Blizzard keeps Diablo fans waiting, but offers insights Blizzard offers Skill Calculator and PayPal in-game transactions for Diablo III

19 September 2011
B
lizzard has announced that fans of the Diablo game series may not have to wait too much longer for the beta release of the third installment, possibly later this month. And while the company makes everyone wait for Diablo 3, it is releasing some details about what to expect in the new game. Among them is the facility for players to be able to in-game transactions with real money, using PayPal. To some, this may not be news as the company had announced the idea last year. However, many people had criticised the idea and it was thought that Blizzard would change its mind. But it hasn’t, and has confirmed that realworld money will be used for transactions. In a statement, Blizzard said: “We’re pleased to announce that in most regions, PayPal will be our payment-service partner for the Diablo III auction house, allowing players who trade with real-world currency the ability to cash out the spoils of their battle-torn adventures via a PayPal account. “PayPal will also soon be added in several regions as a payment option on Battle.net,

providing another convenient and secure payment method for digital purchases of Blizzard products and services. We’ll share region-related specifics, as well as further details on everything mentioned above, in the near future.” Another important development is the Skill Calculator, which has already gone live on Diablo 3’s official website. The Skill Calculator enables users to plan out their character’s active and passive skills before the game is eventually released. Diablo fans can select from one of the five classes, choose six active skills, three passive spells, and add runestones. Additionally it allows you to share the build you have created with friends, according to videogamer.com. l

lizzard Entertainment has lifted the curtain on its Diablo III community site in anticipation of the forthcoming game and the Diablo 3 beta. Diablo’s third incarnation does not yet have a release date but Blizzard has now announed that a beta version of the dark fantasy horror action RPG will be launched very soon – perhaps by the end of September. Meanwhile, the company advises fans to join the Diablo III community and check for the latest developments. “You’ll want to check out the new Diablo III news feed regularly. We’ll use it to share everything about Diablo III and to highlight recent community activity, including your most entertaining videos, art, comics,

fansites, and much more,” says Blizzard. Diablo III is similar in style to its predecessor, Diablo II, according to Blizzard’s information. The proprietary engine will incorporate Blizzard’s custom in-house physics, a change from the original usage of Havok’s physics engine, and feature destructible environments with an in-game damage effect. The developers are aiming to make the game run on a wide range of systems, and have stated that DirectX 10 will not be required. Diablo is Blizzard’s second-best selling game franchise after World of Warcraft. The earlier versions of Diablo are estimated to have sold in excess of 18.5 million units, only half a million behind WoW. The company is hoping that Diablo III will be its best-selling yet. l

W
arner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced Mortal Kombat, the latest iteration of the legendary fighting franchise, has sold over three million units worldwide, making it the highest-selling fighting game this year. Mortal Kombat, developed by NetherRealm Studios, led by Mortal Kombat creator and creative director Ed Boon, launched on PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft in April 2011. In addition to the full game available at retail, downloadable content (DLC) has been released for the game offering four warriors, including the return of fan favorites Skarlet, Kenshi and

Rain and an all-new competitor in the coliseum - legendary dream stalker Freddy Krueger - who now features two vicious bladed gloves. Each DLC character comes with his or her own move set, arcade ladder story ending, and two deadly fatalities. “We are very pleased with the success of Mortal Kombat, as it surpassed our expectations in becoming the #1 fighting game in North America released so far this year,” said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment. “NetherRealm Studios delivered a high quality game which has exceeded our sales goals. and tremendous support of Mortal Kombat, as the game sales continue to grow.” “All of us at NetherRealm Studios are very excited that players have embraced Mortal Kombat. The game was a labor of love for us and we could not be more pleased with its performance,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “Fan reaction to this latest installment has made all of our hard work worth it.” Mortal Kombat is a triumphant return to the game’s original mature presentation offering over-the-top fatalities and cringe-worthy X-ray moves. Going back to a 2D fighting plane, this latest iteration in the franchise introduces a number of new game-play features including Tag Team, Challenge Tower, and a deep story mode. Players can choose from an extensive lineup of the game’s iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1 matches, or take on several players in the new online King of the Hill mode. The legendary fighting game is now available in the UK on the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360. l

S
ony Online Entertainment announced a new free-to-play business model for its popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) game DC Universe Online (DCUO) — where players have the freedom to become legendary fighting alongside DC Comics icons like Superman, Batman and The Joker in an ever-evolving online action adventure that has already logged more than 42 million hours of super-powered gameplay action by players since its launch earlier this year. Beginning late October, players will be able to download and access DCUO for free on both the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and PC. As part of this transition, SOE is introducing three new access levels to the game: Free, Premium and Legendary. All three levels will provide access to open world gameplay and missions, general game updates and fixes to the game, with each level offering different game options and benefits. “When we launched DC Universe Online, we introduced a very different brand of massive online game driven by fast action combat to PC and PS3 gamers and with that, we discovered a new type of online gamer,” said John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment. “We’ve listened to our community, and we’ve determined that the free-to-play model is the best fit for DC Universe Online.” Smedley added, “Our philosophy embraces learning from our experience and as a pioneer in the free-to-play space with proven successful games like Free Realms and Clone Wars Adventures, we believe this new model will expand the DCUO experience and offer more options that cater to every type of player so they can play the game in a way that fits them.” All three levels provide access to the current game, but allow differing tiers of convenience and flexibility.
