The Montanan

The Montanan, the magazine of The University of Montana, is published three times a year and distributed to more than 80,000 households of alumni, friends, and supporters in the state, nation, and around the world. The magazine informs its readers about accomplishments and advances at the University, as well as inspires loyalty that will keep alumni and friends connected to UM their entire lives.

W

The Montanan provides interesting features and departments that are well-balanced and intriguing for younger and older readers alike. Read by a wide audience—including alumni, donors, legislators, faculty, administrators, and friends of the University—each edition of the Montanan brims with content. Every issue includes a campus feature, trend piece, and an alumni profile. In addition, the magazine also features campus news in “Around the Oval,” updates from our alums in “About Alumni,” and historic looks at campus in “Artifacts.”

why should i advertise in The Montanan ?

Circulation: Sent to more than 80,000 households (many with multiple alums in residence who read each issue), the Montanan has the largest circulation of any magazine produced in the state.

Education: Because Montanan readers are graduates of The University of Montana, our readers are all college-educated and most are in their prime income-earning years. Location: Montanan readers either currently reside, or at one time lived, in the state and have an inherent interest in Montana’s products and services. Value: Advertisers in the Montanan pay far less to reach more customers. Multiple-issue advertising rates are significantly lower than any other Montana-based magazine. Prominence: With compelling content and fetching design, the Montanan has received numerous awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Admissions Marketing Report. Presence: Each issue is published online at

proud to be a griz

A popular theme running through the pages of the Montanan is Montana pride—for the University, Griz Nation, and the Big Sky State. In our last readership survey, we found that most alums say the Montanan is their No. 1 source for receiving information about and staying connected to UM. If your aim as an advertiser is to reach a large college-educated, higher-income audience, you couldn’t ask for a better medium than the Montanan.

what our readers say:

Each issue of the Montanan lifts my spirits as I read through the pages, look at the ads, and see the changes in both the University and surrounding community. I will continue to read the issues, looking longingly at all of the mountains, snow, and fall colors ...

Barbara LaMont ’92 As a graduate of The University of Montana, I anticipate the release of every new issue. The Montanan is my way of staying in touch with the community, lifestyle, and spirit that I have loved my entire life. As I continue to find myself farther and farther from Montana, I only need to pick up the magazine to find myself back in the great state!

Tait Engebretsen ’07 We recently received the fall Montanan and think it was the best since I started to receive it after graduating. We get back to Missoula every year. Keep up the good work.

John Dunning ’50 Thanks for our Montanan. You are surely in the top percentage of excellence in college magazine publications.

Lt. Col. Sidney R. Howard, U.S.A.F., Ret. ’62

I want you to know I think the Montanan is just great. I read it from cover-to-cover as soon as I get it. Keep up the good work!
