It is all set up for the Aurora Houn’ Dawg football team this season. The Dawgs returned 15 seniors, they have the largest and most experienced line in the conference and this is their year to shine. On July 17, Head coach Rick Scholten unexpectedly stepped down, resigning from the Aurora school district to take a job selling insurance. While Scholten left for a better opportunity, his timing left the district scrambling for a replacement. The district did not have to look far for its next coach, promoting recently-hired assistant coach Kale Kilgo to the job. Kilgo had been at Ozark High School for the past five seasons. His experience in Ozark included

being an assistant offensive line coach for two seasons, a defensive line coach for three seasons and the assistant special teams coordinator for three seasons. During his time at Ozark, he has helped coach Tigers’ teams to the second round of the playoffs twice, and once to the state semifinals. Kilgo insists the season is still salvageable, but the players are going to have to put in double the effort in order to pull together. “We had a lot thrown at us in a short amount of time,” Kilgo said. “ I believe that these kids will rise to the challenge. Football is like life in the fact you have to meet adversity head on. We are going to do just that — meet this challenge head-on, and together.” One blessing for Kilgo and

the Houn’ Dawgs is the overall maturity of the returning players. Aurora has 16 starters and 19 total letter winners returning to its roster. The Houn’ Dawgs averaged 19.7 points per game last season. They are a run-first, optionoriented offense that averaged 162.5 yards rushing and 64.9 yards passing a season ago. Top signal caller Payton Evans, a 6-2, 185-pound junior, returns under center for the Houn’ Dawgs. Evans was 52-of-135 passing last season (39 percent) for 679 yards and nine touchdowns. Chris Dettling, a 5-10, 220-pound senior running back, is the most experienced ball carrier back for the Houn’ Dawgs. Dettling rushed for 451 yards on 82 carries (5.5 yards per carry) as a junior

Dawgs with six touchdowns. Billy Meredith, a 5-10, 160-pound slot receiver, carried the ball 33 times for 183 yards and four touchdowns. The Houn’ Dawgs feature one of the tallest receiving tandems in the Big 8 Conference with 6-6, 195-pound Logan Bader and 6-2, 165-pound, Skylar Cahill. The duo teamed up last season to catch 38 passes for 514 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Aurora returns all-state defensive end Mason Husmann. Husmann, a 6-5, 230-pound defensive end, is getting major attention from colleges of all levels. In the last two seasons, he has totaled 178 tackles with 17 sacks, including 12 sacks last season. The Houn’ Dawgs’ Bader and Tanner Schnelle form a formidable linebacker duo.

Bader collected 55 solo tackles and assisted in 22 others stops, along with one interception, as a junior. Schnelle a 6-1, 210-pound senior, recorded 80 solo tackles, plus another 41 assisted tackles, with one sack. Meredith and Caelum Friggle will man the corner spots on defense. Friggle was credited with 26 solo tackles last season and six

assisted stops. He also picked off one pass. Meredith made 45 solo stops while assisting on 20 more. He led the team with four interceptions. Aurora opens the season on Aug. 21 at Cassville. The home opener for the Houn’ Dawgs is slated for Aug. 28 with McDonald County. Aurora and Mt. Vernon will play a rare Saturday game on Sept. 9 in what both school are hoping becomes and annual tradition.

was unforgettable for the Monett Cubs. For the second time in the last three seasons, they advanced to the Class 3 semifinal and thrilled the local fan base. However,

the

celebration

after the season was tempered a bit with the departure of 22 lettermen and 16 starters, due to graduation. To ad insult to injury, Chad Depée and Jim Genzler, head coach and defensive coordinator, respectively, were plucked away by the Ozark School District. To fill the void, Monett went south and pulled former assistant coach Derrek Uhl away from rival Cassville. Uhl then persuaded Kyle Wood, a top defensive assistant, to defect from Cassville to lead Monett’s defense.

Vernon finished with a 3-7 record last season, and according to Cox, the record does not reflect the whole story. “We got better every week and were playing our best football at the end of the season,” Cox said. “Our senior class played for their third head coach in their four years of high school. And, with only four seniors, we were a young team that gained valuable experience as the season went along. Our biggest challenge was weathering the storm of our early schedule.” This year the Mountaineers return eight starters and 23 lettermen. With a full year under Cox’s leadership and systems, the future looks bright for Mt. Vernon. “I am really excited for this
