WELCOME TO THE PEACH 2020 CONFERENCE Today is our chance to reflect: to step back at the end of another tumultuous year for the eating and drinking out market, away from the hurly burly of our day-to-day work, to take stock and look hard at the big issues we are facing now, and more importantly the challenges before us in the coming year. We have much to ponder. It’s a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty, with cost pressures and competition for consumers’ time and money as intense as they have ever been. Brexit rolls on, and just to throw everything up in the air, we have December’s General Election – which may or may not bring some clarity. It’s tough. For many, survival is more of a priority than looking for growth. Retrenchment is a word more commonly heard. But at the same time the public continues to go out to socialize, or be entertained or to grab their daily lunch – and entrepreneurial newcomers are still setting up shop. Enthusiasm and innovation are far from dead. And it’s that reality of a challenging market place contrasted with the ingenuity and drive of operators determined to succeed even in these times that we hope to highlight in both today’s conference programme and the Hero & Icon awards this evening. So I’m particularly delighted to have as my co-chair this year, chef, food writer, broadcaster, restaurateur and founder of the Mowgli brand, Nisha Katona MBE to add her fresh and invigorating perspective to proceedings. Peach 2020 will be tackling the big challenges head on. We’ll be getting a grip on the political landscape, and on central planks of our industry including the food supply chain; and mapping out two of the key paths to success and two issues that Nisha will be focusing on, generating and sustaining a true entrepreneurial spirit and attracting and retaining top talent. We’ll be doing this with the help of leaders from right across the sector, not to mention CGA’s own team of experts, spotlighting the big food and drink trends, the important dynamics in our towns and cities, the burning issue of sustainability and more. All that, and there’ll still be plenty of time for the best networking and socialising that the industry has to offer, and a welcome celebration of success as we reveal the winners of this year’s prestigious Hero & Icon Awards - the brands and individuals who have inspired us the most in 2019. It has never been more important to champion our achievements, to come together in the spirit of mutual support, and to look ahead with confidence to what lies down the road for this brilliant sector. I hope you leave our Conference and Awards with a head full of ideas for the months ahead, and the energy and inspiration to make our industry even better. Thank you to all the speakers and sponsors who make today possible - and thank you for being with us.

Turn information into insight. Headlines in the hospitality sector continue to be dominated by extremes ranging from CVA restructurings to record breaking M&A valuations. Interest in deals from private equity, trade and international buyers remains strong, albeit with a more careful focus on what sets a brand apart. At a time when the contrast between winners and losers has never been so stark, sector focussed advisers who truly understand your business may just give you a competitive edge

CONSUMER HERO AWARDS
We are delighted to present the shortlists for our 2019 Hero Awards. Our prizes are now in their 15th year, and competition for them has never been tougher. These 16 shortlists have been compiled with the help of our sector’s leading executives and CGA’s own exclusive BrandTrack data. It has not been an easy job, and that reflects the extraordinary quality and diversity of out-of-home eating and drinking operators now. Our lists feature no fewer than 60 different brands and companies, plus 13 individuals, and between them they cover the broad spectrum of UK restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes. Our Awards are in two sections. Eleven Industry Hero Awards are voted for by senior executives in the sector, while five Consumer Hero Awards are chosen by the British public via CGA’s quarterly BrandTrack survey. We also present Icon Awards, given to individuals who have left a significant mark on the out-of-home eating and drinking sectors. There are no shortlists for these Awards. This year we are also presenting our Special Award to an individual who is not an operator but who has made a significant contribution to the sector. We are looking forward to celebrating with our winners and all our shortlisted companies tonight, and wish you all the very best of luck.
