1974 GRIZZLY OUTLOOK An experienced and speedy offensive lineup will provide the impetus as the University of M ontana attem pts to rebound from back-to-back losing seasons. However, to complement the offense's potential, a young and untried defensive unit must develop quickly. M ontana returns 13 starters a n d a total of 29 letterm en. Nine of the starters and 16 of the letterm en a re offensive personnel. Offense, more precisely the lack of it, has m eant trouble for the Grizzly grid squad in the last two seasons. However, a com bination of old and new has injected new life into the attack. Gene Carlson is new as coach of the backfield. Three junior college backs, Rich Jordan, W yatt McCraw and Steve Dionas are also new. Freshm en like quarterbacks Randy Christophel an d Tom Clift, fullback Ricky Lynn and halfback Mike Clark could help. The old includes the w ishbone formation, aban d o n ed last y e ar for a multiple set offense, and five letterm en backs, head ed by two experienced quarterbacks in Rock Svennungsen and Van Troxel. Jordan, 1,332 yards in eight gam es at G rays Harbor JC, Mc Craw and sophomore Del Spear are exceptional talents at half back. All three are 4.6 for the 40. Letterman Dave Ponzoha is a steady performer. Bob Smith, 1973's leading rusher despite m issing five gam es, will be pushed by Dionas for the fullback job. And, Troxel an d Svennungsen h ave been alternately in charge at quarterback the last two seasons. In the glory y e ars of 1969 and 1970 (10-0 regular seasons) M ontana fielded giant offensive lines. G uards W alt Brett (6-5, 235) an d Dan Sullivan (6-6, 225) renew the trend an d tackles Eric Manegold (6-3, 230) and R andy Lynn. (6-0, 240) aren't small. Redshirt Brett and Sullivan, a growing sophomore, b eat out returning starters Bill G rigsby an d Kim McReynolds in spring ball. At center,, transfer Jam es Summers (6-2, 210) or redshirt Jim Zellick (6-0, 215) will get the starting nod. R egulars D uane W alker (6-3, 210) and Steve Carlson return at end. Greg Erickson, a starting halfback in 1973, is expected to replace Carlson at split end. Carlson suffered a dislocated hip in spring ball. In addition to a host of newcom ers, the defense h a s a new alignm ent— the 5-2. The new alignm ent requiring three linem en and four linebacker-types is particularly suited to UM, w hich lost the starting front four, but returns plenty of linebackers. Lettermen Terry Flowers, Greg Harris, Gig Stuart a n d Larry Farnam form a nucleus in the dow n positions. They will be joined by fall transfers Mark Plum a n d Rhett Thomas an d freshm an Randy Redwine/ Middle guards Harris (6-3, 235) and Stuart (6-1, 225) a re very strong and trem endous hitters. Farnam (6-2, 235) and Flowers (5-11, 220) are tackles. So are Plum (6-2, 235) and Thomas (6-4, 230). If they, or Redwine (6-2, 220) can come through, the defense will be strong. Ron Rosenberg (6-3, 235) and G reg Salo (6-1, 220) a re the leading candidates at middle linebacker. John Prigmore (6-0, 230) and fall transfer Jim Cedarstrom (6-2, 230) are a s good. Letterman John Buxton (6-0, 205) a n d transfer Bill G ulbranson (6-1, 205) are the defensive ends. Cedarstrom can p lay here an d sophomore Rod Tweet (6-0, 195) m ade rem arkable progress in the spring. The secondary h a s num erous starting candidates. All-Big Sky com erback Sly H ardy is back. Transfer Greg Carter, letterm an Glenn Schm asow and converted split end Greg Anderson battled throughout the spring for the other cornerback slot an d the free safety position. Returning regular Mike Ladd received a surprising challenge from Bob Eustance, a w alk on, during the spring at strong safety. M ontana's kicking gam e will be handled by freshm an Bruce Carlson. He w a s 41 of 45 on PATs, kicked a 44-yard FG and av era g ed 40.6 punting a s a high school senior.

The Big Sky Conference The Big Sky Conference was formed in February, 1963, when the presidents and athletic directors of six Rocky Mountain universities met in Spokane. The original con ference members were Gonzaga, Idaho, Idaho State, Mon tana, Montana State and Weber. Gonzaga entered the conference as a non-football playing school. The conference derived its name from a pair of Mon tanans and a Washington sports editor. A. B. Guthrie, Great Falls, Montana, wrote a novel entitled “The Big Sky” and Jack Hallowell, former Montana State Adver tising director, promoted the Big Sky theme as a nickname for the state. Harry Missildine, Spokesm an-Review sports editor, picked up the name and in a sports column pro moted the name Big Sky as the name of the conference. On February 25, 1963, the conference adopted the name— Big Sky Athletic Conference. In 1970 the conference expanded to include Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Boise State Col lege, Boise, Idaho. Both entered as football playing schools. Jack Friel became the first commissioner in 1963, and the offices were established in Pullman, Wash., Friel’s home. Following Friel’s retirement last July, the offices were moved to Boise, Idaho, and John Roning was named commissioner.

The Commissioner John Roning was named Big Sky Commissioner to re place Jack Friel, who retired July 1, 1971. Friel was com missioner since the Big Sky Conference’s inception in 1963. Not only was there a change at the helm, but the league offices were moved to Boise and a conference sports in formation director, Dan Peters, appointed. Roning first entered the collegiate athletic picture at the University of Minnesota as an end for Bernie Bierman’s Golden Gophers from 1932-34. Bierman also coached at Montana from 1919-21. Roning coached in Minnesota high school leagues before a three-year stint at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn., before returning to Minnesota for gradu ate work. Following naval service during World War II, Roning joined the Utah State University football staff and served four years as head football coach and athletic di rector for the Aggies. He was twice named Skyline Con ference “Coach of the Year.” Roning then became head football coach at the U niversity of Denver and was the Pioneer headman for six years. He then moved to the U niversity of South Dakota in 1960.
