Entering the world of a gun show may seem like making a trip to a foreign land. But for many Montanans, guns are a way of life, a tool necessary for the rural lifestyle. This documentary explores the many ways Montanans use guns and their relationships with firearms. In the program, see how ranchers need guns to manage their livestock and meet women in rural Montana who carry weapons to protect themselves and their families when law enforcement may be an hour or more away. Visit a hunter’s education class where twelve-year-olds are practicing gun safety before heading out with their parents and grandparents to harvest animals for food. But there’s a dark side to the gun culture as well. Guns are used to commit crimes and to do violence against other people. You’ll meet the survivors of a 1986 Montana school shooting and go behind prison walls to hear from the boy, now a man, who did the shooting. Opinions about gun control range from support of an outright ban on firearms to opposition of any regulation at all.

Airs 8pm Friday, June 7 Paul Simon’s Graceland album, an experiment in cross-cultural collaboration, was also commercially popular, selling 14 million albums worldwide and winning Grammys for “Album of the Year” and “Song of the Year” for the title track. Today, it’s considered one of the most significant recordings of its time. But why was Graceland so controversial in 1986? Why did Simon face such vehement criticism? In 2011, filmmaker Joe Berlinger accompanied Simon on his return to South Africa to reunite and perform with several of the musicians involved in the original album, capturing Simon’s unique homecoming as he reflects on the landmark events.

John D. Rockefeller Airs 7pm Tuesday, June 18 Also airs 6/20 1am, 4am and 6/24 4am For decades, the Rockefeller name was despised in America — associated with John D. Rockefeller Sr.’s feared monopoly, Standard Oil. The world’s first billionaire, Rockefeller held 90 percent of the world’s oil refineries, 90 percent of the marketing of oil and a third of all the oil wells. Working methodically and secretly, he transformed an industry — and changed forever the way America did business. Though Rockefeller’s only son dedicated his life to redeeming the family reputation and Rockefeller had given away half his fortune by the end of his life, his philanthropy couldn’t erase the memory of his predatory business practices.

For Annie’s return to Broadway, this documentary offers a memorable behind-the-scenes look at every step of a single Annie production number, from the earliest phases of discussion among the creative team, rehearsals with actors, to opening night on Broadway.

Super Why! The week of June 10-14, Super Why! features a “Super Secret Message Week” with five episodes featuring five vocabulary words that can help kids put together the Super Secret Message. With a breakthrough interactive approach to reading education, classic fairytales with an innovative preschool twist and colorful and empowering young heroes, Super Why! is the only preschool property created to help kids learn the fundamentals of reading through interactive storybook adventures. The standout, imagination-stimulating series focuses on the adventures of four fairytale friends who transform into reading-powered superheroes: Alpha Pig with Alphabet Power, Wonder Red with Word Power, Princess Presto with Spelling Power, Super Why with the Power to Read and Super YOU with the Power to Help. Together, they are the “Super Readers”! In every fantastical episode of Super Why!, young viewers dive directly into a pop-up story to experience a brightly-illustrated children’s tale brought to magical life.

Also in june This summer, PBS KIDS will once again address the “summer slide” with a summer-long promotion that helps kids build and retain literacy skills. Beginning in June, 10 weeks of on-air content will broadcase as part of the 2013 Summer Literacy Project.

Battle for the Elephants Courtesy of J.J. Kelley

Airs 9pm Wednesday, June 12 Also airs 6/14 2am The elephant, Earth’s most charismatic and majestic land animal, today faces market forces driving the value of its tusks to levels once reserved for gold. This groundbreaking National Geographic special goes undercover to expose the criminal network behind ivory’s supply and demand. It also demonstrates how the elephant, with its highly evolved society, keen intelligence, ability to communicate across vast distances and to love, remember and even to mourn, is far more complex than ever imagined. More revelations are sure to follow, but only if the outspoken and courageous crime investigators and conservationists showcased in this program prevail.
