WELCOME to the 15th edition of the UK Festival Awards! Once again, it’s time to look back over another incredible year for UK festivals, and acknowledge the vision, expertise and effort that powers the greatest festival industry in the world. In comparison to those in recent memory, it has been a relatively smooth but dynamic year for British festivals, with ticket sales holding strong and the Brits demonstrating their love with another huge response to the Awards’ public vote. What’s more, innovation continues to happen on all fronts – from more impressive production to stronger collective action on sustainability and social justice. All in all, the UK continues to be a world leader in festivals, and that’s what we’re celebrating this evening. Congratulations to tonight’s winners and all of those shortlisted – all well deserved. This evening is about everyone involved in the UK festival industry. We’re all part of something unique and very special that lights up the lives of millions each year. Cheers! The UK Festival Awards Team

THE AWARDS The Outstanding Contribution to Festivals Award Dedicated to an individual whose personal vision and energy has propelled the entire festival marketplace forward in a dynamic, creative and positive way.

SARAH NULTY The UK Festival Awards is proud to announce that this year’s Outstanding Contribution to Festivals Award will be presented posthumously to Tramlines Festival Director, Sarah Nulty. Sarah Nulty first came to Sheffield as a student in 1999. Having always said that she chose to study in the city just so that she could party at local nightclub, Gatecrasher, she had already landed a job there by the early nineties, and by 2013, she was Festival Director of Sheffield’s biggest music festival. Sarah always knew that she wanted to ‘put on parties’. She was instrumental in the launch of Tramlines in 2009, coordinating venues and handling bookings, aand later working in the commercial department. In her Festival Director role, Sarah led Tramlines through its toughest and most pivotal times – from the introduction of a ticketed model after huge cuts in local funding, to completely revamping the festival’s multi-venue format to meet fans’ demands for bigger line-ups. Sarah’s parting gift to Tramlines was to revamp it into a single, greenfield site for its 10th anniversary at the 30,000-capacity Hillsborough Park. Although Sarah never saw it, Tramlines considered it to be ‘undoubtedly, the best edition yet’. Sarah dedicated her whole working career to Sheffield and the events industry. She managed the citywide Sheffield Makes Music event in conjunction

with BBC Music Day and Sheffield University, sat on the board of the Association Of Independent Festivals, and was appointed the First Executive In Residence for the Events Management group at Hallam University, amongst other mentoring roles. Her work across Sheffield spanned nearly two decades and led to massive benefits for the city. While Tramlines delivered a huge economic boost to local business, Sarah also helped Feature Walls – Sheffield’s week-long street art festival that showcased homegrown talent – come to fruition. In addition, she curated content for the Spiegeltent at Festival Of The Mind, and project managed IKEA’s Wonderful Every Day Tour of Sheffield on various events and installations across the city. Sarah leaves behind a strong legacy in Tramlines, the festival industry, and the inspiration and encouragement she’s given to young women who aim to follow in her footsteps. Her lifelong contribution was recognised by Sheffield City Council with a permanent memorial on Devonshire Green – the site of the original Tramlines Main Stage – and a posthumous Civic Award from the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Magid Magid. It is for all of the above reasons that we are proud to present this award in Sarah’s honour during the UK Festival Awards 2018.
