What are pharming scams? ● Pharming scams are online fraud or spam that involves malicious code and fake websites. Malicious code is updated on your computer or server by cybercriminals. Without your knowledge or consent, the code automatically redirects you to bogus websites. ● According to Faisal Abidi, pharming scams aim to trick you into providing personal information, such as payment card information or passwords, on fake websites. Cybercriminals could then use your personal data to execute financial fraud and identity theft.

How do pharming scams work?

Pharming exploits the mechanics of Internet browsing.

The way internet browsing works is that the sequence of letters that make up an internet address, such as www.google.com, must be converted into an IP address by a DNS server before the connection can be established.

DNS servers are accountable for converting domain names into IP addresses. While domain names are used to identify websites, IP addresses identify their physical location. Your web browser then connects to the server with this IP address.

A DNS cache is created when you visit a website, so you don't have to visit the server every time you visit the site. Pharming can corrupt both the DNS cache and the DNS server.

Different types of pharming scams? ● Malware based pharming In an email, a hacker may send malicious code that instals a virus on a user's computer. While speaking with Faisal Abidi, this malicious or fraudulent code modifies the computer's hosts file to redirect traffic away from its intended target and toward a fake website instead. Malware-based pharming is a type of pharming scam. ● DNS server poisoning The hacker may employ a technique known as DNS poisoning. DNS stands for "Domain Name System." Pharming scammers can modify the DNS table on a server, causing multiple users to inadvertently visit fake websites instead of legitimate ones. Pharming scammers can use fake websites to install viruses on users' computers or to collect personal and financial information for use in identity theft.

Warning signs of pharming scams

● A vulnerable connection. If the address line of your website says "HTTP" instead of "HTTPS," may corrupt the website. ● A website that does not appear to be correct. If your site has spelling mistakes, an unfamiliar font or color scheme, or otherwise doesn't appear legitimate, it probably isn't.

Use a reliable DNS server Only follow links that begin with HTTPS Do not open files or select links from unknown sources. Check URLs for typos Avoid suspicious websites Avoid deals that appear too good to be true Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible Change the default setting of your wi-fi router Use robust anti-virus and anti-malware solutions and keep them up to date
