INTRODUCTION Tartine Cafe is a popular farm-to-table breakfast spot and cafe in San Luis Obispo. Sourced entirely from local farms, Tartine Cafe offers a fresh and organic breakfast menu. We are located in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo, with a quaint indoor and outdoor seating. The nouveau branding of Tartine Cafe focuses on capturing the cafe’s authenticity, freshness and sense of community, as well as elevating the cafe to a modern and refined dining spot. Tartine Cafe supports the local community by partnering with small farmers and businesses within the the San Luis Obispo county to offer the best and freshest foods directly to the customers’ tables. The environment created within the cafe also aims to foster that sense of community, through friendly servers who like to converse with customers, as well as open spaces and seating that encourage intermingling. Tartine Cafe serves breakfast foods that are also inclusive to vegans, vegetarians, pescetarians, gluten-free, etc. The branding also aims at conveying the natural and organic aspects that Tartine Cafe offers, whether in print or through the cafe’s home-like environment. All branding material, print or physical, thus, aim to further convey and uphold Tartine Cafe’s slogan: Breakfast. Community. Culture. It is essential to uphold all the specifications and requirements in the pages to come, and to hold the values of Tartine Cafe in the highest regard. It is also important for the materials created to be inclusive and accessible to all community members and be true to Tartine Cafe’s aims of creating a healthy community through organic and delicious breakfast foods. PRIMARY LOGOTYPE Appropriate uses
PRIMARY LOGOTYPE
Tartine Cafe’s logo is elegant and simple to represent the cafe as a refined dining spot that is inclusive and accessible to all community members. The primary logotype and the slogan are not placed within the same design.
The primary logo is made up of two colors, Cool Gray and Canary Yellow (Page 19). The primary logo is to be used on any important documents or signage associated with Tartine Cafe, and it must always be used at 100% opacity. 3
ONE COLOR
The one color logo option should only be used if full color is not available or when only one color production is available, otherwise the primary mark should always be used. The above colors are the only one color primary mark options that can be used within the Tartine Cafe brand. The Canary Yellow logo option should only be
used on darker backgrounds or 100% white backgrounds. The other dark-colored logos (Deep Blue and Cool Gray) should be used on lighter backgrounds. Whenever the logo is used, it should always be at 100% opacity. The Grayscale mark can be used when color printing is not available, it should never be in black. 4
REVERSED
Above are the reversed primary marks in all the acceptable colors. The reversed primary mark is Soft Gray, and can be used on the primary Cool Gray color or on the Deep blue of the secondary palette that are outlined on page 20 and 21, except for on the Canary Yellow in which case 100% white is used for the logo. The reversed
primary mark can only be used when the full color mark or the one color marks can not be used due to color constraints or other issues, and it must always be used at 100% opacity. The Grayscale mark can be used when color printing is not available. 5

The minimum size of any of the logotypes marks the bare minimum at which the mark is still readable and recognizable. The minimum size of the full color primary mark is 1.75 inches. The lighter colored one color marks (Canary Yellow and Soft Gray) should also not be smaller
that 1.75 inches. The darker colored one color marks (Cool Gray and Deep Blue), however, can go as small as 1.25 inches. The size of any of the reversed marks, no matter the color of the background, can not be smaller than 1.75 inches. 6
BUFFER SPACE

The minimum buffer space between the logo and any other elements of design or text is equal to the vertical height of the letter “I” pulled from the the logo. Regardless of the size of the logo, the buffer space is always the size of the vertical height of the letter “I” at the size of the logo. The
buffer space remains the same for the primary mark, one color marks and reversed marks. This buffer space is to ensure that there is enough negative space around the mark so it is clearly legible and is not obstructed by any text or marks around it. 7

The above misuses are not comprehensive. The designer should keep Tartine Cafe’s brand in mind when creating promotional materials and
avoid creating anything that is against what is outlined in this manual.

Tartine Cafe’s secondary mark is simply the word mark used without the icon. The word mark can be used when the use of the primary mark is not feasible due to spacing or design issues.
Additionally, it can be used on any non-official documents or design collateral. The logo or the word mark should, however, be present at all times unless. 10

Chaparral Pro is the only serif typeface that can be used within the Tartine Cafe brand. This typeface should be used for large bodies of text, for example, a letter (as on page 24). Chaparral Pro has a large family but only some of it can be used: Chaparral Pro Regular (and its italic counterpart) should be used for large bodies of
text, while Chaparral Pro Semibold and Bold can be interchangeably used for headings and titles. Longer bodies of text should be typed in only Cool Gray, if on a lighter background, or Soft Gray if used on a darker colored background. The minimum text size for any use of this typeface is 10pt, and the maximum is 12pt. 17

Arboria is the sans serif typeface that represents the Tartine Cafe brand. This sans serif typeface can be used only for relatively smaller bodies of text, such as the information on the business card (Page 26) and large titles that contrast with the serif typeface, as used in this manual. Titles should be presented in Arboria Bold or black if very large and in all caps (can be reversed out
as used in this manual), whereas, bodies of text should be displayed in Arboria Book. Arboria Light should never be used, as it is not very legible. Text should be typed in only Cool Gray, if on a lighter background, or Soft Gray if used on a darker colored background. The minimum text size for any use of this typeface is 10pt.

Tartine Cafe’s branding primary colors, Cool Gray and Canary Yellow, are derived from the primary logotype. The Canary Yellow represents heat, suggesting that the food is always served
fresh. Meanwhile the Cool Gray represents Tartine Cafe’s refined taste, yet accessible universality. The primary colors should always be the go to colors whenever possible. 19

The secondary colors of Tartine Cafe include two tints of the primary palette (the Soft Gray and the Bright Orange), as well as additional contrasting and earth tones. These secondary colors help expand the design frontiers, while still being communicative of the business’ ideals. These colors can be used to complement the primary palette, however, the primary palette should always be given top priority in any design choices. Color combinations between

similar values, or similar hues are not allowed, for example Earth Brown and Deep Blue should never be used in conjunction, similarly with Sea Blue and Deep Blue. Significant contrast is important when making any design choices. For example, the contrast in value if Soft Gray and Bright Orange are used can highlight any important information and capture the audience’s attention. 20

Tartine Cafe has the signature pattern (Example, page 26) which is made up of a donut, coffee cup, boiled egg and a piece of toast. This pattern can only be used in either Canary Yellow or Soft Gray. The pattern can be placed on a color background (any of the primary or secondary colors, not of the same value, however) and can be displayed or printed in a variety of opacities, as used throughout this manual. The pattern, however, should not be placed below or above the logo. It also can not be used above a photograph. The longest side of each element in the pattern should not get any smaller than 0.25 inches to withhold legibility. Another graphic

element is the Canary Yellow bar with vertically centered header or section marker text, as used throughout this manual. The bar can only be Canary Yellow with white text. The text used should be all caps in Arboria Bold. The height of the bar should be equal to approximately 2.75 times the height of the text used within it. The minimum left margin is determined by the length of the word “Text”, all caps, in the same font setting and size used. The vertical buffer space around the bar, should also be equal to the word “Text”, all caps, in the same font setting and size used as the header.

IMAGES
Imagery is an important part of Tartine Cafe’s branding, as visuals are essential to market our food (Example, page 29). In order to represent Tartine Cafe accurately, pictures taken of food must be placed in organic environments (wood, surrounded by fruit, etc.) as presented in the examples above. Additionally, at least
one of Tartine Cafe’s colors (either primary or secondary) must be represented in the picture, this way the images can be easily tied into the designs. For example, in all of the above images, Tartine Cafe’s primary color, Canary Yellow, is present in one form or another, and in the pancakes image, Sea Blue is also present. 22

Above is an example of a letter with Tartine Cafe’s letterhead. The letterhead contains the primary logotype at the top left and in a bar at the bottom, are the restaurant’s information in Arboria Regular 10pt, center aligned, white. The body text should be in Chaparral Pro book 10pt black ink only, and it should be left aligned
with the logo at the top. The text box left margin should be 1.7 inches and the top margin is 2.125 inches. The text box width should be 5.25 inches, and the maximum height is 7.75 inches. A hard return should be used to separate paragraphs. If a signature is used, it should also be in black ink only and the full name should be placed below. 25
