What if there’s no news one week?
I Maria Santiago
t’s been a difficult issue this week. Not many big games are being released and news of any games is generally thin on the ground. As a result, we’re a little bit late. We hope you don’t mind. Please accept our apologies. The monthly magazines maybe have it easier as they can wait a few weeks to see what the news is, what the latest developments are. But on a weekly, if there’s nothing interesting in a given week, what do we do? We did consider this question before and we simply decided that if there’s no interesting stories one week, we just won’t publish that week. But it’s too tempting to publish – we like seeing the pages of the magazine, and then seeing that other people are reading the magazine. We’ll just have to wait and see what we decide. l

J
agex Games Studio, makers of the upcoming Transformers Universe MMO, is offering fans the opportunity of naming the Autobot and Decepticon factions in two of the game’s classes. In polls running this week, fans will have the chance to vote for the names of both the Autobot and Decepticon Transformers characters in one of the player classes that will be in the game at launch. There will be a variety of pre-assigned names to choose from, but in a twist to proceedings Jagex is also allowing fans the chance to suggest their own recommendation. Furthermore, the MMO community will be given another poll to name the Autobot and Decepticon of a second player class exclusively on mmorpg.com. The site, one of the largest MMO news, reviews and community destinations in the world, will be the first to reveal the class, ready to be named, as they announce the poll to give fans the chance to be a part of the creation of this massive MMO. Managing Editor Bill Murphy said: “This is a truly exciting event for MMO and Transformers fans to have a chance to do and we are really just ecstatic to be exclusively hosting one of the polls. Fan and player involvement at this stage of development is unprecedented and I think people will be floored to have a chance at influencing the names of two of the classes in this hugely anticipated game. The most popular name from each vote will be revealed shortly after the voting closes. l

W
arner Bros Interactive Entertainment releases new 360 degree screenshots, giving unhindered views of the new regions of Middle-earth awaiting exploration in the November 25th game, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. These interactive screenshots give expansive views of the game, offering full perspective on these unexplored lands and threats of the North. The Fellowship of Human, Elf and Dwarf are surrounded by Agandaûr’s minions – but there is hope while the company is true. One image shows Mirkwood, lying to the east of the Misty Mountains. This dark, heavily forested area is home to the Elves – but due to its dark, uncultivated landscape it also attracts evil. The second image displays the frozen vista of Mount Gundabad, at the intersection of the two mountain ranges – the Misty Mountains and the Grey Mountains. Previously a sacred land for the Dwarf race, it has fallen to the orcs, and become one of their most powerful strongholds. l

“The theme of galactic war in Mass Effect 3 presents us with the perfect opportunity to introduce multiplayer into the Mass Effect series,” said Casey Hudson, Executive Producer of the Mass Effect series. “Multiplayer not only features amazing combat and deep customization options, but it will give players another way to help the war effort against the Reapers in the main event – the single player campaign.” Featuring four-player cooperative gameplay, multiplayer in Mass Effect 3 puts players in the role of a team of elite Special Forces soldiers sent to protect resources and assets that can help the war effort against the Reapers. Players will have the option of playing as one of six classes and from six different races: Human, Krogan, Asari, Drell, Salarian and Turian. Multiplayer and other components of the Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War system provide alternative ways for players to wage the final war against the Reapers. The new system will also connect players to their BioWare Social Network accounts to stay up to date on the latest Mass Effect 3 news and access downloadable content (DLC) and add-ons. l

Potions, lakes and Link’s whip among revealed elements in the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
N
intendo has revealed another set of details about the fascinating areas, items and game play in the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword game, which will launch exclusively for the Wii system on November 20. Following last week’s unveiling of new information about the Faron Woods area of the game, fans can now glimpse additional details about this and other areas, plus a sneak peek at how players can maneuver Link through watery environments and help him wield a whip using the Wii Remote Plus controller. Newly revealed game elements include the following: l Lake Floria and the Parella Tribe: Later in his quest, Link must make his way to an as-yet-undiscovered section of the Faron Woods that is home to Lake Floria. The lake is inhabited by the squid-like Parella tribe, which makes its first appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Even when revisiting past areas like Faron Woods, players will make new discoveries and, occasionally, find drastic changes to the environment that require them to explore these areas in entirely different ways. l Swimming: As one might expect, getting to and exploring Lake Floria requires Link to swim. The intuitive motion control of the Wii Remote Plus gives players a natural way to control Link as he swims across the lake’s surface or into its watery depths. l Insects and Potions: Throughout the game, Link travels back and forth between the surface and Skyloft. Players can collect bugs in the various areas they visit, and these insects can be used to infuse new ingredients into the variety of different potions available

for purchase at the bazaar in Skyloft, giving the potions powerful new effects. Players can experiment with different potions and insects to find the concoctions that best meet their needs. l Fun Fun Island: Also new in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is Fun Fun Island, one of the small islands that float above the clouds near Link’s hometown. As the name suggests, there’s a lot of fun to be had there, but before Link can enjoy everything the island has to offer, he must find a way to fulfill the request of its lone inhabitant. l Whip: Players can use the Wii Remote Plus to lash Link’s whip at enemies and objects. The whip also can be used to grab items and is integral to solving certain puzzles. Link’s items can be selected in real time without pausing the game when he is on the ground, making it easier to switch between a sword

and other items. Nintendo will continue to regularly provide fans with select details and information about the game prior to its November 20 launch. Additionally, every copy in the initial production runs of the game will come packaged with a special music CD containing orchestral arrangements of select songs that will be performed at the upcoming The Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony Concert. Spidey’s latest pulse-pounding adventure.” Playing as the two extremely different personas of Peter Parker and Miguel O’Hara, both heroic web-slingers must urgently work together to correct a timestream gone awry, save each other, and prevent the death of the Amazing Spider-Man. With the story’s two timelines evolving in parallel, each Super Hero must navigate through “cause-andeffect” gameplay moments, utilising SpiderMan: Edge of Time’s picture-in-picture display where the actions of one Spider-Man can result in immediate, and sometimes unexpected, effects on the other Spider-Man and his surroundings. Players will battle a variety of fan-favourite and all-new villains, including Anti-Venom and Black Cat 2099, using expanded combat abilities specific to each timeline – from Spider-Man 2099’s close-quarters brute force, futuristic enhancements and gravity-defying acrobatics, to the Amazing Spider-Man’s evasive techniques, upgraded web abilities and ranged tactics, as they race against time to preserve the balance of both worlds. The game includes an all-star voice cast, beginning with legendary film star Val Kilmer as Walker Sloan; Smallville and V mainstay Laura Vandervoort as Mary Jane; Battlestar Galactica’s Katee Sackhoff as Black Cat; “The Spectacular Spider-Man’s” Josh Keaton as the Amazing Spider-Man; and Christopher Daniel Barnes, who voiced the iconic Marvel webslinger in the 1994 “Spider-Man” series, as the voice of Spider-Man 2099. Spider-Man: Edge of Time is PEGI rated 16 and is available on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, Wii and Nintendo 3DS, all developed by Beenox. The Nintendo 3DS edition marks the debut of Spider-Man on Nintendo’s newest platform. A Nintendo DS version, created by developer Other Ocean, is also available and features a platforming adventure full of unique villains, such as the first-ever appearances of Overdrive, Arcade and Big Wheel 2099, created exclusively for this version. l

Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure’s boundless multi-modal, cross-platform play is a watershed for both the toy and videogame industries, and for young gamers seeking genuinely innovative and exciting digital adventure. Kids can collect more than 30 characters, each with their own powers and personality; and each expands the gameplay experience. The sinister Portal Master Kaos has cast them out of the Skylands and banished them to earth, where they are frozen and appear to look like toys. But they are very much alive on the inside and only young gamers can free them by placing them on the Portal of Power so they can return to the Skylands and defeat Kaos. Activision united in-house talent with top Hollywood talent to create Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure’s unique world. The game and technology were developed by Activision’s Novato, California studio, Toys for Bob, led by creative director and studio head Paul Reiche. The adventure-driven story was penned by Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen, two of the Academy Award-nominated writers of the original Toy Story movie, Academy Awardwinning composer, Hans Zimmer, created the game’s theme song and Lorne Balfe composed the score. Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure includes a vast single player adventure, co-op gameplay, battle modes, puzzle solving and treasure hunts. The result is a line of highly collectible characters, an engaging story and an unparalleled interactive entertainment experience. The game is rated PEGI 7. l
