wrote this opening note last week hoping to express my gratitude and to thank you for reading Computer Games magazine. But I missed a typo and a simple “thank you” ended up as a “than you”. I don’t think anybody else really worries as much as we do about these things, but it really bothered me. We work very hard producing this magazine and the website – technologymarket.eu – and small mistakes like that can undermine our efforts. Luckily, there weren’t many more mistakes – in fact, I can’t remember any significant ones apart from that one. Mistakes can happen, no matter how big or how talented your team. But the important thing is to acknowledge them and do your best to rectify them. Which is what Tripwire have been doing with Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad. (See story inside the magazine.) l

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron video game planned for 2012
A
ctivision has said that it is planning to release Transformers: Fall of Cybertron in 2012. “Gamers will finally experience the epic battles that shaped the history of the Autobots and Decepticons with the fall 2012 release of Activision Publishing’s Transformers: Fall of Cybertron,” said the company. Currently in development by the acclaimed team at High Moon Studios, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron takes fans through the final, darkest hours of the civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons as they fight for control of their dying planet, ultimately leading to their storied exodus from home. More information about the upcoming game can be found in the November 2011 cover story of Game Informer magazine on sale beginning October 14, which will feature never before seen artwork and dual, limited edition covers. “High Moon Studios is an extremely talented development team having raised the bar of gameplay and Transformers authenticity in their games,” said David Oxford, Executive Vice President at Activision Publishing. “Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is an extraordinary project both for the studio and the Transformers gaming legacy – the stakes are higher and the scale much larger than ever before, and we absolutely cannot wait for fans to see all the new characters and epic action that awaits them.” “Hasbro has worked hand in hand with Activision to create a fully original storyline that details the climactic battles leading to the famed exodus of the Transformers characters from Cybertron,” said Mark Blecher, SVP of Digital Media and Marketing, Hasbro. “Our team at Hasbro is looking forward to exploring and expanding the Transformers story again with an incredible blockbuster video game that will blow fans away next year.” l

Fate of the World: Tipping Point launches for Windows, Mac
T
he global economy is headed toward collapse, revolutions are breaking out across the Middle East, famine is ravaging Africa and the world is approaching a peak oil crisis. No, these are not headlines ripped from the news; these are the challenges facing Windows and Mac gamers in Fate of the World: Tipping Point from Red Redemption. This next entry into Red Redemption’s Fate of the World series is a hardcore strategy game that puts players in hypothetical situations within a realistic world, with threatening scenarios based on the latest science and modeling technologies covering the next two centuries. Players must balancing economic, political and environmental needs in order to save the world (or destroy it). The game’s engine recreates the incredibly complicated interactions and unanticipated consequences caused as players make governmental policy changes to address major tipping points (such as the collapse of the Antarctic ice shelf). As global crises spread, players have to decide what is worth saving and what is an acceptable sacrifice. “Most gamers might think, ‘Oh, I can just switch to electric cars, get rid of fossil fuels and make everyone a vegan’ and that will make me win. The real world doesn’t work that way and neither will that let you conquer our game,” said Ian Roberts, Creative Director, Red Redemption. “Switch land use to growing biofuels and you may start a famine. Drastically reduce fossil fuel use in favor of solar and you can drive economies into depressions. There are no perfect solutions in Tipping Point to address things like global warming.” Tipping Point incorporates all the

elements of the original game and adds new features, missions, achievements and UI enhancements. Major new additions include: l Easy Game Mode – Saving the world seem impossible? Easy mode makes it merely improbable l New Cards – Brings an even bigger arsenal of actions that players can take to change political, social, technology, energy and environmental policies l The Flood – Wars and famine force

Climate Challenge for the BBC. Fate of the World required two years of research with groups like United Nations, World Health Organization, Central Intelligence Agency, International Energy Agency, and The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to get the content. Red Redemption also worked with the National Climate Data Center, Asheville-Buncombe Sustainable Communities Initiative, Climate Interactive and multiple other organizations in Washington DC including the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies and Oxfam. This data was used to make a number of models to simulate real world outcomes such as carbon emissions, economic change, resource depletion and population growth. The carbon emissions in the game were converted into temperature changes with a peer-reviewed gas climate model by Dr. Myles Allen of Oxford University (the ‘trillionth tonne’ model as published in Nature). Allen, a former member of the United Nations Environment Program in Kenya, former director of Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute and a former member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, has been a key advisor on the project. Allen currently heads the Climate Dynamics Group in the Department of Physics at Oxford University where his research focuses on how human and natural influences on climate contribute to observed climate change and extreme weather risk. of Kaineng; the Jade Brotherhood and the Am Fah. The gangs have long been a threat that has existed within Canthan life – the empire is not strong enough to stop them. The Am Fah and Jade Brotherhood have continuously been at war with each other, and their struggle keeps them from being enough to threaten the empire directly. The three have existed as a system of checks and balances against each other – an uneasy balance of power that threatens to boil over into violence at any given moment. Under the leadership of Minister Reiko, the Ministry of Purity has declared that the gangs’ reign of fear must come to an end, by any means necessary. In this second instalment of the three-part Winds of Change the conflict between the Ministry of Purity and the gangs escalates. The Jade Brotherhood and the Am Fah find themselves pushed back and resorting to desperate, destructive measures to retaliate. Some people begin to wonder – is the price being paid for security worth it? Where will the line be drawn for what is considered a threat? The motives of the Ministry of Purity become suspect with the arrival of an Assassin that has historical ties to the Ministry’s leadership. The players find themselves caught in the middle of this struggle as loyalties shift and tensions boil over. Change has come to Cantha – but will the land be able to survive it? l
G
uild Wars Beyond continues with the second chapter of Winds of Change, the largest free content expansion in Guild Wars to date. This release sees the addition of 11 more quests, five respawned zones, and more hidden scenes for players looking to experience the story to the fullest. In the previous instalment, players were introduced to the Ministry of Purity, an organisation that sought to bring peace and order back to an embattled Cantha. The Ministry began their righteous crusade by seeking to purge the land of the Afflicted – horrors unleashed during the events of Guild Wars Factions. The Ministry rallied the people to its cause under the belief that Cantha was a land that did not need heroes; only people with the strength and the will to stand up for themselves. From these simple beginnings, the Ministry grew in size and gained influence as the Afflicted were purged from the lands. People disillusioned with Cantha’s emperor for his inability to protect them looked to the Ministry as a source of hope. As the players vanquished the last of the Afflicted, the Ministry of Purity soon set their sights on their next target: the gangs

Tripwire irons out rough edges in Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad Tripwire Interactive has been trying to fix some issues with Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad
16

T
ripwire Interactive has reported “smashing success” for its hit game Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad. In a statement, the company explained: “By most business measures Red Orchestra 2 has been a smashing success for Tripwire Interactive. Within 2 days of the launch of the game it had surpassed the lifetime revenue of the original Red Orchestra that has been selling for over 5 years.” The pre-sales and launch week sales of the game broke all company records, said Tripwire, beating out another of the company’s hit games, Killing Floor, by a three-fold margin. “But for all of this success we’ve not done

as well as we would have liked in the most important area to us – the happiness of all of our customers,” said Tripwire. “To put it bluntly, the game had a rough launch. We’ve been working diligently since launch to get these issues sorted and have made great progress fixing issues with matchmaking, VOIP, and stability as well as improving performance. The final major area that we’ve been working on is stats, player progression and ranking.” Tripwire said it has now fixed all of the major issues with the stats system and released an update to address these issues. The company has decided to do a global reset of all stats for the game. This means all

achievements, stats and player progression will be rolled back as if all players were new. “This was not an easy decision for us to make, but one we felt we needed to do to preserve the integrity of the stats and ranking system, and to provide all of the players the best experience with the game over the long term,” said Tripwire. “Knowing that there are people that have been playing the game for a few weeks now and will lose the stats for that time we are going to provide a special bonus to all players. For the next few weeks all players will earn double experience in Red Orchestra 2.” This means if a player plays the game during the double experience period they will quickly get their experience up to where they would have been had these issues never existed. Additionally, the company will give those playing the game during the double experience period a special achievement called “In B4 Reset”. Right now this is just an achievement, but Tripwire is looking at ways to give special rewards to the players that have this achievement in the future. “Thank you to all of the players that have made Red Orchestra 2 a hit so far,” said Tripwire. “We’ve got a lot of exciting things in store with free content coming for the game so stay tuned over the coming weeks for more news on that front.” l

Forza 4 soundtrack features award-winning composer and producer Lance Hayes
F
ollowing the critically acclaimed soundtrack for Forza Motorsport 3, ASCAP award-winning composer and producer Lance Hayes (aka DJDM) returns to provide custom music for Forza Motorsport 4 developed by Turn 10 Studios of Microsoft Game Studios. Lance Hayes’ original soundtrack for Forza Motorsport 3 was hailed as one of the best electronic albums of 2010 by G4 TV. Created exclusively for the Xbox 360, Forza Motorsport 4 is scheduled for release on 11th October, 2011. Working closely with Turn 10 Studios, the creators of the Forza Motorsport franchise, Lance Hayes crafted definitive musical statements to complement the new look and feel of Forza Motorsport 4. The new soundtrack features a broad range of music styles and overall chill demeanor encompassing primarily electronica, ambient and downtempo with forays into ambient breaks, illbient and acid jazz. Audio Director Nick Wiswell: “The music of Lance Hayes is an integral component of the UI of Forza Motorsport 4, as it was in Forza Motorsport 3. The menus in Forza Motorsport 4 are vast and many players will spend hours in them setting up tuning options or creating

liveries; Lance has provided 15 songs to make this experience as enjoyable and varied as possible for the player. “He also produced 4 tracks for the in-game race soundtrack which are very different in tempo, scope and feel, showing the breadth of his compositional skills.” Composer Lance Hayes: “I was honored to be brought back to work on an expanded soundtrack creating over 100 minutes of music for the UI as well as the in-game experience. “The score has an increased cinematic feel as well as incorporating many of the styles (downtempo, electronic, ambient) that made the Forza 3 OST a fan favorite.” The highest-rated racing franchise of this generation returns. Unrivaled in its innovation and quality, Forza Motorsport 4 pushes the racing genre forward, delivering the most stunning graphics ever seen on the Xbox 360 platform, radical experiences only possible with Kinect, groundbreaking social features through Xbox LIVE and a landslide of new content, cars and new ways to play. Launching this October exclusively on Xbox 360, Forza Motorsport 4 is an entirely new automotive experience. l

SEGA plans Yakuza: Dead Souls in Europe in March
S
EGA of America and SEGA Europe have announced that the much anticipated ‘Yakuza Of The End’ will be available in the West in March 2012. Renamed Yakuza: Dead Souls, this next iteration of the iconic Japanese series will be available exclusively to PlayStation 3 system owners and will feature the entire storyline, Japanese downloadable content and a brand new mini-game Pachislot. Yakuza: Dead Souls is set in the infamous red light district of Tokyo, which is under attack from hordes of zombies. Players will not only face armies of the undead and incredibly powerful mutants, but a treacherous Japanese underworld that is just as merciless. Playing through the eyes of four of the most infamous characters of the series, witness allegiances shift quickly and the line between

friend and foe lost. If you thought zombies were bad… meet the Yakuza. “We know how much people love Yakuza in the West and with Dead Souls being the latest and greatest in the franchise, it is only right we bring it to them closer to the Japanese release than ever,” said Gary Knight, Senior Vice President of Marketing at SEGA. Yakuza: Dead Souls features gunplay for the first time in the Yakuza series, where everything from pistols, machine guns and rocket launchers can be employed against the zombie invasion. Just remember to save some ammo in case you run into something even more terrifying than the zombies. With all the depth and story of a Yakuza title, plus the addition of exciting shoot-outs and previously unplayable characters Ryuji Goda and Goro Majima, Yakuza: Dead Souls is worth dying for. l
