Guitar Gods
As you’ll see in this brochure, the ninth season of the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, UC Davis truly offers something for everyone. From classical greats to distinguished speakers, jazz to dance—with engaging detours into Weimar cabaret (Max Raabe, pg. 30), genre-crossing virtuosity (Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain & Edgar Meyer, pg. 30), and artful rock (Stew and the Negro Problem, pg. 8)—the 10–11 season presents the kaleidoscopic array of unparalleled artistry you have come to expect from the Mondavi Center.
Love the sound of the six string? Then don’t miss this trio of shows featuring four of America’s finest guitarists (with a visionary violinist thrown in for good measure): Mark O’Connor and Julian Lage (pg.17)
If that is not enough, we have added another legendary musician to our roster of Just Added artists, blues great Buddy Guy, who will perform on Friday, April 22. Great art deserves a great audience, and we are thankful for your ongoing support. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2010–2011. Sincerely,

Buddy Guy’s list of accomplishments is as profound as his signature guitar sound: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a chief influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to that city’s halcyon days of electric blues.
“Mr. Guy, the 73-year-old blues guitarist no one should challenge ...[showed] how to make [notes] signify pain, suspense, pride and rage rather than technical skill.”—The New York Times

Norton gives an emotionally riveting performance as Monty Brogan, a drug dealer living through his last hours of freedom before a seven-year jail term. In his final 10 days, Adolf Hitler raged against his powerlessness to stop the fall of Berlin, and with it, World War II and the Third Reich. An intense, award-winning performance by Bruno Ganz as Hitler is the centerpiece of the film, which is based on numerous books, most notably the first-hand account of Traudl Junge, one of Hitler’s secretaries.

Lucinda Childs began her career as choreographer and performer in 1963 as an original member of the Judson Dance Theater in New York. After forming her own dance company in 1973, Childs embarked on a number of notable collaborations with major composers, the first of which was DANCE (1979), with music by Philip Glass and film and decor by visual artist Sol LeWitt. DANCE was revived in 2009, and this tour provides a rare chance to experience a true artistic masterwork.
