NORTH SHIELDS CHAMBER UPDATE

WHIT LE Y BAY CHAM BE R AT T HE ‘ HE ART ’ OF T HE LOCAL COM M UNIT Y

Miles Walton, Chairman of North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce.

Whitley Bay’s Chamber of Trade has announced the installation of three defibrillators in and around the town. Purchased and installed with money raised by businesses and the local community, the Chamber received support from a group called ‘Cardioproof’.

“October saw the very successful conclusion of the Carnegie Twin Towns project with towns from all over the UK visiting North Shields to celebrate. The project has enabled the town to share best practice with Merthyr Tydfil (our twin) as well as several other towns facing similar challenges. We’re all keen to stay in touch and enhance the fantastic relationships we’ve built up.

The essential equipment, which can help improve the chances of survival in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest in the town, has been installed in Whitley Bay, Monkseaton and Cullercoats.

“There are plenty of other projects progressing within the Chamber. The information leaflet given to cruise and other docking ships at North Shields is being expanded. We hope it will encourage crew and passengers to visit local shops and attractions and have used feedback from recipients to improve the information we hand out. “A North Shields App is being explored, to provide information to local residents and visitors about the shops, services and attractions available in the town. A small committee of Chamber members will be working with Northumbria University on this project. “Our #OneNorthShields monthly prize on Facebook and our Backing Business Campaign, with the News Guardian, are very popular and will be continuing into 2019. Join the Chamber or find out more information at www.northshieldschamber.co.uk.”

B US IN ES S FO RU M IS H ARD AT W O RK Here’s a simple run-down of the projects the Forum currently has underway and the impact they’re having on our business community: • We’ve recently run an event alongside North Tyneside VODA at MeadowWell Connected, focusing on the benefits of Corporate Social Responsibility for business. As a result of the initiative, we’ve produced a document which outlines all the CSR opportunities available to businesses, including promoting health messages, preparing young people for the world of work, acting as a business ambassador within schools, donating time by running workshops and volunteering.

• We work with the high schools in North Tyneside to provide work experience opportunities for every student. A team works with our schools and businesses to promote the local authority’s ‘Get up and go’ event to show students the opportunities with businesses offering higher level apprenticeships and skills training. • We’ve recently undertaken some research to find out what type of support businesses would most benefit from. The answer? Signposting, sales and marketing support, a mentor scheme and networking events. We were also told that small loans of between £10-£50k, along with investment opportunities, would be helpful.

Julie Summers, chair of the Chamber, said: “We are delighted that the defibrillators have now been installed in Whitley Bay – having this vital equipment to hand means that anyone suffering a heart attack in the town has a better chance of survival than ever before. Thank you to everyone involved in the fundraising for this project.” In other news, Whitley Bay Chamber continues to support local business projects with its ‘Make it Happen’ campaign, which was behind the very successful late-night shopping event held in the town at the end of November. For more details about the support available to local businesses, visit the website at www.wbcot.co.uk

• We’re working with North Tyneside Council’s construction project team to support businesses to tender for larger contracts and sign up to the new Dynamic Purchasing System for those smaller pieces. • The NTBF team has met with each of the North East Fund Fund managers to work out how best to support them in their work and set up events with partners, as often as we can.

• Our NTBF Facebook Group aims to encourage forum members to connect with each other, share knowledge and do business within the group. Have you joined yet? If you’ve got any ideas or projects that you want us to be focusing on in Quarter 1 of 2019, why don’t you get in touch with Project Support Officer, Amy Farrell on 0191 643 6000 or email amy.farrell@northtyneside.gov.uk

• We’ve supported a Scale up North East event, held at the Spanish City on 8 November, exploring the issues surrounding scaling and growing a business.

UPDATE: LATEST NEWS

WALLSE ND CHAM BE R Kevin Stephenson, Chairman of Wallsend Chamber.

BRINGING CONST RUCT ION BACK IN-HOUSE North Tyneside Council has announced recently that construction, housing repairs and maintenance services, currently delivered by Kier, will return to the direct management of the Council.

CLEANING UP WITH INVESTMENT SUPPORT Cleanily was the first business in North Tyneside to benefit from an investment from the North East Small Loan Fund, supported by The European Regional Development Fund. Founder and managing director, Edward Newton, explains more about the company and how the loan will help it expand. What is Cleanily? We use web and smartphone technology to connect independent cleaning professionals with domestic and business customers. Bespoke apps are used by the cleaners at the start and finish of each job. GPS technology

confirms each service provider’s location, and payments from clients to cleaners are triggered automatically once a job is marked as complete. Why did you apply for the Small Loan Fund? We applied for the funding to launch Cleanily throughout the UK. We’re rolling out our services in ten starter locations where we feel there will be the highest immediate demand and expect to add new places to our list in the coming months. Traditionally, cleaning businesses have scaled by selling franchises. We’re using technology. We aren’t an online, ‘on-demand’ model. Unlike

“ Our aim is to quickly secure around 10,000 hours of weekly recurring business within the foreseeable future – it’s an ambitious target, but with the technology we have in place and growing numbers of both service providers and customers, we think it’s also a realistic one.”

The £40m per annum contract was initially started in 2009 and will come to an end on 31 March 2019. From 1 April 2019, the Council will manage all construction work including the repairs and maintenance of house and nonhousing buildings, capital investment, aids and adaptations and new builds.

booking a taxi, we aim to trigger long-term relationships between customer and cleaner, but we’re applying similar ‘on-demand’ tech to automate things like payments and communication. Our aim is to quickly secure around 10,000 hours of weekly recurring business within the foreseeable future – it’s an ambitious target, but with the technology we have in place and growing numbers of both service providers and customers, we think it’s also a realistic one. How did you find the process of applying? The Small Loan Fund fit well with where the business is now, and the NEL team made the investment application process straightforward and smooth. We worked with regional fund management firm NEL Fund Managers to secure the investment, which we’ll use to support the official launch of the service in ten locations around the UK, and to recruit the head office staff that will be required as demand grows. For more information about NEL’s investment criteria, visit www.nel.co.uk or contact the investment team on 0345 369 7007.

Around three quarters of the £40m per annum spend within the construction project will be related to the 14,800 council-owned homes in North Tyneside and half will be spent with the supply chain. As the project stands, the Council is in the process of securing the services of constructionrelated businesses to work within the project, with many areas awaiting tenders from larger construction companies in the region. Dynamic Purchasing System – how smaller businesses can get involved The good news for smaller businesses, however, is that the Council is about to launch a Dynamic Purchasing System which will allow smaller businesses to become registered on the Council’s books. The system is aimed at trades such as plumbers, joiners, painters and electricians as well as more specialist trades like masonry and joinery manufacturing.

“ The good news for smaller businesses, however, is that the Council is about to launch a Dynamic Purchasing System which will allow smaller businesses to become registered on the Council’s books.”

Cllr Steve Cox, cabinet member for housing, said: “We are absolutely committed to ensuring that whenever we subcontract work, local tradespeople and businesses have the opportunity to bid for it – and on longer term arrangements – giving them the chance to grow and thrive.

“One of the key objectives for the Wallsend Chamber is to enable employability, educational attainment and wellbeing for the community in Wallsend. The Chamber has some exciting developments on the Employment Pathway which will be announced early in 2019. The Employment Pathway is currently being piloted with a number of individuals in the programme. It is expected that all those in the pilot will secure a full time job at the end of the programme with one of the local employers committed to supporting the Employment pathway initiative. “The final of talent show, Singedunum will be held in North Tyneside on Friday 22nd February 2019. The first auditions have discovered some very talented singers. More auditions are to be held in January. Announcements will be made in January about the judges for the final.” For more information about Wallsend Chamber visit www.wallsendchamber.org

“We want to make the process of joining our books as easy as possible.” Interested tradespeople and businesses should register with NEPO to enter into the procurement process. Procurement will happen soon with many contracts commencing on 1 April 2019 when the contract with Kier comes to an end. For more information, email construction.project@northtyneside.gov.uk

The new purchasing system will allow the Council to spend some of the construction budget with smaller, local businesses, who will work in conjunction with the Council’s own internal workforce. In addition, providers of training in such areas as health and safety and trade-specific courses are being sought to train the returning workforce.
