Here’s to 2019!

Welcome to the 16th edition of the UK Festival Awards! Once again, it’s time to look back over another incredible year for UK festivals, and acknowledge the vision, expertise and effort that powers the greatest festival industry in the world. Although 2019 hasn’t been without its challenges – from rising artist fees to severe weather – the public’s love of festivals has never been stronger, demonstrated in the 55,000 votes we (or rather you) received this year. Congratulations to tonight’s winners and all of those shortlisted – all well-deserved. This evening is about everyone involved in the UK festival industry. We’re all part of something unique and very special that lights up the lives of millions each year. Cheers! The UK Festival Awards team

37% of festival goers were concerned or very concerned about safety at the festivals they visited

It's great! Helps to create a safer festival. It is good to recognise that people are going to do it so may as well provide an option for people to check out what they are taking to ensure it isn't something they weren't expecting.

festivals have begun to offer free drug testing facilities onsite, What DO THEY THINK?

After recent festival deaths from drugs it seems a safer way for those involved

HOW SHOULD WE tackle climate change?

Security should be better at picking this up not advocating it

Is a good idea in theory but I have seen people be followed back to their campsite and later have police have shown up to confiscate and even sometimes eject the person/persons from the festival.

This is s great idea, I don't do drugs. However I feel if people choose to then this facility at least give people the chance to do so safely

What do THEYthink about... festivals pledging to achieve a 50/50 gender balance in their line-ups?

I think this is a good idea but only if the acts are of a good standard. It is not worth losing out on good acts simply to make the gender balance.

I prefer line ups based on talent and popularity rather than gender.

I agree with it and believe it's important that festivals try to achieve it, it's highly commendable that they hold themselves up to be accountable like this.

It is essential that all festival line-ups are gender balanced. It puts me off going to a festival if there are not enough women or bands of ethnic diversity on the line-up

I think we shouldn't force representation when it comes to talent, we should judge musical acts as being genderless when judging who to add to a set list or line up. Forcing representation means others miss out.

THE AWARDS The Outstanding Contribution to Festivals Award Dedicated to an individual whose personal vision and energy has propelled the entire festival marketplace forward in a dynamic, creative and positive way.

FIONA MEASHAM The UK Festival Awards is proud to announce that the winner of this year’s Outstanding Contribution to Festivals Award is Professor Fiona Measham. Throughout her 30-year academic career – beginning at King’s College, Cambridge and most recently as Chair in Criminology at the University of Liverpool – Fiona’s work has been shaped by her passion for music and dance culture. Never one to be trapped in the ivory towers of academia, her academic work has always been action-oriented, reflecting her lifelong commitment to equality and social justice causes. Amongst her achievements, she has served on the Government’s Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, David Nutt’s Drugs Science Committee, as well as the Lib Dems’ expert panel on cannabis regulation, and also acted as the key expert witness in the fight to keep Fabric nightclub open. Her research interest in how the interface of dance music culture and criminal justice impacts the health and wellbeing of young people ultimately led to her establishing the harm reduction service, The Loop. This was the first organisation to offer drug safety testing services in the UK – at the Secret Garden Party and Kendal Calling festivals in 2016, then spreading to many more over the next four summers. Individuals submit a sample to the service without fear of legal sanction, have it tested by The Loop’s team of graduate chemists, and then have the test results given to them by a healthcare professional in the context

of a 15-minute healthcare consultation. This knowledge has allowed thousands of individuals to make more informed choices about their drug use at festivals and to minimise the risks involved. Evidence gathered by The Loop has demonstrated reduced drug-related harm after the service has been implemented, and substantial quantities of adulterated or mis-sold drugs have been identified and destroyed. The Loop is a service that addresses the reality of drug use in a pragmatic, non-judgmental and compassionate way. It has the power to save lives, and at a time of record drug-related deaths nationally, it could not be more urgently needed. All the more impressive is that Fiona and her team of over 200 Loop volunteers are all unpaid, and yet were able to develop and implement the service with strong local stakeholder support. This is despite a profoundly hostile national political context, more often dominated by hysteria and scaremongering than the kind of measured evidenced based pragmatism that has characterised Fiona’s work. Through this remarkable effort, Fiona and The Loop have not only helped keep young people safe, but also changed the national discourse – amongst festival promoters, police, public health officials, the media, and in Westminster. Policy on drugs and health has evolved in a positive direction; away from the failed zero tolerance approaches of the past, towards a reality-based focus on health, leisure and harm reduction.
