WELCOME MARK GORDON DIRECTOR SLEEP & EAT
On behalf of the entire Sleep & Eat team I’d like to extend to you a very warm welcome to the show. This year, we’re excited to invite you to explore the theme of “Social FlexAbility”. In a digital world the opportunity for humans to interact face-to-face has become scarcer despite our primal social needs. As a result, in the future it is the hospitality design industry that will be in the vanguard of bringing people back together, whatever the individual’s personal social preference. Over the next two days we invite you to “be more social” and explore this theme with us. Whether it is throughout our famous Guestroom, Bar and Restaurant Sets or our amazing Conference programme, you will have ample opportunity to gain inspiration in this area. Whilst you are here don’t forget to socialise yourself with contacts old and new at our striking Sleeper Bar, designed by Michaelis Boyd. In addition, new this year is The Hub designed by Wilson Associates, the co-working heart of Sleep & Eat, as well as our MEGRE INTERIORS-designed VIP Lounge, both of which will be social nerve centres. You can’t focus a show on becoming more sociable without creating more opportunities for your visitors themselves. As well as organising the biggest networking event in the European hospitality design industry’s calendar with our Tuesday late night opening, new for this year will be our RIBA London networking event (Tuesday Evening); the NEWH industry breakfast (Wednesday morning); and our Networking Hour initiative in conjunction with TopHotelDesign (Tuesday & Wednesday afternoons). Whilst here make sure you also check out our fabulous Sleep & Eat Conference programme which across two days brings together the biggest hospitality design influencers around. Speakers this year include CEOs Amar Lalvani of Standard International, Josh Wyatt from NeueHouse and Christoph Hoffmann of 25hours Hotels, as well as a stellar line-up of experts. Finally, our biggest ever 160-strong exhibition showcase features a myriad of top brands, both familiar and new, presenting a wide range of new products that are sure to inspire. From furniture to bathroom ware, from lighting to wallpaper, you are sure to find something that will help shape your designs for years to come. So, thank you once again for visiting Sleep & Eat. Keep reading to find out more that awaits you at the largest gathering of the European hospitality design industry around. I look forward to seeing you around the show.

GUESTROOM HAT DESIGN “We have imagined a bedroom space that can breathe with users’ needs and moods, that they can control and re-create. Hotels are becoming used to integrating social hubs in their public areas; we see an exciting opportunity in applying the same philosophy to guestrooms. When we have flexibility to rearrange the space around us, we achieve balance and feel peaceful; it is an approach where quality of space wins over size. As Frank Lloyd Wright said: ‘Space is the breath of art’.” - Anne-Marie Sabatier & Flavie Deram HAT Design
HAT Design’s quest is to design destinations - a new experience of guest wellbeing, guiding and mothering each project to mould its unique identity. The studio is inspired by life, generations, cultures, innovations and diversities. They care about environments and emotions associated therewith, and are committed to value the place and build the ideal scenario around each guest.

We are taking a biophilic approach and using lighting to enhance wellbeing through day and night and are also developing a Flexibility app to allow guests to personalise their experience. This will be New Luxury – sophisticated and elegant in its simplicity, a sustainable design that creates a world around each guest.” - The team at Maria Tibblin & Co. Maria Tibblin’s guestroom “Tradition of the Future” will focus on the ultimate personal and genuine space for each and every guest. RESTAURANT NAME ARCHITECTURE “Our Set will explore the power of design to personalise a social experience through a spatial one. It will focus on adaptable functionality and, at its heart, a table designed in a continuous plane will become the plane for social interaction. This will define the space, shape its use and determine varying levels of social stimulation, allowing users to activate the experience of their choice according to where they sit. We want visitors to ask themselves: where do I sit?” - Nathalie Rozencwajg NAME architecture A global practice with strong local connections, NAME architecture has distinctive expertise in culturally significant projects and crafting beautiful solutions that maximise the architectural potential of buildings and spaces.

BAR SPACEINVADER “We asked ourselves: what’s the biggest barrier to Social Flexibility in a bar? Our answer was the bar itself! So, we are creating a bar without a bar which, through layout and design, becomes a space where conversations are developed. Adaptability leading to interaction with the environment, flexibility empowering the individual to use the space as suits them, design enhancing service and promoting human interaction.” - Izzy Eling SpaceInvader In order to develop the traditional bar as it stands today Space Invader will try to establish what needs changing. With the rise in traction of social media, face to face interaction has become rare. Conversations are being left to the keypad, with the notion of meeting people in a bar being relevant to only previous generations. But what if a bar’s design could enhance these conversations and bring them to the future, not leaving them in the past?

SLEEPER BAR DESIGNED ANEW EACH YEAR, THE ANNUAL SLEEPER BAR PROVIDES A SPACE ON THE EXHIBITION FLOOR TO NETWORK AND RELAX.
The industry’s favourite pop-up bar, the Sleeper Bar, is created this year by Michaelis Boyd, the London and New York based architecture studio recognised for its sophisticated, design-led approach and emphasis on sustainable and environmentally conscious materials and building techniques. For this year’s bar, Michaelis Boyd has drawn its inspiration from “The Man Who Planted Trees”, a short story by Jean Giono which celebrates the power of the natural environment. Working primarily in timber, the bar will be a study in sustainability; investigating the afterlife of the material through scale, layering, adaptability and recycling leading to creating a space that will cater to all walks of life, adjusting to the needs of each individual, making the bar a rich experience for each visitor. “We are both really looking forward to designing the Sleeper Bar,” say Alex Michaelis and Tim Boyd. “On our previous visits to Sleep & Eat we have been very impressed by the strength of the designs and the themes and we are excited to be adding our own spin this year. The theme of FlexAbility means we will be designing a dynamic and social hub for all this year’s visitors.”

THE HUB RELAX, SOCIALISE OR CO-WORK IN THE HUB, A NEW SPACE FOR CONNECTION. Join us at The Hub on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th from 14.00-15.00 to network with your community and discuss and debate selected topics within hospitality design, hosted by industry leading names.
The Hub, designed by Wilson Associates, is an exciting new addition to this year’s show. Responding to this year’s theme of ‘Social FlexAbility’, The Hub will be the place for co-working and networking, for quietly catching up with emails, or simply relaxing away from the busy exhibition floor. The inspiration for the space is a circle, a closed curve where not only do people come together in a shared experience but all the elements inside have been, or will be, recycled. “The space will be a lounge where everyone is welcome to convene and collaborate. A circle is a powerful thing as it evokes a sense of connection, equality, equilibrium, balance, unity and safety. Our goal is for the stand to be completely sustainable; every product will have been used, or will be used again. As a circle represents a cycle, we want to be able to maintain the geometry of recycling.” - Juan Carlos Rodriguez Artigas Design Director, Wilson Associates
Networking Hours at The Hub are hosted by TopHotelDesign. Places are on a first come first served basis.

CONFERENCE TUESDAY 10:30 - 11:15 LONDON IS JUST THE BEGINNING The much anticipated opening of the year, The Standard London, has paved the way for a robust international expansion for the brand. By quadrupling its footprint to 20 properties in the coming years, what are the challenges ahead? Is it still possible to run the company as a platform for creativity? Will rooms with no windows actually work? Is the strength of the brand a clientele that sees value in a specific lifestyle and is that enough to fuel the aggressive growth?
AMAR LALVANI CEO, STANDARD INTERNATIONAL Amar Lalvani has built Standard International into one of the most innovative hospitality companies in the world, expanding the pipeline of new Standard hotels globally, acquiring a majority stake in Bunkhouse Group and launching a disruptive distribution platform, One Night. Amar has been involved in the hotel business for 20 years having started his career in 1997 with Starwood Capital Group, where he participated in the $14 billion acquisition of ITT Sheraton. www.stndintl.com

CONFERENCE TUESDAY 11:30 - 12:15 PEOPLE DRIVEN vs. DATA DRIVEN The hybridisation of different accommodation structures has left the notion of a traditional hotel far behind. Nowadays, in order to win, lobbies need to be engaging and inviting with free and fast WiFi, rooms overly functional, food and drink concepts blending into all room and non-room areas, the list goes on. But what does that mean operationally? How must brands adapt themselves to manage all of the above, efficiently and within a reasonable timeframe? In a data driven world, do we still rely on our teams and human interaction to deliver on the brand promise?
DALE MACPHEE General Manager, Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh Dale Macphee joined Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian in January 2013, where she oversees 241 guestrooms and suites, eight banqueting suites, two restaurants, and the only Guerlain Spa within the UK. www.waldorfastoria.hilton.com

He is the co-founder of Ormeau Baths - Belfast, a co-working space seeking to address the opportunities of the city, as well as it’s activation of the Tech and digital scene. CONFERENCE TUESDAY 12:30 - 13:15 A HOLISTIC ANSWER TO URBAN LIVING Almost everyone needs human interaction and there is much compelling evidence that the overuse of digital devices can lead to a sense of loneliness, poor selfesteem and depression, as well as the interruption of sleep patterns and the disruption of concentration. How can hospitality design combat loneliness and modern urban isolation whilst considering the wellbeing of the residents and members both from a physical and physiological health perspective and also from a sociological and psychological one?
MATTHEW GRZYWINSKI Architect / Principal, Grzwinski + Pons Matthew Grzywinski is an architect, designer and co-founder of his eponymous firm Grzywinski+Pons Architects. CONFERENCE TUESDAY 16:00 - 16:45 BEDROOMS ARE BORING Most of the fun (or at least the shareable part) of staying at a hotel takes place outside the room. This is where Instagram shots get taken, menus get scrutinised and drink lists perused. What are the hot new concepts that travellers crave for? Have hotels finally caught up with independent restaurants and bars by offering the same amount of social excitement and post-worthy content? What other food and drink related experiences can hotels offer to entice the modern traveller?

CONFERENCE WEDNESDAY 10:30 - 11:15 THE TALES OF A STORYTELLER-HOTELIER Five years ago, when 25Hours was just six properties strong, the visionary behind the concept, Christoph Hoffmann, was adamant about two things - having fun and creating a powerful brand rather than a hotel group or chain. Has this romantic idea of hospitality changed over the years? How has scaling, moving beyond European borders and partnering with Accor affected the core essence of 25Hours? The charismatic CEO will discuss the ups and downs of his journey capturing moments of joy from the circus, fairytale castles, Congolese sappers and wisened seadogs.
CHRISTOPH HOFFMANN CEO, 25Hours Hotel Company Christoph Hoffmann, CEO and board member of the 25hours Hotel Company, oversees the hotel group’s development and expansion, which he founded in 2005 with partners Stephan Gerhard, Ardi Goldman and Kai Hollmann. He evaluates hotel locations and, with the help of local partners, develops tailored hotels for city nomads, daydreamers and night-owls looking for an urban sprawl to unwind in. www.25hours-hotels.com

CONFERENCE WEDNESDAY 11:30 - 12:15 UNDER: HOSPITALITY UNDERWATER At the southernmost point of the Norwegian coastline lies Under Europe’s first underwater restaurant that also doubles up as a research centre for marine life. The combined efforts of the design practice and the engineers into underwater architecture are truly noteworthy, pushing the boundaries of hospitality experiences below the waves. Far from being an aquarium for touristy expeditions, the magic of the North Sea wildlife captivates with all its awe, rain or shine. When the land is not enough - how do we design and engineer for the next frontier?

CONFERENCE WEDNESDAY 15:00 - 15:45 ABOVE: DESIGNING FOR SPACE Fifty years ago, human beings stepped on the moon for the first time. An advocate for an unrestrained and intuitive approach to design and life in general, Johannes will draw on his extensive cross-disciplinary experience including serving as the Chief Creative of Bang & Olufsen.

CONFERENCE WEDNESDAY 16:00 - 16:45 GUILT FREE EXPERIENCES These days it is a struggle to find a brand without sustainability as one of its values. It has become a given. But what really sets a true eco hotel apart from that of a regular one? Is it the design, the service, the location, the credentials or something more authentic at its core? As the experience economy keeps growing, the quest for unique and unprecedented hotel products follows suit. At a price point that demands luxury, how can we still have a guilt-free experience?
