The Arts Council of Big Sky (ACBS) is pleased to be hosting its third annual fundraising art auction event on Thursday, March 26th, at the Lone Mountain Ranch from 5 to 8 PM. The event is sponsored by Big Sky Sotheby’s International Realty. Tickets to the event are limited and are $50 each, which includes heavy appetizers from chef Nick Steen at the Ranch and two drink tickets good for draft beer or house wine. Tickets are now available and can only be purchased by phone at (406) 995-2742. “We’re excited to bring in these amazing artists and showcase them to the Big Sky community,” says ACBS Executive Director Brian Hurlbut. “We feel this is a fun and different event for Big Sky, and anyone who appreciates fine art and delicious food is encouraged to attend.” The evening begins at 5 PM, with a Quick “Finish” session with well-known painters Tom Gilleon, Harry Koyama, Shirle Wempner, Laurie Stevens, Julie Chapman and Tom English, along with sculptor Greg Woodard. These artists will be finishing their work during the first part of the event; the final pieces will be auctioned off later in the evening. People are encouraged to come early and watch as the pieces come to life, are finished and then framed in front of them. Appetizers will be passed around and the ranch saloon will be open with a full bar. Light jazz

music from the Craig Hall Trio will be playing as well. New this year is a silent auction component, featuring artists from Big Sky and Bozeman, including: Jackie Rainford Corcoran, Jill Zeidler, Ryan Turner, Ariane Coleman, Craig Hergert, Shelly Bermont, Paula Pearl, Todd Connor, Kira Fercho, Greg Darden and Mike Stoner. A dinner for four at the new Moonlight Tavern will also be part of the silent auction. The live auction for the artwork will take place at 7:30 p.m., with a professional auctioneer getting the bidding going in the Lone Mountain Ranch dining room. Half of the proceeds from the art auction will go directly to the Arts Council of Big Sky, to help offset the costs of producing more than 15 events throughout the year—many of them free. This is a great way to acquire some incredible artwork and contribute to the Arts Council. “This fundraiser makes a statement about the direction the Arts Council is headed,” notes Vice President of Development Tallie Lancey. “We're a volunteer-driven non-profit group of passionate individuals who work to serve the artistic and cultural demands of our entire community. We need financial support to continue our growth.” For more information on this amazing event, please call the Arts Council at (406) 995-2742 or visit www.bigskyarts.org.

Jeans and Jewels: 35th Annual Big Sky School District Pie Auction

Saturday, March 21st, 7PM Buck’s T4 Lodge The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is starting to gather a list of pie donors. We welcome your culinary creations in the way of pies, cakes or whatever you see fit. Some bakers like to keep in theme (a real challenge this year) and some prefer a classic or traditional approach to their sweet treat. Of course, we welcome all of these! If you are interested in donating a pie, please email Krisy Hammond at krisyscotth@gmail.com and let us know. The Pie Auction team kicked off this year’s Pie Auction Raffle Sales efforts at the school on February 25th, with the youngest student in each family receiving a raffle bag with everything needed to make the 35th Anniversary a huge success! Raffle prizes this year feature “365 Days of Big Sky” and include: • 365 Days of Pizza – One pizza per month for a year from Ousel & Spur; • 365 Days of Tea – One year Tea of the Month membership from Yellowstone Tea Company; • 365 Days of Coffee – Latte a day for one year from Big Sky Coffee & Tea; • 365 Days of Bread – One loaf a week from Blue Moon Bakery; and • 365 Days of Gas – $1000 gas card from Conoco. To thank everyone for helping, there are prizes for the top three sellers (K-12) and any family who sells at least one ticket will be entered into a drawing for one of three prizes! For 35 years, the raffle and pie auction has raised the money that helps pay for some of the school’s most cherished programs: Downhill and Cross Country Ski days, artist and author visits, concerts, art projects, after school program, Science Fair, field trips, 8th grade DC trip, graduation, Prom, classroom supplements at all grade levels, equipment and much more. Please help us to continue these great traditions… if every family sold just five packs of tickets, we would almost cover the cost of K-12 ski days with just that! As our school continues to grow, so do the funding demands from the PTO. Our mutual goal is to continue supporting our existing programs and be able to take on new, innovative opportunities for our students at all levels. Together, we can give Ophir and LPHS students opportunities that will last a lifetime. ___________________________________________________________

Big Sky School District #72 School Building Reserve Levy Ophir Elementary School Our new elementary school project is well underway and on schedule for delivery in time for the 2015-2016 school year next Fall. Immediately upon approval of the bond in May 2013, work began to analyze the new parcel of land and design the facility. During the design phase several unforeseen issues were revealed. Some of these include: • Poor soil conditions that required significant geotechnical remediation and structural upgrades; • Presence of radon gas that required mitigation; and • More expansive site construction required to address existing topography. In response to these challenges, the design and construction team, building committee and Board worked in detail to find mitigating solutions. Some of these include: • Re-evaluating building envelope, mechanical and electrical systems, reprogramming space requirements for the library, corridors, classrooms and custodial spaces; • Deferring four classrooms for possible future expansion; • Planning to salvage as much existing classroom furniture as possible for use in the new facility; and • Developing numerous bid alternates that ensured the project could proceed, but also enable the team to remain nimble in making informed decisions about where we could or could not spend the budget. Today we are asking for your continued support to deliver the best possible school we can. The project team have already mitigated several hundred thousand dollars of unexpected costs. However, we are still in need of $840,000 to complete the project as desired. The Big Sky community have made education a top priority, and we sincerely hope that you will continue to support this project as a legacy for students today and well into our future. Voting will be held by mail ballot until March 10th (Election Day).

Jad Abumrad, “Gut Churn”

Saturday, March 7th, 7:30 PM While working on staff at WNYC, Jad Abumrad began tinkering with an idea for a new kind of radio program. That idea evolved into one of public radio’s most popular shows today – Radiolab. Abumrad hosts the program with Robert Krulwich and also serves as one of its producers. The program won the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award and explores big questions in science, philosophy and mankind. Under Abumrad’s direction, the show uses a combination of deep-dive journalism, narrative storytelling, dialogue and music to craft compositions of exploration and discovery. Radiolab podcasts are downloaded over four million times each month and the program is carried on 437 stations across the nation. Abumrad was honored as a 2011 MacArthur Fellow (also known as the Genius Grant). The MacArthur Foundation website says: “Abumrad is inspiring boundless curiosity within a new generation of listeners and experimenting with sound to find ever more effective and entertain ways to explain and tell a story.”

The Los Angeles Times critic Marc Swed said of their earlier collaboration: “…the sound of two pianos can be practically symphonic, and the arrangements brilliantly demonstrate the grandeur of this music.” For decades, Buenos Aires-born, Latin GRAMMY®-winning pianist, composer and arranger Pablo Ziegler has been one of the most important figures in Argentine New Tango, the vibrant musical hybrid of classic tango and American jazz. Saturday, March 28th, 7:30 PM James Sewell Ballet was founded in New York City by James Sewell and Sally Rousse and brought to Minnesota in 1993. Combining their expertise, vision and chutzpah, they envisioned a close-knit company of dance artists willing to both challenge their physical limits and expand their notions about ballet. Nearly two decades later, critically acclaimed JSB performances move and delight audiences across the country. The embodiment of the original vision is a professional company of nine dancers performing innovative work that explores the technical boundaries of ballet. Quickly becoming Big Sky’s resident choreographer, James Sewell opened the debut season at WMPAC with a sellout performance, and will close the second season with original work that was created in Big Sky during the Twin Sky Dance Intensive.

The deadline for applying is April 30th. The criteria for the scholarship will be based on financial need, community service and academic performance. A school transcript and detailed description of community service is required. A committee of three Rotarians will review each application and a winner will be announced by May 31st. The scholarship will be awarded directly to the student upon receipt of a tuition bill. All information provided to the review committee will be kept strictly confidential to the members of that committee.

Coming from south Florida, I am a big fan of Hispanic food of all kinds. Down in the Melting Pot of Miami we get it all – Cuban, Mexican, Peruvian – you name it and there’s a delicious hole-in-the-wall spot where you can get it as authentic as it comes. Once again, being the spoiled foodie that I am, not just any Latin food pleases my palette. The problem with Montana? Not many choices. That is, until I discovered Black Kettle Burrito Co. I had pretty much lost hope until my boyfriend dragged me into the little food shack located at the top of the Swift Current lift. It was a bluebird day and I wasn't interested in taking the time out to eat, but he was insistent, so I gave in. Not expecting much, I ordered a tamale and he had a chicken burrito.

We sat out on the deck, which overlooks a huge chunk of the Rocky Range. If the view wasn't enough, the food was! The corn tamale stuffed with marinated, shredded pork and topped with sour cream, cheese, delicious salsa verde, rice and beans, tasted like I should have been sitting on a beach in Mexico somewhere. As for the burrito, it was huge! Stuffed with all of the toppings and complete with marinated shredded chicken, it definitely put our need for Hispanic food to rest.

Big Sky residents interested in applying for this scholarship should email to bigskyrotary@gmail.com for more information or contact a Big Sky Rotarian. The George Macdonald Scholarship is funded by the community’s generous support of the Rotary Club of Big Sky’s annual Gold Raffle and Auction held each January.
