Monjasa means personal business

Juan Carlos Charris, Commercial Director, Americas, meeting with business partners in Panama City.

Corporate purpose

Monjasa’s role in the oil and shipping industries remains to inspire our business partners and become first choice by challenging the status quo with our original solutions.

By living our values, respect, ambition, curiosity and smile & joy, we are building strong personal relations and engaging in networks in every port.

Thereby, we are unlocking niche market access and advancing global trade for the benefit of both customers and communities.

Ownership of sourcing, shipping and supply

The Monjasa Group uses its agility and experience to stay in sync and ahead of increasingly challenging regulatory expectations in the bunker industry.

Having developed into a global trading group allows us to offer our customers an end-to-end experience. We take ownership of our products and know how they have been sourced, shipped and supplied in compliance with regulations and under the quality and quantity standards of ISO 9001:2015, a certification that Monjasa has held since 2014.

We are also certified according to ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management, ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management and ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management.

Together, this gives us comfort in doing the right things for our customers and that we remain a valued partner to their businesses.

Our ISO standards tell our customers how we operate

We make a difference to our customers, who view compliance efforts and a transparent one-brand name business as order qualifiers. Together with thorough market knowledge and high service levels, we push the boundaries for what excellence looks like in the new normal shipping and bunkering business that we operate in.

In the markets Monjasa is represented in today, we have to be successful through our people who offer personal service, high quality and full document trails across our global operations.

Advancing trade in the Middle East

Monjasa is the largest bunker trading company in Dubai and a long-term community partner throughout the Middle East.

Feedback from our customers taking bunkers in the Arabian Gulf primarily points out the reliability of our operations as the most attractive factor. Meeting the same product quality and the same service level over and over is definitely our competitive advantage in this market.

Leading supplier in the Arabian Gulf

Monjasa is a competitive local partner throughout the Arabian Gulf. Since establishing our Dubai office in 2006, we have grown to be a leading supplier of marine fuels in this area. This includes the region’s busiest port, Jebel Ali, where Monjasa is the largest supplier. Recently, we have expanded our services in this area through our collaboration with biofuel producer, Neutral Fuels. With this new partnership, we are enabling biofuels logistics in the UAE.

All Monjasa-operated tankers in the Arabian Gulf follow the strict quality guidelines set out by the Dubai Maritime City Authority.

Full-range agency services

Monjasa provides additional maritime agency services through all of our global offices. But particularly in the UAE, we offer extended services for owners, charterers and operators every day of the year. A strong network of local contacts and personal service has earned us this opportunity of adding further value to our customers.

Moving beyond bunkers and working across the maritime supply chain is an important part of our one-stop-shop aspirations in Dubai.

Covering all Red Sea ports

With more than a decade of experience as a bunker supplier in this region, Monjasa is a competitive local partner throughout the Red Sea area. With an office in Dubai, it is only natural for us to cover these neighbouring ports.

Our in-depth knowledge and local experience enable us to offer complete coverage from the traditional bunker markets in the Suez Canal and Jeddah to Djibouti at the mouth of the Red Sea.

Leading supplier in West Africa

For more than a decade, Monjasa has been sustaining maritime trade developments in West Africa. With 15 million tonnes of marine fuels supplied since we started doing business here, we are the region’s leading physical bunker supplier.

We have always been attracted to doing business here. Not because it is easy, but because it is hard. We have always loved a challenge and sought the opportunity to make a difference for our customers. It is in our DNA.

West Africa therefore also holds a special place in our hearts. It was one of the first regions where we set out to prove our philosophy of delivering bunkers in tough regions rather than just seeking out the mainstream ports. Our African experiences and extended know-how of operating in challenging waters laid the foundation for our global expansion.

Building trustful local partnerships

We no longer think of ourselves as a visitor on the African continent. On the contrary, blending in and forging strong local partnerships and exceeding local content requirements are top priorities for us.

By establishing our offices in Walvis Bay, Namibia, and Luanda, Angola we have taken important first steps towards positioning Monjasa as a truly local trading partner. Furthermore, we continuously engage in new projects in several African emerging markets. Nations like Liberia, the Republic of Congo, Ghana and Nigeria are all on our radar for extended trading activities – both offshore and onshore.

Afloat fuel storage enables extended logistics

Facilitating our extensive physical supply operations in West Africa, Monjasa deploys floating storages in the size range of LR2 and Suezmax. Our base port is Lomé, Togo, from where we cover all ports in the range from Abidjan to Walvis Bay.

Operating our own fleet is a crucial prerequisite for delivering on our promise of unparalleled service, flexibility and reliability in the area. As a global tanker operator, we are able to ensure that the tonnage and number of vessels are always optimised to our customers’ needs.

Northwest Europe physical supply

With two local offices in Denmark and oil terminal operation in the English Channel, Monjasa is a competitive shipping partner across Northwest Europe.

We aim to continuously consolidate and strengthen our capabilities across Europe, which we consider a home market for Monjasa. The aim is to benefit our customers by offering flexibility on a string of supply locations throughout the area.

Refuelling across the UK and France

Centered around our oil terminal operation in Portland Port, UK, the Monjasa fleet is positioned throughout the English Channel and provides complete coverage across the UK and France.

Our oil terminal operations in Portland increases flexibility for our customers and has become the easy-accessible alternative for taking bunkers at the entrance to the Emission Control Area (ECA).

Portland Port used to be a base port for the Royal Navy, but today serves as a growing bunkering destination. All fuel grades are supplied at the safe and sheltered outer and inner port anchorages by our tanker vessels or alongside the quay directly from our oil terminal. The draft restriction is 10.6m and if this is not sufficient, we have a suitable offshore position just southwest of Portland.

In Northern France, our fleet offers coverage across the entire area, from Dunkerque, Calais, Dieppe, Le Havre, Antifer, Rouen and all the way to Brest and Saint-Nazaire.

Flexible shore tank solutions

During the past 10 years, Monjasa has developed into a niche market specialist supporting the offshore wind industry. We operate several shore tanks in Denmark, Germany and Belgium for the benefit of offshore operators.

Our 40-feet shore tank self-service option is based on careful research of port infrastructures and developed exclusively for each project with careful consideration of location, supply and fuel type. All shore tanks are approved according to all regulations and local port authorities.

A near partner in the Mediterranean

With local offices in Athens and Limassol, Monjasa is a near partner to the Greek shipping community and the broader Mediterranean shipping markets.

From our office in Limassol, Cyprus, our local team handles daily bunker supplies in the Mediterranean Sea through our relationships with neighbouring distributors.

By only working with hand-picked suppliers, Monjasa offers customers flexibility in bunker supplies by covering from the Gibraltar Straits to Malta as a highly competitive alternative, and the broader Mediterranean shipping markets such as Italy and Spain.

Flexibility on supply locations

In the event of challenging weather, we offer alternative bunker options in the Aegean Sea off the Greek Islands and the coast of Egypt where our local knowledge provides our customers with a safe bunker option.

With years of experience from dealing with the offshore industry, Monjasa’s team also arranges offshore bunker operations in prearranged areas in the Southeast Mediterranean.

Part of the Greek shipping community

Following many years of positive developments in Cyprus and the Mediterranean, Monjasa has expanded further to Greece. With an office in the historic shipping destination, Athens, our local presence allows us to enjoy more frequent face-to-face meetings with our partners.

We offer refuelling solutions to Greek shipowners and act as a gateway for taking bunkers in our physical supply areas such as West Africa, the Panama Canal, the English Channel, Houston and Dubai.

Monjasa takes up an industry-leading position when it comes to providing transparency and documenting all steps in our operating model. Our local knowledge provides us with the right experience to guide our partners on industry developments in the Greek markets.

Through Monjasa's fixed price agreements and exclusive fuel contracts, we also offer our partners a value-adding alternative to the Mediterranean spot market.

Strengthening ties across North America

For more than a decade, Monjasa has established itself as a reliable partner to the North American maritime industry through personal business and challenging the status quo daily.

With offices in New York and Houston, two of North America’s major shipping hubs, we are consistently anchoring and expanding our North American footprint with a steady growth in demand for our services and the volume of marine fuels we supply.

Expanding activities in the US Gulf Coast and Canada

With a comprehensive supply network spanning all major ports and engaging with a diverse client book from oil majors to supplying cruise lines, Monjasa has developed a strong brand in the world’s largest economy.

Our 2021 Houston office expansion has catered to growing demand in the US Gulf. Integrating with our physical supply operations, we have been able to deliver marine fuel solutions to our global customers. Our Houston setup offers all grades of marine fuels and includes dedicated Monjasa barges covering 12 supply locations across 400 km.

Further north, we have extended our North American reach into Canada where we have local expertise and infrastructure available to support our Canadian customers as well as supplying the entire shipping community coast to coast.

Cruise line experts

Monjasa has established ourselves as a trusted partner for the cruise ship industry in Miami. Achieving a service culture that meets with the high expectations of cruise lines has required years of dedication, maintaining high operational standards, and fostering close collaboration with our customers throughout the entire bunker supply process.

Strong industry ties

Thanks to our close relations with suppliers, customers and other business partners, Monjasa has become an integral part of the American shipping community. Through our active memberships in the Association of Ship Brokers and Agents (ASBA) and the Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA), we reinforce our commitment to the maritime industry in North America, leveraging these partnerships to expand our network and engage in market development discussions, with a particular focus on the region’s decarbonisation efforts.

Building relations across Latin America

Beyond our long-standing fuel services across the United States, we are accelerating our Latin American activities from our local offices in Panama City and Rio De Janeiro.

Monjasa is accelerating operations in the Panama Canal, and with our vessels operating in Balboa and Cristobal, our daily local presence truly matters to our partners.

Our business rests on strong personal relations

From day one in Latin America, our focus has been on challenging the status quo by being a different trading partner in a historically well-consolidated bunker market with high entry barriers.

As an example, we want to position Monjasa as a trading partner who is always accessible to our customers in and around the Panama Canal. If needed, we can also have an operations manager on board any vessel in the Panama Canal within an hour. Unlike most global trading houses that manage their Panama activities from abroad, we manage all our trading activities in the region. Our different and local approach has earned us valuable local partners, enabling smooth logistics and bunker services of the highest quality.

Introducing the largest tanker in the Panama Canal

Today, Monjasa operates the youngest tanker fleet in Panama, and most recently we introduced the Panama Canal’s largest and most technically advanced tanker, the Monjasa Thunder (19,991 DWT) for improved operational flexibility and cargo operations.

Physical supply in Colombia and Brazil

Aligned with Monjasa’s global quality standards, we are also enhancing our traditional fuel and biofuel operations in Colombia. With over a decade of local market experience, we can provide competitively-priced bunkers in Cartagena and other surrounding ports across Colombia, as well as in our other key markets, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador and Argentina.

At the same time, we are meeting the growing demand for high-quality services in Brazil through our local presence and barge supply operations in Rio de Janeiro.

Supporting maritime developments in Asia

Monjasa is a well-established partner to the Asian shipping community with three offices located in Singapore, Shanghai and Ho Chi Minh City and supplying 1+ milion tonnes of marine fuel across the Asian region every year.

Since establishing our first local office in Singapore in 2008, our team has been focusing on offering extended flexibility for customers taking bunkers in both mainstream and less crowded Asian ports.

Hand-picking our business partners

With a high number of suppliers in this area, we are very careful when choosing our preferred business partners. Not all suppliers fit our due diligence measures for entering into a collaboration, and we are therefore working with a selected number of local and international suppliers supporting long-term partnerships.

Barge operations across Singapore Anchorage

Most recently, Monjasa has established barge operations in the Port of Singapore, seizing further ownership across the industry value chain by offering end-to-end maritime logistics in the world’s largest and most transparent bunker hub.

Understanding low-carbon fuels demand

With new fuel types emerging across Asia, our local teams are closely monitoring maritime developments on the long-term industry transition to lowcarbon fuels. We see this as an important part of running a responsible business and as an integral part of how Monjasa best supports our customers in the transition to a low-carbon future.

Specialist partner in less crowded ports

Monjasa holds the capabilities to make a real difference for our customers by improving accessibility and product quality in some of the emerging and less crowded local markets.

Monjasa is positioned as a strong supplier in e.g. Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Bangladesh and Indonesia. In these emerging markets, we are investing many resources into building trustful business relationships to secure reliable supplies in otherwise very difficult logistical areas.

Expanding our biofuels logistics

Monjasa has been making green strides by engaging in new partnerships and expanding our biofuels logistics across our regions.

Monjasa supplies biofuels worldwide, from the Americas to the Middle East and Africa to Asia. We are catering to the diverse preferences of our customers and shipowners by offering a variety of biofuels blends including FAME and HVO and provide our customers with a Proof of Sustainability (POS) through the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC). This ensures that greenhouse gas (GHG) emission savings are in alignment with RED III.

Additionally, we measure GHG emissions from each phase of the supply chain and make this data available to the end users.

Preparing for the changing marine fuels mix

Monjasa holds a unique position in the value chain between upstream fuel producers and downstream customers. While the demand for biofuels blends is gradually emerging, we are proactively preparing our global supply chains, fleet logistics and organisation for the changing marine fuels mix.

Through the establishment of new partnerships, Monjasa is present at the production site and throughout the supply chain to understand the full spectrum of logistics required to support the availability of low-carbon marine fuels.

Monjasa is ISSC-certified globally across our operations in the Americas, Europe, Middle East & Africa and Asia.

The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a globally recognised sustainability certification system covering the entire supply chain of biobased feedstocks and renewables. It is designed to ensure the sustainability and traceability of biomass feedstocks, as well as to promote social and environmental responsibility throughout the entire supply chain.

By certifying products according to ISCC standards, companies can demonstrate their commitment to sustainable and responsible production practices and meet regulatory requirements.

A fleet of quality tankers

Strong physical supply relies on a fleet of modern tankers and expert crews.

Monjasa’s physical supply services are conducted by our fleet of around 30 tankers and barges strategically positioned around the globe – nearby the world’s busiest waterways and in still emerging shipping markets.

Safe and reliable supply goes before anything else, and we are pleased to offer a specialised and trained crew on board each of them.

Our technical ship management company, Montec, ensures technical quality, vetting, and crew management related to the Monjasa fleet.

Monjasa chartering

Monjasa also provides chartering services for spot market cargo inquiries.

With our tanker vessels spread out across West Africa, Northwest Europe, Panama, the US Gulf, the Arabian Gulf and Singapore, Monjasa plays an active role in the global shipping market. Our logistical setup thereby allows us to provide third parties with customised chartering solutions within the tanker segment.

We trade across various segments as charterer, commercial manager and shipowner and we are always available for inquiries.

Manage your risks

In the ever-evolving world of the oil and shipping industry, risk management plays a crucial role in navigating an uncertain future. As the market fluctuates and global events affect economies, businesses need to be prepared for potential risks that can jeopardise their profitability and stability.

Securing availability and reducing risk

With an increasing focus on long-term planning and securing future supply of marine fuels, Monjasa’s Risk Management department offers, among other services, fixed-price contracts as a value-adding alternative to the spot market. With a fixed-price contract, our customers minimise exposure to risks of increasing oil price levels while at the same time securing availability of fuel exactly when and where they need it.

Flexible terms

Recognising it can be difficult to predict the exact future needs for marine fuels, our fixed price agreements offer the flexibility of changing both port, period of delivery and product during the contract period within mutually agreed terms between customer and Monjasa.

Working with the majors

Transparency and ownership of sourcing, shipping and supply comes from working with the strongest partners.

On the sourcing side, the Monjasa Group has entered into several strategic partnerships with the world’s largest oil & gas companies and commodity trading groups.

By partnering with the industry majors, our physical supply is complemented by closely monitored refining, terminal storage and distribution of the highest quality standards.

Collaborating with the oil majors requires financial strength and solid determination on combining logistics and compliance. Monjasa has invested heavily in specialists within compliance and quality management of our operations. Our business model thus allows us access to a highly regulated market which requires an immovable focus on transparency in all transactions.

Serving 1,000 customers globally

Monjasa serves more than 1,000 customers globally, including some of the world’s largest shipowners, operators and charterers. However, as a niche market specialist, we also provide refuelling operations for numerous small and medium-sized shipping companies operating in less developed regions of the world.

Strong financial partner

In terms of financial capability and performance, the Monjasa Group is positioned among the most robust bunker companies in the world with a consolidated equity of a total USD 400m+ and an industry leading solvency ratio. As a result of our solid financial foundation, the Monjasa Group enjoys high credit ratings worldwide.
