AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
The Big Burn 8pm Tuesday, September 9 Also airs 9/11 2am, 5am
Courtesy of United States Forest Service
In the summer of 1910, an unimaginable wildfire devoured more than three million acres across the Northern Rockies, confronting the fledgling U.S. Forest Service with a catastrophe that would define the agency and the nation’s fire policy for the rest of the 20th century and beyond. This program provides a cautionary tale of heroism and sacrifice, arrogance and greed, hubris and, ultimately, humility in the face of nature’s frightening power. Inspired by the best-selling book by Timothy Egan.

The Roosevelts: An Intimate History Ken Burns’ seven-part documentary weaves the stories of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt—three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics.
Get Action, 1858–1901 Airs Sunday, 9/14 7pm and 9pm A frail, asthmatic young Theodore Roosevelt transforms himself into a vigorous champion of the strenuous life, loses one great love and finds another, leads men into battle and then rises like a rocket to become the youngest president in American history at 42. Meanwhile, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was brought up as the pampered only child of adoring parents. Also airs 9/16 1am, 4am
In the Arena, 1901–1910 Airs Monday, 9/15 7pm, 9pm Murder brings Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency, but in the seven years that follow, he transforms the office and makes himself perhaps the best-loved of all the men who ever lived in the White House—battling corporate greed and building the Panama Canal, preserving American wilderness, carrying the message of American might around the world. FDR courts and weds Eleanor Roosevelt, the shy orphaned daughter of Theodore’s alcoholic brother, Elliott. Together, they begin a family. Also airs 9/17 1am, 4am
The Fire of Life, 1910–1919 Airs Tuesday, 9/16 7pm and 9pm Theodore Roosevelt leads a Progressive crusade that splits his own party, undertakes a deadly expedition into the South American jungle, campaigns for American entry into World War I—and pays a terrible personal price. Franklin masters wartime Washington as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, while Eleanor finds personal salvation in war work. Her discovery of Franklin’s romance with another woman transforms their marriage into a largely political partnership. Also airs 9/18 1am, 4am
Theodore Roosevelt, 1903
September 2014
The Storm, 1920–1933 Airs Wednesday, 9/17 7pm and 9pm Franklin Roosevelt runs for vice president in 1920 and seems assured of a still brighter future until polio devastates him the following summer. He spends seven years struggling without success to walk again, while Eleanor builds a personal and political life of her own. FDR returns to politics in 1928 and, as governor of New York, acts with such vigor and imagination during the first years of the Great Depression that the Democrats turn to him as their presidential nominee in 1932. He survives an attempted assassination as president-elect and at his inauguration tells his frightened countrymen the only thing they have to fear is “fear itself.” Also airs 9/19 1am, 4am
The Rising Road, 1933–1939 Airs Thursday, 9/18 7pm and 9pm FDR brings the same optimism and energy to the White House that his cousin Theodore displayed. Aimed at ending the Depression, his sweeping New Deal restores the people’s self-confidence and transforms the relationship between them and their government. Eleanor rejects the traditional role of first lady, becomes her husband’s liberal conscience and a sometimes controversial political force in her own right. As the decade ends, FDR faces two grave questions: whether to run for an unprecedented third term and how to deal with the rise of Hitler. Also airs 9/20 1am, 4am
Common Cause, 1939–1944 Airs Friday, 9/19 7pm and 9pm KEN BURNS SEVEN-PART DOCUMENTARY

Top: Eleanor Roosevelt speaking at the Chicago World’s Fair, 1933. Middle: Roosevelt family in Washington, D.C, 1919. Bottom: Theodore Roosevelt waves to the crowd.
FDR shatters the third-term tradition, struggles to prepare a reluctant country to enter World War II and, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, helps set the course toward Allied victory. Meanwhile, Eleanor struggles to keep New Deal reforms alive in wartime and travels the Pacific to comfort wounded servicemen. Diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 1943 and with the war still raging, FDR resolves to conceal his condition and run for a fourth term. Also airs 9/21 1am, 4am
Strong & Active Faith, 1944–1962 Airs Saturday, 9/20 7pm and 9pm Frail and failing but determined to see the war through to victory, FDR wins re-election and begins planning for a peaceful postwar world, but a cerebral hemorrhage kills him at 63. After her husband’s death, Eleanor Roosevelt proves herself a shrewd politician and a skilled negotiator in her own right, as well as a champion of civil rights, civil liberties and the United Nations. When she dies in 1962, she is mourned everywhere as the First Lady of the World. Also airs 9/22 1am, 4am

History of Yellowstone: Dudes and Sagebrushers Airs 7pm Wednesday, September 3
Also airs 9/5 3:30am Yellowstone became American’s first national park in 1872, but it was still in a very remote and uncivilized part of the country. For those early visitors, it was a primitive camping experience and a challenge to get there. Some of the early lodges were not much more than a roof over your heads and the rooms were air-conditioned by the wind whistling through the walls. With time, accommodations improved. The third hotel built at Canyon was a mile in circumference, and Lake Hotel is now the oldest lodge in America’s national parks. Old Faithful Inn started a completely new type of architecture in our National Parks, and the Fountain Hotel was abandoned once automobiles arrived. In this program, learn about the hidden workmanship of the Old Faithful Inn, visit the sites of Yellowstone’s forgotten lodges, and see rare old vintage footage of early automobiles. See the scenery of Yellowstone National Park as your grandfather did, from the seat of a restored antique Yellowstone bus. Join Senior Development Director Crystal Leach and Yellowstone National Park Historian, Lee Whittlesey, as they take you on a historic journey through Yellowstone. Acclaimed actor, musician and author John Lithgow will host this program from Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore. The valiant defense of Fort McHenry on the night of September 13, 1814, during the Battle of Baltimore inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” His message 200 years ago and the poem he set to music quickly spread and became the rallying cry for the new nation. Today, “The Star Spangled Banner” plays a central part in our everyday lives, but it wasn’t until 1931 that Congress declared it our national anthem. On the occasion of the anthem’s 200th birthday, Great Performance and Maryland Public Television present an entertainment event on the beautiful Baltimore Harbor front to commemorate the anthem’s creation and the courageous battle that inspired it.

Courtney B. Vance (pictured), with Stephen King and Gloria Reuben, is featured in the episode “In Search of Our Fathers,” airing September 23. As one of three guests who know almost nothing about their fathers’ histories, Courtney B. Vance wants to learn more about his true roots after the tragic suicide of his father, a foster child who never knew the identity of his biological parents. The mystery of his paternal ancestry is solved and he is introduced to a relative he never knew he had.
Finding Your Roots Airs 7pm Tuesdays beginning September 23 In this second, 10-part season of Finding Your Roots, Professor Gates, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, continues his journey into the past to illuminate the familial histories of 30 of today’s most recognizable names in sports, music, film, television, theatre and literature. By weaving a group of celebrity stories together, each episode takes viewers on a journey through layers of ancestral history, uncovering familial secrets and sharing life-altering discoveries that ultimately reveal an intimate bond that links each individual’s story together. New advancements in DNA testing since the first season allow Gates and his team to use genetic genealogy to make unprecedented discoveries about the past in season two, including being able to identify tribal Native American ancestry, solve paternity mysteries and pinpoint the geographic origins of hidden ancestry.

Women in Comedy Airs 8pm Tuesday, September 30 Track the rise of women in the world of comedy, from the “dangerous” comedy of ’70s sitcoms like “Maude” to the groundbreaking women of the 1980s American comedy club boom to today’s multifaceted landscape. Today, movies like Bridesmaids break box office records and the women of “Saturday Night Live” are often more famous than their male counterparts. Contemporary comics, including Chelsea Handler, Mo’Nique, Sarah Silverman, Lily Tomlin, Carol Burnett, Ellen DeGeneres, Jane Lynch and Kathy Griffin, talk about where women started in this competitive, male-dominated profession and where they are determined to go.

Live from Lincoln Center: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in Concert
Airs 8pm Friday, September 26 • The New York Philharmonic’s acclaimed production of Stephen Sondheim’s iconic musical thriller, staged in March 2014 to a sold-out crowd at Avery Fisher Hall, tells the story of the eponymous barber who, with his romantically inclined landlady, Mrs. Lovett the piemaker, seeks vengeance on what he considers a merciless world. The remarkable cast features bass-baritone Bryn Terfel in the title role and Academy Award-winning actress Emma Thompson as Mrs. Lovett, with Christian Borle and more. Audra McDonald serves as host.

New Half-Hour Sesame Street Airs 2:30pm Monday–Friday and 9am Saturdays Furthering a commitment to using the power of media to educate and entertain America’s children, PBS Kids and Sesame Street will introduce a bonus half-hour program this fall on-air and on digital platforms. For the first time, selected full episodes of the 30-minute show will also be available for free online at pbskids.org/video, on the PBS Kids Video App and on the PBS Kids Roku channel. The new half-hour Sesame Street program will offer families even more access to the iconic series that for decades has helped prepare kids for success in school and in life. The half-hour version of Sesame Street will help kids learn a variety of skills, including the school readiness skills—such as impulse control and socio-emotional lessons – for which parents are increasingly seeking resources. With its comprehensive curriculum—or as Sesame Workshop calls it, a whole-child approach—Sesame Street makes a measurable difference in children’s lives. Each episode is a shortened version of each one-hour program and will include a “Street Story,” a “Word on the Street” segment, a celebrity vocabulary segment, songs, spoofs, dance breaks and popular segments like “Cookie’s Crumby Pictures” or “Super Grover 2.0.”
