Vitamin D and Gum Disease Vitamin D has long been known as essential for bone health and it also affects other organ systems like the immune and cardiovascular systems, muscles and the brain. It has been reported that approximately 1 billion people worldwide are either vitamin D deficient or insufficient. Sources of vitamin D come from sun exposure and food. Different factors such as skin color (amount of melanin), age, fat content and living in areas where the exposure to sun is minimal affect how much vitamin D the body makes and requires. Mild deficiency of vitamin D causes symptoms such as loss of appetite, diarrhea, insomnia, and muscle weakness. Rickets is another well-known disease due to vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency is also associated with other diseases such as periodontitis, fractures from falls, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Diagnosing vitamin D deficiency is accomplished by measuring the serum levels. Treatment of Vitamin D comes from exposure to sunlight, artificial ultraviolet B or taking supplements and each have their own drawbacks. With both sunlight and artificial UVB, patients should know that exposure will age the skin and increase the risk of nonmelanoma skin cancers. Treatment with oral supplements is difficult because high doses are required to get adequate serum levels and this, again, depends on the amount of sunlight exposure, body fat, age and skin color. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects approximately 35% of US adults over the age of thirty. Several studies have been undertaken and have found lower levels of Vitamin D is associated with bone loss around teeth and receding gums and inflammation of the gums. Recently, a study found that periodontal disease is more common in women with osteoporosis and is associated with lower vitamin D levels in the body. Periodontal disease is a multifactorial disease initiated by bacterial infection leading to bone loss around the teeth. Vitamin D plays an important role in

calcium and bone homeostasis, as well as immune function. Vitamin D deficiency and calcium deficiencies leads to bone loss and increased inflammation, making patients more susceptible to periodontal disease. Vitamin D, although classically thought of as a bone hormone, plays a role in other parts of the body too. It is a predictor for bone health and also a potential independent predictor of the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. So, if you have gum disease or not, it is important to get your teeth checked by the dentist to determine the risk factors and to get treated or, even better, prevent you from getting periodontitis. What To Do When Doors Rub When a door starts rubbing lightly against the frame it means that the two have moved out of alignment with each other. This is a minor problem that usually can be repaired without chiseling, planing, sawing or painting. All that’s needed is a small hammer and a nail punch to remove and replace the hinge pins and a six-inch crescent wrench to bend the hinge. We call this re-forming. Best of all, you can leave the door in place in the opening while you make the adjustment. Remember: the fix we recommend here is for minor adjustments of up to about an eighth of an inch. A house that has settled to the point where the door will close only halfway is a different story and another column.

First, let’s consider a door that’s rubbing at the top on the knob side. Simple geometry allows us three alternatives to make the repair. All you need to do is to use one of the following techniques to increase the distance between the door and frame at the top: 1) move the bottom of the door closer to the frame at the hinge side. 2) move the top of the door away from the frame at the hinge side. 3) a combination of 1 and 2. The method you select will depend on the amount of space that you have to work with between the door and the frame at both the hinge and knob sides. Once a method has been selected, the next step will be to close the door and pop the hinge pin from the hinge you have decided to adjust. To move the door closer to the frame, knuckles on the hinge on the frame will have to be bent toward the frame. Either that or the hinge on the door must be bent away from the frame. Doing the reverse to either hinge will move the door away from the frame. Here’s how: Clamp the crescent wrench tightly onto one knuckle of the hinge

and apply pressure in the direction you want it to bend. Each knuckle will have to be re-formed separately. Modern hinges are lightweight and relatively easy to bend, so a lot of pressure shouldn’t be necessary. Older hinges are typically more rigid and may have to be removed, placed in a vice and then re-formed. When closing the gap between the door and the frame, be careful not to over-bend the hinge. Doing so may bring the door too close to the frame and make the door difficult to close. The same technique can be used when the knob side of the door is rubbing the frame. When adjusting for this problem, remember to bend the hinge(s) so that you don’t cause the door to rub at the top. And, that’s all there is to it. How to Prepare your Home for a Sale

This is important: if you wish to take window coverings, a chandelier, built in appliances or fixtures, remove and replace them now. If Buyers don’t see them, they won’t insist on having them. With that done, it’s time to unclutter the home with any personal items. This means removing all photos, books, refrigerator magnet collections, as well as clearing off all counter tops and flat surfaces so that the next homeowner can visualize their family living there.

It has arrived. You’ve come to the point where moving from your home needs to happen, and it’s time to begin the process. The first step, and I believe the most helpful, is to say goodbye to every room of your home and envision turning your keys over to the next homeowner. Recognize that your home is now a product that must be sold from off the shelf. Once you’ve made this step, you gain the momentum you need to do everything that has to follow. Start at the curb. Your home’s first impression is very important. Trim your bushes and edges, water and mow the lawn, clear the sidewalks and plant new flowers (yellow is good). Group your potted plants if you have them. Have concrete or walk stains removed and pressure-washed. If there are cracks it’s best to have them fixed. All the windows should be washed inside and out.

Clean is better, so hiring a professional service to come in and thoroughly clean can be very helpful. Buyers will be nosy, they will open closets, cupboards, and drawers, so organization will help. As for your stuff, it’s best to move belongings to a storage unit. I suggest this because I want to encourage you to remove excess furniture as well. If you don’t use storage, move items to the garage to add more open living space inside. Visual damage to carpets, walls, doors, flooring, or other obvious places should be repaired. Always replace all bad light bulbs, fix leaky faucets, add new rugs where needed, and wax your floors to make them more appealing. If you have

new towels, now is the time to put them out. If you have pink or purple rooms in your home, consider painting them to a neutral color.
