UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA GRIZZLY FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1995, 2001

SPRING PREVIEW - THE OFFENSE

Since the first week of February, the Montana football team has been waking up in the predawn hours and braving the winds in Washington-Grizzly Stadium for 6 a.m. winter conditioning sessions every Tuesday and Thursday while Missoula.

The Griz will soon get the chance to trade in the sweats shirts and cold mornings of winter condo for the pads, helmets and afternoon sunshine of spring ball, set to kick off on March 13 and concluding with the annual spring game on April 22 in Butte. Montana had of the nation’s most productive attacks in 2016, averaging over 482 yards of offense per game, largely driven by the fifth-best passing game in the country that accounted for 327 yards per game and 34 touchdowns over 11 games. Despite posting eye-popping offensive numbers, Montana’s 2016 season didn’t meet the expectations of the staff, players and fans alike. With spring ball right around the corner, the Griz are as anxious as ever to restart the engine of Montana football and dive into the details that are required to bring championship football back to Missoula. “This spring is going to be huge for our program to really get focused on every single rep, to try

and seek perfection in everything we do, and for the coaches to hold the kids accountable,” said head coach Bob Stitt, who enters his third year at the helm with a 14-10 overall record. “Just understanding how to practice perfection this spring will carry over into the fall. We play pretty good football for about 98 percent of the snaps, but there will be two, three, four snaps where we don’t do a good job, and it hurt us,” added Stitt. “We’ve got to keep doing the things we believe in, and that’s going to pay off.”

Montana returns 19 players who made three or more starts, and a robust 41 lettermen from last year’s 6-5 squad, who produced the 30th winning season in the past 31 years of Griz football. Stitt and his staff also added four high-level transfers in the offseason, giving UM plenty of in-game experience to build on for 2017. Of those 19 returning starters, eight are back on the offensive side of the ball. One of the areas where UM will benefit the most from returning starting experience is the offensive line, providing key protection for UM’s passing attack. “It all starts up front,” said Stitt. “Offensive linewise, we’ve got guys back with a lot of starting experience and some young guys we’re excited about too.” O-line coach Chad Germer returns three players who started in nearly every game last season in seniors David Reese and Cooper Sprunk alongside sophomore Angel Villanueva, who started all 11 games for UM at left guard as a freshman. With 35 consecutive starts to his name, Reese is the most experienced player on the field for the Griz at left tackle. Adding more senior leadership to the offensive line this year is journeyman Mike Ralston, who has transitioned from wide receiver to the O-line in the offseason, having also played tight end and defensive end during his career. On paper, it may seem like an unusual move, but for those who have seen Ralston in recent weeks, it’s a no-brainer. “We’re hoping he’s a guy that can transition into that right tackle position with ease. Physically he looks the part, and we can’t wait to see what he can do this spring,” said Stitt. “He’s bought into it, he’s excited about it, and he’s committed to getting as strong as possible and putting on the weight. He’s up over 300 pounds now, and he’s a big, athletic guy.” Also expected to compete for starting spots are

2017 MONTANA FOOTBALL

sophomore Dallas Hart and redshirt freshman Thayne Jackson, who put on 50 pounds before arriving on campus last year, bulking up to a rock-solid 312 pounds. He leads a group of five offensive linemen that were part of the incoming class of 2016 expected to compete for time. “We expect a lot out of Thayne, and Dallas is a guy who we’re excited about too,” said Stitt. “Dylan Eickmeyer is another guy we like. Every time he came across with the upperclassmen last year he was getting a good push. It’s going to be fun this spring to see them run the backup group.” The Griz will also get back six of last year’s top-10 wide receivers – one of the key ingredients in UM’s spread attack. These six returning receivers caught a combined total of 211 passes for 2,475 yards, nearly 70 percent of UM’s passing total. As Montana fans learned last year, the corps of receivers can break a game wide open with explosive young talent, but in this year’s group will need to grow up fast. “We’ve got a lot of very talented guys that got quality reps last year, but we’re still young,” said Stitt. The veteran leadership within the receivers is packed into the “H” backs, the hybrid tight end/ receiver position that is filled by seniors Josh Horner and former quarterback Makena Simis, with sophomore Colin Bingham providing plenty of additional depth. Horner will be Montana’s most battle-tested receiver with 11 career starts and 31 total appearances. The rangy 6-foot-5 Great Falls native caught 22 passes for 241 yards in eight games last season before being sidelined with an injury. Bingham stepped up in his first year and saw playing time in every game, catching three touchdowns and totaling 282 yards. “Horner and Bingham are big time players, and they’ve proven that on the field,” said Stitt, who is also excited by the progress Simis has made since changing positions last season. “Man, Simis looks like a million bucks. He’s probably 230 pounds now, very lean and he’s a tough guy, very athletic. We really feel like we’ve got three guys who can get it done.” No one scored more touchdowns in 2016 for the Griz than junior outside receiver Keenan

SPRING PREVIEW - THE OFFENSE

Stitt, who is also excited by the progress Simis has made since changing positions last season.

“Man, Simis looks like a million bucks. He’s probably 230 pounds now, very lean and he’s a tough guy, very athletic. We really feel like we’ve got three guys who can get it done.” No one scored more touchdowns in 2016 for the Griz than junior outside receiver Keenan Curran did, taking it to the house a team-high 10 times. Curran also tied the single-game record with four TD grabs in a game against Idaho State. Sophomore Justin Calhoun is also back after a breakout freshman campaign where he racked up the second-most receiving yards on the team with 42 catches for 625 yards. The in-game experience in the group drops off significantly from there, though, but expectations to perform like upperclassmen remains high. “Justin (Calhoun) had a great year, and we’ve got two really strong guys in Kobey Eaton and Lamarriel Taylor that we’ve got to be able to count on, but we’re very young.” said Stitt. The Griz will also have a group of redshirt freshmen unveiled to fans for the first time this spring who bring length and speed to the position including highly touted recruits Samuel Akem, Brennan Corbin, Jed Nagler, and Samori Toure. “They are all really, really quality receivers, now we have to see how they handle moving into executing our offense and making plays when it matters,” added Stitt. Stitt says Toure is “athletic enough he can put his foot in the ground and make somebody miss,” and could see reps at the “Z” inside receiver position, alongside Jerry Louie-McGee. “We’ve got to try guys at different positions, and that’s what spring is all about to see who else can play at that spot,” Stitt added. What every fan knows about the “Z” position is that Louie-McGee was really, really good at it in his freshman season.

“We expect Jerry to do even greater things this year. He’s a dynamic player, and we just have to get him the ball, and he’s going to do some incredible things,” said Stitt. “With Caleb (Lyons) behind him, you’ve got a solid backup, and Mitch McLaughlin is more than capable too.” Even though Montana employs a pass-heavy attack under Stitt, the Grizzlies have greatly benefited from graduated senior running back John Nguyen over the years.

Nguyen finished his career as the No. 6 all-time rusher in UM history with 2,066 yards. He also set a new school record for longest touchdown run in program history, breaking loose for an 81-yard score against Sacramento State as a senior. Never the less, Montana brings plenty of experience back to the position this spring as Stitt looks to add depth. The Grizzlies’ second-leading scorer from 2016, junior Jeremy Calhoun, will be inactive during spring ball rehabbing injury, but the Montana staff (and fans) are well aware of his capabilities.

Montana enters spring drills with three quarterbacks all vying for the starting job in senior Reese Phillips, junior transfer Caleb Hill and redshirt freshman Gresch Jensen. “It’s an open battle,” said Stitt, who focuses much of his time with the QBs during practice. “We’ve got to come out of spring with a quarterback that can run our offense, take care of the football, but also be very aggressive and take chances and make plays when we need them.” Waiting in the wings under Gustafson and Chad Chalich last year was Phillips, a transfer from the SEC’s Kentucky Wildcats who has a leg up on the position in spring with a season of operating Stitt’s offense under his belt, appearing in four games in 2016.

Since being forced into action as a true freshman, Calhoun has been one of UM’s most dominant ball-carriers with 846 yards and 18 touchdowns to his name in 20 games. Calhoun rushed for nine TDs in 2016 and caught a pass for another to match Curran’s team-leading output of 10 scores on the season. Redshirt senior Treshawn Favors will get his opportunity to move into a starting role for the Griz after three seasons of productive, but injury prone seasons with 17 appearances under his belt. “Tre is a very good player that hasn’t gotten a ton of reps, but we need to find out who the next guy is this spring,” said Stitt. “You need two running backs in our offense. We run too many offensive plays for one guy to do it.”

The sophomore from Coeur d’Alene juked his way into the hearts of Griz nation as UM’s leading receiver last season, breaking a pair of school records and being voted the seventh-best freshman in the country by STATS, all this despite missing three games to injury.

While Favors and Calhoun are expected to lead the group, redshirt senior Shane Moody will see reps on the offensive side of the ball this spring, coming over from the cornerback spot. Sophomore Cody McCombs out of Billings West and redshirt freshman Rey Green will also see plenty of time carrying the ball as well.

Stitt sees no reason “Mr. Electricity” would take his foot off the pedal this spring.

But perhaps the most intriguing storyline of spring ball 2017 is at the quarterback position.

2017 MONTANA FOOTBALL

Gone is two-year starting quarterback Brady Gustafson, who passed his way into the Montana record books, breaking Dave Dickenson’s record for most completed throws in a game with 47, and concluded his career at No. 11 on UM’s career passing leader list with 4,809 yards.

SPRING PREVIEW - THE OFFENSE Continued... But Caleb Hill, who transferred to Montana ahead of the spring semester from football factory Blinn College in Texas, will make the position battle an interesting one. The southpaw QB operated a similar spread offense to Stitt’s at Blinn, and at 6-foot-4 strikes an imposing figure in the shotgun formation, while showing mobility as well. Gresch Jensen, one of Stitt’s top recruits from the incoming class of 2016, will also enter the competition in his first year of eligibility after redshirting last season. “That competition should be very strong, and I hope all three of them push each other and we come out with a guy that can win a lot of games for us,” added Stitt. But for all the facts, figures, stats and analysis that go into finding a starting QB, Stitt and his staff will spend much of spring ball trying measure the unmeasurables that go into making a great quarterback. “The starting quarterback should elevate everyone’s play,” said Stitt. “Coach (Andrew) Selle has some things he does statistically where you can weigh out their production, but you try to get a get a feel for how the other guys rally around a certain quarterback, how our offense runs and how efficiently it’s run when this quarterback is in there. Do guys make plays when this certain quarterback is in there or are they not making plays?” *******************************************************

SPRING PREVIEW - THE DEFENSE

Heading into the 2016 season, Montana defensive coordinator Jason Semore faced the task of replacing three senior linebackers and STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year Tyrone Holmes, now plying his trade in the NFL. The result was a reloaded defensive unit long on talent, but short on experience that still finished 2016 as the Big Sky’s No. 1 overall defense, holding opponents to just 349 yards per game, and ranked ninth nationally in tackles for loss with an average of 8.1 per game. Montana’s 2016 defense also set a school record for fewest rushing yards allowed in a single game, holding Mississippi Valley State to -61 total yards in UM’s 66-7 win. Though exceedingly productive, the defensive squad’s youthfulness fell victim to big play strikes in Montana’s 6-5 season. But after being thrown into the deep end and forced to swim, Montana’s young defense returns to the field in 2017 as a group, for the most part, built of now seasoned veterans.

Family Special Team’s Player of the Year Dante Olson, Vika Fa’atuiese and Cy Sirmon, who each ranked among UM’s top 15 tacklers. “It’ll be good to see what Dante, Vika, and Cy can do this spring,” added Semore. “Dante is too good of a player not to play. He’s one of the freakiest athletes on our team. We’ve got to find a way to get him on the field.” While replacing the likes of Caleb Kidder and Ryan Johnson is no task any defensive coach would want, Montana’s biggest strength in 2017 could be up front. “I like our D-line,” said Semore plainly. “I’ll put them against any d-line in the country this year.” Defensive end Tucker Schye returns to anchor the front four after being bestowed Montana’s legacy 37 jersey, an honor that recognizes obvious talent as UM’s eighth-leading returning tackler, despite backing up Kidder and Johnson last year. The 37 jersey is also an honor that brings high expectations too.

Semore welcomes a solid nine returning starters and 12 players who saw action in more than five games last season back to his 2017 outfit. Included in those nine starters are all three linebackers, four defensive backs, plus an abundance of experience on a defensive line bolstered by high-level transfers in the offseason. But with the likes of Josh Buss (last season’s top tackler and defensive MVP), Connor Strahm and James Banks sitting out the spring recovering from injury, the second year Defensive Coordinator will have the opportunity to build depth across the group and develop the playbook as well. “We’re going to experiment with some things this spring and see what some of our young guys can do. We know guys like Josh Buss can play, so we want to limit their contact,” said Semore. “We’ll try some new things, but the base defense as a core, we’ll do a lot of the same things. You want all your guys coming back in the same scheme, learning all the lessons they did last year so they can grow as a defense. “That’s what makes spring ball so fun for coaches is that you get to put guys in situations and see what they’re good at, what they’re not good at, and build the playbook from there.” As such, set to move into a more central role at linebacker this spring is last season’s Hauck

SPRING PREVIEW - THE DEFENSE

Continued....

“He’s always been really productive, and when he plays in games, he’s really, really, productive. But it’s different when you’re coming off the bench to spell Caleb, you know? Now you’re the guy, and you have to play 70 snaps, but I think he’ll succeed because he has a great work ethic and a great attitude,” said Semore. The defensive interior received a big boost in the offseason in the form of Maryland transfer David Shaw, who checks in at a solid 310 pounds, bringing Big 10 experience with him. Nose tackle Brandt Davidson returns this spring as UM’s fifth-leading tackler, while junior Reggie Tilleman prepares to move into a more active role on the D-line as well. “Their impact will be huge. I feel good about four of our D-tackles right now, our noses and our tackles – and I don’t know how many other FCS coaches can say that,” said Semore. “Brandt was one of the better tackles in the league last year, so to have him and Shaw competing for that starting position, with Reggie in there too, will be huge for us.” Also returning to the defensive interior is sophomore Jesse Sims, who picked up six starts as a redshirt freshman and played in all 11 games after moving inside from defensive end. Semore says Sims has now found a home as a tackle, a position that suits his natural abilities and aggressive nature. “Defensive ends have to diagnose what block they’re getting and react. Well, defensive tackles - you just go whoop somebody’s ass, and that matches Jesse’s mentality and his style of play,” said Semore. The one area where Montana is both deep and young is in the defensive backs. Markell Sanders and Ryan McKinley return a combined 49 tackles and 17 starts from last season on the corners, and former Oregon State safety Justin Strong returns as UM’s third leading tackler, known for his devastating hits. But Semore will use spring ball to address depth concerns behind those three. “We’re going to be young in that room with the exception of Markell and Ryan. Those guys have a ton of game experience as starters, but this young group of corners is going to be really, really good. Josh Egbo is going to be something special,” added Semore. Adding more depth to the cornerbacks is red-

shirt freshman Dareon Nash, who was recruited by Stitt as a wide receiver, but was also a defensive standout. “His high school corner tape is almost better than his receiver tape. We’re excited to have him,” said Semore of Nash. “He can go. He has long arms, good feet, so we’ll see how he develops. Technique-wise, he’s going to be behind the curve because it’s a very technical position. We’ll see how he progresses through spring, but athletic ability wise, he’s what you’re looking for at corner.” Making the permanent switch to strong safety is sophomore Josh Sandry from Bigfork, who picked up three starts his freshman season at free safety, finishing as the team’s ninth-leading tackler with 30 takedowns. “Physically, he could have started every game last year,” said Semore. “This spring is going to be big for Josh because the safeties do so much communication in terms of coverage and support. Physically, he could have started more games, but mentally he’s got to learn the position.” After two practices this spring in shells, the Griz now take a week off for spring break before returning on March 27 in full pads.

SPECIAL TEAMS / QBs By most accounts, the 2016 Montana Grizzlies were a young team, but in no group were they younger than on the special teams. It’s not often in the world of Division-I football that a pair of redshirt freshman kickers and a sophomore punter are given the task of performing under the watchful eye of 26,000 fans in the highest-pressure situations FCS football has to offer, but that’s what Montana specialists Tim Semenza, Brandon Purdy and Eric Williams did. The Grizzlies’ young kickers were forced to come of age quickly in 2016, and despite the group’s youthfulness, Montana’s was the thirdmost accurate field goal unit in the Big Sky, connecting on an average of nearly 79 percent of UM’s 19 attempts.

SPECIAL TEAMS / QBs

Despite suffering a cold spell late in the season, Semenza finished the season as the league’s seventh-leading scorer amongst players in any position, slotting 13 field goals and 33 PATs for a personal haul of 72 points. Purdy, who saw action in five games, put up solid numbers of his own as well, going 2-3 on field goals and 12-13 on PATs.

Solid marks for a kicker whose last competitive kick was on the high school fields of San Diego before being thrown into the fire at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. But even with high percentages, the Grizzlies still struggled at times - especially in PATs, where the Griz missed 10 of 55 attempts in 2016. Now with a season of the best learning experience possible under its belt, the Grizzly corps of specialists enters spring drills looking to increase those percentages. With two kickers who have proven they have the tools to do the job, UM’s spring season will be used to see who is going to get it done on a constant basis. “Obviously, we had some good stuff, and some bad stuff happen to us last year on special teams. Now we have to be a lot more consistent this year with the good stuff,” said second-year Montana special teams coordinator Travis Niekamp. “We are light years ahead right now compared to where we were last year at this time. Not just experience alone, but also from a developmental standpoint. Guys actually kicking in live games in front of 26,000 people, pressure situations, all the different stuff you can think of - we’ve got three guys that have been there and done that.” One veteran specialist who is absent from this season’s roster is long snapper Aaron Held, who is set to graduate this spring and move on to grad school, before eventually entering med school. Over the past four seasons, Held was one of Montana’s most trusted performers, starting 49 consecutive games at a position that goes largely unnoticed. “The thing with specialists is you don’t realize how important they are until they leave. Aaron did a heck of a job for us for four years, did a phenomenal job last year – we didn’t have one bad snap from him – so now we have big shoes to fill,” said Niekamp. Attempting to fill those shoes will be junior Gage Smith, who also suits up at linebacker for the Griz, seeing action in three games last year and

against in both JC and high school. I mean, the defense on my team at Blinn had eight players go to the Pac-12, SEC or Big 10,” said Hill.

He says those experiences combined have made him confident he will be able to apply it toward creating success on the field this year at UM.

“So, I’m just looking forward to going out and playing. The good thing is I’m familiar with this offense. It’s almost the exact same thing we ran at Blinn.” While Hill, who will be a junior in the fall, is confident in his ability, he knows a starting job won’t be easy to earn.

*******************************************************

“When I came back from Christmas break, I just had a different feeling, being a senior. My teammates and coaches have allowed me to step into that leadership role, and I’ve taken it and run with it,” said Phillips.

While Montana’s long snappers joust for a starting spot, this spring, most eyes around Washington-Grizzly Stadium will be focused on Montana’s trio of quarterbacks as the Griz look to fill the position vacated by NFL prospect Brady Gustafson.

“I’m comfortable because I’m in the position I’ve always wanted to be in, and it’s a lot of fun. It’s a lot of fun to kind of be ‘the guy.’ That hasn’t been announced, but that’s just how I feel. I’m excited, not really nervous, just excited to get the keys and run with it.”

Head coach and offensive coordinator Bob Stitt has made it clear each QB (senior Reese Phillips, junior Caleb Hill, and freshman Gresch Jensen) will be in the mix for a starting position in the fall, pending their form during spring ball.

Caleb Hill enters his first spring at UM after transferring from Blinn College in Texas where he was a two-year starter at quarterback.

posting one tackle. Two other Grizzlies will get a shot at a starting snapper position as well, with Caleb Mitchell and Matthew O’Donoghue each coming off a redshirt season, “There’ll be a lot of competition through spring and maybe into fall camp to see who rises to the top. I feel good about who we have, it’s just a matter of getting them ready to play,” Niekamp added.

But ever the pragmatist, Stitt is fully aware that only one quarterback on the roster has taken a snap in maroon and silver on game day. “It’s an open battle,” Stitt said last month. “Reese will start out as the number one guy. Then you add guys like Caleb and Gresch who will really increase the competition and could see time. “We’ve got to come out of spring with a quarterback that can run our offense, take care of the football, but also be very aggressive, take chances and make plays when we need them.” The quarterbacks themselves are well aware of the opportunity spring ball holds for them, and each has prepared in his own way to embrace the role of Montana’s starting QB. Phillips, who transferred to Montana from the SEC’s University of Kentucky, is in the diver’s seat to start, having played four games last season, completing eight passes for 50 yards in cleanup time. The former Wildcat had offers out of high school to play for notable programs like Mississippi State (where 2016 NFL Rookie of the Year Dak Prescott was just starting to make a name for himself), Vanderbilt, and Memphis. Since arriving in Missoula, Phillips has gone to work developing relationships with his team-

2017 MONTANA FOOTBALL

He’s now hoping to work his way into a starting position as a Griz after falling in love with the environment at Washington-Grizzly Stadium during an official visit last season. “Everybody knows - or they should know - that Texas football is just a level above everything else. There’s something about it. I mean, I played in a state championship with 40 thousand people in Dallas Cowboys Stadium - for a high school game!” said Hill. “Coming up here and seeing the fans, and the atmosphere from the Griz walk, team meetings, and the tailgate, it had a good Texas feel to it. These people are Griz nation, they bleed maroon, and this is their team. “I had a good feeling just knowing that, hey, I’m going somewhere they love football, and they have pride in their program.” Hill, who had only seen snow once in his life before coming to Montana in January, was also highly touted out of high school, getting looks from programs like Texas, Houston and Iowa State, but deciding on the junior college route when none pulled the trigger. After one injury-shortened, but two overly successful years at a strong JC program at Blinn (which also produced NFL quarterback Cam Newton), he feels like he can make an impact in a short time for the Griz.

“We’re, all three, very good quarterbacks, so it’s going to come down to doing the small things right on and off the field. All I can do is just go out and make sure I do my job right and encourage and push my teammates when I’m in there taking the snaps, and whatever happens, happens,” Hill added. Jensen enters the competition for starting quarterback as a redshirt freshman, coming off a season leading the Griz scout team during practice. Even though he hasn’t seen any time suited up on the field yet at the collegiate level, he’s no stranger to life as a student-athlete at Montana. You might say being a Griz is a family tradition for Jensen. His mom and dad met at UM while his mother threw the discus for the Griz, and his Grandparents (who currently live in Helena) went to school at UM as well. “I’ve been watching the Griz since I was little. My family is all huge fans,” said Jensen, who came to UM from Auburn, Wash. “I’d always come through Missoula when I was young, stop in at practices and sit out there and watch for hours. I mean, our family email, like, starts with “Go Griz” or something like that!” With that rich family history behind his fledgling career at UM, Jensen is also confident ins his ability to earn a starting job, while understanding what he needs to do to make it a reality. “My expectation is to come in every day and just get better. Whether its film, lifting or throwing, just try to get better each day at each practice. Then, let things fall where they may, and just get better every day.” Montana will conclude spring drills with the annual spring game, this year held at historic Naranche Stadium in Butte on April 22.

“I know what kind of competition I played
