Design Village was a once in a lifetime experience in which I truly learned by doing. The site shaped the project in many aspects: materiality, transportation, adaptability, and design. To be able to design and create something that we had to sleep in was challenging but also very enjoyable. This project emphasized teamwork and our ability to problem solve. Starting off the quarter with this project pushed me to think of solutions in a very restrained amount of time. Design Village helped define to me what a dwelling is.

The house was designed for a 53 year old bachelor, Howard Ra c h o f s k y. T h e c l i e n t wa n t e d a house to showcase his collection of contemporary art- to create a destination for others. Howard Rachofsky originally had Meier design another house but the plans fell through as it became too expensive and did not meet his needs. Howard was a perfectionist himself and did not want to compromis. The construction was closely overlooked by Howard and h e v i s i t e d t h e s i t e ev e r yd ay.

After his marriage he moved into a more family friendly home. The residence became a prime gallery for himself and his now wife’s art collection. He and his wife Cindy Rachofsky donated their house along with their art collection to the Dallas Museum of Art. The house is now used as gallery and event space. It has become a resource for use by students and non-profit organizations for educational a n d f u n d ra i s i n g o p p o r t u n i t y.

International Dwelling was a project that required me to analyze architecture in several ways. The analysis and research consisted of both analog and digital forms which has shown me different ways of looking at things. I learned more about a style of architecture and what makes certain architecture beautiful.

Motion Studio combined everything we have learned this year. This project reflected the skills and thoughts we have developed since day one. Although this project was the most difficult and time consuming so far, I was able to enjoy it. I enjoyed designing something with more freedom than in past projects. I also enjoyed seeing how much I have learned and seeing where my skill level is at.
