CHESS Monday | 2:30-3:30 p.m. | Grades 1 – 3 | Limit 15/class Join Chess Wizards this spring for challenging chess lessons, exciting tournaments, fun team activities, and more! If you’re brand new to the game, we’ll teach you the basics and get you playing games in no time. If you’re a seasoned checkmate artist, we’ll show you new ways to let your creativity loose on and off the chess board.

JAZZ AND HIP-HOP DANCE CLASS Monday | 2:30-3:30 p.m. | Grades 1 – 3 | Limit 12/class Join us for an energetic dance class combining stretch, jazz and hip-hop! Students in this class will learn proper dance techniques while receiving an incredible work-out. Please come prepared in socks, sneakers and comfortable clothing. (Students will have time to change before class starts.)

TOTALLY CERAMICS Tuesday | 2:30-3:30 p.m. | Grades K – 3 | Limit 16/class This class is a hands-on experience for children interested in exploring their creative abilities through clay. Clay is a wonderful tactile medium to which children are naturally drawn. Its three-dimensional nature forces them to think about structure, shapes and forms. Students will be introduced to the basics of working with clay. They will experiment with a variety of building techniques while learning to think through their ideas and problem solve as they strengthen their understanding and skills. Once children learn to express and execute their personal visions in clay, they are empowered in ways that serve them far beyond the walls of the art studio.

YOGA In this fun-filled class, students will go on a yoga adventure to wild, wonderful places, where they will meet some animal and nature friends along the way! Students will learn basic breathing, yoga poses, and relaxation techniques that promote strength, balance, body awareness, and coordination, improve focus and stimulate creativity, while exploring art, music, poetry and storytelling. Instructor: Be Yoga, Be Love

Grades 3–8

INTRO TO ART MATERIALS AND PROCESSES FOR PRE-K AND KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS Wednesday | 2:30-3:30 p.m. Grades Pre-K – K | Limit 12/class

The goal of this early art experience is to provide a supportive and motivating environment working with a range of materials and processes. By pushing back the boundaries of what is known or thought possible, students are encouraged to recognize or to explore unlikely connections and juxtapositions, the underpinning of creativity. Student interest, effort and authentic ownership of the task or problem is encouraged. Challenges and developing strategies to encourage self-sufficient learning, choice and opportunities for independent as well as collaborative work is all part of the process. Teacher response focuses on constructive discussion in support of children’s feelings of self-worth and commitment to deeper learning. Encouraging determination and persistence is key as students build confidence and the selfbelief to take intellectual and intuitive risks.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM Private, individual lessons will be offered to MKA students on the violin, viola, cello, percussion, flute, piano and oboe. Lessons will be given at the Middle School. The days and times of these lessons will be scheduled between the instructors and the parents. If you are interested in finding out more information and pricing or would like to arrange for private lessons, please contact Dimitri Hadjipetkov at (973) 842-2853.

DENIM DREAMS

INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH CLUB

Wednesday 2:30-3:30 p.m. Grades 1 – 3 Limit 15/class

Wednesday | 3:15-3:45 p.m. Grades 1-3 | Limit 10/class Introduction to French is the perfect club for those students who enjoy learning Spanish in school and have an interest in languages in general. Its purpose is to give students the opportunity to dive into a new language that they wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to explore until Middle School. Through engaging activities, songs, and games, students will be able to have fun while simultaneously learning. Students will be exposed to the fundamentals of the French language, including simple greetings and vocabulary spanning a wide variety of topics, therefore creating an environment where students can satisfy their curiosity in a relaxed manner as grammatical structures won’t be taught. Not only will this enriching experience widen the horizons of the students, but it will also put the fun in French! Students who are already taking French are still very welcome to join this club because although there may be some overlap in the topics covered, it will allow those students to reinforce and solidify what they have learned throughout the course of their Brookside years. Please note: Students will be sent to Extended Day at no charge before our French club begins at 3:15pm. This club runs for a half-hour at no charge.

Take your love of denim to the next level! Students will create really cool clothes and accessories, like skirts, vests, and even a trendy mini backpack! From designing and sketching, to altering and decorating, students will be guided through the process step-by-step to create some incredible one-of-a-kind pieces! Friends and family will be invited in at the end of the session to see students model their designs in a runway show. Instructor: Hobby Quest

THE ULTIMATE ART EXPERIENCE WITH MS. DURANT Thursday | 2:30-3:30 p.m. Grades Pre-K – 3 | Limit 16/class Friday | 2:30-3:30 p.m. Grades Pre-K – 3 | Limit 16/class The Extended Day art classes are offered with the goal of putting students at the center of their learning as they investigate new ideas and engage in making art that has personal meaning. These student-centered classes offer an oasis of freedom to think and work creatively as students direct their artistic pursuits. Students are encouraged to develop their ideas, choose their projects and work on their problem-solving strategies. Projects can be interpreted and executed with the full benefit of a wide array of resources including media, materials, tools, literature and visuals. In the spirit of discovery and experimentation and the guiding presence of Ms. DuRant, students work independently and/or collaboratively with peers.
