Zapfino is a calligraphic typeface designed for Linotype. It is designed by one of the world’s greatest living typeface designers. Created by Hermann Zapf, the Zapfino font is not only exceptionally beautiful, it is also remarkably versatile. It can be used for everything from invitations to advertising copy to product packaging. The Zapfino font's abundant and elegant swash and alternate characters also help to make each word set in it appear unique and handwritten. The earliest incarnation of the Zapfino font began when Zapf returned to an old lettering design he had created in the mid-1940's using a Somerville pen. At the time the design was created, the technology for duplicating a design as delicate and fluid as the Zapfino font in metal type did not exist. For a long while the design remained only on paper. Eventually type technology caught up with designers such as Zapf. In 1993 Zapf, along with David Siegel and Gino Lee, began to digitize the Zapfino alphabets which were ultimately released in 1998. Consisting of four basic alphabets and numerous alternates, the Zapfino family can be utilized in a variety of combinations that reflect the uniqueness of handwritten text. In 1999, the Type Directors Club of New York presented the Linotype Zapfino font with the prestigious TDC Type Design Award. http://www.vancleef-grafischontwerp.nl/2011/11/cliche-lettertypes-zapfinoduurdoenerij/
