CREATING FUTURE ENTREPRENEURS
CREATING FUTURE ENTREPRENEURS Do you dream of starting up your own business? Or would you like to shine in a blue-chip company? Either way, entrepreneurial skills – the skills you need to set up, run and grow a business – will help you get on in work. By experiencing the competitiveness of doing business, you will learn how to be more inventive and customer-focused. You will learn what makes a company successful, what brings in the customers and what makes money. These skills are hugely important to charities and public sector organisations, too.

Facing Dragons
Working together for good
LeSoCo is a ‘Gazelle College’ – a college dedicated to giving you access to many different entrepreneurial events and opportunities. You could be pitching business ideas or quizzing some of the world’s leading entrepreneurs – Dragons’ Den style. You can participate in business challenges, visit enterprise events and be inspired by worldrenowned innovators, and share ideas with other young people.
Many of our students want to raise money for charity. Some do this on a big scale, along the way making new friends, practising the skills they gain at College and learning about team-working.
Competing to help The ‘PantrepreneurSHIP’ competition is organised among Gazelle Colleges by Pants to Poverty, a Fairtrade social enterprise. Student teams compete against each other to demonstrate the most successful business approach to selling pants and pyjamas – whilst raising money to alleviate poverty.
In 2013 several Health and Social Care students decided they wanted to give something back to society. They chose Cancer Research UK’s ‘Race for Life’ because each of them knew someone who had suffered from cancer. They used the business skills they learnt in class to plan the project and create training and publicity schedules. Being students at the College also gave them access to gym facilities and expert advice in training, good nutrition during training and how to set up a blog to help their fundraising. In all, against a fundraising target of £500, they raised more than £750 or 150% of their target.
Building skills through SkillBuild Construction students studying courses from bricklaying to cabinet making, painting and decorating to roofing, compete in the biannual SkillBuild competition. It includes local, regional, national and, ultimately, international competition. LeSoCo students have been very successful. You could be too.

Dressing one of the world’s most glamorous women Two lucky LeSoCo students participated in ‘Styled to Rock’, competing to fashion the best and hottest looks for singer and fashion designer, Rihanna.

Secrets of smash-hits Alex Wright-Manning of Creative Assembly, the award-winning studio behind the smash-hit series ‘Total War’, gave our students the chance to ask about every aspect of the video game industry. He talked about the best way to break into this sort of work, the future of video games and opportunities for women in this sector. Keshava Walcott said, “I really want to be a games designer, so to have someone in the industry who can give the right direction here was great.”
Interested in sales or marketing? Dan Dohery has led sales and marketing teams of hundreds of staff. He’s also an entrepreneur, innovator, networker, adviser, philanthropist, mentor and leader. Former students take centre stage Khali Best went on to the Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance, then made his debut in ‘Choir Boy’ at the Royal Court. He then landed the role of Dexter Hartman in ‘East Enders’. Khali said:
“Working with such great actors so early in my
career is an amazing opportunity.”
Modupe Adebeye became Faith Olubumni in ‘E20’ (the Webby Award-winning East Enders online spin-off). Modupe said:
“I have really enjoyed working on set with all the E20 cast... It has been an absolutely great experience.”
Jonzi D studied dance at our College. He says:
“The College influenced my strong desire to present
hip hop culture in a professional context” which is exactly what he now does with his own company, Jonzi D Production. Jonzi also curates the annual Breakin’ Convention, makes music and directs films. He has performed and created dance theatre pieces in Europe, North America, Israel, New Zealand, Cuba and southern Africa.
Musical inspiration Former LeSoCo student (3 times!) and LeSoCo Enterprise Champion, Richard DeVere Price has set up two flourishing businesses. After studying music with us he founded ‘FWD 360’, a multi-media platform for new young talent. He returned to the college to do an Audio-Visual Communications business course, then set up ’The Revolution is Real’, which creates animation and motion graphics. Richard has since returned to our college to take a teaching qualification so he can teach young students about entrepreneurship. Ben Golding is also a teacher, as well as writing his own music. He teaches music ranging from vocals to keyboard skills. He also runs Open Mic nights so his students can get experience on stage. His next great plan is to develop his own label to showcase local young talent. Some other past students of our Music Department include drummer Andrew Maclean, who has worked with Corinne Bailey Rae, Drew Horley, Mercury Prize nominated producer, Lidiaana, international recording artist, and Don E, a long-time collaborator with Omar.
Ben Duke founded his own company, Lost Dog, along with Rachel Mesequer. Ben and Rachel were the 2011 winners of the UK’s foremost choreography competition, the biannual Place Prize. After graduating from our Access to HE Dance course, Ben studied at London Contemporary Dance School. He has created work for Scottish Dance Theatre, the National Theatre of Scotland and the Gate Theatre.

Valuable volunteering Volunteering and outreach programmes are always valued by the College – as well as by those you help. In mid-2013 our Construction students helped Creekside Education Trust transform derelict land into a wilderness area accessible for those with mobility issues. Construction Curriculum Manager, John White, said:
“Our students did really well to design and build a pond in just four weeks. It has given them valuable work experience that will do much to add to their qualifications.”

TRY SOMETHING NEW – MAKE FRIENDS! You don’t have to be studying performing arts to perform. You don’t have to aspire to play football for England to do sport. And you don’t need any prior experience to get involved. LeSoCo’s clubs are set up and run by our students. To set up a new club or society, all you need to do is get other people involved!

16 RICH FROM EXPERIENCES
Putting on a show Who wouldn’t jump at the chance to be backstage putting on a Mumford & Sons concert? We give you tremendous opportunities such as this as part of the National Skills Academy for Creative and Cultural Skills Summer Festival Stage-side Days programme. Our students on backstage and technical courses often progress to apprenticeships, or start with assistant roles and work their way up, like former student Tamykha Patterson who quickly worked her way up to become stage manager at the Lyric Hammersmith. Over 90% of our drama students win places at drama school and university including places at the Guildford School of Acting, the Manchester Metropolitan University School of Theatre and the Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance. To help you get there, our partnerships give you the chance to do workshops and work placements at some of the top venues and schools, from the Royal Opera House to the London Contemporary Dance School.
As a dancer you could be in the annual ‘Big Dance’ event or enter competitions such as Youth Dance England’s ‘Young Creatives’, Blueprint Bursary award for young choreographers, or the British Red Cross Make Your Move Dance Competition. You’ll also have equally wonderful experiences at our own Tresillian Theatre or local venues such as Stratford Circus or Greenwich Dance Agency. You might also perform in local schools, like Access to Dance students who performed a repertoire of jazz and contemporary dance at south-east London schools. They worked with professional choreographers, Lyndsey McConville and Neil Fleming-Brown, and choreographed pieces themselves.

From catwalk to shop window At the end of every year, the very best of our Fashion and Art students’ work goes on display on the catwalk. We love to see our students’ creativity. Even more, we love to see them succeed in the real, competitive world. That’s why we give you opportunities to experience the pressure, inventiveness and excitement of the world of work; like the ‘Pop-up Shop’ in Lewisham Shopping Centre, where Art and Fashion students display their works and discuss their products with real shoppers. Visual Merchandising Students get very real opportunities to see if their shop windows help sell products and match the retailer’s brief and branding. Here they prepare the window for the Covent Garden store for leading menswear designer, Nigel Hall – who was delighted with the result, especially the beautiful watercolours by Nhung Le Thi Hong.

Q: I’m not sure I’ll know anyone when I start College – how can I meet new friends? A: There are always events, clubs and activities to join in with at LeSoCo, which are great ways to meet other
students outside your course as well as within it.
On top of organised activities, our cafeterias and open spaces are always full of students relaxing, ready for a chat. The Freshers’ Fairs will give you lots of other ideas.
Q: Is there a way for my voice to be heard in the College? A: We want to hear the voice of each of our students. We have a student magazine dedicated to telling student
stories and news. You could contribute your story, or get experience at interviewing others, writing articles and taking photos, or you could:
Become a course representative. Join the student forum. Perhaps become a Student Governor. Join the College’s Student Union – maybe even run for President. Q: What can you tell me about the College’s approach to equality? A: We champion equality and don’t tolerate discrimination of any kind. Better than that, we actively encourage
diversity and we want to hear different perspectives and viewpoints. For example, we celebrate Black History Month and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month. There are quiet rooms at each of our campuses, available for students of any faith to pray or meditate.
Q: I have a disability – can you give me the extra help I need? A: We have a specialist Additional Learning Support Team to give support to students with disabilities and/or
additional learning needs, e.g. if you have dyslexia. This team includes specially trained staff who can give you the support, equipment and services you need. View more info online. www.lescoco.ac.uk

Our Learning Centres are excellent for study. These are well equipped and full of resources to help you succeed.
Q: Is there anyone to go to if I need personal advice? A: Our Student Support team can give you information and guidance about a wide range of matters. They can
advise you about careers and the best route to do what you want to do with your life. They can also help you understand your progression options – from finding an apprenticeship to moving on to university. This team can also help you with more personal issues, from guidance and support to addressing housing problems. I have always been interested in business and computing and at LeSoCo there are courses available that offer a perfect combination of the two subjects. I am very interested in working for an international organisation one day so it was important that my time at LeSoCo got me as prepared as possible for university and to kick start my career. I had previously completed an internship based at the College which gave me some great experience but I really wanted to develop my technical knowledge for an all-rounded skill set. For the course I took you need to be dedicated. If you want pure IT and a bit of business this is the course for you. The teachers here are very supportive and you can learn a lot.

It’s not in every educational institution that you find tutors who truly show a passion for their students’ progress, success and happiness. You are very lucky to find this place if you do. On entry to LeSoCo this is precisely what I was greeted with. Prior to the course I did not have A Levels and I had lost interest in education. But LeSoCo gave me a chance to work in a great studio environment because they recognised my love for the subject, not just my official qualifications. I have been taught, mentored and advised by some incredible inspirational artists that have instilled in me a desire to venture into a career in fine art. After this course I was accepted onto a Fine Art History of Art Degree at Goldsmiths, which I would not have been able to do without LeSoCo. As with all teachers, you must question and enquire. But in LeSoCo’s visual arts department you will also be inspired and have your mind broadened.

Dallas Ford / Animation
Since my early teens I have always wanted to do animation. To begin with I did art and design in Sixth Form before a teacher advised me to go to LeSoCo to broaden my understanding of the subject and take my skills to the next level. LeSoCo has been a great experience for me, and my second year there was absolutely brilliant. The teachers were fantastic and helped me from the beginning to the end. Due to my great grades and my attendance, I got accepted into University of Arts London, London College of Communication studying animation. Even though I am not sure about my whole future, I have been planning ahead with the help of my tutors and it would be nice to work in an animation industry such as Dreamworks and maybe even go abroad to learn more about animation.

I have been into fashion from a very young age; I used to sew my own garments. So when I arrived in England I decided to continue my education in the world of fashion at LeSoCo. My time at the College has been filled with stimulating activities including visits to Tate Modern, collaboration with the London College of Fashion and the creation of a t-shirt for Amnesty International! I was excited by a visit to Savile Row, where I took inspiration from the bespoke tailors and decided that this was where I wanted to position myself. I plan to progress onto a three-year tailoring course and in time to have my own client base, as well as being attached to a designer. I am really passionate about fashion and have been offered a place at the London College of Fashion.

Abiodun has been a consistently dedicated student, who has conscientiously applied himself to all given tasks. He demonstrates a positive attitude to learning and often engages in independent learning to support the topics covered in class. On a recent trip to an adventure centre, Arethusa, Abiodun represented the college impeccably. Indeed during competitive tasks, he slowed down to support others, thus forfeiting his chance to win. He is always willing to help others in class and is an asset to the group and teachers alike. Indeed, Abiodun has recently been awarded with the title of ‘Best Student’ for 2012-2013, an accolade his teachers and peers consider to be well deserved. Abiodun has been accepted onto LeSoCo’s Travel and Tourism course and is looking forward to applying the knowledge he has gathered this year to progressing towards his chosen career. Of his experience of Yefe at LeSoCo, Abiodun states: “The course has helped me to build my confidence to work towards a vocational course. I am very happy to be accepted onto Travel and Tourism and I also want to do GCSEs in September. I would like to thank the tutors and the staff who helped me to get to where I am today.

My knowledge of biology is helping me understand the science behind beauty. I have always been a very academic student through my school and college life, completing A levels in biology and chemistry, however these subjects did not satisfy my need for a creative but also academically driven career. Many people do not see beauty as an academic subject but my knowledge of biology is helping me understand the science behind beauty. Only when on the course do you realise the in-depth anatomical details that beauty teaches. I was slightly unlucky in that my very first beauty treatment performed would be on the Principle of the College which was a scary experience but it all went perfect and I couldn’t have been happier! The staff are always on hand and have a very supportive nature, also the facilities are amazing and readily available for extra practice on willing friends and family. I hope to keep developing my skills and moving on to a level 3 qualification and eventually build my profile in the city by joining the Worshipful Company of Barbers & Beauticians.

Since a young age I’ve been interested in helping others, through youth work and health care. Shortly after I joined St John Ambulance I knew I wanted to work in front line medical care. To achieve my goal I began studying Health and Social Care at LeSoCo, and started on an Entry 3 course. I progressed through E3, Level 1 and achieved a Distinction+ on my Level 2. I have now progressed on to Access to Health & Human Sciences. During my three years at the College, I have been a student rep twice and have received excellent support for my dyslexia, to aid my studies. The available support in place has been very helpful to overcome my dyslexia, and being a rep has given me a greater insight about the College. Staff in the department have been supportive, encouraging, knowledgeable and helpful also. On completing my access course I hope to gain entry to a university to study Paramedic Sciences.

The Catering Course at LeSoCo really helped me find my vocation. The tutors were very approachable and having worked in the industry they had value knowledge and experience which they passed on. After leaving LeSoCo, I took up a Commis Apprentice position at Le Meridien Piccadilly, the hotel Lewisham set me up to do work experience at. Since then I have done a short stint of work at Alyn Williams At the Westbury and am currently working as a Chef De Partie at 1212 restaurant within the Royal Horseguards Hotel. My role in the team is to take charge of the Starters section, making sure the mise en place is up to a high standard and ensuring that plates leaving the kitchen during service are to the dish specifications. I have also worked on the Sauce section and can help to run the pass during a busy service. On the last menu I helped develop several dishes with Head Chef Ryan Matheson.

Joseph Holland / Sport
“
Every year at the Dallas Cup we have sports students scouted by US universities. Joe was the first LeSoCo player brave enough to take the plunge and take up a scholarship at a university in America – at the prestigious Hofstra University in New York. During his 2 years with us, Joe developed hugely as a player due to his dedication to self-improvement and practice. He would often stay behind after training, with Maidstone United’s Fabio Saraiva, to practise all aspects of his game. Joe scored a remarkable 22 goals from midfield in the ‘Invincibles’ team of 2011-12 that went the entire season undefeated in the FCYA league. Academically, his performances were of the highest calibre too. He gained distinctions in his BTEC national qualification with us, as well as A-Levels at night school. Joe returned from the US to take up a place on the Nike academy for a shot at pro football, and is now employed coaching for us at the academy.

This course gave me the chance to experience and research other cultures, which is where my real passion lies. The course is fascinating and helped me develop my skills in this challenging and customer-focused industry. I didn’t just learn from reading a textbook, and there is more to the course than simply completing assignments. The travel and tourism students get to put on events to educate people about other cultures and I get a huge personal reward from informing friends and family about the rest of the world.
