COACH RAY JENKINS

FALL, 1963 MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY

MSU A

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR The definition of “epoch,” W ebster tells us, is a “period of time characterized by a distinctive development or a memorable series of events.” The Montana Grizzlies enter into an epoch-making venture this fall w ith their initial appearance in the recently inaugurated Big Sky A th letic Conference. For the first time since Montana was a member of the N orthwestern Conference (1902-1924), the Grizzlies will be competing w ith nearby schools in their own geographic area. I t’s also the first time that in tra state rivals Montana and Montana State have been league affiliates. Other Big Sky members are Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga University and Weber State College. All, except Weber, are fam iliar opponents. The name Big Sky itself lends drama and historical perspective to the organization. With M ontana’s centennial celebration coming in 1964, added emphasis is given. We admit our pride is showing. This sports brochure gives you background information about the 1963 Montana football team—and teams of the past. If you can’t use it, pass it on to a friend or relative who may have a bit of nostalgia in his heart for ol’ Montana. Speaking of the past, this brochure is dedicated to General Frank “Shrim p” Milburn, who died at Missoula during the 1962 football season. The General, a former MSU football coach and athletic director who found world fame in the Army, would have enjoyed all the activity the coming football seasons are bound to have at Missoula. Dwight Eisenhower said of Milburn: “For many years Shrimp was my good friend—a dedicated American and m ilitary leader whom I re spected. He is missed, I know, by his many friends.” “Big Man about M ontana” is the sign one sports w riter tacked on MSU football coach Ray Jenkins, whose picture is displayed on the front cover. Dedication and perseverance are Jenkins’ trade names. In the past five seasons, his Grizzly teams have fought adm irably on the gridiron. The 1962 club had a 5-5 record and beat every team in the now-formed Big Sky Conference. The Grizzlies may or may not do well in the league this fall. Actually, it doesn’t m atter, because Missoulians have already nominated Ray Jenkins “Big Sky Coach of the Year” for 1963. Sincerely, JACK GILLULY Sports 'News Editor Montana State University

MSU FIGHT SONGS AND YELLS UP WITH MONTANA

Up with Montana, hoys, down with the foe, Old Montana’s out for a victory, She’ll shoot her backs around the foeman's line, A hot time is coming up now, brother mine. Up with Montana, boys, down with the foe, Good ole Grizzly'll triumph today, And the squeal of the pig will float on the air, From the tummy of the Grizzly Bear. HAIL COPPER, SILVER, GOLD Hail copper, silver, gold, Borne by our warriors bold, It's the flag of the Grizzly Bear. See those bruins tearing, Their way down the field, We know they never will yield, Montana. On they go and trample down the foe, Let's go Montana, we love the fray, The Grizzly fight, fight, fight, Will bring victory, Let's go Montana, we'll win today. MONTANA, MY MONTANA Our chosen state, all hail to thee, Montana, my Montana, Thou hast thy portion with the free, Montana, my Montana, From shore to shore, from sea to sea, Oh, may thy name full honored be, Symbol of strength and loyalty, Montana, my Montana. God bless our state for what is done, Montana, my Montana, God bless our people, ev'ry one, Montana, my Montana, And as the years shall go and come May freedom's bright eternal sun, Find here full many a vict'ry won, Montana, my Montana. GO, GO, GO, MONTANA Go! Go! Go! Montana, Fight on to win the fray, Fight! Fight! Fight! Montana, Old Copper, Silver and Gold will win today. Win! Win! Win! Montana, Fight on relentlessly, Go! Go! Go! Montana, And bring us victory. Go! Grizzlies, Go! Rah! Rah! Fight, Grizzlies, Fight. Rah! Rah! Go! Fight! Grizzlies.
