Welcome to a new year. It is indeed a time for a fresh start and a clean slate to begin anew and move onward and upward. We do hope you all had the holidays that you wished for and it is our further hope for only the best in our new year of 2017. We begin by telling you that for the cruise industry this is a special time of year. It is called WAVE season. The month of February is particularly interesting in that the most popular summer destinations are usually having a number of great promotions. And for us on the west coast that is especially true for Alaska. We have one ship that is dedicated to the San Francisco market and it is called the GRAND PRINCESS®. The GRAND will be doing a series of 10 day cruises roundtrip from San Francisco beginning this May and there are a couple of itineraries she will do.

Administration has issued a warning about the use of numbing gels, as they contain benzocaine. The FDA recommends that parents of children younger than 2 years not use medications that contain benzocaine, as there are reports of a rare but serious and sometimes fatal condition called methemoglobinemia; a disorder in which the amount of oxygen carried through the bloodstream is greatly reduced. The FDA also warns parents not to use medication which has lidocaine to treat teething pain because an overdose can cause seizures, severe brain injury and problems in the heart.

What Happens When Your Baby Is Teething? Babies usually begin teething between 4 to 7 months of age. This process can last up to three years allowing time for a set of twenty teeth to push through the gums. Some of the signs that your baby is getting new teeth are, trouble falling asleep and can become fussy. He or she may not want to eat and might start to drool more than usual. Here are som ways to make your baby more comfortable. Behaviors like fussiness, sleeplessness and refusing to eat can result from sore and tender gums. Try soothing the gums by rubbing them gently with a clean finger, a moist gauze or a small cool spoon. Letting your child chew on a clean teething ring also may relieve some of the discomfort the baby is feeling. There are plenty of numbing gels available over the counter without a prescription. As soon as the baby gets the first tooth schedule a well-baby visit to the dentist and this allows the dentist to check for signs of tooth decay and talk about habits and conditions that can affect your child’s teeth. 5 Secrets To Building The Best Media Room There was a time when only a few could afford a large screen television. The resolution was clunky, the sound poor and the cost high. But over the past decade, technology has advanced so remarkably fast that today a 60-inch television with unbelievably crisp resolution is within many people’s budget. Add to this the fact that tickets for movie theaters are more expensive than ever, and it makes sense why more people are building a home theater in their house. With some planning and amazing electronic toys, it’s possible to create a media room that delivers theater-quality sound and visuals. And you can enjoy it in more comfortable seats and without obnoxious strangers interrupting the show. But 4K televisions, surround-sound speakers and bass cannons are only part of the overall experience. To compliment these electronics features, you need the right setting to amplify the experience. This means taking the time to

design a proper media room that enables your equipment. These five indispensable tips will help you do just that. 1. A great media room begins with the right walls. Incredibly strong, Habito(TM) drywall is able to hold up to 30 pounds on a single screw. This drywall does away with wall mounts and the need to find a stud, allowing you to mount your speakers, television or screen exactly where you want them to go. 2. Paint wisely. While what color you choose for your room will be based off personal preference, aim for earthy, neutral colors that minimize glare. To help draw the focus of the room toward the screen, many paint the wall a burgundy or maroon. 3. Great sound is a result of more than speakers. Designing your room with acoustics in mind is key. Hard surfaces create a sharp, echoing quality to the sound. To avoid this, your media room should be carpeted and instead of hard blinds, use sound dampening curtains to help enhance the sound and keep out the sun. The density of Habito drywall also contributes to reduced sound transmission between rooms, helping to create separation between your media room and the living area of the home. 4. Think about speakers, walls and storage. Though most people’s attention

will be drawn to the wall with the television on it, the surrounding walls are equally important. Create lighting to accommodate a variety of moods. A media room is meant to be used in a number of ways. This way, you can keep it dark for the dramatic scenes, and when the pizza arrives, have just enough light to see your food but not detract from the picture quality. It’s easy to only focus on the big “toys” when building a media room. But the secret to a truly great home-theater experience begins in the construction phase, well before anything is plugged in. Non Probate Transfers Considerations for Estate Planning It is estimated that more than 50% of all adults in the United States do not have a Will. At first glance that statistic can be very disturbing especially when you understand that most of those people have children. So how is it possible that so many people pass away without a Will yet everything seems to be distributed without the need of a Will or Probate? First, they have designated beneficiaries on their accounts. The distribution of assets such as life insurance, annuities, retirement accounts and bank accounts are governed by contract law. Therefore, the accounts can have one or more designated beneficiaries to whom the asset will be paid upon the death of the owner. In addition, most of these accounts allow alternate beneficiaries in the event the primary beneficiary has died. However, if you are married, the Retirement Equity Act may supersede a

beneficiary designation if the spouse has not consented to the designation. Second, form of ownership of the asset does not require a probate. If you are married and own real property in California as community property with the right of survivorship, the property will transfer to the surviving spouse with the benefit of a full step up in basis without any requirement for a probate. A probate is also not necessary if title to real property is held as joint tenants, tenants in common or the interest is held by an entity such as a corporation. However, great CAUTION should be used in holding real property as Joint Tenants. While joint tenancy with the right of survivorship can be very attractive for parents trying to avoid the necessity of a Will or Trust, the effect of transferring property into Joint Tenancy with children will cause a reassessment of the property for tax purposes and will also eliminate the opportunity for the children to receive the step up in basis to full fair market value of the property on the death of the parent. Joint Tenancy can also open the property up to claims of creditors of the other owner(s). In California, absent an agreement by the parties, when one of the joint tenants dies, the surviving owner will only get a step up in basis for ½ the value of the property. Third, there is joint ownership on accounts. Pursuant to California’s Multiple Party

Account Law, bank and brokerage accounts can have multiple owners. After the death of one of the owners, the remaining owners will continue the ownership. If the account has more than one surviving owner, the surviving owners will maintain their ownership proportions plus an equal share of the decedent portion. However, great CAUTION should be used in putting other people on bank and brokerage accounts because when title to a multiple party account can ONLY be changed by closing the account or the agreement of all parties. If you do not have a Will or Trust, it is possible to handle your Estate Planning without one. However, it is usually NOT advisable. The ownership of your assets by or with other people may mean the assets will not available for your use when you need them most. HEART TO HEART CELEBRATION GALA FOR SENIOR WISHES An Elderly Wish Foundation has announced the date of March 18, 2017 for its major fundraiser, the 15th Annual Heart to Heart “Grazie!” The majority of funds generated from this gala event will help “to enrich the days of the chronically ill seniors in Contra Costa County, by making a life-long wish come true.” This elegant event will be held at Antioch’s Lone Tree Golf and Event Center, 4800 Golf Course Road. This semi-formal evening is held from 5:30pm to 11:00pm, tickets are $65 per person, with black & white cocktail attire. Guests will enjoy cocktails starting at 5:30pm, followed by a gourmet dinner, and live and silent auctions. If you attend, you will have the chance to bid on a number of wonderful gift donations from individuals and businesses supporting the foundation’s mission.
