Recognising Production Talent In The Middle East
2018 Awards Brochure
TPMEA AWARDS 2018
WELCOME...
TO TPMEA: THE AWARDS BROCHURE
Dear readers, The first ever TPMEA Awards was a huge success, and that was down to a big team effort. The evening of socialising and networking was a chance to catch up with industry colleagues - as the Middle East events season drew to a close for the annual summer break - while also allowing people to take the time to acknowledge some of 2018’s outstanding individuals and projects. The evening of professional recognition included not only shiny new trophies and well-deserved praise, but a good old party too! The event took place on 9 May 2018 at Lock Stock & Barrel JBR The Walk in the Jumeriah Beach Residence area of Dubai, and where an incredible 400 attendees enjoyed live music and a free bar. Thank you so much to all of our guests for creating a wonderful atmosphere, our production and creative teams for helping to put the event together, and of course, our winners, for setting the bar high at our first ever TPMEA Awards. This brochure is a nod of appreciation to our winners and nominees; thanks to everyone who took part in our career profiling, and may you have a successful year ahead. We’re pleased to say we’ll be returning to the UAE again in 2019 for another night of live event celebrations... Stay tuned to our social media for more!

“I’m a former freelance audio engineer who has toured the UK, Europe and USA with artists such as the Foo Fighters, Metallica and Peter Gabriel to name but a few. After 15 years of touring and living in the cold and rain, the prospect of a permanently sunny place looked rather appealing, and I decided to move to Dubai. Having said that, with Dubai’s summer temperatures reaching 50°C, I now miss the rain! “I joined Protec in January 2010 as a Project Manager, and for the last 9 years have had the pleasure of working with a great team of individuals who deliver fantastic events of all kinds. I’ve lost track
of the number of events, but some of the most rewarding include the Dubai Canal launch, the F1 concerts, Heritage festivals, RTA Route 2020 launch, the NAS Sports Tournament Opening Ceremonies and the recent Special Olympics MENA Regional Games Opening Ceremony. “I was pleasantly surprised but pleased to be nominated by my peers for this award. To be in a group of fantastic AV Project Managers, who are also friends, made the group very close-knit, and although I’m very happy to have won, and I must credit the entire Protec team, for without them, this would not have been possible.”

AV PROJECT MANAGER OF THE YEAR
THE SHORTLIST Christian Eberlein “I first began working in the Middle East 8.5 years ago, when Neumann&Mueller Event Technology (N&M) asked me to move to Dubai - from Germany - to support and lead on key projects across this dynamic and diverse region. “Since joining N&M Dubai in 2010, I have helped them to realise several strategic projects for the Prime Minister’s Office – United Arab Emirates, the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs & The Future. I have worked on other long-term projects including The Museum of the Future for 5 consecutive years, and the Edge of Government for 2 years in a row. Plus, I have been part of the teams that have delivered other award winning events such as the NuSkin Gala Dinner and many UAE National Day Celebrations where I’m responsible for
delivering the event from the creative conception through to the final execution and delivery from a technical point of view. “A career highlight has been, and continues to be, working on and being involved in major initiatives such as The Museum of the Future. Immersive exhibitions that are incubators for ideas, innovation-drivers are set to become the world’s largest and most exciting home to tomorrow’s trends and opportunities. This exciting and challenging role has enabled me to continue my passion for travel and education by experiencing and learning from new cultures. I first experienced this notion at a young age; I was born in Germany and then lived in Norway, the United States of America, India and now Dubai.”
Tom Warneke “Not quite ready to return to Australia, I moved to Dubai from Hong Kong in October 2016, looking forward to exploring and working in a new part of the world. Dubai hasn’t disappointed. There’s been a number of highlights during my time here, from the vast array of outdoor festivals (RedFestDXB, Mother of the Nation and The Dubai International Jazz Festival) to the events that have taken me around MENA such as East Africa or
leading eclipse’s new operations in Saudi Arabia. “Dubai is an amazing production market with such a vast array of events and festivals happening all the time, with people from all over the world, so it’s an honour to be nominated in such a rich and vibrant sector amidst such a high calibre of fellow nominees; the great technicians, creatives, agencies and production teams I get to work with daily.”

CORPORATE AUDIO ENGINEER OF THE YEAR Winner: William Morrison Nominees: Mehdi Kelil Tariq Al-Hassan Wissam Shaheen
WINNER:
WILLIAM MORRISON
“Like many professionals in our industry, I got into audio through a love of music; I saw myself as a musician first and an audio engineer second, however, audio has since taken me on quite a journey. Towards the end of my school career, I discovered the world of music technology and pro audio. This led to a HND and later a BSc in audio. I started freelancing for a local AV/Events company and I fell in love with it - every day was different. “Post university, I worked in a different industry, but upon re-entering it, I was given the awesome opportunity to work for a major production house in Dubai. I owe it
all to them really. Dubai was like a different planet to what I was used to - I got thrown in at the deep end but it really pushed me forward. “I later decided that I wanted to be freelance again. Every day is still a school day; working with so may different companies, equipment and methods. I was truly humbled to have been nominated for the award. I know so many incredible people that could have equally have been nominated. To actually stand in a room in front of virtually the whole industry in Dubai and accept the award was just mind blowing. We don’t join this industry to win
awards but I feel so honoured and privileged representing the freelance community and to be recognised. “The evening itself was amazing and just a great way to round off the season. There were so many familiar faces, both friends and clients alike in an environment that wasn’t too formal. I think I speak for others when I say that there are other awards ceremonies that don’t necessarily acknowledge the foot soldiers on the ground, but TPMEA Awards did exactly that. Thank you for such a great night – it will certainly be one in the social calendar for years to come!”.
TPMEA AWARDS 2018
THE SHORTLIST Mehdi Kelil “I started my career in 2007 when I joined the Higher Institute of Arts Multimedia in Tunis to study Audio Engineering. After graduating in 2011, I relocated to Dubai and began working for a company called Sound on Stage where I gained a great deal of experience. “I then progressed to work for Delta Sound in 2013 as a
sound engineer. After almost 5 years of experience, I’m now working as Project Manager and as a DiGiCo Technical Support Specialist. “I was simultaneously surprised, proud and happy to be shortlisted for this TPMEA Award. It was a very nice recompense after many years of hard work. It was an honor to be nominated.”
Tariq Al-Hassan “My career kicked off in Dubai when I became a resident engineer at the now defunct Music Room in Bur Dubai. I managed to meet the majority of musicians in the local scene, along with a range of industry professionals and engineers. After almost 2 years of working at this local venue, I was luckily offered the opportunity to work for a large rental company, Protec, which lead me to my current position at eclipse.
Wissam Shaheen “I have been involved in pro audio and the live entertainment industry for 18 years. I took the jump from the studio into live audio back in 2004, from corporate to rock ‘n’ roll and whatever comes in between, it was love at first sight! “I made the move to Dubai in 2014 after being contacted by John Parkhouse, Dubai-based audio veteran, and eclipse Staging Services’ Head of Audio. I was contracted as a freelancer for a couple of months and was offered a Senior Audio
Engineer position almost immediately after that stint, which I gladly accepted. eclipse Staging Services tasked John with rebuilding its audio department, which lead them into investing largely in d&b audiotechnik products. As I have been a user and a huge fan of d&b audiotechnik throughout my live audio ventures, it was a very easy transition for me and felt like an organic move forwards. I’ve recently been involved with the Special Olympics MENA Games, The Culture Summit in Abu Dhabi and RedFest DXB.”
“I’ve had the opportunity to mix monitors and FOH for many bands such as The Charlatans and Chic, as well as work on an array of amazing corporate gig, awards ceremonies, product launches and sporting events. I’m proud to be a part of this region’s events industry and love that I get to work with so many fantastic people. It was great to see the TPMEA Awards recognising people for their efforts.”

LIVE AUDIO ENGINEER OF THE YEAR Sponsored by Sennheiser
Winner: Rob Eatock, Delta Sound Nominees: John Parkhouse Andrew Hawkes Al Woods
WINNER:
ROB EATOCK, DELTA SOUND THE SHORTLIST John Parkhouse “I first arriving in Dubai in 2005 to work for Gearhouse, then moving to Protec in 2007 and finally eclipse Staging Services in 2013. I have a lot of people to thank for what is a great and constantly developing career in the Middle East. I am glad and lucky to be a part of having seen the region rapidly mature and the standards rise to the point where I think here you can find companies who offer the equivalent quality to anywhere in the world. “Personal highlights for me have been working on a vast amount of large concerts over the years at venues such as Emirates Palace and Dubai Media City. Also, the extravagant special events that blur between concert and corporate that we get to do in this region which you will likely not see anywhere else. Each one is always just as fun as it is challenging. “However, my stand out show was when I was System Engineering for Ellie Goulding
in 2015 with Joe Harling mixing FOH at Dubai Music Week. For me this announced eclipse Audio as a real force who deliver world class standards. It may genuinely be amongst one of the best sounding live gigs I’ve ever heard. It was also the first time we engaged d&b audiotechnik’s array processing and the results were simply beyond words. “I was both humbled and proud to be nominated for the inaugural TPMEA awards last season. I’d actually like to dedicate my nomination to the memory of Mark Brown. Without his faith and belief I simply wouldn’t be featured on these pages. An incredible man and legacy. “Finally I’d like to congratulate Rob Eatock on winning the award, in my early days here Rob was a mentor whom I’ve also always considered a friend. I can not think of a single more deserving audio practitioner in the region to have received the award.”

TPMEA AWARDS 2018
THE SHORTLIST Andrew Hawkes “I first got into the events industry in the Middle East because I was offered the job at Dubai Opera. Prior to this I was freelancing in London and had worked with English National Opera doing some sound design. It’s been a big challenge at times but also hugely rewarding, breaking new ground in the UAE. “There’s been many highlights and it’s hard to pick but if I had to choose. Lea Salonga’s show was a great thing to be part of. She is fantastic anyway but there’s such a strong Filipino community here which created an incredible atmosphere. Followed
Al Woods “Prior to moving to the region, between 2008 to 2014, I was the Director of a limited company based in the UK. The company was predominantly involved in the audio design side of the professional worldwide touring market. Whilst still mixing FOH for various artistes and designing large scale touring audio systems, I also used the company for production and stage management services, booking crews and putting together productions. “Eventually I decided jump off the bus and retire from touring to further my career and also try to pass on my experience to younger guys in the industry. After finishing Take That Progress and London 2012, I took up a job offer with his old friend Andy Jackson and move to Dubai. It seemed like a great opportunity to help build the business and keep doing what I love - live audio. Not to mention, finally having a wardrobe for my clothes!”
“Having been based in Dubai of 5 years I have had the chance to work a number of large scale concerts and festivals with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Muse, Take That, Kylie Minogue, Kasabian, Justin Bieber, Michael Bublé to name but a few. It’s great to still keep the relationships I had back in the western world and service the guys I used to work with regularly. “I personally also look after Delta’s Ohsas 18001 Health and Safety Management It’s hard work but extremely important to make sure Delta follows correct procedures. We make sure we protect our team and fellow workers keeping them safe both in the warehouse, offices and on site.” The Delta team and I are extremely proud of where we are now in the region from Andy’s humble beginnings here in Dubai with Delta. We are now recognised worldwide as a go to company for all manner of events, and that’s not just in our region.
closely by Placido Domingo. At the end, there was an older lady from the Middle East sat near me who was emotional. She never imagined it would be possible to see her favourite singer perform live in person and it was that point that I really felt the importance of having this type of venue in Dubai. “To be nominated for this award is a huge compliment. The other guys on that list are people I hold in high esteem and they are amongst the best worldwide not just in the region.”

ENTERTAINMENT MANAGER OF THE YEAR Winner: Zinaida Mascarenhas, Stories by Zinaida Nominees: Dan Bolton Louisa Allen Zaed Maqbool
WINNER:
ZINAIDA MASCARENHAS, STORIES BY ZINAIDA “I have been working in the entertainment industry for the past 18 years. Starting off as a DJ, then a stage manager, artist booker, production coordinator, and now, I run Stories by Zinaida as an independent boutique live entertainment agency based in Dubai. “I’ve been afforded the opportunity to live and work in various cities across India, Sri Lanka, Paris, and the UK before moving to Dubai, giving me first-hand experience and exposure to international events and talent. “Winning Entertainment Manager of the Year at the TPMEA Awards was fantastic. It hasn’t been an easy ride and there have been a lot of sacrifices made in the past 5 years, so it’s definitely an amazing feeling to be recognised for my work. Well done to TPMEA for appreciating and commending individuals that work tirelessly behind the scenes”. “In the UAE, I’ve worked with 2 agencies in Dubai, before deciding to launch my own brand, Stories by Zinaida, last year. There is a story waiting to be told in every form of entertainment and at Stories by Zinaida we control the narrative of that story through creative expressions - delivering experiences, not just performances. We are not just artist bookers and entertainment managers; we are storytellers, curators

and visionaries. We take the booking process one step further by aligning our clients’ brand values and objectives with the entertainment we deliver on stage. We are very fortunate to have such talented professional resident entertainers in the UAE - it makes our job so much easier! “A personal highlight in my career so far has been winning the pitch for one of the biggest entertainment contracts in the UAE
for the past 3 years – the F1 Abu Dhabi GP. “To be given the opportunity to book and manage around 400 performers at this international event each year is a dream come true - from local to international talent, working on new concepts, choreography, costuming, programming, curating, stage management, hospitality and logistics, as well as the Opening Ceremony each year.
THE SHORTLIST Dan Bolton “My career in the entertainment and events industry started way back in 2000 when I was a circus performer and commercial dancer. My parents long had aspirations that I would have a ‘proper’ job so to supplement my clowning around I worked with the agency as a talent agent and then subsequently as a business development manager liaising with talent and clients. “Fast forward to 2008 and an opportunity came up to move to Dubai and open the entertainment division within an already successful modelling agency. Within a matter of months, we were working on some very prestigious events in the region from corporate events in Doha to the opening of the Atlantis The Palm and National Day ceremonies in the UAE. “In 2015 I left the agency and opened
my own creative company, specialising in talent management and supplying creative performances to live and corporate events. We have been extremely fortunate to be involved in many of the regions leading events such as the F1, Louvre Abu Dhabi opening, 2015 National Day ceremony at Zayed stadium, Happiness festival parade and the Arab Women’s Sport Tournament opening ceremony to name a few. “The Middle East is a great platform and location which enables us to do business around the world. I am just completing a 7-month contract as an associate choreographer for the 2018 Asian games opening and closing ceremonies in Jakarta with LA based Five Currents. The rest of 2018 and 2019 look set to be promising with opportunities not just within the Middle East but globally.”
“Besides working with leading event agencies in the UAE, my client list includes Yas Marina Circuit, Etisalat, Meraas, Al Tayer Motors, Dubai Tourism, Abu Dhabi Municipality, and more. “I’ve only been in Dubai for 5 years, but I believe it’s the drive, passion, relationships, reliability, creativity and doing whatever it takes to finish the job without compromising values that leads to success in the industry.”

Through determination, the power of persuasion- not to mention some Scottish charm - I was enrolled as the first British student in the Travel and Tourism course at Dubai Polytechnic. “Following graduation, my initial brought me into the hotel industry, in particular, the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. I utilised my skills to become a member of the pre-opening teams for the Burj Al Arab and Emirates Towers. My thirst for selfdevelopment brought me back to Scotland where I earned a BA in Hotel and Hospitality Management from Strathclyde University. “Upon my return, I built up a portfolio of management positions, and added many feathers to my cap in the process, including titles ranging from Production Manager to Project Manager, to Stage Manager and Artist Manager. In addition, I became Head of Operations for the world-renowned Volvo Ocean Race, a responsibility that called for every aspect of my skills and expertise. “While working in the region, I’ve worked with acclaimed acts including Madonna, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Guns N’ Roses, and Stevie Wonder, playing and integral role in the organisation of their live performances in Dubai. “Pavarotti was a highlight. His farewell
tour in 2005 was a career-defining experience. I also successfully closed down a stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road to stage a race between imported performance cars and a helicopter! Project managing the soldout, first ever blacked out show, iLuminate, in Saudi Arabia in 2016 was another professional highlight.
“I’ve worked with everyone from Tom Jones to Aerosmith, but never rest on my laurels - it’s the furthest thing from my mind. THE SHORTLIST Cathleen Busse “I always wanted to work in events. During my Event Management study in Denmark, I got the opportunity to undertake an internship to Pico Dubai, and I jumped at the chance. In February 2007, I arrived and am still here 11 years later. “During my fulltime and freelance projects, I’ve gained lots on experience in the different areas of the events field, specialising in medium to large scale and complex projects with multiple sub-tasks. Today, I enjoy working in the key role of a Events Project Director or Producer. With a great team around me, I have helped to produce and manage award-winning projects, from private corporate launches to international
conferences, opening, closing and award ceremonies, corporate events and exhibition stands. “My personal highlight working as a freelancer was delivering a Guinness World Record breaking event; the Dubai Tram Launch with the largest 3D hologram ever built, and 9 stations illuminating the Dubai skyline with fireworks. I consider myself as an expert in Middle East events with a client list including Audi, RTA, Abu Dhabi and Dubai government, Land Rover, Jaguar and many other brands, yet it was a big surprise to be nominated. I felt proud to be recognised in the industry and happy to be part of such a great event industry in Dubai with amazing people.”

My role progressed in time to include working with some of Salt & Pepper’s most respected clientele, as the Events and Creative Director. “Working with reputable global brands, my role heavily consists of connecting with

Paul Coopes “I moved to Dubai in August 2014 to work for PRG Gearhouse as I wanted exposure to the large-scale events that the Middle East could offer. It felt like being thrown in at the deep end, but the support and knowledge I gained from my peers and colleagues was the best experience I could have hoped for. “As a freelancer, I’ve been able to work on some amazing events in the region for some great companies. One of the first was being asked to design the lighting for the opening of Motiongate at Dubai Parks and Resorts. Working alongside Giochi di Luce, we provided a 3-minute timecoded lighting, laser and video mapping show that showcased the new attractions.
“Another highlight was when Maestra asked me to design and operate a private concert with Robbie Williams, which was a major highlight. These are the sort of events that I would never have had access to in the UK. “My main passion in lighting lies with the dance music and luckily in Dubai, there is no shortage. From shows at Nasimi Beach to Tomorrowland Unite, I’ve been fortunate enough to light some of my favorite DJs from around the globe. “I really love my work in the region and believe we have some of the most experienced people around and it’s amazing to learn from them each day.”

THE SHORTLIST Farhanah Magumpara “It was a real surprise to be nominated for Production Coordinator of the Year. When I first came in the Middle East - Dubai in particular - I never thought that I would be involved in event management. I started as a Customer Service Representative back in 2014 and I realised that it wasn’t the right job for me. “I then got an opportunity as a Procurement Executive in Red Event Services LLC. After a year, I got an even
better opportunity to work in our Production Department, from then on, I couldn’t stop! I love what I do and really enjoy working on site. I never stop being fascinated by the concepts, designs and other event elements that are turned into a reality. “I am so grateful for the trust from our management team and to our Production Director Marcin Banaszewski for the chance given to me and realisation that is particular industry is where I belong.”
the Prime Minister’s office. I hold a first class honours degree in Event and Production Management from Teesside University in the UK. “I was actually extremely shocked to win this award. I will definitely be attending next year!”

THE SHORTLIST
Joan Iris Abuso “I first set foot in the events industry in 2016. It was a leap of faith to say the least as I actually started my career as a licensed nurse! Changing careers was a challenge and learning a new craft that kept me rooted was fun. “From understanding the basics, to knowing the ins and outs, it wasn’t an easy ride at all, but perseverance and resilience paid off. “Liaising with suppliers, raising LPOs, arranging deliveries to
Gia Carla Roque “I originally went to college for journalism. I got my first job in Manila as a copywriter for a boutique PR company based in Hong Kong, and at that time, I was also a contributor for Cosmopolitan Magazine in the Philippines on digital format. “I moved to Dubai after being offered a job as a PR Manager to manage local and international clients. These ranged from finance and banking, to non-profit and retail sectors where I mostly handled all client press releases. I also handled events such as press conferences, media roundtables and launches. A couple of years later, I joined Evolution Events and realised that this industry is something I was really passionate about. “The first ever event that I was involved in was the UAE’s inaugural Mother of the Nation Festival in 2016 where I did a lot of research, writing and had the chance to meet with a lot of different prospective suppliers to work
with for the event. “Throughout my entire career in the events industry, I have intensively learned about protocols and procedures, to be more organised more proactive and to go above and beyond each client’s expectations. “Some of my highlights do the last few years have been Barakah Nuclear Launch, Special Olympics Launch Events Abu Dhabi and Sandooq Al Watan Retreat. What I love about my job is being able to be creative and bounce off my ideas with the team and suppliers along with collaborating different people. But for me, seeing the physical outcome of each project that I’ve worked hard for, is the most rewarding thing ever! Being in events is never boring; it’s not a routine job. Everyday I learn something new that allows me to expand my understanding of people, design and cultural backgrounds from all walks of life.”
processing permits, I like to get the job done. I’m lucky enough to be a part of the team that has delivered high profile events in the country for respected clients, providing administrative and production support both in the office and onsite. “I have recently been promoted to Assistant Production Manager, reaping the seeds of my hard work, while still in pursuit of the complex yet fascinating world of events.”

PRODUCTION MANAGER OF THE YEAR Sponsored by Delta Sound
Winner: Nadine Manning Nominees: Roy Zeidan Samantha Stacey Stefan Wieland
WINNER:
NADINE MANNING “I’ve built a reputation as one of the most energetic and capable event production managers in the local industry having arrived in Dubai in 2002 following a 2-year stint in London. The first event I worked on was the Dubai Rugby 7’s with a catering operations team. Since 2003 I’ve worked in a myriad of roles including Production Manager, Operations Manager and Site Manager on some of the most complex events to be held in the region. “Starting my events career in Dubai within the fast-paced world of the Dubai World Trade Centre, I then moved on and maintained a full-time job for 7 years with one of Dubai’s leading event management companies, HQ Creative. “I’ve since gone freelance, and haven’t looked back. My experience in the UAE has enabled me to become a competent project manager with the ability to recruit, manage and coordinate a full production team and, in turn, a timely delivery of all logistics, site technical, staging, décor and other
infrastructure, operation and subsequent derig. “Some of my favorite jobs to work on in the past 16 years have been the DIFC Anniversaries, Mother of the Nation Festival in Abu Dhabi, Dubai World Cup, The launch of Vodaphone in Qatar, Qasr al Hosn, RedFest DXB and many other concerts for Done Events and 117 Live, F1 concerts, and the visit of the Queen to Abu Dhabi. “In terms of challenges, spending 3 months in the Saudi Arabian desert for the first event of a privately owned boutique Hotel for a team from the US was probably the most challenging and exhausting job ever! “Winning the 2018 Production Manager of the Year was a great highlight for me; to be nominated was a great surprise as there are many great production managers working in the events industry here but to be voted for by my fellow peers to win the award puts all the hard work and sweat into perspective! I have loved working with all
the various teams over the years and will continue to do it for as long as the industry will employ me. It is great to see that the events industry in the UAE is recognising the talented companies that build and produce some of the greatest events ever. “Kudos to all those nominated this year and those who were not but still continue to shine. Congratulations to the winners of 2018!”

TPMEA AWARDS 2018
THE SHORTLIST Roy Zeidan “I started my career in Lebanon, operating Byblos International Festival every year. This is where I met the owner of JK58, which is based in Lebanon. From there I started a full time job and was given the opportunity to relocate to Dubai in 2012. “Over the years, one of my career highlights has been the New Year’s celebration at Burj Khalifa that I have had
the privilege to be a part of for the last 6 years. Other large accomplishments were sporting events like Nike’s We Run DXB and The PSA World Series Squash Finals. “I have also worked on various concerts held in Media City and many car launches for Jaguar and Toyota. In 2017 I decided to go freelance to take on a new challenge, and this year have continued to take on more exciting events.”
Stefan Wieland I have been part of the Middle East event industry since January 2000, after finishing the Millennium Show in Berlin. My first role was with Space Cannon Illumination Middle East, an AV technology provider based in Abu Dhabi. “Once settled in, I led the production team of the company and was responsible for developing and executing the setups and derigs for shows, including staff bookings, materials booking and scheduling. “In 2003 I began touring again and joined several artists whilst maintaining a base in Dubai. In 2005, I started working with Neumann & Müller to open and establish the UAE branch and by 2008
Samantha Stacey “I first started in event industry part time, working backstage for various concerts in the Middle East while working a full time job elsewhere. I soon realised that this was the industry for me, and I wanted to get more involved. I was determined to understand every aspect of how everything clicked together to be successful. “Through a lot of perseverance and working with many challenges and mistakes, I had gained enough knowledge to quit my full time job and become a
freelancer to evolve my skillset in event production. I was able to work with various companies, people of different cultures and some truly incredible events to fine tune my skill set. “A rewarding experience for me was the Government Games: we created a challenging obstacle course for governmental teams in Dubai to compete against each other! There was a lot of challenges, but it became a very successful 3-day event, and I was very proud to be a part of it.”
I’d joined Mamemo Productions where I worked until 2010. There, I was part of some of the great live events in the Middle East. “Working as an independent production specialist until 2012, I worked in Asia on some great projects too. In 2014 I became an independent freelancer in Dubai and have worked as a production director on the Opening of the World Air Games, the Opening Ceremonies of the 2016 & 2018 ISNR, the World Tourism Conference 2017, the F1 after-race concerts in Baku 2016 & 2017 as well as the F1 Ceremonies in Abu Dhabi 2017. RIGGER OF THE YEAR
Sponsored by Prolyte
Winner: Andreas Ehrenberger, eclipse Staging Services Nominees: Mark Smith Ryan D’Cunha Shane Manning
WINNER:
ANDREAS EHRENBERGER, ECLIPSE STAGING SERVICES “Before I specialised in rigging, I worked more in Production and Operation Management and was partner and CEO in my own company which I left and sold my shares in 2015. Before I started my role in the Middle East as Head of Rigging at eclipse Staging Services LLC, I took care of several rigging responsible for numerous international heavy weights. Over the years I’ve been involved in a selection of high profile events including Justin Bieber’s and Take That’s performance, World Skills Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Dubai World Cup Welcome Reception and Opening and Closing Ceremonies in 2017 and 2018. “At the first stage when voting for the shortlist has been announced, I did not know about it at all. Of course I knew of the TPi Awards in Europe and know a couple of guys who won it already. Friends and Colleagues mentioned to me that they have given me their votes to get shortlisted and that was the moment I heard from the award the first
time. Without any expectations I attended the night when the shortlist has been announced and was more than surprised that I was nominated. “After the first shock pride came up and I thought being shortlisted for that international recognised prize, will be by far the biggest achievement in all my career. I wasn’t expecting any chances to win and thought the other fabulous mates who were shortlisted have achieved much more in the Middle East than I have. “The awards evening was fantastic. I was surrounded by many personal friends and colleagues to celebrate. Admittedly the next morning I woke up with a bad hangover and realised that even being the new Rigger of the year does not protect me from work and went onsite for a derig of a large size cooperate show. Gravity was the same. Weight of trussing and motors were the same and the AC was turned off – regardless if the Rigger of the year was in the house.”

THE SHORTLIST Mark Smith “I came to Dubai to work on the show La Perle. This is the first time working on a show of this scale. I came in at the end of 2916 working with a team of 18 people. I helped to finish installing the hardware for show, before going to the training facility in studio city and working with the cast for the creation of the acts we would be using. Now the show is up and running we are responsible for the safety of the artists while in the air and maintenance of all the equipment. Come and see the spectacular La Perle!”
Ryan D’Cunha “Having spent many years as a freelance Rigger, globe trotting with various shows and productions I finally settled in Dubai 5 years ago. Initially working as a freelancer for various clients. I’m now the Managing Director of iRIG, which has continued to go from strength to strength. “Projects we’ve been proud to be part of include the major automation install of La Perle by Franco Dragone, The Founders Memorial architectural installation and inaugural show and the scenic installations at Dubai Parks & Resorts and Bollywood Parks.”
Shane Manning “Before moving to Dubai, I was based in the UK. In 2003, eclipse Staging Services won the contract to deliver FIFA World Congress in Doha and were looking for staff to be based full-time in Dubai. The rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle was catching up with me in the UK, so I packed up 5 years of my life and went to Dubai with a one way ticket. “It helped having my sister already living here. She was working in the Trade Centre at the time, so also knew a lot of the event crew, and I settled straight in. “My career highlights so far include
working on the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the Athens Summer Olympics, the Doha Asian Games & the Manchester Commonwealth Games. Not to mention rigging for countless live gigs including the Rolling Stones, Madonna and Metallica on Yas Island, Guns N’ Roses at the Autism Rocks Arena in Dubai, The Pope at Amman, and Jordan and Pavarotti at Madinat, Dubai. “And of course, installing 2 of the world’s longest urban ziplines for X Dubai over the fountains at the Dubai Mall, and more recently, the 1,000m long zipline of Dubai Marina.”

SFX ENGINEER OF THE YEAR Winner: Olly Yates, Laser FX Nominees: Joey Paul Jackson Michael Hilgemann Piotr Szablowsi
WINNER:
OLLY YATES, LASER FX “I came to Dubai in October 2016 to take a full-time job at Laser FX in order to further my knowledge within the laser industry. I had freelanced for a few summers at festivals but wanted to do the job full time. “Working for Laser FX has helped me learn so much. Not just how to operate lasers but how fixtures work and how to repair them, helping me broaden my knowledge of BEYOND, Pangolin Laser System software. “One of my first ever jobs was to project logos for Red Bull cliff diving, something I hadn’t done before. It was challenging. However, the end result looked really good. My favourite job was when I had to map the Aldar Headquarters building in Abu Dhabi.
The building was a very awkward shape and I couldn’t program on site so it was all pre programmed in our WYSIWYG suite. This was the first ever mapping job I had done and had to call a friend for a little advice as it was for the UAE 46th national day. “I was so pleased when I received an inbox on Facebook from a friend showing me I had been shortlisted for the award. To know people in the industry had acknowledged my work and had nominated me was very humbling. When I won, I was completely shocked. Especially as I had only been in Dubai 18 months and was up against a high level of competition, especially knowing their capabilities and experience in the industry. Thanks you to all the voted!”
TPMEA AWARDS 2018
THE SHORTLIST Joey Paul Jackson “I started out when I was 19 with no experience. I’d recently just come back to the UAE after being away and was in need of a job, I started out at a family friend’s special effects company. After a few months an opportunity came up to work at the company I’m working at currently; SNAP. I thought it would be a great chance to learn and develop my skills within the industry, seeing as the company was also new. However, it had some very experienced staff, such as Director Darren Hodge. “On my first day I spent most of the time in front of the lighting console with the help menu open and refusing to ask people for help because I wanted to try figure out how to do things first. “When SNAP first invested into special effects I thought, “fantastic, this is my chance to show people what I can do”. With that in mind I’ve always had a strong respect for special effects, as its requires a high level of safety. As a team we never
rush things and follow proper safety procedures. “With SNAP I’ve been given the opportunity to work on some high profile corporate shows and events. These included the grand opening of Dubai Parks and Resorts. For this I was in charge of the laser aspect of the opening ceremony. Another example was the Dubai Canal opening ceremony where I was in charge of SFX. Other highlights over the years include events such as RedFestDXB and Fiesta de Los Muertos. Nothing beats the feeling of when you hear a crowd scream, as the first flame or CO2 cue of the night goes off. “When I found out I was in the running for SFX Engineer of the Year I was thrilled. Especially knowing some of the other competitors and working alongside them a few times. The quality of work they do made me feel very happy about myself, knowing that other people considered me at their level.”
Michael Hilgemann “I established Matrix Laser in the UAE in 2006 as a branch of our existing German company, which at the time primarily focused on manufacturing and sales of show laser systems. After being in the industry for over 25 years, a steady stream of rental requests from the GCC let me do the inevitable decision. I’ve not regretted this once, and it has been an amazing journey to be part of the growth of the events industry in this part of the world. “Matrix Laser currently offers bespoke laser shows for live entertainment events,
corporate events, architectural illuminations, as well as the complete range of special effects. Having contributed to several world-class events in the region, highlights include the annual laser show from the rooftop of the iconic Emirates Palace to celebrate UAE National Day, which we have done for 7 consecutive years to date. Another memorable event was the historic 2017 National Day celebration for The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which was the first time ever for woman to be allowed in the King Fahd International Stadium.”

SITE INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT MANAGER OF THE YEAR
THE SHORTLIST Nuno Vital “I studied aeronautical sciences in the USA and Brazil, and graduated as a commercial aviation pilot. My entry in the events industry happened later and was a welcome and unexpected career move. This opportunity presented itself when I was approached to work as project leader for operations and production on the biggest rock festival in the world, Rock in Rio, held in Brazil, Portugal and elsewhere. This led to handling a range of other major live events, such as World Youth Day, Rio Carnival and Campus Party Festival. “Following the success of these projects, I was approached to become account manager of MTD, a company supplying temporary water structures for major events. In the role I worked on major international events such as the 2014 Football World Cup in Brazil. Later, I was promoted to the position of General
Manager and took over responsibility for the entire South American market, with projects as diverse as the 2015 Olympic Test events, which culminated in the 2016 Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro. “Moving to the Middle East in early 2017, my role as Project Manager at Losberger De Boer has presented a new challenge for me to manage a range of innovative, temporary event structure and semi-permanent building projects throughout the GCC region. Today, I handle most of Losberger De Boer projects in the Gulf region. Highlights include building the largest temporary exhibition hall in the Middle East - Bay-X in King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia and fifteen buildings at the new Qiddiya Entertainment Resort near Riyadh, which is one of three Saudi giga projects part of Vision 2030.”

To my Even2 team and all the people I have worked with, I do not view this award as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of our total efforts.

Each season brings a new highlight. There’s a lot of last minute changes on crew requirements and I attend to each one of them!”
Kevin Crosley “I started my career at Essential Lighting in 2002 as Head of Power. Following the PRG purchase in 2009, an opportunity arose for a Warehouse Manager. “Over the years, I have worked on some amazing projects. One that springs to mind was Lighting up the Burj Khalifa, while working with several other companies was a real challenge and a very proud moment when it all came together. Outstanding Event Production of the Year
OUTSTANDING EVENT PRODUCTION OF THE YEAR Winner: ISNR Opening by Red Events Nominees: RedFestDBX by Done Events Galactica by Global Event Management ISNR Opening Ceremony by Red Events
The International Exhibition of National Security and Resilience (ISNR), co-organised by the Ministry of Interior, is a global event offering a networking platform connecting regional government bodies, homeland security and law enforcement officers, professionals and buyers with international security solutions providers and manufacturers. After a successful ISNR opening in 2016, Red Event Services in Dubai was awarded with the contract in 2018. The final storyboard was approved in December 2017 after a lengthy bidding process and various changes, before content and technical production started immediately. The story of the show, called The Brave, centred around a family that has been separated in a fictional, war-torn city, before being reunited through the efforts of relief teams and search and rescue operations. A big part of the theatrical side was filmed content, created by Film Director Rodrigo Kirchner. As the filming determined
the set for the theatrical live production (the existing film set needed to be recreated inside ADNEC ICC), the team of Red Events Operations Director, Marcin Banazsevksi, and Production Coordinators, Abdul Rehman Shaikh and Farhanah Magumpara, had just 4 days off site and 4 days on site to build a 60m by 7m stage set with trap doors aligning to the LED back wall. They were also responsible for the VIP deck build and all prop preparation for the event. Banazsevski said: “Since me and my team built the set 2 years back for the same opening show, there weren’t too many challenges. That said, my prop builders, set painters and carpenters have done a phenomenal job.” Production Director, Stefan Wieland, gathered the production team and developed the AV aspects of the theatrical play, putting the creatives wishes and requirements of Executive Producer, Arif Ebrahim, and Action Director, Stephen Sinclair.
Wieland reported: “The biggest challenge was the sliding LED walls - just the centre LED had 36 tonnes of rigging alone - and getting the set as close as possible and aligned in front of the screens. Furthermore, the sheer size of the pixel space created by using hi-res LED screen was a challenge, it took us several sessions to create a technically (and financially) viable solution. We changed from standard HD to 4K playout from Ventuz and throughout the distribution and LED Controllers.” Executive Producer, Arif Ebrahim, and Event Director, Fadi Akel, declared that the work put in by the Red Events team was key to The Brave’s success: “Everyone worked with passion and went 2 extra miles to make this show happen. I am really proud of the show and the people behind it. Our client, all involved government departments and all cast & crew had such a smile on their faces after every performance - this is exactly why we love our job.”
Outstanding Event Production of the Year
SHORTLIST RedFestDXB by Done Events
RedFestDXB returned for its 5th anniversary this February. Taking place at the centrally located Media City Amphitheatre, the highly-anticipated annual music festival drew its largest crowd to date across the 2 days. The events stage played host to a selection of international artist including Bebe Rexha, Russ, Craig David, The
Chainsmokers and Kesha. Although it was an extended set by leading international DJ Marshmello, which grabbed the most praise post-event. RedFestDXB - owned by Arab Media Group’s Done Events and executed in conjunction with sister company Virgin Radio Dubai - has quickly established itself as
one of the regions leading events. This year saw over 24,000 attendees and the festival will again return to the same venue next February. Done Events are also responsible for DXBLaughs - the region’s leading comedy series - and the Blended Music Festival which this year saw The Backstreet Boys sell-out upon the festivals return.

Outstanding Event Production of the Year
Galactica by Global Event Management
Curated by the team at Global Event Management, Galactica delivered a unique immersive event experience to 500 guests. Transforming the opulent theatrical interior of Music Hall into an interstellar departure lounge and ship bridge dining experience with live entertainment and a theatrical show. The tone was set at the entrance with a custom inflated tunnel, futuristic LED pixel animation and infinity mirrors. Not to mention the roaming entertainment with walkabout characters in highly detailed costume and makeup further enhanced the atmosphere. The decadent lobby of Music Hall was transformed with white carpet, drapes into a departure lounge - featuring custom
interactive projection games, a retro arcade and a DJ podium. A full technical production package included Claypaky B-EYES and Void Acoustics audio systems to enhance the future vibe. The main room became a casual dining experience, along with full beverage service and a theatrical show. The venues in-house lighting and sound being further enhanced with addition screens, media server and lighting to create a hybrid digital, scenic scape simulating the bridge of the ship. The scenic and video design pushed out from the confines of the traditional proscenium arch bringing the action to the audience. The custom tiered main stage with a 10m diameter circle provided a great playing space that later became a dancefloor for
guests. Custom media content and soundtrack narrated an interstellar cruise where alien performers where ‘beamed’ on board to showcase a variety of entertainment acts from opera to levitation, acrobatics and dance. The dinner theatre show rolled into a live band set and then a DJ set. The key to successful production is the engagement of the audience, the desire to capture interest and deliver something memorable. Through a balance of advanced production technologies, curated video and audio content and a spectacular live show the team at Global Event Management where again able to deliver beyond client expectations.
TPMEA AV INDUSTRY RECOGNITION AWARD
TPMEA AV INDUSTRY RECOGNITION AWARD Winner: Stephen Lakin, Protec Nominees: Martin Lubach Jinesh Nair
WINNER:
STEPHEN LAKIN, PROTEC “My career in this industry goes back a few decades. I started in the entertainment business in 1978, when I formed my first company Viewplan in 1979. I grew Viewplan PLC and then floated it onto the UK Stock Exchange in 1985. By 1987 I had 850 staff working in the company. I eventually sold Viewplan to a larger public company in the UK. “My next company, Gearhouse, was started from scratch in 1989 and I grew it to become the world’s largest event rental company - with nearly 2,000 staff based in over 40 companies throughout the world. I floated Gearhouse onto the UK’s Stock Exchange in 1995. “By 1999 I’d left Gearhouse, went into semi-retirement and moved permanently to the Middle East. I was soon itching for something new and I started my next company, Protec - Production Technology at the end of 1999 in response to a request from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia to produce an amazing opening ceremony for their newest skyscraper, the Al Faisaliah Tower. Since then, Protec has grown considerably and is today one of the largest full service event technical and staging solutions companies in the world. “Based in Dubai for the last 25 years, I have been avidly promoting the UAE as the leading destination for events while growing Protec into one of the largest full service event technical production companies in the world, certainly the largest in the Middle East. I have worked on hundreds of major events including the opening launch of Dubai Media City, Dubai Shopping Festival,
various National Day celebrations and other prestigious events across the Middle East in my company’s 19 year history here in the Middle East. “It looks like retirement is not something I can manage, not when I love what I do. I also consider myself very privileged to have worked on some of the greatest shows on earth including various Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games’ opening and closing ceremonies. I was the producer of the highly successful opening ceremonies for IDEX 2013, 2015 and 2017 - possibly one of the most complex but also one of the most exciting shows I’ve worked on. “I feel privileged to have had 40 years
in this business, and it was especially wonderful to have this work honoured at the inaugural TPMEA Awards. A very special thanks to TPMEA for selecting me amongst the nominees, each of whom have made great contributions to building the industry, and turning it into what it is today. “I am exceptionally pleased, honoured and humbled to have won the TPMEA AV Industry Recognition Award. It is a terrific industry to be a part of; it’s an industry full of incredible people who share my passion for what we do. The award ceremony itself was well-organised and an exceptional night – everyone was in high spirits and I’m already looking forward to next year!”

TPMEA AV INDUSTRY RECOGNITION AWARD
THE SHORTLIST Martin Lubach “Having worked in this industry since 1984 in many roles, from Product Designer to Lighting Operator to General Manager, I have seen the technology grow and develop over the years and worked with many people at different levels. I first met Mark Brown when I worked with him on the Starlaser project in the late ‘80s. In 2013 he asked me if I would be interested in running eclipse Staging Services in Dubai. I instantly felt that it was a great opportunity to apply my skills and grow a company that had a great feel and philosophy within it. The vision was to bring
structure, standards and a clearly-defined business objective to be the trusted rental company of choice within the GGC, delivering exceptional live events, safely. “Most importantly, my core values revolve around creating a culture of treating people well and looking after their welfare and development and believing in and inspiring them so that they can achieve their best. If you treat people with respect, they will reward you with loyalty. I have had the pleasure to work alongside an extremely talented team at eclipse and am honoured to have been nominated for this award.”
Jinesh Nair “Mediapro International was first created in Dubai in 2000. I’m glad I came to the region as it has pushed me to excel with my skills and develop new concepts. Lately, we have invested in an automation division and have designed sets with these technical advances. “The events industry in Dubai & in the UAE region is always evolving; visual entertainment has seen a big increase and event openings now have
more than an MC on stage! The progress is great to see, and has led to lot of investments on our part. Recent events we have been involved in include The AR Rehman show, RedFestDXB and SOLE DXB. “At Mediapro International, we are always looking towards to future. Our focus is going to continue in programmed show solutions with automation playing an important role.”
