Encouraging the use of local materials for the renovation Finding different solutions for the organization of the interiors while expanding the refurbishment: the semi public areas will host a variety of functions including the wine making rooms, to the fish and vegetable (and other locally sourced products) storages Implement the network of solar panels for each house, in order to start reaching energetic independence and allow the use of more contemporary comforts

The restoring of vineyards and terraces gets more consistent, involving local companies to support the project, such as the azienda Agricola Monterossina A Scià and allows the production of wine and subsequent income The increasing production of wine and grapes gives the opportunity to join wine-making cooperatives and generate income for the local workers

NEW ACTIVITIES

Introduction of a new type of tourism which promotes active participation in the rebirth of Monesteroli Creation of new huts on the beach to store boats used for fishing during the warmer months

Thanks to public and regional funding, involving associations like FAI and the Regione Liguria itself, some abandoned houses will be acquired and then restored The involvement of the current home owners creates a connection with the place and is fundamental to pass down its intangible culture and guide the first new users The acquired houses will be restored using local materials, and the internal spaces will be reorganized to host public (kitchens, canteens etc) and private (dwellings) functions

The addition of local trees and pergole along the existing staircase will provide shade and consolidate the terrain, to improve the safety Get in touch with a local company involved in the restoration of the historical drywalls of Liguria, using the public funding by the region, to restore the terraces and allow future cultivation

Creating an artificial piazza with local, light materials to gather people in an open space that faces the sea, offering an amazing view under the shade of pergole, and that will host social activities throughout the days and seasons

NEW ACTIVITIES The greater overall stability of the site also allows for the introduction of passive, traditional tourism Implement didactic laboratories, making Monesteroli a stable base for the in-depth study of the Cinque Terre Park Connect with the Laboratori Partecipati initiative to promote further restoration of the terraces, involving tourists and volunteers as a didactic occasion

The acropolis represents the very entrance of Monesteroli, it introduces the theme of framing nature and human action on the territory. In the acropolis the frame turns into many architectural solutions that are related to the visual perception of the sea and the landscape. This operation is made by emphasising and underlining particular views both in the exterior, using open-air frames, and in the interior, with specific openings.

The agorà will be the central, social core of the intervention, the open space that will host activities and gatherings as it was in ancient times. In the agorà the frame turns into a pergola, creating new spaces for the socialization under the shadow of this light architectural gesture, completed by nature. To support socialization and community life, a square will be added, to create a new strong meeting point.

The chora is the place of closest relation with nature, along with the sea. Here the most vernacular, agrarian functions linked to cultivations and wine harvest take place, merging with dwellings. The frame here takes part into the productive activities and into the restoring of age old traditions. It turns into a support for the grapevines and other different cultures, necessary for the income and the economical independence of those living in Monesteroli and its nature. A’

The thalassa is the final destination of the journey. Once more the frame changes configuration, this time turning into a pier-like structure enclosing part of the water and the sky reflected in it. In the Talassa, the frame becomes a walkway over the water, which frames the sea and the reflection of the sky and creates new points of view of the outstanding landscape.
