mondavi center – o 12 1 1 2

I am proud to introduce the Mondavi Center’s 10th season , which my programming colleague, Associate Executive Director Jeremy Ganter, and I have handpicked for your enjoyment. Our goal is to give you what we hope will be a very pleasant challenge—choosing from among the amazing musicians, dancers, speakers and thinkers you will find described in this brochure. We believe we have created an abundance of riches for you to experience. That richness is one reason we arrange our presentations in a number of series. Our series bring focus to the themes and trends that we find most compelling. When you select a series you will experience new artists alongside legendary masters, the familiar with the unexpected. The Mondavi Center is one of the few performing arts centers where the number of series ticket holders has been steadily increasing, because so many patrons have come to love taking these series journeys with us.

from the di

rector

Don Roth, Ph.D. Executive Director

We are particularly proud to present the U.S. premiere of Blanche Neige, the remarkable Snow White story ballet from France’s acclaimed Ballet Preljocaj. This is the most important premiere ever presented at the Mondavi Center, a sign of how much our international recognition has grown in our first ten years. You can read more about this landmark event—and the accompanying gala— in the following pages. What else to look for in our tenth season? • In-depth explorations of some of the greatest composers of all time: Liszt, Mozart, Bach, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and more; • Stunning Mondavi Center debuts of world-class artists, including the first ever appearance of my hometown orchestra, the New York Philharmonic with Music Director Alan Gilbert; • Viewing remarkable cultures through music, dance and film, including a trip to post-Katrina New Orleans and a special Focus on India, developed with UC Davis faculty; • More chances than ever to see artists in our very own “night club,” the Vanderhoef Studio Theater. Of course, one of the most compelling reasons to subscribe, either to a Series or a Choose-Your-Own package, is the significant savings it represents. You will find more information on how to become a subscriber later in the book. I hope to welcome you back to the Mondavi Center soon. Best,

Don Roth Executive Director Mondavi Center

The fern-like forms you see throughout the 11-12 Subscription Brochure come from sandstone found throughout the Mondavi Center. Called dendrites—from the Greek word dendrites, meaning “of a tree”— these shapes record the passage of fluids through the sandstone rocks, which were quarried in India. Deposited in a shallow seaway more than 1.8 billion years ago, these rocks are more than 1.4 billion years older than the first ferns. Mondavi Gala

Saturday, March 17, 2012 Wine, food and the performing arts intersect in a remarkable Gala Event celebrating an inimitable California couple, Robert and Margrit Mondavi. The Mondavis’ visionary generosity laid the foundation for two prominent UC Davis institutions: the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science and the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. Proceeds from this inaugural Gala will help ensure the Mondavi vision is carried forward as the Mondavi Center and the Robert Mondavi Institute expand their impact in the Sacramento region, California and around the world. The Gala will also serve as the kick-off event for the Mondavi Center’s 10th Anniversary.

Ballet Preljocaj: Blanche Neige In 2008, one of France’s leading choreographers, Angelin Preljocaj, presented his first full-length story ballet Blanche Neige (Snow White). Now, in 2012, the Mondavi Center presents the United States debut of this amazing contemporary ballet. Based on Grimm’s fairy tale, Blanche Neige is set to music by Gustav Mahler, with costumes by Jean-Paul Gaultier and set design by Thierry Leproust. Le Journal du Dimanche called the work “a great popular ballet such as we have not seen since Béjart.” Blanche Neige is a grown-up retelling of Grimm’s fairy tale. Due to brief nudity and mature themes, it is not appropriate for young children. Saturday, March 17, 2012 7PM JH Sunday, March 18, 2012 3PM JH regular

Eric Owens

Ballet Preljocaj

Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca Hailed by critics for its transcendent and deeply emotional performances, Noche Flamenca is recognized as the most authentic flamenco company in the field today. Artistic Director Martin Santangelo and his wife Soledad Barrio successfully bring to the stage the essence, purity and integrity of one of the world’s most complex and mysterious art forms. All aspects of flamenco— dance, song and music—are interrelated and given equal weight in the presentations of Noche Flamenca, creating a true communal spirit—the very heart and soul of flamenco. Director’s Choice One of my most enjoyable tasks each season, is to decide which three selections will become Director’s Choice. This is particularly challenging, because all our presentations are a director’s choice, which Associate Executive Director Jeremy Ganter and I have selected personally for you. But sometimes I have had an artistic experience so special and intense, that I want to make sure our audience members take special notice. In a small Greenwich Village theater, I saw Noche Flamenca, featuring one of the world’s greatest flamenco dancers, Soledad Barrio. For almost two hours, three dancers, two guitarists and three “conte hondo” singers held me spellbound, as music and dancing intertwined on an almost bare stage. Not to be missed. In a very different New York venue, I heard the beginning of the Met Opera’s new Ring Cycle, a star-studded affair. But the real star was the very distinguished, but less well known bassbaritone Eric Owens—when I heard he was available to sing on our stage, I jumped as high as a Wagnerian giant. And Director’s Choice could not be complete without the longawaited U.S. Premiere of the greatest full-length dance piece of our time, Ballet Preljocaj’s Blanche Neige, about which you can read more on page 3. We have been working to bring this version of the Snow White story to the U.S. and to the Mondavi Center since I first saw it on a grainy DVD in 2009. Music by Mahler, costumes by Gaultier and gorgeous choreography by Angelin Preljocaj—a great evening of theater. This year’s Director’s Choice journey is perhaps our most special ever with variety, vibrancy and, should you choose to subscribe, great value—all things the Mondavi Center has built its reputation on. —Don Roth

When The Corrections was published in the fall of 2001, Jonathan Franzen was probably better known for a 1996 Harper’s essay in which he lamented the declining cultural authority of the American novel, than for the two novels he had already published. The Corrections changed all that, becoming an enormous international bestseller and National Book Award winner, with translations in 35 languages, and American hardcover sales of nearly one million copies. His most recent novel, Freedom, was chosen as one of The New York Times 10 Best Books of 2010 and was also a finalist in the fiction category for the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award. Since then, Smith has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, named a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture and won the 2010 National Book Award for her memoir Just Kids, which brilliantly captures her lifelong friendship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. If God Is Willing and da Creek Don’t Rise If God Is Willing and da Creek Don’t Rise continues the story of the rebirth of the Big Easy, begun in Lee’s epic, Emmy and Peabody Award-winning 2006 documentary When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. Alongside the city’s storied ability to celebrate life with unmatchable ebullience, Lee documents the successes and failures in the ongoing efforts to restore housing, healthcare, education, economic growth and law and order to a battered but unbowed community. Because of its length, If God Is Willing... will be screened in two parts on successive nights. Hot 8 Brass Band The Hot 8 Brass Band has epitomized New Orleans street music for over a decade. The band plays the traditional Second Line parades, infusing their performances with the funk and energy that makes New Orleans music loved around the world. The members of the Hot 8 Brass Band were born and raised in New Orleans and many began playing together in high school. What makes the Hot 8 players so special are the sounds they coax from their well-loved, well-worn horns. Wednesday–Friday, November 9–11, 2011 8PM VST

Bennett may, in fact, be her biggest fan; he declared to the press what so many fans—including those who witnessed her 2009 sold-out Mondavi Center performance—have come to believe over the last two and a half decades: “She’s the best singer of her generation.” Thursday, October 20, 2011 8PM JH regular

Ricky Skaggs has often said that he is “just trying to make a living” playing the music he loves. From his debut at the Grand Ole Opry at the age of seven, to his garnering 14 Grammy Awards through his storied career, it is obvious that Skaggs has nicely hurdled that modest ambition. His profound passion for American music has made Skaggs a household name, both for his virtuosity on the mandolin and his championing of new artists on his record label, Skaggs Family Records. Backed by the all-star musicians in Kentucky Thunder, Skaggs continues to celebrate a life filled with music at every show.

Elvis Weinstein (Tom Servo, Dr. Erhardt), Frank Conniff (TV’s Frank), and Maru Jo Pehl (Pearl Forrester). Cinematic Titanic

Returning after a rapturous sell-out 2010 appearance, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo remains one of the most popular dance troupes in the United States. The company of professional male dancers performs the full range of the ballet and modern dance repertoire, achieving high comedy by incorporating and exaggerating the foibles, accidents and underlying incongruities of serious dance. The fact that men dance all the parts—heavy bodies delicately balancing on toes as swans, sylphs, water sprites, romantic princesses or angst-ridden Victorian ladies—enhances, rather than mocks, the spirit of dance as an art form, delighting and amusing novices and aficionados alike. Zippo Songs: Poems from the Front with Theo Bleckmann

A new project from Mondavi Center resident artist Lara Downes, 13 Ways is a set of new variations on Bach’s magnificent opening theme of the Goldbergs (“Aria”), written by a group of today’s most renowned composers, including 2010 Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon. These brilliant composers, who also include Fred Hersch and William Bolcom, re-imagine the Aria in a variety of ways, celebrating both the eternal beauty of Bach’s music, and the musical evolutions of the past 250 years.

Composer and guitarist Phil Kline’s Zippo Songs (2003) sets to music texts that American GIs engraved on their Zippo lighters in Vietnam. The songs follow like a harrowing series of haiku, expressing the gamut of emotions young men feel under the threat of imminent oblivion. Alex Ross of The New Yorker calls it “one of the most brutally frank song cycles ever penned,” and Anne Midgett of The New York Times says “Phil Kline has fashioned brilliant American lieder for the 21st century. Tinged with elements of the psychedelic 60’s, they communicate with a direct vernacular eloquence.” Contains graphic language; recommended for mature audiences.

The Elixir of Love

Lucia di Lammermoor

by Giacomo Puccini Recorded Summer 2009, 125 minutes

by Gaetano Donizetti Recorded Fall 2008, 158 minutes

by Gaetano Donizetti Recorded Summer 2008, 124 minutes

An idealistic artist, a celebrated singer and a corrupt police chief engage in a fierce battle of wills in this tempestuous tale of cruelty and deception. With its themes of political intrigue, sexual intimidation and official hypocrisy, Puccini’s great melodrama set in 1800 is anything but dated. Canadian soprano Adrianne Pieczonka makes her company debut in the title role. Baritone Lado Ataneli (Scarpia) and Italian tenor Carlo Ventre make up the other sides of this fatal love triangle.

Donizetti’s charming comedy is a celebration of innocence, so what setting could be better than a small Italian-American community in the Napa Valley, circa 1915? In this ingenious update, the naïve Nemorino believes that a love potion will win him Adina’s heart. Blossoming from a shy Italian immigrant to a plucky entrepreneur, he captures both his sweetheart and the American dream over the course of this delightful opera buffa. Tenor Ramón Vargas superbly embodies the role of the lovesick Nemorino. The beautiful but aloof Adina is sung by soprano Inva Mula.

The emotionally fragile Lucia is driven to madness when manipulated to marry a man she does not love. Featuring the most famous mad scene in the repertory and full of ravishingly beautiful melodies, this timeless bel canto masterpiece evokes the passion and desperation of a woman used by her brother as a political pawn. Superstar Natalie Dessay owns this virtuosic role. Also starring Giuseppe Filianoti, Gabriele Viviani and Oren Gradus.

The UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance presents three exciting Granada Artist-in-Residence productions each year. This program is unique in American university theatre, bringing world-class directors, playwrights, choreographers and filmmakers to campus each academic quarter to teach and create a work for public performance.

Directors such as William Gaskill, Yvonne Brewster, Annabel Arden and others also credited with shaping 20th-century theatre, have shared their aesthetic viewpoints and professional expertise. Granada artists have guided UC Davis students through the world's theatrical repertoire in diverse projects that range from Shakespeare's work to the contemporary realism of Miller and non-realism of Shogo Ohta.

The UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to announce Michael Barakiva as fall 2011 Granada Artist-in-Residence.

atre and dan

The Granada program has been part of the artistic life of the Department of Theatre and Dance and the larger Davis community for 30 years. Initially hosting British practitioners exclusively, it has been expanded to include distinguished artists from all parts of the globe to better reflect the rich cultural mix of students at UC Davis.

Engagement

ARTISTIC PARTNERSHIPS

At the Mondavi Center, we believe that presenting great work is not enough; we also must provide ways for audiences to develop a deeper, more engaged relationship with the arts. We aim to accomplish this by connecting audiences with the world-renowned artists and speakers that visit our venue, and through partnerships and collaborations with other arts organizations, both on and off campus.

The Mondavi Center has developed partnerships with some of the great arts organizations of our day. Our relationship with the Curtis Institute of Music, arguably the finest music school in the land, enters its third year with Curtis on Tour bringing amazing young musicians to perform in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre, and to share their experiences with fellow student musicians throughout the region.

ON CAMPUS The Mondavi Center is the only performing arts center in our region that can draw on the intellectual and creative resources of a major research university. This connection to UC Davis benefits not only the campus community, but all Mondavi Center attendees, by providing occasions where campus artists and experts help us better engage with the arts and speakers the Mondavi Center presents. Activities such as free Pre-Performance Talks (PPT), and Post-Performance Question and Answer sessions (Q&A) regularly draw on campus experts to provide enlightenment and context for our audience members. In 2011-12, faculty from UC Davis’ Middle East/South Asia Studies Program, including program Director Dr. Sudipta Sen, have collaborated with the Mondavi Center to create the film festival and photo exhibit Growing Up in India, part of a season-long Focus on India. The Mondavi Center also is proud to participate in the UC Davis Campus Community Book Project, as part of our continuing contribution to UC Davis’s Principles of Community. This year community members will be reading Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, and taking part in a variety of activities related to the shared experience of reading the book. We encourage our audiences to learn more about these important UC Davis initiatives at: Principles of Community principles.ucdavis.edu

In 2011–12, we expand our long-time association with the San Francisco Symphony (SFS), which will appear twice in our Western Health Advantage Orchestra Series, and once in our Concert Series as the SFS Chamber Ensemble. Each of these appearances will develop into a mini-residency in Davis and elsewhere, with musicians from the SFS mentoring local and university musicians during their stay. This season we also expand our relationship with the worldrenowned San Francisco Opera (SFO). In 2011-12 it is our pleasure to present Focus on Opera, three HD screenings of the SFO’s acclaimed productions of Puccini’s Tosca, and Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love (with Ramon Vargas) and Lucia Di Lammermoor (with Natalie Dessay). And, in what has fast become a popular Mondavi Center tradition, current SFO Adler Fellows join the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra under Christian Baldini in a special concert that honors Barbara K. Jackson’s commitment to young artists. (Barbara is also sponsoring this concert, which allows us to offer it free to the community.) We also begin a new partnership with SFJAZZ, whose members will mentor a student ensemble, assembled from high school students in our region, culminating in a live performance in Jackson Hall, with the student ensemble opening for the SFJAZZ Collective. ON STAGE Pre-Performance Talks Free to all ticket holders, these half-hour talks and conversations with UC Davis faculty, local arts experts and guest artists provide context for our audiences—one of the most popular programs we offer. Post-Performance Q&A with the Artists After select Mondavi Center performances, artists return to the stage to take questions from the audience, providing a unique opportunity to share artists’ reactions and insights.

Artists appearing at the Mondavi Center conduct master classes and workshops for performing arts magnet schools and other institutions, offering advanced classroom opportunities for aspiring dancers, musicians and theater artists. Both the San Francisco Symphony and SFJAZZ regularly provide master classes and sectionals to young classical and jazz musicians. Every artist on the Mondavi Center Debut series spends 2-3 days providing residencies in local schools. In recent seasons, great musicians like Delfeayo Marsalis, Leon Fleisher and Vladimir Feltsman have offered free master classes to area musicians. The annual Young Artists Competition is our most important regional activity, which recognizes and rewards our top young talent.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT programs for teachers Kennedy Center Partners in Education The Mondavi Center has partnered with the Twin Rivers Unified School District and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., to provide in-depth professional development workshops. These are led by artists trained by the Kennedy Center to help teachers learn how to integrate the arts into their classrooms. Globe Education Academy for Teachers In partnership with Los Rios Community College District, the School of Education, UC Davis and Shakespeare’s Globe in London, the Mondavi Center offers a unique professional development opportunity each year for 12 drama and English teachers (grades 7–12) to immerse themselves in the world of William Shakespeare, both in London and at UC Davis. At the heart of the Academy experience is a two-week intensive residency at Shakespeare’s Globe in London in July 2011, during which the teachers will work with Globe Education theater practitioners. Teachers complete the program with a festival day of theater and celebration with their students at the Mondavi Center in November 2011.
