“To know is nothing at all ... to imagine is everything.” —Akram Khan

2012—13

From the Chancellor In its 10 years of existence, the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, a genuine jewel of UC Davis, has truly transformed our campus and the Sacramento region. Arts and culture are at the heart of any university campus, both as a source of learning and pleasure and of creative and intellectual stimulation. I have been fortunate to be a part of several campuses with major performing arts centers, but no program I have experienced exceeds the quality of the Mondavi Center. The variety, quality and impact of Mondavi Center presentations enhance the worldwide reputation of our great research university. Of course, this great center serves many purposes. It is a place for our students to develop their cultural literacy, as well as a venue where so many of our wonderful faculty can share ideas and expertise. It is a world-class facility that our music, theater and dance students use as a learning laboratory. As a land grant university, UC Davis values community service and engagement, an area in which the Mondavi Center is also exemplary. Through school matinees, nearly 100,000 K–12 students have had what is often their first exposure to the arts. And through the center’s many artist residency activities, we provide up close and personal, life-transforming experiences with great artists and thinkers for our region. Thank you for being a part of the Mondavi Center’s 10th anniversary season.

Linda P.B. Katehi Chancellor, UC Davis

A message from the Executive Director In its 10-year history, the Mondavi Center has established itself as one of America’s most distinguished presenters of music, dance, speakers and theater in a venue recognized worldwide for its architectural beauty and exquisite acoustics. Over 1,000,000 people, including more than 100,000 area schoolchildren and tens of thousands of UC Davis students have been a part of making the Mondavi Center a true epicenter for the arts in our region. We are thankful for every one of those visits as we celebrate this, our 10th anniversary season. What is more meaningful than these impressive numbers, however, are the individual experiences we hear about every day: the student whose eyes are opened in wonder by a first School Matinee in Jackson Hall; the lifelong arts patron who discovers new ways into a favorite work; the UC Davis students who launch careers in the arts due to their time working at the Mondavi Center. During this 10th anniversary season—and well beyond!—we aspire to continue creating these Mondavi Moments. I think you will agree that the artistic quality and diversity of our 10th anniversary season has us well on our way to this goal. But it is the deeper work you often do not see—the artist residencies, the master classes, the internship opportunities— that make the Mondavi Center a truly distinctive engine for the arts in the Sacramento region. Your subscription purchases and generous donations go a long way toward insuring our continued ability to provide these opportunities.

10th Anniversary Season Sponsors

As always, I encourage you to keep an open mind as you browse the brochure. Of course, you will be drawn to those artists you hold dear. But pay attention, too, to the artists who may be new to you but who are doing wonderful work. Please consider taking the subscription journey with us! You will save money, get access to great seats and be rewarded with moments of discovery and delight.

The Mondavi Center’s first decade has been marked by a commitment to expanding the cultural offerings available to the UC Davis community and the greater Sacramento region: by presenting the finest touring artists in music, dance and theater; by providing a space to fully engage with artists and thinkers; and by opening up opportunities for UC Davis students and local artists to learn from touring artists.

Bonnie Raitt, making her Mondavi Center debut, represents the vibrant growth of the American Heritage series since it was launched in our 06–07 season. From Doc Watson to Steve Martin, the best in “roots” music has found a home in Jackson Hall. Part of our Chevron American Heritage Series; see page 20.

When Lang Lang first appeared at the Mondavi Center as a soloist with the China Philharmonic, he was still relatively unknown—though his technical and musical gifts were obvious. His return finds him a musician transformed, now a global classical celebrity and an educational groundbreaker, leading a wave of young Chinese students to be inspired by classical music.

featuring Jules Feiffer, Andrea Weber and Jane Ira Bloom In 2011, Jules Feiffer’s beloved cartoon character, the modern Dancer, was brought to life in a collection of very short films directed by Judy Dennis: A Dance to Spring, A Dance to Art, A Dance to Summer, A Dance to the Loss of Innocence, A Dance to the New Year and A Dance to the End of Summer. The Mondavi Center is proud to host the West Coast debut of the films, a pair of which will also be screened before each Studio Dance performance (see page 14 for more information). For this special live family-friendly event, the creative forces behind the films, including director Judy Dennis and producer Ellen Dennis, will bring the Dancer to vivid life onstage in Jackson Hall. Feiffer will create new Dancer cartoons, with Andrea Weber (Merce Cunningham Dance Company) choreographing and composer/saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom making music in the moment to interpret Feiffer’s drawings. Audience members will have the chance to join the Dancer event on stage. Just as the Dancer is an icon of optimism and earnestness, so will these live moments of creativity celebrate the creative spirit and inspire a new generation with the bracing, topical and rapturous world of Feiffer.

Director’s choice Three events $150/$123/$84 Jackson Hall Standard Seating

Director’s Choice As Executive Director of the Mondavi Center I have the privilege, along with my colleague and Associate Executive Director Jeremy Ganter, to select the artists that make up each season. The Director’s Choice series, then, offers me a place to narrow my focus to a selection of shows that are of particular interest. This season’s selection of three performances is special, as each of them came to fruition due to one of the many relationships we have built over the first 10 years. The Mondavi Center’s membership in Music Accord—a commissioning partnership among a number of leading music presenters—and a generous grant from The Mellon Foundation made the world premiere of a new song cycle by Mark Adamo possible. Thomas Hampson is a profound baritone, and the Jupiter String Quartet represents a new wave of string quartets that are moving this venerable chamber form forward. If you have not heard Adamo’s music, I think you will find it wonderfully lyrical—this should be a remarkable evening. Many of you witnessed Christopher Taylor’s astounding performance—from memory!—of Olivier Messiaen’s Vingt Regards. Taylor returns with another blockbuster work, the Goldberg Variations, and the Steinway-Moór Concert Grand, the only surviving dual manual Steinway in existence. The two keyboards make some of the trickier passages in the Goldbergs more manageable, though certainly not easy!

4

Thomas Hampson, baritone with Jupiter String Quartet Schubert String Quartet in E-flat Major, D. 87 (Op. 125, No. 1) Adamo New Work for Voice and String Quartet Wolf Italian Serenade for String Quartet Selected Lieder for Voice and String Quartet Praised by The New York Times for his “ceaseless curiosity,” baritone Thomas Hampson is one of the most respected, innovative and sought-after soloists performing today. The exuberantly talented Jupiter String Quartet has established itself as “classical” music evangelists of the highest order. Together they present a program that includes a new Mark Adamo lyrical song-cycle that places vocal settings of four contemporary poems at the center of a surreally modern and intensely personal response to the Baroque masterpiece, Vilvaldi’s Four Seasons.

We presented Mexican tenor David Lomelí during the first Rising Stars of Opera performance, when he was still a part of the San Francisco Opera’s Adler Fellow program. The trajectory of his career has been appropriately stellar since then, with a stream of international engagements and the endorsement of the great tenor Placido Domingo. I advise you to catch him now!

Goldberg Variations on the Steinway–Moór Concert Grand Christopher Taylor stands out as an innovative musician with a diverse array of talents and interests (including a summa cum laude mathematics degree from Harvard). One of those interests was in rebuilding the only dual-manual Steinway in existence (known as the Steinway–Moór Concert Grand). Built in the late 1920s and housed at the University of Wisconsin, where Taylor is a professor of piano, the restoration was completed by Steinway in 2007 and marked the beginning of a new stage in the instrument’s life. Mondavi Center audiences will recall Taylor’s jaw-dropping Mondavi Center performances of Messiaen’s Vingt Regards in 2008; he brings his prodigious talent and the unique Steinway-Moór to perform Bach’s Goldberg Variations in their entirety. David Lomelí, tenor David Lomelí caught the opera world’s attention in 2006 when he won the top prize in Plácido Domingo’s prestigious Operalia competition—in both the opera and zarzuela categories. He was the first artist to win both. Since then, the rich-voiced young Mexican tenor has built a growing reputation in opera houses and concert halls across North America and Europe, and right here at the Mondavi Center: his 2010 debut as part of the Rising Stars of Opera was nothing short of breathtaking. With a string of prestigious debuts coming in the years ahead, we are proud to bring the former San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow and Domingo protégé back in recital. Joshua Bell, violin Sam Haywood, piano

Yo-Yo Ma, cello Kathryn Stott, piano

Joshua Bell has enchanted audiences worldwide with his breathtaking virtuosity and tone of rare beauty. Newly named Music Director of The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Bell is equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestra leader and composer who performs his own cadenzas to several of the major concerto repertoire. He returns to the Mondavi Center on the heels of two consecutive sold-out performances and will be accompanied by the critically acclaimed British pianist Sam Haywood. Saturday, November 10, 2012 8PM

Yo-Yo Ma has built his dazzling career on two bedrocks: consummate musicianship and a personal desire for artistic growth and renewal. The former trait is self-evident to anyone who has had the good fortune to hear him play. A skim through his many artistic collaborators reveals his far-flung musical imagination: Chris Thile, Emanuel Ax, Bobby McFerrin, Edgar Meyer, Mark O’Connor, the Assad Brothers and the many musicians from the Silk Road Project. We celebrate our fruitful relationship by presenting Ma in recital with accompanist Kathryn Stott who the Washington Post heralds as “every bit Ma’s equal, playing … with striking individuality.”

Glass’s quirky, unassuming and impossible not-to-like persona translate to the stage as well as through radio waves as evidenced by his 2010 sellout show at the Mondavi Center and in houses across the country. From his early experiences as a tape cutter, newscast writer and desk assistant to his current roles as editor and producer, Glass was lauded by playwright David Mamet as finding “drama and humor in the most pedestrian of places.” Saturday, May 18, 2013 8PM

L.A. Dance Project Founded by choreographer and former New York City Ballet principal dancer Benjamin Millepied, the L.A. Dance Project exists as a true “art collective.” Often praised for his stylishness and craft, Millepeid presents a premiere of a new work with a new score by Nico Muhly and visual design by noted New York painter Christopher Wool. True to its mission, the troupe will also present two pieces from the canon of modern dance: Merce Cunningham’s Winterbranch, an exploration in falling and William Forsythe’s study in hope and loss, Quintett. NEW SERIES Expanding the use of the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre has been a goal from the outset of the Mondavi Center. The Studio Dance series represents the next step for that vision, offering our loyal dance audience the chance to experience modern dance up close in this flexible, intimate space. Each evening’s performance will be preceded by a screening of selections from The Dancer Films (see pg 3). ©Jules Feiffer

Lucy Guerin

Untrained Australian Lucy Guerin founded her own company in 2001, making her brand as a dancer/choreographer one of fervent, daring movements. In Untrained, two experienced dancers and two performers with no dance training are given the same instructions. The result is “wonderful, inimitable stuff … a fascinating combination of dance, theatre, improvisation and multimedia all presented with just the right amount of quirk and irreverence” (Australian Stage). Shantala Shivalingappa

Gamaka Heralded as “divinely gifted” and “intoxicating” by The New York Times, Shantala Shivalingappa breathes life into kuchipudi, the 2,000-year-old Indian dance style. Shivalingappa, born in India and raised in Paris, captivates with the vibrant, precise storytelling embodied in her performances, and “erases cultural boundaries with her lightness, wit and musicality” (The New Yorker). Gamaka, a solo piece performed to live musical accompaniment, explores the primal power of vibrations in sound and movement: “In dance, the elements of movement, rhythm, sound, melody and poetry come together as vibrations that resonate,” says Shivalingappa, “calling each other, playing, escaping, mingling, deviating, forming patterns of great beauty and harmony.” Thursday–Saturday, April 11–13, 2013 8PM

“Clarke has found a more than worthy foil in Japanese pianist Hiromi, as dazzling a ball of energy as I’ve ever seen on stage.”—Examiner

An Acoustic Evening with Stanley Clarke and Hiromi One of the most celebrated bass players in the world, Stanley Clarke is known for ferocious chops and effortless musicality. His work as a founding member of Return to Forever and his early solo recordings are prime sources for any electric jazz bassist. Pianist Hiromi Uehara represents a new generation of musicians moving the fusion flag forward while respecting the storied jazz piano tradition, moving between sublime acoustic work and incendiary electric bands. The two first collaborated on Clarke’s acoustic trio album, Jazz in the Garden, and won a Grammy for Clarke’s 2011 electric effort The Stanley Clarke Band. They now extend that partnership with an intimate, daring set of acoustic duets. Wednesday, October 10, 2012 8PM regular

Monterey Jazz Festival on tour

55th Anniversary Celebration featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christian McBride, Ambrose Akinmusire, Chris Potter, Benny Green and Lewis Nash From day one, it was clear something special was happening at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. Founded in 1958 by San Francisco jazz radio broadcaster Jimmy Lyons, the first Monterey Jazz Festival featured artists like Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Sonny Rollins and Billie Holiday, to name just a few. Now the longest running jazz festival in the world takes to the road with a new generation of jazz luminaries. Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christian McBride, Ambrose Akinmusire, Chris Potter, Benny Green and Lewis Nash carry forward the legacy of energy, talent, joy and expression that have made Monterey a pilgrimage site for tried-and-true jazz fans for 55 years—and running.

Christian McBride’s ability to slip between styles while maintaining his distinctive sound has made him both a sought after sideman (Diana Krall, Sting) and a bandleader of uncommon accomplishment. His recent projects include touring as part of Chick Corea and John McLaughlin’s Five Peace Band and a series of duets titled Conversations with Christian. McBride brings a new trio for his return to the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre, where he first appeared 10 years ago as the first jazz artist to perform in the Mondavi Center’s inaugural season.

Julian Lage made quite a first impression at his Mondavi Center debut (with Mark O’Connor, 2010), with a jaw-dropping solo piece that dazzled the crowd. He returns fronting his own group, behind a stellar album, Gladwell, that reflects Lage’s wide-ranging musical interests and talents: chamber music, American folk and bluegrass, Latin, world, string-band tradition and modern jazz. Lage’s fluid improvisations and rich, beautifully captured tone on electric and acoustic guitars anchor the music at every step, while the contributions of his band create a compelling, cohesive musical statement. Bonnie Raitt

Mavis Staples Bonnie Raitt is the definitive American Heritage artist: a scintillating slide guitarist, expressive singer and accomplished songwriter with a deep respect for the blues, folk and singersongwriter traditions. The nine-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, who Rolling Stone pegged as one of the “100 Greatest Singers” and “100 Greatest Guitarists” of all time makes her Mondavi Center debut in the wake of a new album, Slipstream, that continues her distinctive journey through American music. With opener Mavis Staples, herself a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and member of Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Singers,” this is a season-opening double bill that will be hard to top!

Charles Bradley and his Extraordinaires

Bobby McFerrin

Tuesday, September 18, 2012 8PM

A testament to the power of perseverance, Charles Bradley is a commanding soul artist who gives new meaning to the oftused phrase “the voice of experience.” Inspired by seeing James Brown live at the Apollo in the 1960s, Bradley spent the next 48 years working day jobs from Maine to Alaska, all while stoking the flame of his unfulfilled music career. Now settled back in his hometown of Brooklyn, Bradley has received glowing reviews for his debut album No Time for Dreaming (at age 62), including a nod among Rolling Stone’s Top 50 Albums of 2011. Each note and gruff inflection is a reflection of his extended, sometimes rocky, personal path. And while his stage presence is profoundly unique, one can still see the traces of a young man, doing his best James Brown moves before the mirror.

Spirit, You All Listening to Bobby McFerrin sing may be hazardous to your preconceptions; side effects may include unparalleled joy and a sudden, irreversible urge to lead a more spontaneous existence. Ten-time Grammy Award winner Bobby McFerrin will always be the guy who sang “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” but his “greatest gift to audiences may be transforming a concert hall into a playground, a village center, a joyous space” (Los Angeles Times). What Bobby McFerrin does is not an act; it’s spontaneous invention. Bobby’s legendary solo vocal performances have dazzled audiences all over the world and sent them home singing. With his new project, Spirit, You All, Bobby pays homage to his father (the opera singer Robert McFerrin, Sr.) and the generations of Americans who sang of our shared joy and pain through the songs commonly known as the Negro Spirituals. National Theatre of Scotland

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart Pull up a chair and wet your whistle for an evening of anarchic theatre, live music and strange goings-on as the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre transforms into a rural pub. One wintry morning Prudencia Hart, an uptight academic, sets off to attend a conference in Kelso in the Scottish Borders. As the snow begins to fall, little does she know who or what awaits her there. Inspired by the Border Ballads—and delivered in a riotous romp of rhyming couplets, devilish encounters and wild karaoke—Prudencia’s dream-like journey of self-discovery unfolds among and around the audience. With a rollicking text, barn-storming live music and a “terrific, inventive sense of fun” (The Scotsman), The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart is the lock-in to end all lock-ins. All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 The Western Front, Christmas Eve, 1914. Out of the violence of the Great War’s trenches comes a silence, then a song as a young German soldier steps into no man’s land singing Stille Nacht. Thus begins an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music and peace. The extraordinary nine-man vocal ensemble Cantus and its collaborators Theatre Latté Da bring this remarkable historical event to life through new arrangements of European carols, war-songs for a capella voices and excerpts from soldiers’ diaries.

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain Renowned for its “perfectly polished professionalism, threaded through with dry wit and wry humor” (The Independent), The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is a group of all-singing, all-strumming ukulele players (the clue is in the name), which holds that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation, as long as they are played on the ukulele. With instruments small and large, in high and low registers, whether playing intricate melodies, simple tunes or complex chords, the ensemble wields the limitations of the instrument with virtuosic expertise, revealing unsuspected musical insight. With cheerful nods to the pompous and the trivial, the “Ukes” performances are at once moving and amusing, hailing the popular and the highbrow. Friday, April 12, 2013 8PM

Company Finzi Pasca

Donka: A Letter to Chekhov Donka is the latest creation of Daniele Finzi Pasca—creator of unforgettable shows with Cirque Eloize and Cirque du Soleil—who this time immerses himself in the life, writings and diaries of Russian author Anton Chekhov. With his newly formed company of international performers, Finzi Pasca gives life to a visual poem of suspended objects and bodies: decadent clowns, musicians, dancers and acrobats animate the stage, while accordions, waltzes, old romances and traditional choirs accompany a gallery of majestically costumed Chekhov characters. Cirque Mechanics

Birdhouse Factory Ageless stories spun in mid-air. Acrobats riding on mechanical wonders. All wrought from the raw material of American ingenuity (plus a little clowning around). Inspired in part by Charlie Chaplin’s film Modern Times and by the illustrations of Rube Goldberg, Cirque Mechanic’s Birdhouse Factory is brought to life by founder and director Chris Lashua. This is an American circus with incredible and inventive machines, and a story that speaks to us all. “Intelligently conceived and expertly executed, Birdhouse Factory is, in a word, excellent.” —The New York Times Sunday, February 10, 2013 3PM

By juxtaposing psychological issues with the invigorating and life-affirming language of circus arts, PSY brings out the humor, beauty, and commonality of these various neuroses, all the while celebrating the power of the individual to surmount their ailments and self-imposed restrictions, finding moments of strength, courage and joy while flying through the air. Stephen Waarts, violin

Charlie Albright, piano

Elena Urioste, violin

Like most talented young musicians, Stephen Waarts has won his fair share of awards and prizes (including a Grand Prize at the 2008 Mondavi Center Young Artists Competition). More telling, however, is the justified praise heaped on the young violinist by critics and judges, including Michael White of The Telegraph: “Not just the mechanical wonder that some of his fellow entrants were, running through a repertoire of immaculately learnt tricks, but a soul!” A former student of Itzhak Perlman and San Francisco Symphony Concertmaster Alexander Barantschik, Waarts now attends the Curtis Institute of Music.

Upon his Kennedy Center debut, the Washington Post hailed Charlie Albright as “among the most gifted musicians of his generation.” His dance card has filled up accordingly, with soloist appearances with the San Francisco Symphony and the Boston Pops as well as a special performance with Yo-Yo Ma in Messaien’s Quartet for the End of Time in a 10year anniversary remembrance of the 9/11 attacks. A Steinway Artist, Albright is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at the New England Conservatory.

Violinist Elena Urioste has been hailed for her lush tone, the nuanced lyricism of her playing and her commanding stage presence. An alumnus of the Curtis Institute of Music, she completed graduate studies at the Julliard School and has forged an impressive career including appearances on From the Top, Performance Today and acclaimed debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra (at age 13), New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic among others.

Alexander String Quartet After a lively exploration of works by Antonin Dvořák, the acclaimed Alexander String Quartet turns to Austrian Franz Schubert, one of the leading exponents of the early Romantic era in music. The Quartet, a major artistic presence in its home base of San Francisco, is a fixture in the major music capitals of four continents, securing its place among the world’s foremost ensembles. Admired for its interpretations of major classical works, the ensemble also established itself as an important advocate of new music through more than 25 commissions and numerous premiere performances.

Robert Greenberg (2PM performances only) Robert Greenberg, Ph.D. is music historian-in-residence with San Francisco Performances. A graduate of Princeton University, Greenberg holds a Ph.D. in music composition from the University of California, Berkeley and has seen his compositions—which include more than 45 works for a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles— performed all over the world.

Add-On EVENT 10th Anniversary Performance with Robert Greenberg Schubert String Quartet No. 14 in D Minor, D. 810, “Death and the Maiden” Crumb Black Angels As part of our 10-year relationship with ASQ, the Mondavi Center proudly presents this intriguing juxtaposition between the classical and the contemporary. In one afternoon, ASQ performs Schubert’s stirring masterwork Death and the Maiden followed by George Crumb’s “electric string quartet” Black Angels (which quotes from the Schubert piece). While Schubert’s work is considered to be a pillar of the chamber music canon, Crumb aims to reinvent the art form altogether. Both technically demanding works, the program looks back at established musical traditions while looking forward to explore unconventional musical landscapes. Sunday, April 14, 2013 2PM regular

focus on film Three Films $25 Vanderhoef Studio Theatre Standard Seating

Through the Eyes of Children Our film series for 2012–13 includes cinematic work from three distinct cultures and generations that represents the world, at least in large part, from the perspective of youth. They include an overlooked American masterpiece (Days of Heaven), a small English gem from the director and screenwriter of The Third Man (Fallen Idol) and the genesis of the French New Wave (The 400 Blows). The three Focus on Film screenings can be purchased together now at a discounted rate of $25. The package is considered a single CYO or add-on event; series subscription discounts and benefits do not apply. Individual tickets for films on sale August 10.

Antoine and Colette

The 400 Blows The Fallen Idol Directed by Carol Reed (1948) Not Rated,1 hour and 36 minutes Philippe (Bobby Henrey), a diplomat’s son, worships the household butler, Baines (Ralph Richardson), who’s regaled the boy with tales of his life’s adventures. So, when his hero becomes implicated in a murder, Philippe will stop at nothing to protect his idol. This despite his own suspicions about the servant’s guilt. Adapted from a story by Graham Greene, director Carol Reed’s reflection on moral ambiguity earned him an Oscar nod for Best Director. Director Reed’s tour de force is to film the story from the perspective of the eightyear-old Philippe. Monday, december 3, 2012 7PM

AntoinE and Colette Directed by François Truffaut (1962) Not Rated, 32 minutes

Days of heaven Directed by Terrence Malick (1978) Rated PG, 1 hour and 34 minutes

Antoine and Colette is the director’s follow-up to The 400 Blows. This beautifully-photographed black-and-white short film deftly depicts the giddy highs and devastating lows of first love found and lost, as experienced by Truffaut’s cinematic alter ego, Antoine.

Director Terrence Malick’s beautifully shot period piece, which won an Oscar for its cinematography, tells the story of Bill (Richard Gere), an early-1900s Chicago steel-mill worker who flees town after accidentally killing a man. In search of a better life, he moves his girlfriend Abby (Brooke Adams) and younger sister to the wheat fields of Texas. But they run into tragedy when a wealthy farmer (Sam Shepard) falls for Abby. Malick’s characteristic voiceover is from the perspective of Bill’s younger sister.

After young Antoine (Jean-Pierre Léaud) runs away, life on the streets of Paris leads to nothing but trouble and guilt in this gritty feature film debut from legendary director François Truffaut. Though he turns to petty crime to survive, Antoine’s remorse often leads him to try to return things he’s stolen—with disastrous results. The film was nominated for a Best Screenplay Oscar and the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Recorded Fall 2007, 2 hours and 54 minutes

by Richard Strauss Recorded Fall 2009, 1 hour and 53 minutes

by Giacomo Puccini Recorded Fall 2009, 3 hours and 19 minutes

Filled with ritual and symbolism, Mozart’s final masterpiece is a playful but profound look at man’s search for love and his struggle to attain wisdom and virtue. From the virtuosic arias of the Queen of the Night to the folksong-like melodies of the bird catcher Papageno, the full range of Mozart’s miraculous talent is on display in this magical fairy-tale opera.

Considered scandalous when it premiered a century ago with its provocative “Dance of the Seven Veils,” Richard Strauss’s adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s play has not lost its ability to shock. Set in Biblical times, this erotically charged opera centers on a tangled triangle: the persecuted John the Baptist, a lecherous King Herod and the monarch’s pathologically seductive stepdaughter, Salome. The New York Times says it has “all the zesty blood lust of a good vampire movie … bravely and marvelously macabre!” German soprano Nadja Michael gives a vocally and physically sensual reading of this amazing one act opera.

This evening of one-acts is what the San Francisco Chronicle calls “a lavish three-course dinner, prepared by a master and promising something for everyone’s taste.” The production features tenor David Lomelí as Rinuccio, soprano Patricia Racette, whose many San Francisco Opera triumphs include an incisive portrait of Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly, baritone Paolo Gavanelli, intelligent direction by James Robinson and sweeping lyricism by conductor Patrick Summers.

Qudus Onikeku, UC Davis Granada Artist-in-Residence Winter 2013

The UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance presents twoexciting Granada Artist-in-Residence productions each year. This program is unique in American university theater, bringing world-class directors, playwrights, choreographers and filmmakers to campus each academic quarter to teach and create a work for public performance. The Granada program has been part of the artistic life of the Department of Theatre and Dance and the larger Davis community for 30 years. Initially hosting British practitioners exclusively, it has been expanded to include distinguished artists from all parts of the globe to better reflect the rich cultural mix of students at UC Davis.

The Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to announce Qudus Onikeku, one of Africa’s pre-eminent choreographers working today, as Granada Artist-in-Residence Winter 2013.

Directors such as William Gaskill, Yvonne Brewster, Annabel Arden and others also credited with shaping 20th-century theater, have shared their aesthetic viewpoints and professional expertise. Granada artists have guided UC Davis students through the world’s theatrical repertoire in diverse projects that range from Shakespeare’s work to the contemporary realism of Miller and non-realism of Shogo Ohta.

In 2007 he directed Do We Need Coca-Cola to Dance?, an urban dance project in various African cities which gave rise to a documentary film. Other works include I Must Set Forth (2009) at the Bates Dance Festival, My Exile is in My Head (2010) at Centquatre in Paris, and STILL/Life (2011) at the Festival d’Avignon. Onikeku’s work is influenced by Nigerian dance, hip hop, acrobatics and tends to explore themes of identity and exile.

For more information: theatredance.ucdavis.edu

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, young Onikeku graduated from the National Higher School of Circus Arts in Chalons-en-Champagne, France. Often inspired by his Yoruban culture, Onikeku conducts artistic research in Africa and has toured the United States, the Caribbean and Europe with artists including Heddy Maalem, Christophe Abdul Onibasa, George Lavaudent, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Jean Claude Galotta.

“I create a movement identity that fuses dance and acrobatics, while I make my Yoruba culture my basis. I combine it with several other influences such as hip hop, capoeira, and contemporary dance vocabularies, to weave a certain understanding of the human nature and condition.”

On Campus The Mondavi Center is the only performing arts center in our region that can draw on the intellectual and creative resources of a major research university. This connection to UC Davis benefits not only the campus community, but all who attend Mondavi Center presentations.

Conductor James Conlon

ENGAGEMENT At the Mondavi Center, we believe that presenting great performances is not enough. We must also provide ways for audiences to develop a deeper relationship with the arts. We achieve greater engagement by connecting audiences with the worldrenowned artists and speakers that visit our venue and through partnerships and collaborations with other arts organizations, both on and off campus.

46

Activities such as the free PrePerformance Talks (PPT), and Question and Answer Sessions (Q&A) regularly draw on campus experts to provide enlightenment and context for our audience members. During the 2012–13 season, the Mondavi Center will once again partner with our academic colleagues to produce the week-long, multidisciplinary festival Worlds of Discovery and Loss: The Arts of Migration. Led by our faculty colleagues in the Department of Music, the Department of Theatre and Dance and the Davis Humanities Institute, Worlds of Discovery and Loss will look at the creative worlds that are generated by migration. In addition to performances by the Calder Quartet, Empyrean Ensemble, the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, Professor Bella Merlin and UCD graduate students in Performance Studies, invited artists and scholars

will share their work, explain how their experience has been affected by cultural and geographical migration and help us explore how traditions collide, intersect and flourish. The Mondavi Center is proud to participate in the UC Davis Campus Community Book Project, as part of our continuing contribution to UC Davis’s Principles of Community. Community members are encouraged to visit the Book Project website to learn more about the selected book and to take part in a variety of activities related to the shared experience of reading the book. We encourage our audiences to learn more about these important UC Davis initiatives at: Principles of Community principles.ucdavis.edu Campus Community Book Project occr.ucdavis.edu/ccbp

Artistic PARTNERSHIPS The Mondavi Center has developed partnerships with some of the great arts organizations of our day. We are pleased to be collaborating with the St. Louis Symphony, which, in addition to a full orchestra performance in Jackson Hall, will be performing at the

Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. You’ll also see them around the UC Davis campus as they perform new works commissioned from UC Davis composers. These pieces celebrate our wonderful Robert Arneson Egghead sculptures. In 2012–13, we celebrate our 10-year relationship with the San Francisco Symphony, which will appear twice on our orchestra series, plus a special all-ages holiday concert featuring live orchestral accompaniment to the beautifully animated film The Snowman. In addition to these performances, musicians from the SFS will spend time on campus working with university musicians and in the community sharing their musical knowledge with Davis High School students. For 2012–13, we are continuing our partnership with SFJAZZ, by continuing the Mondavi Center SFJAZZ High School All-Stars, an ensemble of the Sacramento region’s most talented high school musicians that we launched last season. This program provides advanced training for serious jazz students through on-going rehearsals, master classes with members of the SFJAZZ Collective and performance opportunities.

Also continuing are the Dance for Parkinson’s dance classes, offered in partnership with the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Pamela Trokanski Dance Theatre. The program offers weekly dance classes to people with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers. Classes are taught by local dance teachers who have received training in the Mark Morris Dance Group’s Dance for PD© program. First launched in Davis in 2011, we’ve recently expanded into Sacramento, thanks to support from the Kelly Foundation.

ON STAGE Pre-Performance Talks Free to all ticket holders, these half-hour talks and conversations with UC Davis faculty, local experts and guest artists provide context for our audiences—one of the most popular programs we offer. Question & Answer Sessions with the Artists After select Mondavi Center performances, artists returns to the stage to take questions from the audience, providing a unique opportunity to share artists‘s reactions and insights.
