Thank you for taking the time to read through our Tool Kit, your guide to Growing Beautifully with Monrovia. Each year, during the second half, we review our successes and opportunities from spring and use these to refine our strategic initiatives. This year, our initiatives focus on the development of a long-term Elite Partnership with our retail and re-wholesale customers, and expanding our mutual relationship with consumers. Both initiatives strengthen the relationship between Monrovia, our customers, and today’s gardening consumer. Our Elite Partnership initiative redefines how we will do business together by focusing on specific activities. These include the use of digital advertising, in-store merchandising, inventory management, staff training, and online sales. This fall we will ask 300 customers to join us as Elite Partners as we formally launch the program. This year we began curating a database of plant information and gardening content which will be used to enhance our consumer relationship. Beginning next spring, consumers will register their Monrovia plants and gardens online or at a garden center at time of purchase. This will allow us to provide them ongoing care information that’s timely, regional and plant specific. Each consumer will also register with a participating garden center as their local resource for additional gardening products and care advice. We expect gardening consumers will enjoy the personalized information they receive from their local garden center and Monrovia. This Sales Tool Kit provides details of our current sales programs and initiatives, and all of the tools necessary for you and your Monrovia Sales Representative to plan your business. I hope you find the information useful and will consider joining us as an Elite Partner this fall. Thank you,
David W. Kirby Vice President of Sales, Monrovia

W H ILE THERE ARE MANY K I ND S O F GAR D ENERS —plant
nerds, solution seekers, or just for the Zen of it—there is one thing all gardeners have in common—they love to share. Which is why we’re putting much of our emphasis over the next few years on growing our digital community where gardeners can learn, teach, and inspire each other (and us!). We want you, our partner, to be a part of this vibrant world of enthusiastic, engaged gardeners, and to use all of the tools we have developed to help you reach and expand your own community.
H OW A R E W E R E AC H I N G T H E M ? 1 . Digital
and social media and search optimization both paid and organic.
2 . Providing
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)-driven, timely info on topics such as container gardening, landscaping solutions, and working with designers.
3 . Working
with bloggers and influencers (an individual who has the power to affect purchase decisions of others) to drive exponential growth in the digital community.
W H O ARE OUR GA R D ENERS ?
Demographics can only tell you so much about who your consumers are. That’s why we use psychographics to better understand the different reasons why people garden and what they need from us. (Psychographics is the study and classification of people according to their attitudes, aspirations, and other psychological criteria, especially in market research.)
F I N A L LY…
Creating a community means creating content that speaks to a range of levels of gardening expertise, and familiarity and comfort with different platforms. To that end, we encourage and support new gardeners with the tools and information they need to be successful. We also keep more experienced gardeners engaged and with fresh ideas and inspirations. Our goal is to meet consumers where they live. The range of tools we use -- technique teaching videos, planting ideas and problem solving blog posts, visually exciting e-blasts and newsletters, social media feeds— convey our passion and knowledge for the subject.
We categorize our gardeners in three groups (see page 7 for more): D E DICATED —live
to garden, love plants, frequent shoppers P RACTICAL —focus
on problem solving and value low-fuss plants regardless of cost ZE N —strong
connection to nature, impulse shoppers

THIS ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE ELITE PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM is the culmination of our strategic sales and marketing plans from the last four years. It redefines how we, as a company, will do business with select garden centers and re-wholesale distribution centers. The Elite Partnership attracts consumers and landscape professionals by offering them inspiration, information, and the ability to purchase plants using an integrated shopping experience, both online and at a retail or re-wholesale establishment. The Partnership focuses on the following five components of business: 1. Digital Marketing 2. E-commerce 3. Inventory Management 4. In Store Merchandising 5. Sales Training Underlying the Par tnership is four years of proprietary consumer research that divides shoppers into four primary demographics or “personas” as follows: Practical 46% Zen 23% Dedicated 21% Apprehensive 10% Total Gardening Consumers
100%
Each persona has slightly different shopping behaviors and each is therefore approached differently. “Practical Gardeners” are functional gardeners, driven by the desire to “solve a problem”. Knowing how to convey gardening solutions is vital to engaging this persona. “Zen Gardeners” find relaxation from their garden and seek of a “place of their own to rest”. Offering plants that “Grow Beautifully” are a key to this persona. “Dedicated Gardeners” identify gardening as a core passion, and “Apprehensive Gardeners” lack confidence that they will be successful in the garden. We track changes in the shopping behaviors of each persona. For example, Dedicated Gardeners are shifting away from “do it yourself ” to “do it for me” and are more often utilizing the services of landscape professionals. Our annual trends report is a useful, insightful guide to the purchasing behaviors in our industry. It is based on research, and influences our messages to consumers. The heart of the Elite Partnership is a consumer database and digital technology that allows us to convey to each persona why our Elite Par tners are in business. We respectfully submit that when consumers know “why”, it will transform their appreciation of their gardens and landscapes. In turn, they will become our advocates and loyal suppor ters.

1
DIGITAL MARKETING
The first component of the Elite Partnership is digital advertising and marketing. The Elite Partnership uses geo-targeted digital technologies to reach consumers that shop in proximity of our Elite Partners. Last year we delivered nearly 150MM digital advertisements with specific calls to action inviting consumers to “Find a Garden Center,” “Visit our Website,” or “Shop Online.” These messages were designed specifically to reach each of our targeted personas. As noted above, these messages will contain emotional and inspirational information that is targeted to each persona. We are mindful of the key role that content and use of images plays for consumers. Accordingly, we are building an extensive database of videos and images. Today we can follow the trends of each persona and adjust our messaging accordingly. For example, we can target the messages to top market areas and to a specific consumer who, for example, (1.) owns a home, (2.) purchased plants this year and (3.) has income over $75K. We intend to refine this targeting further with our Elite Partners. Together we will also utilize social media campaigns that share content and follow our annual editorial calendar (pp. 18-20).
2
E-COMMERCE
The second component of Elite Partnership Program is E-commerce or online shopping. We know consumers are researching and shopping online more than ever before. Over the last four years we have refined the online shopping experience at shop.monrovia.com with highly responsive search functions and inspiring content. The success of the online component is further enhanced by the fact that consumers either pick up their plant purchases at your store or arrange delivery with you. Driving the consumer to your business to “shop for more” is a key benefit of the program. In 2018 we improved online shopping by adding a link or button to our participating garden center’s websites and by asking them to promote shop.monrovia.com with in-store signage. As an Elite Partner participating in shop.monrovia.com, you will receive 40% of the total online purchase in the form of a quarterly rebate check. We will retain 40% of the total online purchase, and the additional 20% will be used for a marketing budget specifically for shop.monrovia.com. Competing online and getting new consumers through your door are specific challenges in our industry, and shop.monrovia.com offers our Elite Partners a solution to both.
3
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT
The third component of the Elite Partnership Program is proper inventory management. Stocking up in spring with the correct quantity of the right plants and maintaining proper replenishment levels will determine success or failure in any given year. Industry experts claim that the most profitable garden centers maintain 60%-70% of their total store inventory in live goods. We will work with each Elite Partner to create a multi-year forecast that is separated into sixmonth periods, spring and fall. Prior to each six month period, we will jointly update your order and ensure that you have access to more of our featured and exclusive introductions. We will ship these plants “just in time”, as they reach prime market condition according to pre-planned shipment dates. This will insure you have more of the right plants on time and in prime condition each season.

4
MERCHANDISING
The fourth component of the Elite Partnership Program is merchandising. We will create a merchandising plan that’s based on your multi-year forecast and aligned with our annual editorial calendar. Today’s consumer is brand-loyal, so it’s important that your Monrovia plants are prominently displayed in a highly visible shopping area. We will work together to create a dedicated merchandising area and incorporate Monrovia signage, featured plants, and mannequin displays.

5
SALES TRAINING
The fifth component of the Elite Partnership Program is the sales training provided to your staff. Execution of the program at store level will ensure an integrated shopping experience that satisfies our consumer brand advocates. We will provide a “spring kick-off ” meeting for your employees including segments on “Why Monrovia”, product knowledge, marketing, consumer insights, and detail of our merchandising plan. We will follow up with sales training and refresher courses throughout the year.
SUMMARY The Elite Partnership provides a platform to significantly enhance our relationships with consumers and with each other. This fall we invite you to sign up as an Elite Par tner with a full rollout taking place throughout 2019 and 2020. In 2020 a por tion of our EPP volume discount program will be based on marketing and participation in our Elite Partnership program. The measure of our mutual success will be the extent which gardening consumers come to trust, enjoy and rely upon each of us to be the preferred solution for all their gardening needs star ting with plants that “Grow Beautifully”.
Digital Marketing OUR ADS ARE SMART We use geo-targeted digital technologies to reach consumers that shop in proximity (within 10 miles) of our Elite Partners. OUR GOAL IS SIMPLE: To generate interest in Monrovia, and drive foot traffic to Garden Centers.

Reliable rebloomers that flush with flowers several times of the growing season. Even in warmer, more humid zones where hydrangeas can sometimes struggle? Yes! All have compact and tidy habits (4’ by 4’ mature size) ideal for foundations, colorful low borders, lining a walkway, or just planted in a large container. Thicker leaves and flower with a waxy texture that better tolerate summer heat, rainy humidity, or windy conditions. Sturdier thick stems that don’t flop over under the weight of large flower heads. Make a fantastic cut flower due to those stronger stems that stand up straight in a vase and last longer.
Seaside Serenade® is our new collection of breezy, fresh, and beautiful hydrangeas bred with truly notable improvements that make a everyone’s favorite, classic summer bloomer perform even better for longer in the landscape or containers.
