re-elected Marshall Liberal Government will build a new 15,000-person multipurpose indoor arena in the Adelaide Riverbank precinct. The new arena proposal has been developed by the Adelaide Venue Management Corporation and has undergone preliminary assessment by Infrastructure South Australia. Announced by Premier Steven Marshall, the arena is to be built immediately west of the Morphett Street Bridge and will cost approximately $700 million. Final costs will be released later in 2021 after further consultation and technical work. “This project will create jobs for South Australians and help cement Adelaide as one of the most liveable cities in the world,” said Premier Steven Marshall. “Our investment will take recent government and private investment in entertainment and convention infrastructure along Adelaide’s riverbank precinct to more than $2 billion.” The new arena, which will replace the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, will be capable of hosting concerts, conventions and court sports – including

A

basketball, netball and tennis. Sport and entertainment events in South Australia are currently limited by the capacity of the Adelaide Entertainment Centre and its location. The Adelaide Entertainment Centre currently has a total capacity of 11,300, with only 9,600 for basketball and netball. The new arena will seat 15,000 for all events. An underground tunnel below Morphett Street will provide a direct link with the Adelaide Convention Centre and will increase exhibition space by 5,600 sq metres. This is a significant new element to the project which is different to previous proposals. This significant increase in exhibition space will allow SA to compete for major international conferences and events that it can’t currently bid for. Construction of the arena will commence when major works for the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital is estimated to conclude in 2025. Once final costings are determined later this year, funding will commence in 2023 on planning and preparation for construction. This timing will provide certainty and stability to the South Australian construction sector.

KICK OFF | SEATING A closer look at products and projects from the world of sports seating.

2020 SEAT 2020 SEATING The 2020 Seat is the third-generation multi-purpose seat technology that provides all fans with a unique experience of their own choice by allowing them the option to sit or stand together in the same area. The regulatory compliant 2020 Seat design comprises an elevated seat to raise seated fans’ eye levels to the same height as standing spectators and can be fitted with a guardrail to provide the optimum safe standing option, or without a guardrail to improve views and levels of comfort to enhance the matchday experience. The 2020 Seat will ensure that ambulant disabled, non-visibly disabled and those fans who are unable to stand for long periods will be able to access all parts of a stadium, rather than be excluded from areas where fans stand. Hibernian FC’s safety officers said: “The seats have gone down well in away areas as the supporters in these areas feel that it is far better than what they have at their home stadium.’ The 2020 Seat installation at Wycombe Wanderers, which was installed over two years ago, has proved to be a great success, too. Unlike traditional safe standing areas, where all fans have to sit or stand at the same time, in the 2020 seating area, at any one time, there will be a mix of fans standing and sitting, all enjoying a great view.

012

With the advent of the double row or higher pitch advertising boards being implemented at many grounds to significantly increase advertising revenues, the elevated seat will raise seated fans’ sightlines above these higher boards, thereby avoiding a significant reduction in capacity due to seat kills. The 2020 Seat also offers cost saving benefits to stadium developers, as the elevated seat and enhanced fans sightlines will allow the reprofiling of existing terraces without demolition and will reduce the height of new stand construction by lowering terrace gradients and the overall height of stands. The versatile 2020 Seat has been adapted to enable its use on the flat and in the Golden Circle to give concert goers a new unrivalled experience. www.2020seat.co.uk

LONDON STADIUM ARENA GROUP While it is no secret that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating for the global events and sporting industries, the Arena Group is proud to have been able to persevere, adapt, and excel in the delivery of a number of world-class projects throughout 2020, despite the challenging conditions and restricted landscape. In February 2020 Arena was awarded a contract with E20 Stadium LLP, owners of London Stadium, to develop new seating systems in the north and south of the stadium, a project that was delivered at the height of the pandemic, on-time, in budget and without COVID-related incident. The contract saw Arena deliver two new lower tier stands bringing 6,000 fans up to four-metres closer to the pitch than the existing system allowed. The design created a traditional ‘kop’ feel to the seating arrangement for pitch-based events, such as football, helping to enhance the match-day experience for fans. The system also allows for faster seat moves between events to help reduce costs in the UK’s largest multi-use stadium. Graham Gilmore, CEO of London Stadium, said: “We are delighted to have delivered this project because of the additional benefits it brings, both in terms of bringing the stand closer to the pitch and providing more efficient seat moves. “Our multi-use Stadium brings major global sporting and entertainment events to London, along with Premier League football, benefiting the local and city-wide economy. This is a further example of the efficiencies and improvements we are driving to create a sustainable business for the long-term.” Designed, engineered, and built using Arena expertise exclusively, the iconic venue received a totally bespoke solution, utilising a combination of Arena’s highly versatile modular Arena Super Deck coupled with a custom development of the proprietary demountable Clearview tiered seating system, the ultimate spectator experience was created. Terry Smith, Managing Director of Arena Seating, said: “Arena Seating have been at the forefront of the temporary and

permanent seating sector for nearly 50 years, our expertise in stadia development is unique. With undoubtedly the largest dedicated team of seating specialists in the UK, we offer truly bespoke and highly tailored solutions.” With flexibility in mind, the system features a large, decked area, which significantly increases the versatility of the venue, reducing the time taken to changeover events by 60% and increasing accessibility for wheelchair users. Finished in a unique cladding solution, which covers any exposed sub-structure in claret red, this seamlessly blends the concourse into the existing stadium infrastructure. The innovative seating system delivers two new, lower Clearview tiered grandstands behind the goals, creating a more traditional football stadium aesthetic and bringing fans up to four meters closer to the action. Arena’s seating system has been built to the world’s highest fire safety standards and is fully design compliant with FIFA, UEFA and Premier League Standards. Following the successful delivery of the seating retrofit, London Stadium appointed Arena Group to install safety rails for more than 3,000 spectators. The rails will be installed in the upper tier of the South Stand to compliment the current layout following consultation with the Sport Ground Safety Authority (SGSA). The work is a positive move to ensure a safe experience for all football spectators at the venue and the first phase of work was completed on 31st March 2021. Terry concluded: “We are delighted to continue our innovative partnership with London Stadium, taking their challenging briefs for bespoke seating solutions from concept through to design and build is what we thrive on. The new safety rails will deliver further improvements to the London Stadium visitor experience ensuring fans can enjoy events from the comfort of their seats, with great sight lines and most importantly, safely.” www.arenagroup.com

QUANTUM CAMATIC SEATING Stadium seating is not a simple matter, whether you’re building an outdoor stadium with a capacity of 80,000 seats, or a boutique indoor arena of 2,000 seats, there is no-one-sizefits-all approach and countless hours of meticulous planning are required from preliminary design through to installation for all well delivered projects. It is the strategic planning that ensures optimised sightlines for all spectators, no unnecessary seat-count losses, on time and on budget delivery, and most importantly a comfortable memorable game day experience for spectators. The best stadiums and arenas are those that engage the fan-experience by putting spectators at the forefront of their design. Seating can often be overlooked, but is one of the most fundamental components in enhancing the spectator experience and should be recognised for the key technical roles that seating provides within any stadium or arena. This is why architects, venue owners and operators around the world choose Camatic Seating. Camatic Seating has been producing world-leading seating systems to stadiums and arenas around the world for more than 30 years, during which time they have become the go-to resource for expert seating solutions. As the leading supplier to the National Football League (NFL), Major League Soccer (MLS) and Grand Slam Tennis, Camatic has built a reputation within the industry for having the right skill set to deliver the best-inclass seating solutions that are designed to perform and push past all client expectations. Camatic Seating do not only provide stadiums and arenas with high quality products, but it is the superior technical capabilities in seating and project experience that sets Camatic from the rest and allows for any situation to be solved professionally and efficiently. Camatic Seating is arguably the only seating company in the world to maintain all phases of the seating design and manufacturing in house, developing products that are not only comfortable but globally certified to perform in the harshest environments from blistering heat and high UV to sub-freezing temperatures, in all conditions Camatic seats are built to last. The flagship product from Camatic is the Quantum, which is defined as the industry standard for high quality professional sports arena seating. The Quantum system has brought to

014

market the revolution of beam mounted seats, which provides ease of install, ease of maintenance and the ability to reconfigure over the life of the facility amongst many other profound benefits. With more than a million sold around the world, there’s no arguing Quantum is the world’s best stadium and arena seating system. In the past 12 months Camatic has completed the mammoth task of supplying more than 180,000 seats to three professional league stadiums within the United States, amongst many other projects around the world at a concurrent time including Wimbledon Court One and The Curragh Racecourse. The aforementioned stadiums are SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles and Chargers Stadium), Allegiant Stadium (Las Vegas Raiders) and Globe Life Field (Texas Rangers) all of which could not have been delivered without the resources and skill that comes with Camatic’s long term experience. The Raiders team understood the importance of seating while designing the Allegiant Stadium. “Camatic Seating out of Australia provided all the bowl seating in the stadium - they are one of the sports industry leaders in stadium seating and that was certainly one of the biggest reasons why they were selected,” revealed Joe Wright of Allegiant Stadium. Camatic are pleased to have recently launched several new products to market that are generating keen interest from architects and key decision makers. This includes the Quantum SQ 150, a compact fold-down retractable system that has the ability to retain arms and cup holders when used in a retractable setting, a feat which has not been seen before in a stadium. Camatic has also brought to market the Valencia Sport Fixed, an ultra-luxury suite seating system adapted from cinema seating technology and designed for VIP sections and owners suites. The success of Camatic is ensured long into the future with projects including West End Stadium (Cincinnati FC), Empower Field at Mile High (Denver Broncos), Arrowhead Stadium (Kansas City Chiefs), SDSU Aztec Stadium and numerous other projects around the world. www.camatic.com

RAILSEAT 100 FERCO SEATING For the first time ever football clubs with all-seater stadia have received correspondence from the SGSA to suggest they consider installing rail seats in their grounds. Persistent standing in all-seater stadia is an issue familiar to all Safety Officers and Operations Directors. Now the SGSA has advised them in a note accompanying their new stadium licence that in such areas they ought to consider using rails seats to enhance spectator safety. Ferco has installed nearly 17,000 rail seats all over Europe and is the market leader in this field. Now, with the requirements of Premier League and EFL clubs specifically in mind, it has further developed its range of products to include the RailSeat 100. It enables stadium operators to address the existing issue of persistent standing, while simultaneously preparing for formally permitted standing in the future. The RailSeat 100 has a modern aesthetic and conforms to Green Guide specifications for ‘seats incorporating barriers’. It features a self-tipping, moulded seat with a unique 100mm closed depth, making it the slimmest such seat on the market. It leaves clearway space of at least 0.21 sq metres (the Green Guide requirement for standing spectators), even on row depths of no more than 600mm. The seat has the strongest seat-base of any on the market and has the highest level of protection against vandalism. The robust and durable construction from quality materials means low levels of maintenance and replacement and reduced whole life costs to the club. The high-strength continuous metal rail acts as a protective barrier, which makes surging or crushing physically impossible.

The RailSeat 100 has a number of added safety features built into its design, including, for example, the absence of leg or finger traps through having a fully enclosed hinge at the very back of the seat. Where legislation permits, the 100mm closed depth also facilitates an increase in standing capacity on any seating row 800mm deep or more, as already provided for by the Green Guide. Ferco’s RailSeat 100 gives clubs a seating solution that is safe, creates space and is very strong. Safety and protection from falling forward is a given for all rail seats. But safety from leg and finger traps is not. With the RailSeat 100 it is. Space is also a key requirement, as standing fans need more of it. If seats incorporating barriers eat too much into the space along the row, there is a risk of fans spilling out into the aisles and the imposition of a capacity reduction. The RailSeat 100 takes up only 100mm of that vital space. Strength is key in areas occupied by boisterous fans. Seats made of single sheets of flimsy plastic easily break, and are especially susceptible to damage in areas where fans stand. The RailSeat 100, with its metal back and double-skinned blow-moulded seatbase, is much more robust and resistant to rough treatment. www.arenagroup.com

ECO-AVATAR DAPLAST Daplast, through its brand Insitual, has launched ECO-seating solutions as a green option to manufacture its Avatar stadium seating line. Following its clients’ requirements, Avatar plastic seating range could be manufactured with up to 55% recycled raw materials. It is the highest percentage offered in the market maintaining the same final product quality and strength and the same offer in colours range. Daplast wanted to be sure that the final product was going to maintain the same technical behaviour with recycled raw materials than with new plastics. This was not possible with the raw materials available in the market in the past. Quality is one of the company’s pillars and it was a must that recycled materials behaviour didn´t decrease final product resistance and durability. After a long research and investigation with different raw material suppliers, Daplast have found the best technical solution in terms of quality and sustainability. These recycled raw materials also proceed from different recycling processes. Now it’s guaranteed that it can produce the Avatar Seating line with up to 55% recycled raw materials maintaining the same quality and resistance. With this technology, recycled raw materials maintain the same standard product characteristics, it does not limit the range colour to green or black as other recycled materials do. Thanks to the combination of two types of recycling processes, recycled material availability is no longer a problem. It allows flexible production - even adjusting the production timelines to the most demanding project deadlines - which is another of Daplast’s strengths. The company’s suppliers are improving their Circular Economy 016

processes as well. Furthermore, these processes are very important to reduce greenhouse effect emissions. A recycled raw materials percentage proceed from mechanical recycling, but the most important aspect is that another percentage proceed from chemical recycling, a new system that allows to combine different kinds of plastic without the need to separate them previously and enables to recycle more plastic waste that otherwise would continue in landfills. In addition, chemical recycling process saves greenhouse effect emissions in comparation with other recycling systems. What is more, Daplast’s suppliers guarantee the origin of recycled raw materials with a certificate from an independent institution, which helps its clients to obtain LEED Certification for their sports venues. Another one of the company’s goals is to improve our processes and the use of resources to obtain a sustainable production, based in Circular Economy. It has strict control of all processes, so it is able to measure and improve each action to reduce greenhouse effect emissions, saving water and energy as well. To get official recognition of its efforts, Daplast are currently working along with the Spanish Government to measure, control and reduce our emissions in each process. It is working to be listed in the Ministry for Ecological Transition company register, which collects the efforts of Spanish organisations in the calculation and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions generated by their activity. www.daplast.com

I

t’s had multiple names since it first opened in June of 1992, but the Phoenix Suns Arena - formerly America West Arena, US Airways Center, Talking Stick Resort Arena, and PHX Arena - has been the home of the NBA Phoenix Suns since day one.

What has changed recently is how the venue looks and sounds, with a new L-Acoustics Kara II loudspeaker system in place and a full Daktronics videoboard kit out, just in time for the 2021 NBA season, which began with a Suns win over the Dallas Mavericks on December 23, 2020. Designed by AV consultants at WJHW and installed by Pro Sound & Video, a Solotech company, the new Kara II system is part of the $230 million Project 201: PHX Reimagined, designed to convert the nearly 30-year-old arena into a state-of-the-art sports entertainment venue for Phoenix Suns and WNBA Phoenix Mercury fans. According to Pro Sound & Video, the arena’s management specifically requested an L-Acoustics PA system as part of the ongoing and extensive venue renovation, including new distributed sound systems for the arena’s concourses and back-of-house areas. “The venue’s management has had positive experiences with L-Acoustics in other locations in the past, and the brand has become widely accepted by NBA arenas,” said Pro Sound. The integrator pointed out that Kara II was chosen for its light weight and powerful output capability. “We had to stay within certain weight limits on the steel for this project, especially since the system is designed to be pulled up and out of the way, potentially, when touring shows come through with their own sound systems,” they explained. “We worked very closely with the structural engineers to make sure we were well within the weight limits. At the same time, this is a large venue” - Phoenix Suns Arena has a seating capacity of over 18,000 - “and the sound needs to cover the entire seating area and court. Kara II is not only compact and lightweight, but it also has a lot of power for its size. And it offers a lot of sonic transparency as well.” With the number of fans in attendance still being strictly limited per current safety protocols, acoustical reflection and reverberation issues from empty seating areas are a potential concern. “Thankfully, Kara II has a tight dispersion directivity and high degree of speech intelligibility,” Pro Sound added. “Those have become more and more important in sports venue sound designs and are reasons why L-Acoustics is seen in more arenas and stadiums.” Phoenix Suns Director of Engineering and AV Technology, Gary Gillespie, agreed, citing hearing L-Acoustics systems installed at the NFL Arizona Cardinals State Farm Stadium and NHL Arizona Coyotes Gila River Arena in nearby Glendale. “I’m also a live-sound mixer, so I’ve had a lot of experience with L-Acoustics, and I’m a fan of their sound,” he said. “But our team leadership also highly values the intelligibility that Kara II brings to speech in the arena and the fact that L-Acoustics WST systems never cause ear fatigue for the fans. It’s just a great-sounding system.” The arena’s new system comprises six arrays of 14 Kara II enclosures for a total of 84 Kara II, plus a hang of four SB18i subwoofers flown in a cardioid configuration directly behind each Kara II array. In addition, there

DACIA ARENA Udine, Italy Images: Dacia Arena

O

pened in 1976, Dacia Arena – traditionally known as Stadio Fruili – is the home of Serie A football club, Udinese Calcio. As well as hosting Udinese matches, the 25,000-seat stadium has been the venue for FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League games,

along with a wide range of concerts, including the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay, Madonna, AC/DC and Metallica. In recent years, as one of the few clubs that owns their stadium, Udinese Calcio have been very ambitious in developing Dacia Arena – both structurally and in terms of technology when it comes to transforming it into a true, state-ofthe-art multipurpose venue. Speaking to MONDO | STADIA, Alberto Rigotto, Project Manager at Dacia Arena, explained further: “Initially, from a legislative and technology perspective, the minimum required works were carried out in order for the venue to be compliant and operational. “The technology design was fully developed afterwards – specifically, the lighting design and the environmental comfort were developed in order to create a modern, comfortable and efficient venue. The intention was, and still is, to guarantee the best match-day experience to our fans. We’re pleased that our work is recognised now at a national level.” Udinese are keen to emulate the successful stadiums in America, bringing more people and revenue to the club outside of the traditional match day. This renovation includes television studios, commercial offices, a medical centre, a museum, a fitness centre and more, as well as welcoming back large-scale concerts. It doesn’t stop there, either, as Alberto furthered: “We are working hard in order to let our stadium become the first-ever fully smart stadium in Italy. This will happen as soon as possible in four steps: full connectivity in every area; full digital processes for every service delivered at the stadium; fully cashless for food and beverage, merchandising, ticketing and seat delivery service; managing the digital transformation with blockchain solutions. The blockchain will allow Dacia Arena to be perceived as a real hub, where all the commercial activities and the entertainment events will interact 24/7. “Our ambition is that Dacia Arena will be the first smart arena and the first green stadium in Italy. A green stadium means 100% recycling processes for event waste - fully plastic-free and eco-sustainable with zero emissions.” JMA Wireless, a global leader of wireless technology systems, has been laying the groundwork for the new, digital experience for fans with their work at Dacia Arena. Infrastructure Wireless Italian, S.p.A. (INWIT), the leader in wireless managed infrastructure and services across Italy, commissioned the installation of JMA Wireless’ XRAN virtualised RAN software connected to a high-capacity indoor coverage system based on JMA TEKO DAS (Distributed Antenna System), to offer high quality voice and data connection. The solution marks the emergence of true all-software RAN technology, empowering a radically new approach in large venues, delivering on significant efficiencies, and enabling flexibility to deliver new capabilities faster than ever before. Moreover, it earmarks the shift toward managed service providers like INWIT, who provide the ability to operate edge network elements such as vRAN (virtualised radio access networks) in collaboration with mobile operators. Andrea Casini, Senior Vice President, International Business, at JMA Wireless, takes up the story: “At Dacia Arena, the club wanted a solution aligned with the new stadium design. XRAN is a virtualised baseband solution that allows extreme savings in OPEX with significant reductions of power, footprint, and cooling required to provide high performance and capacity at crowded

ABB FIA FORMULA E WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP Diriyah, Saudi Arabia Images: STAMiNA Productions / ADI

T

he 2020/21 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship got underway on 26-27 February, with a double-header in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. Returning to the UNESCO World Heritage site for the third season in a row, this year saw

the first ever Formula E night races, with the latest low-power LED technology being utilised to create a spectacular show while reducing energy consumption by up to 50% compared to most non-LED technology. Conducting the planning and organisation of the event once again was STAMiNA Productions, while the Ministry of Sports (MOS) appointed Blink Experience to handle the host city scope. Working closely with stakeholders Formula E (FE), MOS, Saudi Arabian Automobile and Motorcycle Federation (SAMF) and the promoter, CBX, the team was able to ‘achieve the impossible’ and hold this world-class international event in the middle of a global pandemic. Jennifer Gazeas, Head of Venue Design, Track and Overlay for the Diriyah E-Prix at STAMiNA Productions, explained how the team adapted to the ever-changing COVID-19 situation. “We shared a goal of holding the first ever night race for Formula E,” she began. “Holding the majority of meetings on Zoom, we all made it work and showed that with these tools, we can still plan together and show incredible resilience and professionalism.” She added: “This project needed to be meticulously planned, defined, implemented and executed with the objective of delivering the greatest experience for the fans attending and watching on TV. There were over seven months of design work, including extensive civil works consultation with the local authorities for the track resurfacing programme, track lighting and planning a COVID-19 safe event.” The Saudi-based agency brought onboard a number of trusted suppliers for the project, including ADI, Empro and MediaPro International. “The list of global and local suppliers that worked with us is extensive - each one brings their own individual experience and technical expertise which, when combined, allowed us to bring the impossible to fruition,” stated Jennifer. “There are always last-minute changes, and it’s then when you need a family of suppliers to call upon who are proactive, fully committed and supportive. At STAMiNA, our suppliers and partners are as important as our personnel and if there is a need for support for any contractor to allow them to do their best, then we will always provide that support.” As is to be expected on such a high-profile, international event, Formula E and the governing body of motorsport, the FIA, set strict controls to manage the risk of COVID-19. “It was up to us in partnership with the MOS, FE and SAMF to ensure that these controls were managed and exceeded,” furthered Jennifer. To that end, the site adopted a ‘bubble’ approach. A number of hygiene and health and safety measures were also in place, including temperature check and hand sanitising on entry, compulsory mask-wearing and regular PCR testing. With an ever-evolving COVID-19 situation and certain restrictions changing daily, STAMiNA had to ensure that the lines of communication

iedel’s leading-edge hardware and software technologies was at the core of the 360º concept for the coverage of the 36th America’s Cup presented by PRADA, provided for the event by host broadcast partner, circle-o. The concept included an innovative technology approach combining live TV production, event infrastructure, and race

management for the premier sailing event, that took place in the Hauraki Gulf off Auckland, New Zealand. Italy’s Luna Rossa PRADA Pirelli won the PRADA Cup Challenger Selection Series, defeating INEOS Team UK. That team faced the defender of the America’s Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand, on March 6. Riedel delivers innovative camera solutions, new audio technologies, and sensor technology embedded in a comprehensive technical infrastructure. This was supported by an on-site team of 30 members managing all audio, video, communications, tracking, and data transmission systems, including signals from on-board cameras, chase boats, and helicopters. Since all camera, microphone, and transmission systems must withstand extreme marine conditions, Riedel provided bespoke equipment aboard each competing yacht. To achieve this, Riedel harnessed the combined horsepower of the Riedel family of solution providers, ranging from Pidso’s antennas and radar systems over Igtimi’s GPS tracking

AEON LED Shahil Amin | VP Sales & Marketing, AEON LED Can you tell us more about AEON LED? AEON LED is our premier sports lighting luminaire brand, under our HyLite LED lighting family. HyLite LED is a well-diversified manufacturer of high-quality, future-generation, energy-efficient lighting products that are engineered for years of dependable performance. Our company focusses on innovation by providing efficient and costeffective lighting solutions, all while using 98% recyclable and sustainable materials in doing so. HyLite LED Lighting, a family-owned, certified MBE/DBE/ACDBE, operates out of a 58,000 sq ft facility in Charlotte, North Carolina. Our organisation is dedicated to providing customers with the highest quality products for use in the commercial, sporting, institutional, and industrial markets. At HyLite LED Lighting, our commitment to conserving energy is more than just ‘going green’. We desire to leave behind a better environment for our children and future generations to come. What do you provide when it comes to stadiums and sporting venues? As far as sports lighting solutions are concerned, we offer a full, dynamic range of options for the customer, each engineered specifically for their particular needs. Whether customers are looking to light up their local neighbourhood park, or their professional sporting team’s stadium, AEON is poised to meet any location’s specific needs. Which sporting venue projects have you worked on recently? Our latest project was a tennis court complex for the City of Atlanta, Georgia. To minimise upfront costs they used the existing 48 poles and did a one for one replacement of the 108 traditional Metal Halide Fixture to 108 pcs. 230W AEON Sports Luminaires. They get more control of the lights and, with AEON, you get instant ON/OFF capabilities and don’t have to wait for the lights to turn on.

We also completed the Fant-Ewing Coliseum at the University of Louisiana Monroe in Monroe, Louisiana. The 8,000-seat arena needed better light levels for broadcast and AEON provided the solution that exceeded their expectations. They got better light with lower maintenance and energy costs. The AEON solution is allowing the University to save time, money, and resources on more productive projects, instead of changing failed lamps and ballasts. Do you have any sporting venue projects coming up? We are always in the process of engineering a new photometric study for many different types of venues, both domestically and internationally. We have a few exciting projects in the works at the moment that we will be able to share with you later this year. How has it been for the company over the past year? Similar to most businesses, the pandemic did affect our business in some way. While some municipalities and school districts saw sports take a back seat, with capital spending going towards safety, others saw an opportunity to upgrade their facilities while the venues weren’t being used. This allowed us the opportunity to help plan out customer’s facilities when they are ready to make the switch towards LED lighting. What are the aims for AEON Lighting over the next few years? Our goal is to help as many customers as possible make the transition towards energy-efficient lighting. With a complete and dynamic range of products, we have solutions for the most basic of facilities to the most complex. We will be able to look at each individual venue and customise a value based solution for each.

What is your favourite sporting venue? As a small, family-owned business, we take pride in every project we complete. Our goal is to help as many customers as possible achieve their goals in regard to excellent illumination, ease of installation, and enjoying the benefits of reduced energy and maintenance costs. We did do a nice project at the finish line straightaway at Nashville Fairgrounds that stands out. We were happy to see a NASCAR Legend, Dale Earnhardt Jr, point out via social media that the track was looking great. It certainly was a nice feather in the cap to hear that kind of comment. How do you see stadium lighting technology developing over the next few years? I would say the hottest trend at the moment would be the shift from having simply a sporting venue and transitioning that into an entertainment venue through lighting. Many spaces are looking to fill their seats for other events such as concerts, fairs, etc. By having a fully controllable LED lighting system in place that can be turned on instantly with no warm-up period, and colours that can highlight specific events, more and more facilities are making that switch. This allows for additional revenue streams when sporting events may be in the off-season. These upgrades will simultaneously improve the fan experience by being engrossed in the moment during normal sporting events. The flashing of the home team colours upon entry or scoring, being able to highlight social causes and fundraising by flashing those colours, etc. all add to a more dynamic fan experience. www.aeonledlighting.com
