Dear Subscriber, The launch of a new season is the meeting point of multiple timelines. On one end, there are performances in this brochure that we have anticipated bringing for three years or more: When we learned Michael Tilson Thomas would conclude his tenure with the San Francisco Symphony next season, having him return to Jackson Hall—which he and the SFS opened in 2002—became imperative. On the other end, are those events that came to light as we neared the finish line, such as when we found out, only a few weeks ago, that the iconic singer-songwriter John Prine was eager to make his Mondavi Center debut. In between those longplanned and urgently-added events are others that we booked in the year leading up to our season announcement. For example, through a combination of persistence and luck, we finally snagged the great Metropole Orchestra, the biggest and best jazz ensemble to come out of Europe. This season, as with every season, we have aimed to strike a balance between much-loved artists in return engagements and those new to our audiences, between emerging artists early in their career and established stars. As always, we think the best way to experience the Mondavi Center is to take the subscription journey, which inevitably brings you riches both expected and brand-new. Whether your tastes run to one genre, or you are an omnivorous arts consumer, we have a subscription package that will fit your budget and give you a broad picture of what’s happening today. As you explore the 19-20 season, I urge you to take a chance on something new. One of the best ways to do so is to explore the DIRECTOR’S CHOICE shows marked throughout the book. These events feature performers who are perhaps not on your radar but truly should be. Year after year, our most enthusiastic audience compliments come from shows like these that have the capacity to surprise. I look forward to welcoming you in the Mondavi Center this season.

San Francisco Symphony Michael Tilson Thomas, MUSIC DIRECTOR The San Francisco Symphony brings Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 9 to the Mondavi Center in 2020, as Michael Tilson Thomas, the longest-tenured music director at any major American orchestra, bids farewell. MTT and the San Francisco Symphony performed in Jackson Hall on the Mondavi Center’s opening night in 2002, a night in which Tilson Thomas declared Jackson Hall a “wonderful new instrument.” We celebrate his tenure with the SFS and his long association with our beloved hall on this special night. Hearing a few bars of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra were all the encouragement we needed to invite them back. For this program, violinist Daniel Hope (artistic planner at the New Century Chamber Orchestra) and company pair Vivaldi’s classic Four Seasons with German composer Max Richter’s riveting re-interpretation of the piece. Vladimir Feltsman, piano Connections, Influences and Inspirations, Part III In this third and final edition of his concert trilogy, Vladimir Feltsman shares the final act of a story he began telling at Mondavi Center in 2018. Known as one of the most versatile and commanding musicians of our time, pianist and conductor Feltsman covered works by Bach, Beethoven and Chopin in year one; and by Schumann and Brahms in year two. In this final program, titled “Inspirations,” Feltsman will perform his interpretations of works by Beethoven and Schubert. Cécile McLorin Salvant Ogresse Cécile McLorin Salvant’s Ogresse is an original song cycle on which she collaborates with arranger and conductor Darcy James Argue. This latest project from the two-time Grammy winner is a work both musical and narrative, a fairytale-like musical journey about a female ogre who falls in love with a man and, in the end, devours him. Since the release of Cécile, her 2010 debut album, Salvant has been wowing critics and audiences, including in her three Mondavi Center performances over the past four years. Merce Cunningham Centenary CNDC d’Angers/Robert Swinston Honoring what would have been Merce Cunningham’s 100th birthday, CNDC d’Angers and Artistic Director Robert Swinston bring together two of Cunningham’s landmark works, Beach Birds and BIPED, each with live musical accompaniment. Cunningham’s genius has had a defining impact on modern dance and the avant-garde. His appearance with his company at the Mondavi Center in 2008, during which they performed BIPED (a work that features massive projections) was a landmark moment for modern dance in the Sacramento region. Swinston was a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company for more than 30 years, and served as Cunningham’s assistant beginning in 1992. With CNDC d’Angers, Swinston brings his very personal interpretation of Cunningham’s legacy to this production. SAT, NOV

John Prine Two-time Grammy award–winner and American treasure John Prine makes his long-overdue debut on the Mondavi Center stage. Since his eponymously titled first album in 1971, Prine has continued to write and perform songs that have become central to our American musical heritage. Classics like “Angel from Montgomery,” “Sam Stone,” “Paradise” and “Hello in There” speak to the everyday experience of ordinary people with a simple honesty and an extraordinary ability to get right through to the heart of the listener. An Acoustic Evening with Mary Chapin Carpenter & Shawn Colvin Singers, songwriters and folk legends Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin share a rare duo performance of treasured hits and an exploration of the songwriter’s craft. With songs like “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” Chapin Carpenter has won five Grammy awards (with 15 nominations) and is one of only 15 female members of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Musica Nuda Comprised of just two musicians from Italy, Petra Magoni (voice) and Ferruccio Spinetti (double bass), Musica Nuda is a prime example of an ensemble whose value is greater than the sum of its parts. They use a bit of jazz, a bit of songwriting, and elements of rock, punk and classical music to underline the value of a lyric and explore the meaning of every song whether dramatic, funny, sarcastic or romantic. Dreamers’ Circus Described as ethereal Nordic folk music, Dreamers’ Circus is comprised of three close friends and members of the Danish String Quartet whose bond informs their powerfully connective music. Using traditional instruments (piano, accordion, violin and cittern), Dreamers’ Circus evokes reminiscence while remaining present and relevant. Bonnie and Clyde Directed by Arthur Penn (1967), Rated R, 111 minutes Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway), a bored waitress, falls in love with an ex-con named Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) and together they start a violent crime spree through the country, stealing cars and robbing banks. Bonnie and Clyde is considered a landmark film, and is regarded as one of the first films of the New Hollywood era, since it broke many cinematic taboos and was popular with the younger generation. Its success prompted other filmmakers to be more open in presenting sex and violence in their films. The film’s ending also became iconic as “one of the bloodiest death scenes in cinematic history” (The New York Times). SUN, NOV

Badlands Directed by Terrence Malick (1973), Rated PG, 94 minutes An impressionable teenage girl (Sissy Spacek) from a dead-end town and her older greaser boyfriend (Martin Sheen) embark on a killing spree in the South Dakota badlands. Loosely based on a true story, Badlands is often cited by film critics as one of the greatest and most influential films of all time. The film was also notable for its lyrical photography, and its music, which includes pieces by Carl Orff. In 1993, the film was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” SUN, JAN

Hell or High Water Directed by David Mackenzie (2016), Rated R, 102 minutes This neo-Western crime thriller follows a divorced father and his older ex-con brother (Chris Pine and Ben Foster) who carry out a series of bank robberies to save their family ranch, while being pursued by two Texas Rangers (Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham). Cookbook Author & Host of Netflix Series Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat

Sometimes, a little distance is all you need to see things in a brand-new way. For astronaut Terry Virts, his newfound perspective was from the International Space Station (ISS), where he installed the Cupola module, granting an unprecedented 360-degree view from the station. When he later became the commander of the ISS, he made good use of the Cupola, taking more photographs than any astronaut who came before him. Many of those images were later used in the National Geographic book View From Above and IMAX film A Beautiful Planet, but to hear Virts tell it, no photo can capture the perfect shade of blue from a sunrise viewed from outer space.

As an undergraduate studying English at UC Berkeley, Samin Nosrat took a detour into the kitchen at Chez Panisse restaurant that happily determined the course of her life and career. Since 2000, she has pursued her twin passions of food and words with equal vigor, aiming to create work that inspires, creates community, and raises cultural, social and environmental awareness. Her New York Times bestselling book, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat: Mastering the Elements of Good Cooking won the 2018 James Beard General Cookbook of the Year, among other notable awards. A documentary series based on the book is now streaming on Netflix.

Dmitri Shostakovich The musical career of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975) mirrored exactly the rise and history of the Soviet Union from 1917 to 1975. He entered the Petrograd Conservatory at the very end of the Tsarist era; he witnessed the Revolution and began his career during Lenin’s rule; he was nearly purged twice by Stalin; he flourished under Khrushchev and died while Brezhnev was in power. Shostakovich was a survivor and a great composer, and his fear and self-loathing, his courage and experience found their way into his music. As such, Shostakovich is not just the most important composer of string quartets and symphonies from the 1920s to the 1970s; even more, he and his music stand as witnesses to the rise and failures of the Soviet Union, one of the defining events of the 20th century.
