In putting together the 2017–18 season, which marks 15 years since our opening, we have been inspired and enlivened by you, our audience. Enlivened by your spirited applause, your thought-provoking questions and your passion for both the familiar and the obscure: These are the things that push us to find artists who can amaze and inspire. Our home, here on the UC Davis campus, in the midst of a great research and teaching enterprise, is a vital element of our identity. A spirit of discovery surrounds us, and we embrace the challenge to be active participants in that vitality. As you turn the pages of this brochure, you will dive into current and classic arts from the four corners of the earth, as well as into the artistic traditions of this nation from Louisiana to Appalachia—and from both coasts. You will meet artists and ensembles you know well (the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Chick Corea and Garrison Keillor) and others who may become your new artistic muses (Dorrance Dance, Pedrito Martinez and Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Ségal). This combination of the classic and contemporary, of the established and the emerging, has become a hallmark of each Mondavi Center season. You will find my Director’s Choice shows throughout the book, marked with . These are performers that are, perhaps, not on your radar but truly should be. Year after year, our most enthusiastic audience compliments come from shows like these, that have the capacity to surprise. As always, we encourage you to take the subscription journey, which inevitably brings you riches both expected and surprising. The Alexander String Quartet is a major artistic presence in its home base of San Francisco, but is equally beloved in its second home: the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre. The group returns for its 16th consecutive Mondavi Center season.

Brahms and the Schumanns A Triangle for the Ages! Theirs was one of the great love triangles, one that has been memorialized in music, novels and even in a movie. At the time Johannes Brahms met Clara Schumann (née Wieck) and Robert Schumann in October of 1853, he was 20 years old; Clara was 34 and Robert 43 years old. In different ways and for different reasons, these three great musicians fell in love with each other, a love that was complicated beyond measure by the madness that would overtake Robert just four months after they met—and take his life 29 months later. This series will observe this extraordinary love triangle through the lens of their equally extraordinary chamber music. —Robert Greenberg, Ph.D.

Robert Greenberg (2PM performances only) Robert Greenberg is music historian-in-residence with San Francisco Performances. A graduate of Princeton University, Greenberg holds a Ph.D. in music composition from the University of California, Berkeley and has seen his compositions—which include more than 45 works for a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles—performed all over the world.

Kudiyattam Sanskrit Theater Kudiyattam is the last living representative of the classical, 2000-yearold form of Sanskrit drama. Performances usually last for nights, but this condensed performance hosts two self-contained episodes: the demon Ravana’s attack on the moon; and a sequence from Kalidasa’s Sakuntala. Virtuoso drumming with texts screened in subtitles as well as sung and enacted through hand gestures and eye expressions are a defining aspect of the performance. This is a rare chance to behold one of India’s oldest living theatrical traditions.

Devendra Sharma and Company Sultana Daku One of the most popular performance genres of Northern India, Nautanki’s rich musical compositions, fine poetry and humorous, entertaining storylines hold a strong influence over North Indian people’s imaginations. Sultana Daku depicts the exploits of Sultana, a notorious thief from early 20th-century India who lived in the jungles of Uttar Pradesh with his gang of 300 robbers and his lover, Phulkanwar. This Nautanki is a humorous tale of the cat and mouse chase between Sultana and the British superintendent of police, Freddie Young. Devendra Sharma brings this century-old, extremely popular Nautanki classic to life for a contemporary audience.

inDANCE One of Canada’s most progressive dance companies, inDANCE presents two traditional programs that integrate decades of original courtesan dance research, complex choreography, live music and stunning visual and lighting design. The show begins with The Book of Sandalwood, which draws on South Asian poetry, followed by Purnima/FullMoon, which transports South Indian court dance into a spectacular world of dynamic music, film and light. Danú and Goitse St. Patrick’s Day Celebration The Mondavi Center’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration brings two of Ireland’s biggest bands together: Danú, hailing from the south’s historic County Waterford; and Goitse, forged in the white-hot creative crucible of Limerick’s Irish World Academy. Both groups are famous for their high-energy performances in Ireland and around the world. For this concert, they share a double bill mixing traditional Irish music with original compositions. Curtis on Tour: Curtis Chamber Ensemble David Shifrin, CLARINET One of three events celebrating the 2018 Leonard Bernstein Centennial, the Curtis Institute of Music features a special program saluting Bernstein, certainly one of its most successful former students. Young Artists Competition

The national Mondavi Center Young Artists Competition (YAC), now in its 14th year, supports young artists in the early stages of their careers, providing scholarships to further their musical studies as well as valuable performance opportunities to encourage their artistic growth. This year, the competition features the Founders Prize in Vocals to U.S. residents ages 18â&#x20AC;&#x201C;22, and the Young Artists Prize to Californiaresident pianists and instrumentalists ages 12â&#x20AC;&#x201C;17. IMAGO Theatre La Belle, Lost in the World of the Automaton IMAGO Theatre has imagined a new fairytale experience that mixes Beauty and the Beast, steampunk aesthetics and automata all on one stage. Set to the backdrop of a whimsical ship, La Belle tells the love story of the crew’s coal stoker and a woman passenger, who, after seeking refuge from a storm, finds herself in an engine room full of mechanized figures brought to life by the stoker himself. Los Tigres Del Norte With roots planted down the road in San Jose, California, Los Tigres Del Norte has grown into one of the most famous Norteño bands in the world. Their corridos (ballads) tell cinematic tales of life, love and the struggle to survive along the Mexico-United States border, featuring a style of accordion playing originating from the Texas borderlands. With six Grammys, six Latin Grammys and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Los Tigres has solidified itself as one of the most influential Spanish-language bands of all time.

The Cristina Pato Quartet Galician gaita master Cristina Pato arrives with bagpipe in hand and quartet in tow. This compelling program explores the cultural voyage of rhythmic patterns originating in the Latin music of Europe before migrating on to South America. An active member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, Pato became the first female gaita player to release a solo album— and has since collaborated with such artists as Arturo O’Farrill and Paquito D’Rivera in addition to dancers Damian Woetzel and Lil’ Buck.

The Gloaming

The Gloaming is a sum much greater than its already impressive parts. Virtuosic fiddlers Martin Hayes and Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh, Dennis Cahill on guitar, Iarla Ó Lionáird on vocals and Thomas Bartlett on piano create a rare combination of traditional Irish melodies, jazz, contemporary classical and improvisational flourishes. The soaring, “old style” sean-nós singing from Ó Lionáird is a special treat rarely heard outside of Ireland. Those who witnessed The Gloaming’s first appearance at the Mondavi Center in 2014 will surely return for another musical journey with this unique group.

Reduced Shakespeare Company William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (Abridged)

One of the most regrettably overlooked fake news stories of the past year is the discovery of William Shakespeare’s first dramatic work. Abridged down to 90 minutes, thanks to the able minds of the Reduced Shakespeare Company, this is a world premiere of a lost masterpiece that begins when Puck and Ariel hijack the plot of Comedy of Errors. In the Long Lost First Play, the company weaves the Bard’s most famous characters, greatest lines and magnificent speeches into an entirely new, comic tour de force. INDIA IN THE ARTIST’S EYE

Kudiyattam Sanskrit Theater Kudiyattam is the last living representative of the classical, 2000-year-old form of Sanskrit drama. Performances usually last for nights, but this condensed performance hosts two selfcontained episodes: the demon Ravana’s attack on the moon; and a sequence from Kalidasa’s Sakuntala. Virtuoso drumming with texts screened in subtitles as well as sung and enacted through hand gestures and eye expressions are a defining aspect of the performance. This is a rare chance to behold one of India’s oldest living theatrical traditions.

Eddie Palmieri Latin Jazz Band Eddie at 80 Celebrating his 80th year, 10-time Grammy Award–winner and NEA Jazz Master Eddie Palmieri hosts a party for the ages featuring some of the finest musicians around. Regarded as one of the top pianists of the past 50 years, Palmieri is a celebrated bandleader, arranger and titan of salsa and Latin jazz. By skillfully fusing the rhythms of Puerto Rico with the melodic and harmonic complexity of his jazz influences—Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner—Palmieri has established himself as a musical innovator whose work is both bold and downright danceable.

Pete Souza extensively documented Barack Obama’s first year in the Senate and accompanied the former president to seven countries, including Kenya, South Africa and Russia in 2005–06. Since Obama left office, Souza has made waves with his Instagram account, providing his own take on appropriate presidential behavior for the current administration. In this program, the chief official White House photographer takes us on a visual tour of key moments in Obama’s presidency and shares his recollections. Souza has won numerous photojournalism awards in the prestigious Pictures of the Year annual competition, the NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism and the White House News Photographers Association’s yearly contest—several times over.

Lara Downes Anniversaries for Lenny Pianist Lara Downes performs a special concert in commemoration of the 2018 Leonard Bernstein centennial (one of three events honoring Bernstein this season), playing songs from her most recent recording project Anniversaries for Lenny. By pairing Bernstein’s complete Anniversaries for Piano with a group of newly commissioned “Anniversaries” from prominent composers who are profoundly connected to his body of work, Downes’s program is a uniquely personal tribute to Bernstein. Circa Il Ritorno Australia’s Circa has always created work at the crossroads of cirque and modern dance. But never has the company so fully embraced that potential as in Il Ritorno. This eveninglength work is steeped in the movement vocabulary of cirque, but pushes that language to stunning new emotional and psychological ends. Accompanied by a string quartet and two singers performing excerpts of Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, seven dancers strive to connect with each other against a stark black wall, precariously lifting, holding, levitating and falling, their movements driven by the forces of desire, devastation and absence.

David Shifrin, CLARINET One of three events celebrating the 2018 Leonard Bernstein Centennial, the Curtis Institute of Music features a special program saluting Bernstein, certainly one of its most successful former students. Sultana Daku depicts the exploits of Sultana, a notorious thief from early 20th-century India who lived in the jungles of Uttar Pradesh with his gang of 300 robbers and his lover, Phulkanwar. This Nautanki is a humorous tale of the cat and mouse chase between Sultana and the British superintendent of police, Freddie Young. Dr. Devendra Sharma brings this century-old, extremely popular Nautanki classic to life for a contemporary audience.

UC Davis faculty and staff save at least 10% on all Mondavi Center Presenting Program purchases. Current and retired UC Davis faculty and staff are eligible. To qualify for the discount, a UC Davis email address must be provided when ordering. Limit two per event or series.

Student Tickets

UC Davis Students 50% off the regular single ticket price throughout the year. Find more information at mondaviarts.org/students.

Non-UC Davis Students 50% off the regular single ticket price through July 13, 2017. 25% off the regular single ticket price once single tickets go on sale July 14, 2017.

Full-time students age 18 and over, enrolled for the current academic year at an accredited institution and matriculating toward a diploma or a degree (continuing education enrollees are not eligible). Proof Requirements: School ID showing validity for the current academic year or copy of your transcript and tuition bill receipt for the current academic year.

Youth Tickets (age 17 and under) 50% off the regular single ticket price throughout the year. A ticket is required for admission of all children regardless of age. Any child attending a performance should be able to sit quietly throughout the performance. Unless otherwise noted in our Family Friendly events, it is recommended for the enjoyment of all patrons that children under the age of 5 not be brought to performances.

Accommodations for Patrons with Disabilities The Mondavi Center is proud to be a fully accessible state-of-the-art public facility that meets or exceeds all state and federal ADA requirements. Requests for accessible seating, sign language interpreting or real-time captioning may be made when purchasing tickets at 530.754.2787 or TDD 530.754.5402. Please allow at least two weeks’ notice for some accommodations, such as Braille programs. Service animals are always welcome, and must be on a leash or harness.

Listening Enhancement Devices Assistive Listening Devices are installed in both Jackson Hall and the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre. Receivers that can be used with or without hearing aids are available for patrons who have difficulty understanding the dialogue or song lyrics. These may be checked out at the Patron Services Desk in the lobby.

Parking You may purchase parking passes for individual Mondavi Center events for $9 per event at the parking lot or with your ticket order. Rates are subject to change. Parking passes that have been lost or stolen will not be replaced.

Late Seating All events start promptly at the time printed on the ticket. Latecomers will not be seated until the first appropriate pause in the program, as determined by theater management. Thank you for your cooperation. Please note that UC Davis is 100% smoke and tobacco free.
