Don Roth, Ph.D. Executive Director
From the Director I am proud to share with you the artists and speakers who comprise the
Ninth Season of the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, UC Davis. The season is both classic and contemporary. It is filled with well-established stars and artists just coming on the horizon, bringing the best from the U.S. and the entire globe. We’ll move seamlessly from classical and baroque, to bluegrass and jazz and almost all points in between. To paraphrase Duke Ellington, we promise to deliver only
music, not the other kind.
I remain very careful about applying the term
good
virtuoso, but I encourage
you to take a quick look at some of the talent we’ve assembled for this season and reach your own conclusions: •
Two genre-crossing super trios that speak for themselves:
Zakir Hussain, Béla Fleck, and Edgar Meyer
Mark O’Connor, John Patitucci, and Julian Lage
•
Pianist Yefim Bronfman, who Esa-Pekka Salonen says “can play better
than most other people on the planet”
•
Jazz guitar gods Bill Frisell and John Scofield
•
Violinist Robert McDuffie, the inspiration for Philip Glass’s new
American Four Seasons
Each musician above is a
true master of his instrument—
and that’s only a short list of the many Mondavi Center artists that could easily make the cut. With 63 productions and
93 total performances,
there is much more on the schedule than I can possibly capture here. I do hope you will decide to take a journey of discovery and enjoyment with us.

2010- 2011 Director’s Choice Each season it is my pleasure to put together a Director’s Choice series. For 2010–2011, I’m pleased to present an eclectic mix of performers that range from Weimar cabaret to Art Rock. Some of these performers may be unknown to you, but I believe they are among the most interesting artists working today. Author and star of his autobiographical rock happening Passing Strange, Stew is about as smart as rock gets these days. Hearing him in the intimate Vanderhoef Studio Theatre will be a real treat. Speaking of smart rock, Kronos Quartet returns to the Mondavi Center with an amazing program that features Icelandic rock group Sigur Rós’s beautiful and atmospheric instrumental rock music. My final Director’s Choice is the droll and fantastic Max Raabe and Palast Orchester. Like the Trockadero ballet company we presented in 2010, Raabe’s Weimar Republic cabaret performances combine absolute virtuosity (yes, there’s that word again) with the ability to make you laugh as well, with the occasional Britney Spears cover. I hope you join me for Director’s Choice— performances that I believe will be well enjoyed and long remembered.

There is spice all along the Silk Road and in every one of our Jackson Hall and Vanderhoef Studio Theatre Crossings programs. Some of the most interesting music today freely crosses cultural and genre boundaries. Our global society produces extraordinary cross-cultural programs like Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road ensemble or the partnership of Zakir Hussain, Béla Fleck, and Edgar Meyer. Studio Classics: Crossings finds classical musicians like Christopher O’Riley, Simone Dinnerstein, and Lara Downes interpreting music that originated with rock bands like Radiohead and Nirvana.

The Washington Post has pronounced Seattle native Mark Morris as America’s “Mozart of modern dance.” Animating his profound and sophisticated love of music through movement, Morris has changed the way audiences experience modern dance. His longtime use of live musicians whenever possible is emblematic of his commitment to a perfect blend of sound and movement, all happening in the moment. This performance features two pieces which debuted at Lincoln Center in 2009, Visitation and Empire Garden, along with 1988’s Grand Duo.

Lucinda Childs began her career as choreographer and performer in 1963 as an original member of the Judson Dance Theater in New York. After forming her own dance company in 1973, Childs embarked on a number of notable collaborations with major composers, the first of which was DANCE (1979), with music by Philip Glass and film and decor by visual artist Sol LeWitt. DANCE was revived in 2009, and this tour provides a rare chance to experience a true artistic masterwork.

Film
This season, Focus on Film features three brilliant films that tell intimate stories about men at the most crucial times of their lives. All three films are also related to each other in their use of music that transcends the “soundtrack” tag; instead, the work of Terence Blanchard, Marin Marais, Sainte Colombe, and Stephan Zacharias takes a central role in the aesthetic experience. In addition, don’t miss the two free screenings that tie in with the Director’s Choice series (page 4): Passing Strange and Heima.

Munich 1917. A hotel room. A jar of poison. A failed suicide. A lone actress. Tilly No-Body follows the tumbling thoughts of Tilly Wedekind, wife and muse of celebrated German playwright Frank Wedekind (Spring Awakening & Lulu). Weaving together biography, personal letters, drama, and original songs, Bella Merlin (actor and Professor of Acting, UC Davis) traces the Wedekinds’ passionate marriage, leading to Tilly’s attempted suicide and Frank’s premature death.

Campus Engagement PARTNERSHIPS
The Mondavi Center is the only performing arts center in our region that can draw on the intellectual and creative resources of a major research university. This connection to UC Davis benefits not only the campus community, but all who attend the Mondavi Center by providing occasions where campus artists and experts help us better understand the arts and speakers the Mondavi Center presents.
The Mondavi Center has developed partnerships with some of the great arts organizations of our day. Our relationship with the Curtis Institute of Music, arguably the finest music school in the land, enters its third year with “Curtis On Tour” bringing amazing young musicians to perform in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre.
Community
CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT
Activities such as the free series of panel discussions in the Forum@MC series, Pre-Performance Talks (PPT), and PostPerformance Question and Answer sessions (Q&A) regularly draw on campus experts to provide enlightenment and context for our audience members. The Madness and Music Festival this October (see page 32), is a co-presentation with the UC Davis Department of Music. The festival celebrates the 200th anniversary of Robert Schumann’s birth, and involves an exciting mix of our extraordinary faculty, touring artists, and the development of new work by selected festival composition fellows. The festival is our most extensive and ambitious collaboration ever with another UC Davis department, and a model for things to come. The Mondavi Center is once again proud to participate in the UC Davis Campus Community Book Project, as part of our continuing contribution to UC Davis’s Principles of Community. Community members are encouraged to read Beverly Daniel Tatum’s Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria, and to take part in a variety of activities related to the shared experience of reading the book. We encourage our audiences to learn more about these important UC Davis initiatives at:
In 2010-11 we begin a new phase of our long-time connection with the San Francisco Symphony, which will appear twice on our orchestra series, the second time with its wonderful chorus in the Bach B Minor Mass. We expect each of these appearances to develop into a mini-residency in Davis, with musicians from the SFS mentoring local and university musicians during their stay. Having one of the greatest orchestras in the world as a neighbor and a partner is a musical blessing, as is our similar relationship with the amazing San Francisco Opera. This year that partnership blossoms with an HD screening of SFO’s wonderful production of La Rondine, by Puccini, featuring Angela Gheorghiu. In addition, two outstanding young singers, David Lomeli and Karen Slack, current and former SFO Adler Fellows, join the UC Davis Symphony under Christian Baldini in a special concert that honors Barbara K. Jackson’s commitment to young artists (Barbara is also sponsoring this concert, enabling us to offer it free to the community).
Principles of Community principles.ucdavis.edu Campus Community Book Project occr.ucdavis.edu/ccbp We believe that by developing these deeper relationships with artists, arts organizations, and our campus community, our programming is enriched and our audiences are the beneficiaries.
