MONASH BUSINESS SCHOOL
Director's message 2022 has not been as easy as we hoped for. The COVID-19 Omicron variant halted many of our in-person activities. Thanks to the vaccination drive, albeit a bit late, we hope to avoid further lockdowns in Melbourne, though many of us are still avoiding social gatherings! While it's not been a smooth ride, I am very pleased the second half of 2021 went well. We received very good feedback on the CDES external review, which will help progress our current activities. Our colleague Armand Sim will now finally be able to travel to Melbourne now the border has re-opened. We are now waiting for a new colleague, Emilia Tjernstrom, to join us in April. We also continued our COVID-19 and Beyond webinar series, and we ended the year with our Distinguished public lecture presented by Nobel Laureate Professor Esther Duflo. As the new semester is starting and we are coming back to the office to meet in-person, I hope we will have many more interactions while we continue virtual events such as webinars and hybrid seminar events. On behalf of the CDES, I thank you all for your continued engagement and support during this difficult time. I look forward to seeing many of you in-person soon. Wishing you the very best. Please stay well and safe. Regards,
Professor Asad Islam Director, Centre for Development Economics and Sustainability (CDES)
Our Impact Climate change and sustainability
We are conducting research on climate change and sustainability using surveys, experiments and administrative data from developing countries. Our researchers are also working with NGOs and policymakers to translate research into concrete action and influence policies on climate change issues in many countries. CDES researchers have recently worked on topics such as disaster and risk sharing, coping mechanisms fol lowing large-scale floods, targeting flood relief, recycling/waste disposal, air pollution and health/migration, promoting energy saving behaviour using behavioural interventions, how green infrastructure promotes air quality, and agriculture and climate change.
