MONIKER PROJECTS presents
GOSSIP WELL TOLD 21ST - 26TH JULY 2011. EXHIBITION CATALOGUE
Private View: Thursday 21 July. 18.00 to 22.00 Exhibition on show: 22 – 26 July. 11.00 to 18.00 daily. Blackall Studios, 73 Leonard Street, Shoreditch, EC2A 4QS With the street art phenomena continuing to smash attendance records in galleries and museums globally, Moniker continues to build on the success of last year’s art fair with the launch of a special London exhibition in July.
This exhibition highlights the international scope of street art and beyond, as the genre continues to attract worldwide attention from museums, auction houses and collectors. As well as showcasing artworks emanating from the street art scene, Moniker will be widening its scope of reference with the inclusion of artists such as Bob and Roberta Smith from London, Pop surrealist Luke Chueh from California, and acclaimed New York photographer Cheryl Dunn.
GOSSIP WELL TOLD showcases a selected group of artists who will exhibit at this year’s Moniker, which will take place on October 13-16th 2011. GOSSIP WELL TOLD exhibits new and original artworks and installations by internationally recognised artists from a movement spawned through word of mouth, a movement that brought colour to the streets of the world’s most exciting cities and that spread like wildfire via the internet. This is a scene fuelled by the artists and lovers of the art itself. It has received little support from the conventional British art establishments and is only now beginning to receive the wider attention and credit it deserves in the UK.
Moniker will take place from 13-16th October 2011 at Village Underground in Shoreditch. During the fair, Moniker Projects will continue with its broader philosophy of commissioning a series of offsite projects including public artworks, educational workshops and film screenings.
An Innovating, DIY mentality and not waiting to be invited is the philosophy that has built the scene and made it what it is today.

Alex Fakso - Italy Alex Fakso is a prominent artist in the contemporary street art scene, started photographing at the age of thirteen when he got hold of a camera in order to record his own “pieces” on trains. Since then, Fakso has never stopped rubbing shoulders with the underworld, being part of the writing movement since the early 90’s and at the same time becoming its direct narrator. Fast or Die is Alex Fakso’s latest photographic project, which came to life after four years of traveling around the world, from London to the US, and as far as Russia and Japan. www.fakso.com

Ben Eine - UK London’s most prolific and original street artist who specialises in the central element of all graffiti – the form of letters. EINE, shot to international fame when David Cameron presented one of his works to President Obama as a gift on his first official state visit, but is arguably more famous for ‘Alphabet Street’ – the shutters and murals he painted in his trademark colours and typography in Middlesex Street, London– described by The Times as “a street now internationally recognized as a living piece of art with direct links to The White House.” www.einesigns.co.uk

Bob and Roberta Smith - UK Bob and Roberta Smith's work cannot be reduced to one genre. Often it takes the shape of hobbies; music, cooking or DIY which is then combined with a subversive humour. Smith attempt to demolish established values and respected authorities and like most humour it is to do with humiliation. Smith thinks it's moral to be absurd and that embracing absurd things is somehow an area of sanity. Much of the work manifests itself in performance, with strong ideas of participation or of the participatory positions similar to those used by the Fluxus in the 1960's. www.bobandrobertasmith.zxq.net

Candice Tripp- South Africa Candice Tripp moved from her native Cape Town, South Africa to London in 2004. Like the realm of traditional fairytales, the world of South African born Tripp is both magical and macabre. In this domain, melancholic children and all manner of beasts are executed in oil and ink; it is a place where both joy and sorrow are as sharp as swords. Childlike subjects add a sense of innocence to her work, though it is executed with a brutal wit that is unquestionably adult. Beautiful, illustrative, and dark, it is the very strangeness and richness of these figures that beckons us into their enchanted world. www.candicetripp.com

CASE (Andreas von Chrzanowski)- Germany The effect of politics on street art is perhaps no better exemplified than by the influence the fall of the Berlin Wall had on Case, as a child growing up in East Germany. Inspired by experiences as diverse as his travels and the fairy tales of that childhood. Case started experimenting with spray cans in 1995. He quickly excelled at creating photorealistic images of body forms and portraits, using the packaging of the spray can boxes. Poignantly he often focuses on the textures of the surfaces he uses as he displaces and modifies, endeavouring to twist beauty into the grotesque. www.sexyartcase.com

Two graffiti artists from Frankfurt and Erfurt, Germany. Their collaboration started when they first met in 2004. The differences in Hera’s and Akut’s ways of approaching art and the painting itself are vast. Akut approaches his work through detailed planning. The photorealism he spray paints today is self-taught and needs a bundle of preparations. Hera in contrast paints freely and is influenced by the surrounding areas and the walls they choose to master. This combination of Akut’s photo realism, and Hera’s free movement is what makes Herakut such a special collaboration. www.herakut.com

Luke Chueh- USA Born in Philadelphia, but raised in Fresno, Luke Chueh started painting when the LA underground art show, Cannibal Flower, invited him to show at their events. Chueh quickly worked his way up the ranks of the LA art scene, establishing himself as an artist not to be ignored. Employing minimal color schemes, simple animal characters, and a seemingly endless list of ill-fated situations, Chueh stylistically walks the fine line between comedy and tragedy. Chueh’s work has been featured in galleries internationally. www.lukechueh.com
