If thereΓ’€™s one phrase that I could use without getting teary, itΓ’€™s that MKA provides a transformative experience for our students.

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD Dear MKA Families and Friends, Your generous and loyal support of MKA is making a world of difference in every aspect of school life: teaching and learning, facilities, faculty support and the quality of the students MKA is able to attract and retain. As you read this Annual Report, you will hear about particular areas of school life: Reggio Emilia at the Primary School, the scope of athletic programs at the Middle School and the arts at the Upper School. These programs are just some of those that make MKA such a rich and textured community, and they are possible, in large part, due to the generosity of our donors. The power of philanthropy in our community was well illustrated in October 2014 when we dedicated the new field house, the renovated athletic field and the Everett L. Glenn ’11 Spectators Terrace at Muenster Field. Students, alumni, faculty, Trustees and parents gathered on a beautiful Saturday morning to celebrate the transformative effect of your generosity on MKA’s athletic facilities and program. In terms of annual giving, the 2014-15 school year was particularly strong, as we raised an essential $1,354,607 from over 1,500 donors, including alumni from the classes of 1933 through 2014, as well as students, employees, Trustees and past and current parents. We are delighted to recognize the Class of 1933 for 100% participation in Annual Giving. Participation in recent years has been a key factor in helping to create a vibrant culture of philanthropy at MKA– and for that, we thank everyone who made a gift of any kind last year. Future Forward, MKA’s campaign to benefit endowment, facilities and annual giving, is now nearing its final phase. Last year, new gifts and pledges to capital projects and endowment totaled over $1,400,000, bolstering endowment and helping

us to move forward with and complete the major construction projects at the Upper School Academic Center and Muenster Field. Looking ahead, in addition to our aspiration to continue to grow support for annual giving at MKA, we are in the process of securing capital gifts to fund renovation and new construction at Brookside, our primary school. We hope to engage the interest of all of our constituents in this effort to enhance a division of our school that many consider to be one of the brightest stars in the MKA constellation. Thank you all for what you have done. We hope you will continue to make MKA a philanthropic priority for the benefit of our students, now and for generations to come. Warmest regards,

Thomas W. Nammack Headmaster

EFFECT OF ANNUAL GIVING DOLLARS MKA is a school of thought that turns inquiry into insight. We intentionally foster balance in studentsΓ’€™ lives so that they can develop their infinite potential, both in and out of the classroom. Embracing a contagious go-forit attitude, students confidently try anything on their distinct educational adventures, guided by faculty who love to learn and live to teach. As diverse as it is united, our community is strengthened by a commitment to good character, and together we celebrate each studentΓ’€™s success, individually defined. Annual Giving supports this mantra by supplementing tuition funds to give our students, faculty and staff the opportunities to carry out their own journeys. Athletics, academics and the arts are three key areas of MKA life that benefit and flourish because of your contributions to the Annual Fund.

It’s given both of my kids, who are very, very differentβ€”different learners, different personalities, different needs, different strengthsβ€”the space to really explore, to breathe and to grow here.

PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Reggio Emilia

approach is a child–centered, multi-discipline approach to learning that capitalizes on the interests of the children, an approach to teaching and learning that has worldwide recognition as an engaging and effective curriculum.

Teachers help to uncover each child’s needs and gifts to draw the best out of all. They offer boundless, unexpected opportunities and support students in creating their own educational journeys. Each year some of our Primary School teachers attend a workshop in Italy along with over 4,000 participants from 110 different countries to educate them on the approach. Without the support of Annual Fund dollars and the school’s intense commitment to professional development, our faculty would not be able to integrate the latest educational research and technology into their classroom while serving as models of collaboration and lifelong learning. Since its inception at MKA in 2013, seven Pre-K and Kindergarten teachers have attended the week-long study group. Primary School teacher Caylie Marden who recently attended the workshop commented, β€œI have seen firsthand that Reggio is the best approach to teaching in that the children get so excited by the ownership they have over their learning that they are motivated to continue with it for hours and over days and have even been known to ask if they could miss recess to

| 10

continue their academic pursuits. Each child brings new insights and new strengths to a project, so that the finished project is a sum of all their thoughts and ideas and a visual representation of their thinking. For me as a teacher, I have gained a lot more insight into each individual child’s thinking process β€” not only what they know β€” but how they arrived at their ideas. I have also seen the student’s attention span increase dramatically, and the observations which are a part of our art studies have helped the children become more observant in reading, writing, math and science. Also, the social aspect of Reggio learning cannot be emphasized enough. Most of our work is collaborative where the children work in pairs or in small groups. I have noticed that children develop the skills and confidence to voice and explain their ideas, to blend their ideas together, and negotiate and problem solve. As they learn together, they gain a different kind of respect for one another and it really bonds a class. I have seen students develop incredible confidence in themselves and their abilities, become skilled problem solvers and have a perseverance to take their ideas to completion. (All skills essential to the 21st century workplace.)”

MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS

On the first day of basketball practice, Varsity Coach Jessica Bishop ’04 had come to not expect much from her freshmen. Some may have played before, but Bishop knew to count on her returning players for her new starting five. Now, Bishop starts her season with knowledge about her new freshmen’s skills and confidence that they will fit right in thanks to their time playing Middle School basketball. Bishop sees the benefits of Middle School athletic programs from both sides of the coin. As a Middle School volleyball coach, her girls get the same focus, attention and training as the Upper School Team under Coach Mike Tully. β€œThe MKA Middle School sports program helps our students to meet new friends, develop school spirit and a love for competition, and it is instrumental in providing a strong foundation for our Upper School teams. As Head Middle School Girls Volleyball Coach, I am in constant communication with our Varsity Volleyball Coach Mike

Tully, to ensure that we are instilling the values, knowledge and work ethic necessary for our athletes to succeed once they go on to high school. MKA will have one of the best volleyball teams in Essex County this year, and I believe that is a testament to the hard work that so many of our players put in during their Middle School years.” β€œI can see five or six of my Middle School girls making the Varsity squad next year,” Bishop comments, β€œ and perhaps some are even starting material.” Middle School sports teams are made possible by the Annual Fund. They give children the opportunity to explore their interests, bond with other children and learn the value of hard work in a different capacity than in the classroom.

UPPER SCHOOL ARTS

Years of research show that Art education is closely linked to almost everything that we, as a nation, say we want for our children and demand from our schools: academic achievement, social and emotional development, and civic engagement. A 2005 report by the Rand Corporation about the visual arts argues β€œthe intrinsic pleasures and stimulation of the art experience do more than sweeten an individual’s life.” And that’s exactly what the Fine and Performing Arts Department at the Upper School does – it sweetens the lives of all the students that it teaches. Not only do the students receive a first-rate education, but because of the support of the Annual Fund, they receive additional resources to continue that education in whatever way they are inspired.

| 14

Fine & Performing Arts Department Chair Nicole Hoppe is extremely thankful for the support of the Annual Fund and the role it plays in offering top-notch equipment and instruction. β€œBecause of the generosity of the MKA community, we have access to things like a piano for recreational use in Weiss Auditorium, instruments for students to use as loaners if they cannot afford to buy their own, set pieces for the musical such as the car for Grease or the big can for Hairspray, an Arts Light table and many more important items that enrich the creative lives of our students.”

Planned Giving The Heritage Society The Heritage Society recognizes those individuals who have provided for Montclair Kimberley Academy in their estate plans or through other planned gifts. These gifts are a critical element in helping to build MKA’s endowment – ensuring our vitality for generations to come. The Pooled Income Fund Montclair Kimberley Academy’s Pooled Income Fund was established by the Board of Trustees to appeal to a wide variety of donors whose twin goals are to make a gift, while retaining a life income for themselves and/or for a spouse. Upon their death(s), the assets become the property of MKA. During the 2014-2015 school year, the following donors participated in MKA’s Pooled Income Fund. Mrs. Aubin Ames ’54 Mrs. John L. Kidde Mr. Philip Smith ’53

ANNUAL REPORT 2014–2015 | 23

Everybody is an MKA kid in their own way. We’re not all the same; we all bring different things to the table. Some of us play sports, some of us do the arts and some of us are always in the classroom. That’s MKA. I think we’re all MKA.

ANNUAL GIVING Montclair Kimberley Academy gratefully acknowledges all those individuals who provided financial support, time and talent during the 2014-2015 fiscal year. Please accept our thanks. Particular thanks go to the members of the Founders Society who have provided leadership in annual giving support to the school during the 20142015 school year.

We are so grateful for your generous support throughout the 2014-2015 year Annual Giving appeals. This was our best year for Annual Giving in the past ten years! Matching gifts for any new or increased personal donations made an incredible difference in helping us go above and beyond our goals this year. We owe our achievement to the team effort of our parent and alumni volunteers who constantly work to encourage everyone to view MKA as a priority worthy of their support. Thanks to you, MKA is able to provide a remarkable education for our students, attract and retain extraordinary professional faculty and maintain a flourishing alumni program. ANNUAL REPORT 2014–2015 | 39

When I visited everyone was very welcoming. It was definitely the sense of community that really shook me. It was prevalent the first time that I came here and itΓ’€™s been really great since.

ANNUAL REPORT 2014–2015 | 53

When we walk into MKA, you see the kids are amazing. The art is amazing. The vibe is amazing. The teachers are friendly and smiling. You could tell that there was a real community, that the parents knew each other, that everybody knew the kids and all the kids knew all the teachers. That doesnΓ’€™t happen everywhere.
