabramurra Road). The road is expected to reopen in December 2020. Goats Ridge Road and Elliot Way. The road is expected to reopen in May 2021. • Kings Cross Road.

SNOWY2.0 IMPACT ON AREA If your travels in the Snowy Mountains take you to Adaminaby and into Snowy Valleys, you will probably see plenty of truck movements. Snowy 2.0 is kicking off, with construction just about to begin at Lobs Hole. The Snowy 2.0 project is an expansion of the Snowy Scheme, which generates electricity by pumping water through turbines. The Snowy 2.0 project involves creating a tunnel and an underground power station

between Tantangara Dam and Talbingo Dam. Water will be pumped to the higher dam when the demand for energy is low, and then released to generate energy when demand is high. Snowy 2.0 will provide an additional 2,000 megawatts (MW) of dispatchable generating capacity and approximately 350,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of large-scale storage to the National Electricity Market (NEM). In other words, this is enough energy storage to power three million homes for a week.

Snowy 2.0 will create 2000 jobs during its construction, which is expected to take about five or six years to complete. This has provided a silver lining to the Snowy Monaro and Snowy Valleys community, who have suffered significant economic impacts from ongoing drought, bushfires and COVID-19. Relying heavily on tourism, the economy of the Snowies was hit hard when it was declared a no travel zone during the bushfires for the school summer holidays. Teamed with travel

restrictions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and drastic changes to the 2020 snow season, Snowy 2.0 will at least bring new workers and their families to live in the region, providing the economic boost it needs. GO GO GONDOLA Australia’s only alpine Gondola has been launched for the 2020 winter snow season at Thredbo Resort. This exciting development sees Merritts double chairlift replaced with a high speed, eight-person Gondola that will quadruple the capacity of the previous lift and further enhance the awardwinning Thredbo experience. In addition to the Gondola, a fully automated snowmaking system on the

popular ‘Dream Run’ has been installed as well as other slope works. This development will allow more reliable access to Friday Flat and the mid-station of the new Merritts Gondola as well as better access to a wide variety of intermediate and advanced tree runs. “After years of planning, it is so great to see these developments finally come to life. We are hugely excited to be the first

If you are coming for skiing or snowboarding in resort areas of Kosciuszko National Park this winter, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t leave home without a valid pre-purchased lift pass. From Tuesday 9 June 2020, visitors wishing to undertake on-snow back

country activities will need to register a Trip Intention Form (TIF) with NPWS prior to their arrival. Examples of on-snow back country activities, which can be undertaken after a TIF is lodged, include back country snow shoeing, cross country skiing, skiing and snowboarding.

EXPERIENCE REAL BACKCOUNTRY WITH K7 ADVENTURES With limited access to ski resorts for winter 2020, many snow-goers still eager to take advantage of the season are starting to eye off Kosciuszko National Park (KNP) with thoughts of backcountry adventure. “It’s absolutely worth it,” says Acacia Rose of K7 Adventures. “The experience of being in the backcountry - the views, the sense of space and silence - there’s nothing else like it.” While a strong intermediate skill level is recommended as a requirement for backcountry skiing and boarding, K7 also offers a wide variety of activities catering to all ages and skill levels. OFF THE SLOPES DAYS So you’ve booked your day pass, and are keen to hit the slopes after months of lockdown. $3.3M TOURISM BOOST More than $3 million has been allocated to Gaden Trout Hatchery at Jindabyne to enhance its tourism operations. Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro John Barilaro announced the significant investment to help boost tourism and jobs after what has been a challenging start to 2020. The NSW Government will contribute $3.3 million from the Regional Growth - Environment and Tourism Fund to revitalise the educational centre at tourist attraction, Gaden Trout Hatchery. Mr Barilaro said the project will deliver the infrastructure required for a modern nature-based tourism hub such as a new educational facility with an office, meal room, toilets, carpark and integration of the Thredbo Valley Track into the hatchery picnic area. “Gaden Trout Hatchery has been a premier local attraction in the Snowy

Mountains community for more than 50 years and plays a vital role in supporting the booming summer tourism market in the region,” Mr Barilaro said. “The new education centre will build on the success that the existing trout fishing industry in this part of the state is known so well for, giving locals a better appreciation of the work done at the hatchery and supporting increased production at the hatchery. “These improvements will transform this well-loved Snowy icon into a mustsee destination for school and business groups with rewarding learning opportunities that encourage return visits and creates jobs for people living locally. “I know this will be very welcome news for the community, who have been doing it tough dealing with drought,

bushfires and now the ongoing impacts of COVID-19.”

Government support and plans on putting the funds to good use.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor Peter Beer said integration of the Thredbo Valley Track biking and walking trail into the hatchery picnic area will entice bike riders and hikers to visit the educational centre during their next jaunt on the mountain.

“The funding for us means a lot, the funding will do a lot for the local area and trying to get fisherman back to NSW,” says Mitch.

“During the warmer months, riders and walkers will be able to stop by, have a bite to eat and learn a little bit about the other great activities they can enjoy while they are visiting the area,” Cr Beer said. “I thank the NSW Government for this initiative to develop another world class attraction that will bring tourists to the Snowy Mountains and tablelands on a year-round basis.”

“With the educational centre being built and renovations it will bring more kids into fishing, it will also make our jobs for those who work here a lot easier to produce larger fish and better fish for future generations to go recreational fishing.” The $300 million Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund is part of the NSW Government’s commitment to the delivery of infrastructure projects that improve the productivity and competitiveness of the state under Restart NSW.

WINTER WASTE WEEKEND IN JULY Snowy Valleys Council has moved the date for the scheduled Winter Waste Weekend by one month to help ensure a COVID-19 safe environment. Normally held on the first weekend in June the next Snowy Valleys Waste Weekend will now run over the first weekend in July. Council’s Executive Director Infrastructure Heinz Kausche said, “Our Transfer Stations experience a

large increase in traffic over a Waste Weekend and it is important that all sites are adequately set up to manage the influx and have the COVID-19 safety protocols in place”. Waste Weekends complement Council’s regular waste collection service allowing residents to dispose of a range of household waste that doesn’t fit in the kerbside bins. During a waste weekend residents can

MAPPING NATIVE RAT GENOME Scientists from The University of Western Australia have unveiled a genetic analysis of an endangered native rodent, which could help researchers and conservation authorities better understand how to protect the Australian species. DNA Zoo Australia Director Associate Professor Parwinder Kaur, from UWA’s School of Agriculture and Environment, said the medium-sized, short-tailed and broad-toothed rat – the Tooarrana – is classified as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “Understanding endangered species like the Tooarrana at a genetic level

The scientists from UWA partnered with Museums Victoria and Oz Mammal Genomics to obtain a genome sample of the Tooarrana, a herbivore which thrives in high altitude forests and feeds on stems and seeds of grasses. “DNA Zoo Australia partners with Museums, conservation bodies, zoos and many other collaborators across Australasia to collect, sequence and analyse genomes that could help save Australian species,” Associate Professor Kaur said.

The giant limestone cliffs and crystal-clear creeks trickle their way into the Yarrangobilly River. European history consists of heritage guest houses that have operated since 1901. In early January 2020, a group of highly trained, skilled and experienced National Parks and Wildlife Service fire fighters defended the historic precinct and all of its buildings from the Dunns Road fire. These brave men worked very hard under disastrous fire conditions to save an Aussie icon from a ferocious fire that burned more than 33,000 hectares of Kosciuszko National Park. It has now been some months since the bushfires ended but the devastation is still evident. It is stunning to see all of the trees regrowing and the recent snowfalls make a stunning scene of black, white and green. The fire started on 28 December 2019 from a lightning strike north west of the National Park near the town of Adelong. The call was made on the 31st of December

to close and evacuate the Yarrangobilly Caves precinct, along with the rest of Kosciuszko National Park. A few Yarrangobilly staff returned in the following days to better prepare the precinct by setting up hoses and pumps, pruning gardens and clearing gutters. They also made invaluable decisions to isolate the diesel and gas tanks. There were concerns for how the unique and historical hydro/diesel power system at Yarrangobilly would survive. They also collected as many historical books, documents and pictures including the 100-year-old guest books and took them to Tumut for safe keeping.

and the water would run out, too late and the precinct would burn. Rather than deploy the sprinkler system and leave, the crew made the decisions to stay and defend.

On Saturday the 4th of January the fire took a run from the Batlow area and headed into the National Park, putting Yarrangobilly Caves, with its significant cultural and natural features, in its direct line.

The team finally returned home to their families for some well-deserved rest. What a fight!

After intense discussions with Tumut Fire Control, the team gathered in Tumut and were given the option to stay in town if they chose. The stored water for the sprinkler system in the precinct was limited so setting the sprinklers at the right time was critical â&#x20AC;&#x201C; too early

As embers rained down ahead of the main fire, the crew worked hard to put out new spot fires and continued to remove fuel from the front of the main fire. As it came closer the call was made and the crew retreated to the safety of the cave system. This gave them a chance to regroup and reassess the situation. They decided to head outside to spend the next several hours managing spot fires until conditions improved.

THREDBO ALPINE MUSEUM REOPENS Thredbo Alpine Museum welcomes you back once again after months of closure, firstly due to the summer bushfires followed by the Covid-19 crisis. With news of the ski field facilities reopening on June 22, we are pleased to advise our first opening will be Wednesday June 24. We will implement a “soft opening” schedule initially, of Saturdays and Sundays and mid- week Wednesdays. Opening hours are 1pm to 5pm. This will be reviewed as the season progresses and is subject to the availability of our valuable local volunteers. We have our Covid Safe plan in place. Our new exhibition theme for 2020/21 will be “Transport in the Snowies”. This features 160 years of how essential resources and later the skiing public accessed the Snowy Mountains including Kiandra , the Hotel Kosciusko, Charlotte Pass and ultimately Perisher and Thredbo. Supporting museum cameo displays of Count Pavel (Paul) Strzelecki’s ascent and naming of Mt Kosciusko in 1840, plus the strong connection of the Czech community in starting Thredbo in 1957 and beyond through Tony Sponar, who was born 100 years ago this year. Visitors to Cooma will no doubt notice the now disused railway lines which runs along the eastern side of town.

walls tiled, the plumbers will return to finish plumbing the showers, hand basins and kitchen sink and taps.

The railway came to Cooma in the late 1800s and provided a wonderful link to Bombala in the south all the way to Sydney in the north.

The CMR team is constantly looking forward, and is determined to present some platform rooms for public inspection ahead of the completion and opening of the main museum. To this end the Signal Box and Station Master’s (SM) Office will be fitted-out to demonstrate the high standard of restoration being undertaken at the station.

The last passenger/freight train out of Cooma ran in 1988 - but the railway continued to be used by the Cooma Monaro railway group for short trips as far as Chakola until a couple of years ago. The railway precinct is now undergoing a make-over, to restore to its former glory and hopefully, get the rolling stock back on the tracks again.

HISTORY RESTORED

The Cooma Monaro Railway (CMR) has been holding working bees of a weekend for some time now, and the efforts are certainly becoming obvious. Volunteers have continued to excavate the under-floorspace for the waiting room. A new jackhammer and some good hard yakka has the work halfway completed. The precinct fencing work continues, and gates are starting to be hung in the northwest corner of the yard. The completion of the fencing will allow CMR to have larger exhibits displayed on the platform, such as the old luggage trolley. Work in the District Locomotive Engineer’s building (DLE) also continues, with the floor tiling almost complete, which will allow CMR to start fitting toilets and cubical walls.The kitchen bench will soon be fitted in the DLE. With this done, and the bathroom

While the Signal Box is largely complete, although minor changes can be undertaken to match the room’s interior more closely to before the station was closed, the Station Master’s Office requires extensive detective work. The latest discovery in the SM Office has been the identity of a mysterious paint shadow. The large cricket batshaped shadow on the SM Office wall turned out to be a two-box fiddleback wooden wall telephone, a style of phone introduced into Australia in the 1890s and offered by the Post Master General’s department, created in 1901 and the forerunner of Telstra, for public rental from 1901 onwards. Now the problem is to find one! CMR has sourced a reproduction pillar desk for the SM Office, plus a 19th century Australian oak bookcase and hutch to take the place of one that was revealed in another SM Office paint shadow. CMR has also sourced some captain’s chairs of the type used by the railways, and finally the reproduction fireplace surrounds/mantlepieces should be installed soon.

It is a slow, methodical style of practice that moves students through the physical postures at a gentler pace than the faster flow-type classes, with a strong focus on breathing, techniques, and meditations. Each and every class has pranayama, breath techniques and kriya, mind techniques that evolve you in a certain direction, delivering a fully integrated experience for the student. The slow physical pace makes this style more accessible for beginners and the deeper energetic work makes it perfect for intermediate to advanced yogis – so it’s great for everybody. Jane has brought this unique and powerful product to Jindabyne, hoping to share the goodness with local residents and visitors to the area. LAKE JINDABYNE SAILING CLUB SETS SAIL

Members of the Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club will soon be able to store their boats and equipment in two much safer and modern sheds. The club was recently advised it would receive significant funding from the State Government. Member for Monaro John Barilaro said the club has been successful in securing more than $193,000 thanks to the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund. “I’m so excited to be announcing this much-needed funding, which will see

the existing dilapidated storage shed use replaced with two new sheds,” Mr Barilaro said. “The current facilities are just not up to scratch for this growing club and this upgrade will deliver the facilities the members deserve.” The grant will be used to demolish the existing tin shed and replace it with a new larger shed that will include a concrete floor, lighting and suitable storage for small sailing skiffs and equipment. Another smaller shed will also be

constructed to house the rescue boat and safety equipment. Mr Barilaro said the upgrades are a welcome addition to the club, which has seen growing enthusiasm in recent years in its junior programs. “The Jindabyne Sailing Club has been a big part of the local community since it was established in the 1950s,” Mr Barilaro said. “It is promising to see the interest, particularly from our young people, grow in this timeless sport. I know this upgrade will go a long way to helping

WALK IN TIME While Bombala has become well known for its healthy platypus population, beautiful surrounds and friendly community, the small town also has a rich history that is well worth exploring.

and the Friends of the Bombala Railway group have set the railway precinct up to better display the golden years of the railway, including some interesting pieces of rolling stock.

With many events on hold and gatherings postponed as the COVID-19 situation continues, what better time than now to enjoy a quiet stroll around Bombala to take in some of its most significant historic buildings?

Another well known site of the town is the impressive Olympia Theatre, which was originally opened as the Cinema Theatre in 1918, and still features its pressed metal faĂ§ade while now housing a successful gym business.

Bombala was gazetted in 1849, and has many excellent examples of buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. These are included in a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Walk Back in Timeâ&#x20AC;?, a self guided tour created by the Platypus Country Visitors Information Centre.

The Literary Institute on Caveat Street is also a well loved Bombala building, built from local bricks and designed by JFH Tilley. It features internal and external staircases and the upper storey provided gallery and theatre facilities from around 1871.

There are a total of 43 buildings on the tour, taking in everything from the better known landmarks of Bombala, to buildings that became private dwellings long ago and interesting sites that even locals may not be aware of.

Of course Bombala also boasts a series of churches, schools and bank buildings that are fascinating to view, with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Walk Back in Timeâ&#x20AC;? map giving their locations and where possible their construction dates.

Some of the better known sites include the old Bombala Railway Station, with the whole precinct having been included on the State Heritage Register, and refurbished to encourage visitors.

Many buildings have of course changed their roles over the years, with the original post office of 1885 becoming the Mail Coach Inn, the Bank of NSW becoming the RSL Club, and the former St Josephâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Convent of 1888 becoming the Lions Folk Museum, and later the Visitors Information Centre.

Steam trains operated on the line for 40 years from 1921, later being replaced by diesel and electric trains, with the last train service being in 1986. The railway footbridge is possibly the only one of its kind surviving in NSW,

NEW GROWTH FOR BATLOW CARAVAN PARK Snowy Valleys Council made the decision to purchase the additional six cabins for the Batlow Caravan Park in January as a direct response to the bushfire crisis with the intent to make them available as a temporary accommodation solution for local residents who were affected by the fires as quickly as possible. “It’s incredibly important for residents to be able to stay local following the bushfires, close to family, friends and contributing to the recovery efforts by being able to maintain their day to day routine,” said Snowy Valleys Council Mayor, Cr James Hayes. “This is particularly true for smaller communities, however we also know accommodation options in smaller communities can be limited.” “We are working with NSW Government Department of Family and Community Services to finalise the process for making the cabins available for those most in need for a period of up to two years at a nominal rent.
