The Enjoyment of Poetry

by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel

Can you recall the first time your high school English teacher announced the next unit of study would be poetry? We can almost hear the simulta‐neous groan and sighs of the students with this an‐nouncement. Admittedly, I felt the same, until our engaging and enthusiastic teacher shared poems with us that were thoughtful and caught our atten‐tion with their messages. With this thought, it re‐minds me of several excellent quotes about poetry that have remained with me long after school days were over. For instance, Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote “Poetry: the best words in the best order.” Or Dylan Thomas saying, “The world is never the same once a good poem has been added to it.”

What exactly are the qualities of a good poem and one that remains memorable, often over a cen‐tury? First of all the poem must tell a story and its words describe a visual picture for the reader to imagine. The poem should have a main idea as its focus and can tell the story with just the right words without excess that detracts from the point of its message or tale. After reading the poem some kind of emotion should be evoked whether happiness, sad‐ness, curiosity or humor as well as others a reader may feel. When our class was first introduced to po‐etry, our teacher made it fun by starting with Ogden Nash, known for his light verse and whimsical humor. Born in Rye, New York and Harvard educated, his poems entertained both adults and children when he often misspelled words just so they would rhyme. As entertaining as Dr. Seuss, among his most noted poems were Eels, The Fly, The Guppy and The Jellyfish

As high school English classes progressed and we moved to senior year, along the way the poetry se‐lections became more intense. When in grade school my first surprise being introduced to poetry was that they all did not have to rhyme! There are so many forms of poetry like sonnets, ballads, haiku, and verse, another learning aspect of the subject of poems. When “heavier” topics and subjects of the poems were introduced, they often required trans‐lation of each stanza by our teacher, but others were easily understood. There are two such poems that still remain in my thoughts today and the first is To an Athlete Dying Young by A.E. Housman and the

with Larry Spiro

I wrote this poem several times over the last few years. It is a meditation on the topic of murder of the innocent. Recently the count is so deep that I can no longer list the victims or the incidents. Since the Monteray Park massacre there was another in Half Moon Bay, both in California.

Gun Violence Archive tracks the spread of what has been called an “American Disease” and which de‐fines a mass shooting as a single incident in which at least four people‐other than the shooter ‐are shot other is Richard Cory by Edwin Arlington Robinson. The poem about the athlete relates how a young man passed away too early when he was in his prime and the reader is led to reflect on another aspect of this event with the words “Smart lad, to slip betimes away from fields where glory does not stay, And early though the laurel grows It withers quicker than the rose”. In the second poem, Richard Cory is a man of immense wealth, extremely handsome, tall and slim and makes the young ladies pulses flutter when he passes by in the street. In essence, he had all that one desired in life that all the townspeople envied when they thought of what he possessed. The ending of the poem startles the reader, but not in the way one ex‐pects. Space here does not provide enough room to include these two poems in their entirety. But they are well worth looking up on the internet or your old school English books you may have kept.

Best Poems: While you are looking for poems to revisit from your school years, here are a few more you may want to read or introduce to your high school aged children. The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, In Flanders Fields by John McCrae and O Captain! My Captain! by Walt Whitman.

(NBC News 1.24.2023). This year, in 24 days, over 39 mass shootings have unfolded.

In the twilight’s last gleam death is revealed

by Lawrence Spiro

In the twilight’s last gleam death is revealed. Shrouded in darkness the why is concealed. There are no words written that can explain or comfort those who mourn with grief, with pain. Life is the result of cause and effect and the actions of those free to select. No manner of belief can touch this truth Far beyond a guess a reason or proof The purpose of darkness within t wilight, is known by One alone as day dims night.

Poetry For Meri

by Don Intonato

Sandal

If you find my sandal left on the shore, don’t look for me on the distant waves, no wafting helicopters over the grey ocean, no red twirling lights, police cars at Ditch.

The truth is, I couldn’t remember your names anymore and the nurse was getting on my nerves.

Big moon night, one last dive into the breakers off the rock jetty.

If I’m lucky the sharks don’t make a meal of me.

And I am drifting in the gulf stream, carried in shoals of green and golden fish up to Iceland.

Some quiet afternoon after the summer ends, if you want to find me, look upstairs in the top right drawer of my desk.

Find the notebooks with a thousand poems. I am there waiting for you.

On Thursday February 16, 2023 I was at East Hampton High School for the NY Public High School Athletic Association Section 11 Class A boys basketball quarterfinal playoff game between Amityville High School and East Hampton HS. Amityville had travelled 71 miles out East for the game. They were on the court 45 minutes before tipoff warming up when I arrived.

East Hampton came out fast at the 5:06pm tipoff. Junior Liam Fowkes and Senior Luke Reese both had 8 points in the opening quarter. East Hampton led 18‐14 after the first 8 mi‐nutes. Amityville won the 2nd quarter 12‐6 led by Seville Wil‐liams’ 6 points and Christian Smi‐ley’s 5. Amityville took a 26‐24 lead into halftime. Both teams scored 11 points in the 3rd quarter. It was 37‐35 to start the 4th. Jack Dickinson hit a 3 pointer to get East Hampton even at 40. After East Hampton tied the game at 40, Seville Williams and Tyler Hunter took over for Amityville. Williams had 9 points in the final quarter and Hunter hit two big threes to lead Amityville to a 57‐51 win. Williams led all scorers in the game with 19 points. Amityville’s 20 point 4th quarter sealed East Hampton’s fate. It was an exciting game played in front of a packed gym.

The next day I drove 114 miles to Mt. Vernon High School to watch defending NY Public HS Class AA Champions Mt. Vernon HS play Carmel HS in the open‐ing round of the Section 1 AA Championship. Carmel travelled 46 miles South from Putnam County to take on the defending champions at Mt. Vernon High

School’s Ben Gordon Alumni Gymnasium. Carmel’s starting lineup had one senior, two juniors and two sophomores. They scored their first field goal with 70 seconds left in the 1st quarter and trailed 17‐7 after the first 8 minutes. Carmel scored 12 points in the sec‐ond quarter. After a short run in the second quarter Carmel was down 5 points. At halftime Mt. Vernon led 30‐19. The Knights woke up at halftime and scored 28 third quarter points. They led 58‐30 after three quarters. The defending State champions won their opening round playoff game 78‐45 scoring 20 points in the final quarter. A balanced Knights’ attack had four players scoring double figures. Seniors Elijah Morris and Jaden Fearon had 12 points. Senior Dylan Colon had 11 points and Sophomore guard Tavien Tyler had 10 points. The veteran defending AA Cham‐pions start four seniors Colon, Fearon, Morris and Chris Fitzgerald with Tyler the only underclass man in the starting lineup. They’re a deep veteran squad regularly playing eight seniors. In the one and done Section 1 playoffs, senior depth is an advantage.

As we go to press, Mt. Vernon prepares to host their second playoff game on February 24th against Suffern HS from Rockland County. The Mounties will travel 30 miles across the Hudson River to test them‐selves against the defending champions. Next stop for the winner is Westchester County Center in White Plains for a March 2, 2023 semifinal as the quest for a Section 1 Gold Ball continues.

BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS...

Continued from Page 26 and friends. The 10th Anniversary Volume of Uplift was published in 2022. All of the money she’s made on the book has helped fund a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.

As a survivor, Barbara saw the need for a book that treated breast cancer as a do‐able experience. The response to it has been remarkable. After the August 2001 publication, she says, “The book was immediately cited by women with breast cancer, and the doctors and nurses who treat them, as the single most important volume to keep on their nightstands.”

The second edition, published in May 2003 contains new material in the form of a chapter on recurrence. The third edition, a 5th Anniversary Volume, adds stories from survivors of five or more years, and the fourth edition is the 10th Anniversary Volume, which includes thoughts from survivors of ten or more years, and a discussion about genetic testing.

On her website, Barbara Delinsky states, “I have written many books, but the one – the one – of which I am most proud is UPLIFT. This book helps women at a terrifying time. It boosts their spirits, convinces them that they will get through treatment tub. Continue on into the main living area including an open kitchen, great room with wood-burning fireplace, half bath, pantry, and access to the 2nd story wrap around hardwood deck overlooking a brand new gunite swimming pool.
