SNAPSHOT

Washington state photographer KEN ARCHER operates a newspaper press as his day job, but his passion is shooting wildlife images. “If I could do that full time, I would,” he says. Archer travels to Montana several times each year in search of wildlife, like this red fox he photographed in the Gallatin National Forest. “My wife and I spotted it from the car and got out to take some shots. The fox was moving east, hunting, and I could see it was heading to a creek bed along a mountainside, about 300 yards away, that had some nice snowdrifts next to it.” Archer jogged along the road to get ahead of the fox, then sat down in 3 feet of new snow to wait. “He disappeared over a ridge and I was sure I’d lost him, but then after a few minutes he appeared out of nowhere and started coming right toward me. That’s when I got this shot.” ■
